#370 What happened to our blog, cont’d

Remember we told you about the blog troubles that plagued us for ten days? And there was some web infiltration too? We seem to have patched the holes and be cruising at full speed.

So what happened?

Here is a good article about what happened to our site.

It was a widespread hack of websites first discovered in May of this year and named Gumblar. There has been a recent resurgence.

Gumblar steals ftp info and uses that to inject malicious code into sites. (We’re not entirely sure why — either just to be generally disruptive or to scam google adwords.)

The code isn’t the same every time, so it’s hard to detect. In May, people were saying it had infected 60,000-200,000 sites. The latest strain is harder to detect, but that could mean it’s more widespread.

Tricky, disruptive and not very fun for us at Harry, Inc!

I also got an email from Lois about a Guardian Newspaper web page with a video clip of photographer Terry O’Neill’s tales of capturing his famous photo of Bridgette Bardot. Worth a look… Thanks Lois!

#367 Busy week

It will be a busy week:

• Wednesday we are running the Photography for Communications Professionals. It sold out a while ago and have already posted dates for March.

• I will be editing a portrait session for a couple shot last weekend. It’s their first official portrait session in 40 years.

• Friday morning is a Custom Course for two women based on Natural Light Portraits. There will be portraits of youngsters!

Portrait Photo Workshop Ottawa

• This weekend we will be hosting the Creative Business Seminar on Saturday and Sunday. So far we have a good turnout.

• Next week “On Assignment with Andrew Balfour” starts on Thursday. Andrew will be leading photographers through a studio based lighting assignment. Spots are still available.

#364 Student Produces New Photo Book

Wow!

It makes me smile.

I just got an email from a past student who has published a book highlighting stories and photos from Arviat, third largest town in Nunavut.

Three and a half years ago Nadine took a Natural Light Portrait Photo Workshop at HarryNowell.com while visiting Ottawa from her northern home. She has sent me periodic updates about her adventures.

This week she sent me the following announcement to promote her new book!

Yesterday I blogged about the studio lighting course we ran for two of our Pro Program students and showed some behind the scenes shots of Nat and Scott (photographers) in action.

Marc Champagne was our hard working model – although he looked like he was having a lot of fun!

#362 Behind the scenes studio shoot

On Sunday we worked with two Pro Program students on a Custom Course designed to introduce them to the world of studio lighting.

Studio Lighting Photo Course

We worked in the studio to get them acquainted with strobes (big flashes), hot lights so they would be technically savvy when the models arrived.

In the afternoon we brought in two models – the first was a triathlete who wanted some studio cycling photos. The second was an actor looking for some headshots.

Today I have posted some behind the scenes (available light) photos of the students in action. In the days ahead I will post some of the student’s results. Check back later this week to see the results!
