When the economy took a downward spiral this past year, many middle class Americans found themselves somewhere they never thought they would be: a food pantry.

“This is the middle class who have lost their jobs, who are out of work or on temporary layoffs who never thought in their life would have to utilize food pantries,” said Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo (D- Mercer/Middlesex). “It’s really starting to hit home.”

But the same economic stresses that are creating an increasing demand on food pantries are also hurting donations to the organizations.<br

NEW PROVIDENCE - Robbie Bloom lives in a quiet neighborhood about two blocks away from Oakwood Park in New Providence. But life could change if a deal between Union County and the Borough goes through to turn the park into a county-run sports facility - a magnet for out-of-towners.

“If it becomes a big park, you’ve got big park problems and I don’t want that,” said Bloom, 40, a mother of two who lives on Commonwealth Avenue, a local street that leads into the quiet park.
