<p>Chinese painting LOS ANGELES - No one who was there or watched it on TV will ever forget the rioting in Los Angeles that began 20 years ago this Sunday. The mostly-black community of South L.A. erupted after a jury acquitted four white police officers in the videotaped beating of Rodney King, a black motorist stopped for speeding.
Six days of violence killed 55 people, injured thousands, and shocked the nation. CBS News correspondent John Blackstone covered the riots in 1992 and returned to the neighborhood this week.
When Los Angeles was seized by chaos and violence 20 years ago, the city's deep divisions were brutally exposed.
A TV helicopter watched overhead as white truck driver Reginald Denny was pulled from his cab and beaten. A radio reporter was standing nearby.
"He is bleeding, he is trying to get back into his truck," said Bob Brill of UPI Radio at the time.
Charlie Beck, then a police sergeant, had just arrived home from work. "It was almost seven o'clock at night. Reginald Denny was being dragged out of his truck," he said.
"You saw that on television?" asked Blackstone.
"I saw it on television. No police cars were responding," said Beck.
Chinese brush painting Denny managed to pull himself into his truck and drive away, passing Lawrence Tolliver's barbershop.
"And you thought he was a redhead?" Blackstone asked Tolliver.
"I thought he was a redhead because of all the blood that was all over his face and all over his hair," he responded.
Tolliver wondered where the police had gone.
"They were just standing back," he said.
Beck, now L.A.'s Chief of Police, said the force was caught unprepared.
Driving down Western and seeing massive flames on both sides of you," said Beck. "It's surreal. It's like "Apocalypse Now.""
More than 1,500 businesses were looted or destroyed. Many of the ransacked stores were owned by African Americans.
But for Tolliver's barbershop, there was some protection: A sign on the door that said "Black Owned".
"It's still there. It's a reminder," said Tolliver.
"And a reminder for you of -- ?" asked Blackstone.
"Of a time that, you know as I look back, it was a terrible time. But because of that time, there was progress made," said Tolliver.
Chinese calligraphy In South Los Angeles, the progress isn't always easy to see. Incomes remain low and the unemployment rate is high -- around 20 percent. The area schools rank right at the bottom on standardized test scores.
But the area has 20 percent fewer liquor stores and 50 percent more major supermarkets than in 1992. Gang violence has diminished. And the police force -- once mostly white -- now looks more like the city it patrols.
"There was a huge divide between the police department of this city and the African-American community. How long did it take to close that gap?" Blackstone asked Beck.
"Twenty years (laughs). And we're still closing it," said Beck.
Added Tolliver: "The police are no longer the occupying force that they were."
Tolliver is so impressed by improvements in the police department that three years ago he convinced his son to join the LAPD. For his part, Chief Beck has a son, a daughter, and a son-in-law on the force.
"All three of my kids work in South Los Angeles," said Beck. "We're not just a part of that community -- we are an integral part of that community."
scroll Among the changes in this community in South Central L.A., the population is largely Hispanic rather than African Americans. While there have been improvements, much of the money promised after the riots never arrived and empty lots have remained as scars 20 years later. </p>

<p>craft stores Security agents in Damascus collected the remains of 10 people killed in a suicide bombing on Friday, as activists reported incidents of Syrian troops firing on protesters.
The UN general secretary Ban Ki-moon said President Bashar al-Assad's continued crackdown on protests had reached an "intolerable stage", and that the UN would try to speed up the deployment of up to 300 monitors to Syria. Only 15 are there now. "The government of Syria must live up to its promises to the world," he said.
Tens of thousands of people marched into streets across Syria in what has now become a weekly anti-regime protest after Friday prayers. Amateur video from Homs, where the presence of UN observers helped halt weeks of artillery attacks, showed rows of men lining up in a main street, holding each other by the shoulders as they sang and danced.
In another protest, people held up 45 squares of cardboard with writing and drawings that – when viewed together from above – showed a picture of Assad and the words "oppression, corruption, despotism, demolition". When they simultaneously flipped over the squares, it created a new message that read: "Toward a modern society that is more developed and sensible."
wall hangings Troops have routinely opened fire on protests since the uprising against the Assad regime began 13 months ago, but there appeared to be fewer violent incidents on Friday than in previous weeks.
However, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said five protesters were killed by fire from the security forces, including a 10-year-old boy.
A plan brokered by special envoy Kofi Annan proposed a 12 April ceasefire, to be followed by talks between the regime and the opposition. Since then, the UN said the regime had broken many of its truce promises, such as withdrawing forces from towns and cities. Rebel fighters have also kept up shooting and bombing attacks on Syrian security forces.
British Foreign Office minister Alistair Burt said the UK government would seek "robust action" in the council if Syria did not comply with Annan's plan.
arts and crafts homes The suicide bomber in Damascus detonated an explosives belt on Friday near members of the security forces, killing at least nine people and wounding 26, the state-run news agency Sana reported. The remains of two other people also were found, one believed to be the bomber, according to health minister Nader al-Halqi. The minister said seven police were among the dead.
The blast went off near a mosque in the Midan neighbourhood, an area of opposition sympathisers. The government said it would use an iron fist against those "who might intimidate residents and spread anarchy in the country," Sana reported.
Video on Syrian TV showed white smoke billowing from under a bridge as people streamed out of a mosque.
Chinese calligraphy supplies Three smaller explosions elsewhere in the capital killed one person.
In recent months, there has been a string of bombings in Damascus and elsewhere. The regime blamed Friday's attack on unspecified "terrorists" – the term it uses to describe opposition forces that it says are carrying out a foreign conspiracy. Opposition activists deny any role, saying such blasts are carried out by government forces and meant to tarnish Assad's opponents.</p>

THE women of Nauiyu on the Daly River in the Northern Territory were carefully stripping and dyeing the merrepen palm fibres as Deidre Black looked on. silk paintingUsing the richly coloured fibres as their base material, they set about weaving exquisite baskets and dilly bags -- traditional Aboriginal bags woven from plant matter, in this case the elaborate, fan-leafed trees that decorate the landscape. Black was struck by the precision with which the women worked, and by the stories that flowed as they did so.
"The women told us their dreaming stories [and] we learned . . . about their craft techniques, and observed them painting works with painstaking, intricate detail."
The retired teacher from Melbourne had come to the Daly River -- a region renowned for its scenic beauty and good fishing -- with her husband, Peter, to work as a volunteer on the Merrepen Arts & Sports Festival, Elegants Chinese painting an event held annually to celebrate cultural pride and indigenous knowledge.
They were two of nine volunteers sent by Mary Ward International Australia, the justice and development arm of the Loreto Sisters, which supports the festival host, the Merrepen Arts Centre.
It was a good fit for the couple. Deidre is a former Loreto student and Peter chairs the MWIA Board. "[We'd] travelled through areas of the Northern Territory twice previously and were keen to . . . engage with members of the Aboriginal community not just as tourists," Deidre says.
"This was our first experience of volunteer work outside our own community, and [MWIA] was committed to ensuring that we were as well prepared as possible for the cross-cultural experience by meeting some of the sisters who had worked for many years with various indigenous communities."
In Nauiyu the Blacks discovered a community rich in artistic tradition where about 20, mostly female, artists produce etchings and lino prints, transform fabrics through screen-printing, silk painting and batik, Bird Chinese painting sculpt bowls and figures from papier-mache, and weave dilly bags, fishnets, baskets and sun mats from merrepen and pandanus leaves.
The arts centre serves as a studio for established and emerging artists such as Gracie Kumbi and Patricia McTaggart. The festival -- now in its 26th year -- is a celebration of this artistic output and gives members of the public the opportunity to meet the artists and purchase their work. And for volunteers such as the Blacks, it opens a window on to a whole new world.
"We worked together sewing labels, labelling and pricing articles for sale, cataloguing the artworks and helping to set up display areas for the sale and auction of art," Black says.
"We also assisted . . . by selling craft products, artworks, mango smoothies and coffees."
For the people who live on the Daly River, 250km southwest of Darwin, the volunteers have become an invaluable part of the festival. "Without volunteers it would be difficult for us to stage [it]," says Lizz Bott, chief executive of the Merrepen Arts, Horses Chinese painting Culture and Language Aboriginal Corporation. "Everything they bring to it we appreciate so much.
"We hope they will see how our community operates and learn something from the people here."
Checklist
lindayu on "To the Max: Iconic painter Peter Max visits Hilton Head Island"

Most mornings, Chinese brush paintingthe artist Peter Max will travel to his studio just a few blocks from Central Park in New York City. He has an in-studio deejay who play his favorite music, anything from Chick Corea to The Beatles. He'll open the lid of the case that contains 70-some paints, dip in a brush and touch it to the canvas.
"I don't know where I'm going. It's like a pianist composing music. He'll play a note or two and before he knows it he has a song," he said.
The name Peter Max became synonymous with psychedelic art in the 1960s. His work became so ubiquitous that it would be seen on phone books, stamps, posters. He's an icon, but hasn't settled into icon status. He still paints most days. He travels most weekends out of the year. He still holds exhibits, such as the one that runs through April 29 at the Karis Art Gallery on Hilton Head Island.
"It's my work; it's my life," he said. "It's what I've always done. I'm happy that I can live a creative life."
Max's family fled Nazi Germany and settled in Shanghai, China. His early childhood memories are of the monks next door painting Chinese characters on rice sheets, colorful parades with gigantic paper dragons, Chinese calligraphy trips to the market to buy American comic books and visits to the cinema to see American musicals.
His parents nurtured his artistic side during his childhood. His mother would lay out art supplies around their pagoda house and tell him to start painting -- don't worry about the mess.
After several moves, his family settled in Brooklyn, his dream of coming to the United States finally coming true. Once in America, he started formal art training in Manhattan, initially focusing on realism. He started a small arts studio with friends and started doing advertising work. Inspired by the counter-cultural movement, Max's work started to move more into psychedelia. He capitalized on new developments in print making and turned his original art into vibrant, colorful posters.
"Colors are beautiful, like music is beautiful," he said. "We love sunsets; we love flowers. It's just very attractive to the eyes."
By the late '60s, his work had become mainstream, like the counter-culture itself. He had become a rock star in the art world. He appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and the Tonight Show. His face adorned a cover of Life magazine with the headline "Portrait of the artist as a very rich man."
Max licensed his work to corporations, showing up on everything from socks to clocks. He helped spearhead the restoration of the Statue of Liberty with portraits of the American icon. He's painted on the White House lawn and has been the official artist of the Super Bowl, Grammy Awards and the World Cup. He figures he's painted about 150 celebrities, Leonardo Da Vinci paintingsmost recently a portrait of singer Taylor Swift that he presented to her.
He's 74 years old now, but doesn't have plans anytime soon to slip into a leisurely retirement. "I feel like I'm 42 years old," he said. "I feel like I'm in good shape."
And he'll do exactly like he did when he first started painting as a boy in China: Wake up, take a brush, find paint and start creating.

One of Japan's most celebrated cultural treasures, Camels Chinese painting"Colorful Realm: Japanese Bird-and-Flower Paintings" by Itō Jakuchū (1716-1800) is on view at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., through April 29. The 30-scroll set of bird-and-flower paintings, painted more than 250 years ago, are shown together for the first time outside of Japan, having been lent to the National Gallery of Art by the Imperial Household.
Earl A. Powell III, director of the National Gallery of Art said,
The National Gallery of Art is deeply honored to present this exquisite set of 30 scrolls to visitors from around the world who will be in Washington for a very special National Cherry Blossom Festival.
This is the centennial celebration of Japan's gift to Washington, D.C., of 3,000 cherry blossom trees.
I was in Washington, D.C. for Arts Advocacy Day, an event sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts at the White House. I landed just after the space shuttle Discovery flew over the Mall. It was a poignant experience, Ducks Chinese paintingas I had been commissioned by NASA (one of my four NASA commissions) to paint the Discovery shuttle return to flight after the Columbia tragedy, and my painting of the Discovery shuttle is also on exhibit in Washington, D.C.
When I landed in D.C., I went straight to the National Gallery of Art, where I was fortunate to see this exhibit. The renderings on silk are breathtaking. There is a wonderful simplicity in the design and details. Chinese painting I had lived in Asia for a year, the recipient of a grant from The Henry Luce Foundation, and I spent that year painting and studying Chinese brush painting. Although these are Japanese masterpieces, there are similarities to a western novice of Chinese brush painting.
I thought it would be fun to study Chinese brush painting and I thought it would be a breeze, as I was a painter. How wrong I was. I was taught classical painting and struggled with the bamboo, my flowers looked anemic. The brush is held in a very different way and holds the pigments differently than our western brushes. I quickly realized that something that looked so easy and simple to do was really a lifetime of work and study. Koi Fishes Chinese paintingI did continue with the painting and eventually incorporated the brushes and brushwork into my own watercolors.
The exhibit is beautiful. The technical expertise and brush handling is exquisite. The flower painting -- peonies with butterfly -- was perhaps my favorite, maybe because I finally learned how to paint the peony and butterfly.
This is the last few days of the exhibit and well worth a visit if you are in Washington, Roaring Tiger Chinese paintingD.C.</p>

<p>Chinese painting Rupert Murdoch used his testimony before a U.K. inquiry to portray himself as the victim, not perpetrator, of a cover-up over phone hacking — a bold claim unlikely to be accepted by those suing his company for invading their privacy.
The 81-year-old media magnate apologized. He said he had failed. He noted that the corporate cleanup of the British phone hacking scandal had cost his New York-based News Corp. hundreds of millions of dollars and transformed its culture.
"I failed, and I'm sorry about it," Murdoch said Thursday, adding later: "We are now a new company altogether."
Murdoch's two days of testimony, which began Wednesday, marked his attempt to corral the scandal that has rocked Britain, tainted senior politicians, prompted top police commanders and media executives to resign and affected large swathes of his media empire.
It boiled over in July after it became clear that journalists at Murdoch's now-shuttered News of the World tabloid routinely broke the law in pursuit of scoops, with Murdoch-friendly police and politicians turning a blind eye to a litany of abuses including illegal espionage and bribery.
The scandal prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to order a wide-ranging judicial inquiry into the country's media, which has heard from a range of journalists and public figures. Murdoch's testimony was the most hotly anticipated thus far.
Chinese calligraphy Murdoch's words, delivered under oath, offered an unusual public glimpse into the media mogul's personality, alternately combative and contrite. Murdoch showed the occasional sign of annoyance, but pointed questions about his alleged vast political influence and business interests were largely parried with firm denials and touches of dry wit.
A few new revelations tumbled out, among them his admission Thursday that his dramatic decision to shut down the 168-year-old News of the World — the Sunday paper at the center of the scandal — was an impulse move. He said he snapped his fingers and "it was done like that."
"I panicked. But I'm glad I did," Murdoch said, explaining that he'd long wanted to replace the paper with a Sunday edition of The Sun, his top-selling tabloid.
Murdoch also revealed that he had been taken aback at the size of the 2008 payout made to phone hacking victim and former England soccer manager Gordon Taylor — testimony at odds with what his son James Murdoch told the inquiry earlier in the week.
The elder Murdoch's admission was important, because critics have alleged that the $1 million settlement to Taylor — 10 to 20 times larger than a typical payout for breach of privacy — was intended to bury the hacking scandal.
Chinese brush painting If James Murdoch knew that the settlement was outrageously large when he signed off on it, it would strengthen the argument that the 39-year-old media executive knew that the payout was aimed at hiding wrongdoing.
The younger Murdoch said Tuesday that, at the time, he had no way of knowing whether the sum was particularly large. But the elder Murdoch expressed no such doubts Thursday.
"The size seemed incredible," Murdoch said. "It still does seem incredible."
Overall, Murdoch stuck to the line that he and his son were deliberately kept in the dark by subordinates about the illegal behavior at the News of the World.
"The senior executives were all misinformed, and shielded from anything that was going on there," he told the inquiry. "I do blame one or two people for that."
He didn't name them, but he identified one as "a clever lawyer" who shared drinks with many of the journalists involved — a transparent reference to News International legal manager Tom Crone.
Crone, in a statement, called Murdoch's testimony "a shameful lie."
Murdoch seemed to catch Lord Justice Brian Leveson, the head of the media inquiry, off guard with his statement that "a journalist doing a favor for someone and getting a favor back is pretty much everyday practice."
"It's a common thing in life, well beyond journalism, for people to say: 'I'll scratch your back if you scratch my back,'" Murdoch said.
scroll The comment came as a surprise because Murdoch and his son James had spent much of their testimony denying that they ever traded favors with top politicians.
Observers say Murdoch largely dodged the potential pitfalls during his testimony.
"Rupert got the best of them," said Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff.
Murdoch may have performed well, but storm clouds still linger over News Corp.
U.K. police, parliamentary and regulatory investigations into the company are ongoing on both sides of the Atlantic. Just as Murdoch finished testifying, British broadcasting regulator Ofcom announced it was expanding its investigation into his U.K. satellite broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC.
At the same time, British lawmakers announced that they would publish their long-delayed report into the phone-hacking scandal on May 1.
Chinese painting Murdoch's testimony Thursday appeared to have little effect on News Corp.'s New York-listed shares, which were up slightly, 0.6 percent, at $19.38. At the height of the phone-hacking scandal last summer, the company's stock price had sunk to $13.38.</p>

<p> craft stores Barack Obama's selection of Joe Biden as his running mate in 2008 gave the Democratic ticket greater heft on foreign policy, often a perceived weakness for Democrats in presidential races.
Now, just shy of the first anniversary of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, the president's reelection campaign is trying to use Biden to turn national security into a political weapon against Mitt Romney, the presumed Republican nominee.
In a blistering speech Thursday in New York, Biden quoted Romney as saying in 2008 that it was "not worth moving heaven and Earth, spending billions of dollars" trying to catch the Al Qaeda leader.
Biden then suggested Democrats print a campaign bumper sticker: "Bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive."
"You have to ask yourself, if Gov. Romney had been president, could he have used the same slogan in reverse?" Biden asked. "People are going to make that judgment. It's a legitimate thing to speculate on."
Whether that argument gives President Obama an advantage at the polls, or simply blunts a Republican line of attack, is unclear in an election season that is likely to hinge on pocketbook concerns.
Chinese calligraphy supplies But as Obama prepares to make his first official public campaign appearances on May 5, Biden's speech represents an effort to quickly frame the election on Democratic terms.
Next month will give Obama two opportunities to show himself as a confident leader on the world stage, with the Group of 8 leaders summit at Camp David and a NATO summit in his hometown of Chicago.
If he succeeds, Obama will be the rare Democrat to control the national security debate. In 2004, John F. Kerry highlighted his military service record at his nominating convention, only to see the issue backfire when a conservative-backed ad campaign questioned aspects of his Vietnam record.
This year marks the first presidential election in nearly 70 years in which neither major party nominee served in the military. The last time was in 1944, when DemocratFranklin D. Roosevelt, who had served as civilian secretary of the Navy, won reelection by beating Republican Thomas Dewey.
arts and crafts homes The GOP has gained little ground by criticizing Obama's foreign policy record so far. A Reuters/Ipsos poll this month found that by a double-digit margin, voters said Obama was stronger than Romney on national security and foreign policy issues.
But Romney had the advantage on jobs and the economy, which voters say is a bigger priority. A recent Pew survey found that the percentage of voters who say terrorism is very important in determining their vote is down 9 percentage points from 2008 and 16 percentage points from 2004.
In focus groups of voters in battleground states conducted by GOP-aligned Resurgent Republic, the issue of national security was raised only rarely, typically when the voters were asked to identify Obama's successes.
"But [it] just gets so overwhelmed by economy, jobs, spending and debt that it gets so little airtime," said Republican pollster Whit Ayres, who oversaw one of the discussions.
In his 45-minute speech at New York University, Biden tried to link the president's successes in foreign affairs to his stewardship of the economy. He argued that the auto industry rescue and other economic policies "made us stronger not only at home, but abroad."
He also blamed Romney's "loose talk" of war with Iran, in part, for unsettled oil markets and higher gas prices at home. Republicans have blamed Obama's energy policies for a recent surge in prices.
wall hangings The Democrats' focus is not without risk. The political advantage could shift before November, particularly given the standoff with Iran over its nuclear program, Europe's economic crisis, the precarious state of the war in Afghanistan and other hot spots.
James Carafano, an analyst at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, said the Obama campaign had "done everything possible to try to get through between now and November with nothing happening. It's kind of the opposite of wag the dog, and the October surprise."
"Unless there is something catastrophically bad or catastrophically good that happens between now and the election, people are going to vote for their candidate based on other issues," he added.
"Foreign policy highlights many of the president's strengths — this balance of deliberation and decisiveness — and highlights a lot of Romney's weaknesses, of both not being sure quite where he stands and also that it seems he's surrounded by the very people who got us into this mess from the far right," said Tom Perriello, a former Democratic congressman from Virginia who is an analyst for the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank.
To the extent that Romney has engaged with Obama on foreign policy, he has focused on the administration's tense relationship withIsrael'sleaders and alleged "appeasement" of Iran.
He also pounced when Obama was overheard recently telling Russian President Dmitri Medvedev that he would have greater "flexibility" to negotiate on missile defense in a second term.
craft stores But Romney's response, in which he told a television interviewer that Russia was the nation's "No. 1 geopolitical foe," offered Biden the chance to punch back, accusing him of a "Cold War mind-set."
"Unfortunately, Gov. Romney's apparent determination to take U.S.-Russian relations back to the '50s also causes him to misstate the facts," he said.</p>

NEW YORK —Camels Chinese paintingTwo paintings that resurfaced 31 years after being stolen during a violent home invasion in Massachusetts will be auctioned in New York City next month.
"In the Sun" by American impressionist painter Childe Hassam will be sold at Sotheby's on May 17 as part of its American Art sale for an estimated $1.5 million to $2.5 million, the auction house said Thursday.
The richly colored canvas, Roaring Tiger Chinese painting created in 1888, depicts a woman in a flower garden near Paris shielding her face from the sun with a fan.
The other work, "The Shore of Lake Geneva" by French artist Gustave Courbet, will be sold at Sotheby's 19th Century European Art sale on May 4. The painting, which has a pre-sale estimate of $200,000 to $300,000, shows an empty lake beach against a stand of trees.
They were among three paintings pilfered on July 2, 1976, from a Shrewsbury, Ducks Chinese painting Mass., home. Three armed bandits tied up the owner, Mae Persky, and her nurse companion and caretaker before ransacking the house and also stealing the painting, "Lady as Shepherdess" by English artist William Hamilton.
The two paintings are being offered for sale by the heirs of the estate, Sotheby's said. Their plans for the Hamilton work were not disclosed The paintings resurfaced in 2007 when a Newport, R.I., art dealer contacted the FBI after a lawyer and developer, Patrick Conley, Chinese painting brought them for an appraisal.
Conley said he got the paintings from his brother, an antiques dealer, but didn't know they were stolen.
In 2008, a consent agreement in Rhode Island federal court awarded the works to Judith Yoffie, the sole surviving relative of Persky's estate. Persky died in 1979; Yoffie died in March 2008.
No one has ever been arrested in the case. The robbers, who also reportedly stole furs, rugs and silverware from the house, Koi Fishes Chinese paintingled the scene in the caretaker's car, later found abandoned near the Rhode Island border.</p>

This month the world lost the renowned sculptor and printmaker, Staring Eagle Chinese paintingElizabeth Catlett. With family and friends preparing to travel to her home in Cuernavaca, Mexico, for celebration, she died days shy of her 96th birthday.
I visited her at home years ago. Ushered past romantic Mexican walls along an idyllic garden corridor into a true "living" room, I was welcomed into a place two people had made into a world all their own.
Behind the living room, at opposite ends of the courtyard were their separate studios. Throughout the workday, husband and wife would walk back and forth, exchanging critiques, encouragement, fruit.
"We work collectively," said Elizabeth of her marriage to fellow artist Francisco Mora, known as Pancho to family and friends -- a revolutionary of the brush inspired by a revolutionary of the people.
In the word "collectively" was the freedom she had found in a land where among the stories not told north of the Rio Grande about the Alamo was this: the newly seized Texas wanted a slave state, while Mexico, having ended Spanish slavery, had already elected a black president.
Nearly a century old, Catlett lived the traumatic, albeit promising, history that would yield the United States' first African-American president.
As a high school student, she had won, on the merits of a competitive exam, a scholarship to attend Carnegie Institute, Horses Chinese painting only to have the scholarship withdrawn on account of racism. Devastated, she was revived by her mother and acceptance by Howard University -- an HBCU, Historically Black College/University -- in 1932.
At Howard, she was welcomed into the world of African-American scholarship. Thinking herself a designer, she studied textiles with scholar/painter Lois Mailou Jones. Art history professor James Herring introduced her to African sculpture. Her painting teacher, James A. Porter, ushered in the Mexican muralists, and young Catlett declared a major in painting.
As artist, African American, and woman, Catlett etched a place for herself in art. Art was inspiration. Art was power. Art empowered.
In the 1940s and 1950s, as black vets left foreign battlefields for the racial minefields of home, some artists sought acceptance in the art world by downplaying their identity as blacks. They decried the once all-black shows borne of necessity as self-segregation.
Not so, said Elizabeth Catlett. Black exhibitions did not mean segregated exhibitions; there was a difference between what one chose and what one was forced to do.
"Let us take our painting and prints and sculpture," said she, "not only to Atlanta University, to the art galleries, and to patrons of the arts who have money to buy them; let us exhibit where Negro people meet -- in the churches, silk painting in the schools and universities, in the associations and clubs and trade unions. Then let us seek inspiration in the Negro people -- a principal and never-ending source."
Her stand was revolutionary for its time; a time when -- in art as in life -- McCarthyism dominated all like the strokes of a too-broad brush on a narrow canvas. Catlett's growing appeal as an artist in the 1950s made her the target of freedom's foes -- purveyors of fear and racist oppression.
Receiving a fellowship in the late 1940s to travel to Mexico City to study painting, sculpture and lithography, she had worked with the People's Graphic Arts Workshop -- a group of printmakers dedicated to using their art to promote social change. That was her "crime."
For being true to her art; for championing the need for social change in a segregated pre-Civil Rights-era America; for speaking artful truth on the plight of African Americans, Bird Chinese paintingand for refusing assimilation into "the mass of American artists who must say nothing socially," she was hounded and blacklisted by the U.S. government.
The fact that her husband, the son of a poor family, envisioned in art an obligation to work for the people -- the Mexican railroad workers, in particular -- was seen as further cause for intimidation.
Even in Mexico, beyond U.S. borders, McCarthy-era zealotry harassed Catlett for her interests and friendships of twenty years earlier. Was there no statute of limitations?
By the 1980s, when I met her, as with the bad times, there seemed no limitation on the good, either. Her home -- her "living" room -- was a lush, peaceful place, its structure hewn of a steadfast tenacity of spirit.
There, in that time, Elegants Chinese paintingwe talked of love -- of work, of art, for one's spouse, and of life. She is loved and missed.</p>

Italy in unfamiliar role in seizure of 'Christ Carrying the Cross'
Flower Vase painting
The Italian government has been persistent, tenacious and very effective in forcing repatriation of its looted antiquities. Seizing the ethical high ground, then playing legal and diplomatic hardball, it has extracted scores of prized objects from American museums.</p>
<p>None was hit harder than L.A.'s Getty Museum, which has bid adieu to 40 pieces Italy was able to prove had been illegally dug from its soil.</p>
<p>But last week, the tables turned. This time, the Italian government was the party caught owning an ill-gotten prize, "Christ Carrying the Cross," painted around 1538 by Renaissance master Girolamo Romanino.
Prowling Crane painting
The Italians lost the painting through a blunder that dumbfounds experts: Before sending it to Florida for an exhibition last year, they failed to insist upon easily available protection under a long-standing U.S. law that gives foreign-owned art immunity from seizure while on loan for nonprofit exhibitions.</p>
<p>"Christ Carrying the Cross" had belonged to the Gentilis, an Italian Jewish family living in Paris that fled the invading Nazis. In 1941, Nazi-controlled French authorities sold the collection. In 1998, the Italian government bought the Romanino from a private owner and hung it in the Pinacoteca di Brera, a government-run museum in Milan. Italy ignored the Gentili heirs' requests for its return — unlike France, where a court ruling in 1999 prompted the Louvre to turn over five of its paintings.
Light Yellow Flowers painting
"Christ Carrying the Cross" came to Tallahassee, Fla., in March 2011 along with the 49 other paintings in "Baroque Painting in Lombardy From the Pinacoteca di Brera." The show was a very big deal for the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science — a small institution that was putting up the first exhibition of foreign art in its 12-year history.</p>
<p>While the Romanino hung in Tallahassee, said Corinne Hershkovitch, attorney for the Gentili heirs, a staff member from Christie's auction house — which had helped the Gentilis sell the paintings returned by France, including one by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo that the Getty Museum bought for $2.2 million — visited the Pinacoteca di Brera and noticed that its usual spot was bare.
Purple Iris painting
A notice said it was on loan to the Mary Brogan Museum. Interpol was alerted, and soon Pamela Marsh, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Florida, and investigators from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were on the case.</p>
<p>At first they feared they would not have a case.</p>
<p>Since the 1960s, the Immunity From Judicial Seizure Act, intended to promote a rich cultural exchange with other countries, has specified that foreign-owned artworks lent for nonprofit exhibitions in the United States can't be confiscated, period.
Cherry Tree painting</p>

Colorful Realm,' 18th Century Japanese silk painting Make Rare U.S. Appearance
'Colorful Realm,' 18th Century Japanese silk painting Make Rare U.S. Appearance
GWEN IFILL: Finally tonight, a treasure trove of Japanese painting makes its way to the United States, just in time for a spring celebration in the nation's capital.</p>
<p>Judy Woodruff had the opportunity to get a first look.</p>
<p>JUDY WOODRUFF: It's not every day that an art exhibition receives an exalted blessing, but the 30 painted silk scrolls that make up the Colorful Realm of Living Beings were heralded with prayer, incense and pageantry by monks of the Shokokuji monastery in Kyoto.</p>
<p>The magisterial, but very fragile collection of masterpieces is a Japanese national treasure, painted in the mid-18th century by the virtuosic nature painter Ito Jakuchu. But it is almost never seen in public.
Chinese calligraphy
Think of the Mona Lisa, 30 of her, or the Van Gogh Starry Night being kept from view on a near permanent basis. Then you would have an idea how rare an occasion it is to see work of such importance.
Yukio Lippit, a Harvard professor of Japanese art, is the exhibit's guest curator.</p>
<p>YUKIO LIPPIT, guest curator, National Gallery of Art: Colorful Realm took over 10 years to make. It is an encyclopedia of technique and use of materials. It's also very experimental. And it really has no known precedents in Japanese and East Asian painting traditions.</p>
<p>JUDY WOODRUFF: The scrolls of Colorful Realm are on display together for the first time ever outside Japan at Washington's National Gallery, the product of sensitive diplomatic and cultural negotiation.
<p>The collection is widely considered the finest example of Japanese nature painting. The 30-scroll series is on loan from the Imperial Household. A Jakuchu triptych of the Buddha and two bodhisattvas, the centerpiece of the exhibit, was sent by the monks of Shokokuji, to whom the artist gave it nearly 250 years ago.
YUKIO LIPPIT: It was meant to be used for a Buddhist ceremony one day per year. And so to have it displayed for four weeks in Washington is a very special occasion.</p>
<p>JUDY WOODRUFF: The works are part of the centennial celebration in Washington of the 1912 Japanese imperial gift of cherry trees which line the Tidal Basin. The yearly blooming is a rite of spring here.

<p>Chinese painting President Barack Obama went after the college vote Tuesday, pitching cheaper student loans as he courted the one age group where he has a decided advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney. The twist? Romney, too, has endorsed the idea, though it's unclear whether deficit-leery Republicans in Congress will go along.
In the race for the White House, both the Obama and Romney campaigns see huge opportunities to court younger voters. This week, their efforts are focused on the millions of students — and their parents — who are grappling with college costs at a time when such debt has grown so staggering it exceeds the totals for credit cards or auto loans.
Trying to make it personal, Obama told students at the University of North Carolina that he and first lady Michelle Obama had "been in your shoes" and didn't pay off their student loans until eight years ago.
"I didn't just read about this. I didn't just get some talking points about this. I didn't just get a policy briefing on this," Obama said. "We didn't come from wealthy families. When we graduated from college and law school, we had a mountain of debt. When we married, we got poor together."
Obama's emphasis on his personal experience set up a contrast with Romney, whose father was a wealthy auto executive. It's a point the president is sure to return to during this summer's campaigning.
Chinese calligraphy Late Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., introduced legislation that would keep the interest rate for subsidized loans for poorer and middle-class students at their current level for another year at a cost of $5.9 billion. The timing is important because the rate will double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent on July 1 without intervention by Congress, an expiration date chosen in 2007 when a Democratic Congress voted to chop the rate in half.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has estimated about 15 percent of Americans, or 37 million people, have outstanding student loan debt. The bank puts the total at $870 billion, though other estimates have reached $1 trillion. About two-thirds of student loan debt is held by people under 30.
Members of both parties are assessing ways to cover the costs and then gain the votes in the House and Senate. Both parties have a political incentive to keep the rates as they are.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Tuesday, "I don't think anybody believes this interest rate ought to be allowed to rise." He added, "The question is how do you pay for it, how long do you do the extension."
Under the Democratic plan, the measure would be paid for by closing a loophole that lets owners of privately owned companies called S corporations avoid paying the Social Security and Medicare payroll tax on part of their earnings. It would apply to such companies with incomes over $250,000. The higher payroll taxes would also be required for some law firms, doctors practices and other professional services partnerships.
Chinese brush painting Congressional Republicans, however, were panning the idea of paying for the student loan plan with higher payroll taxes on those companies' owners.
"I don't think the temporary interest rate cut should expire this year," McConnell said. "But the way to prevent that is not by raiding Social Security and Medicare while making it more difficult for small businesses to hire college students already struggling in the Obama economy."
Romney said this week that he agrees the loan rates shouldn't be raised, coupling that stance with criticism of Obama's economic leadership.
"Given the bleak job prospects that young Americans coming out of college face today, I encourage Congress to temporarily extend the low rate," Romney said in a statement.
Some conservative activists have denounced Romney's decision to match Obama's position on student loan rates.
"Mitt Romney is going to sell out conservatives in his party" to improve his chances in the November election, Michael Brendan Dougherty wrote in a blog carried by sites including Free Republic.
By taking on student debt, Obama spoke to middle-class America and also targeted a growing economic burden that could hamper the national recovery.
scroll While leaning on Republicans in Congress to act, he also sought to energize the young people essential to his campaign — those who voted for him last time and the many more who have turned voting age since then. Obama urged students to go to social media sites like Twitter to pressure their lawmakers to prevent the interest rates on the loans "from shooting up and shaking you down."
He also spoke to college journalists on a conference call from Air Force One, reiterating many of the same points he made in his address at Chapel Hill.
The blurring between Obama's official and campaign events emerged here in Tar Heel country, with Obama encouraging students to give him an "Amen" at times (they did) and the crowd also giving him an unsolicited chant of "Four more years!" On a blue-sky, breezy day, Obama soaked in the youth vibe on campus, where he also appeared in a taping of "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."
With Romney seemingly assured of sweeping the five Republican presidential primaries being held Tuesday, the former Massachusetts governor planned a focus on the general election with a speech in New Hampshire titled "A Better America Begins Tonight."
Chinese brush painting Ahead of the speech, Romney supporters said Obama's policies had hurt younger voters and questioned whether the president could garner the same amount of support as in 2008.
"Young people are sitting here three and a half years later and they're not better off," said Alex Schriver, chairman of the College Republican National Committee.
The president was also speaking Tuesday at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and then at the University of Iowa on Wednesday. All three schools are in states that Obama carried in 2008, and all three states are considered among the several that could swing to Obama or Romney and help decide a close 2012 election.
Before his speech on the Colorado campus, Obama went after students in a likely place to find them — a bar. He stopped in Boulder at "The Sink," shaking hands with young people enjoying beers and burgers. Obama roamed the patio area and went table-by-table inside, chatting up students about their ideas. One woman said she wanted to start a restaurant based on cheese fries. "Sounds good," he said.
Obama carried voters between the ages of 18-29 by a margin of about 2-to-1 in 2008, but many recent college graduates have had difficulty finding jobs. That raises concerns for the president about whether they will vote and volunteer for him in such large numbers again.
Without mentioning her by name in his Chapel Hill speech, Obama cited North Carolina Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx, quoting her from a recent radio interview with G. Gordon Liddy in which she said, "I have very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt."
Chinese painting Obama said allowing the interest rates to double this summer would hurt more than 7 million students, costing the average student $1,000 and amounting to a "tax hike" for those students and their families.
"Anybody here can afford to pay an extra thousand dollars right now?" Obama asked to jeers from the crowd. "I don't think so."</p>

<p> craft stores With victories expected in five Northeastern primaries, Mitt Romney prepared to claim the mantle of Republican presidential nominee — though he has not officially clinched the race — and turn his focus to a general election showdown with President Obama.
Romney was poised to win primaries in Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Delaware — contests whose outcomes seemed all but assured two weeks ago when his chief rival, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, suspended his campaign. The Associated Press projected Romney had won Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island after polls there closed.
The former Massachusetts governor entered the day just shy of 700 delegates, with 209 at stake Tuesday and 1,144 needed to cinch the nomination.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, winner of two primaries, and Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who has built a loyal following but has yet to win a primary, remained in the race even though neither has a mathematical chance of winning the nomination.
In remarks prepared for delivery in New Hampshire, where his campaign began almost a year ago, Romney is to congratulate the other contenders for a hard-fought race and thank his supporters for “a great honor and solemn responsibility.”
In an echo of Ronald Reagan’s question — “Are you better off than you were four years ago” — during his 1980 presidential campaign, Romney will ask Americans to consider Obama’s “sweeping promises of hope and change.”
Chinese calligraphy supplies “After we came down to earth, after the celebration and parades, what do we have to show for three and a half years of President Obama?” Romney will say, according to speech excerpts released by his campaign. "We have seen hopes and dreams diminished by false promises and weak leadership. Everywhere I go, Americans are tired of being tired, and many of those who are fortunate enough to have a job are working harder for less.
“To all of the thousands of good and decent Americans I’ve met who want nothing more than a better chance, a fighting chance — to all of you, I have a simple message: Hold on a little longer. A better America begins tonight.”
Gingrich has pledged to fight on until the party’s convention in Tampa, Fla., but he has drastically curtailed his schedule as his campaign grapples with $4.3 million in debt and pressure from a Republican leaders to bow out. His hopes of a resurgence were pinned on a win in Delaware.
Though the campaign says upcoming primaries in North Carolina, Kentucky and West Virginia could be fertile ground for Gingrich, aides said the candidate may begin reassessing his effort as soon as Wednesday depending on Tuesday night’s results.
arts and crafts homes At an appearance in Charlotte, N.C., Gingrich said Romney was presumptuous to begin his head-to-head campaign against Obama before all the primaries have been held.
“I think it's a very substantial mistake for Gov. Romney to give a general election speech tonight in New Hampshire. He is not the nominee. I think it's a little insulting to people in these states,” Gingrich told reporters, the Associated Press reported.
The movements by Gingrich and Paul have largely been a sideshow for the Romney campaign, which is now engaged in rapid build-out of its organization at its Boston headquarters and in key primary states. The campaign has established a joint finance committee to raise money with the Republican National Committee, which has been staffing up in swing states in preparation for the fall campaign. Romney’s aides have also pulled together a task force headed by longtime advisor Beth Myers to begin the search for Romney’s running mate.
Tuesday's primaries throughout the Northeast are expected to give Obama enough delegates to officially clinch the Democratic nomination for a second term. The milestone comes more than a month earlier than it did in 2008, when Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton battled each other until the final primary contests in early June.
wall hangings While the fall campaign has already gotten off to a brisk start with the Romney and Obama campaigns engaging on a daily basis over the last few weeks, Romney is still facing some major challenges within his party. His campaign has been working to win over reluctant conservatives and well as key leaders within the evangelical movement who favored other candidates.
Romney’s favorability ratings have slumped dramatically over the course of a bruising primary campaign, where he often notched his victories after millions of dollars of negative advertising attacking his opponents. In a number of key states like Ohio, polls show that he has grown less popular with voters the more they get to know him.
Though Romney has remained competitive with Obama in head-to-head polls, he is facing a deficit among key demographic groups including women and Latinos and has stepped up efforts to connect with those voters — though he has not unveiled any new policies to attract them.
Romney has begun a new effort to aggressively challenge the president at various locations throughout the country — delivering a speech last week near where Obama will deliver his Democratic convention address, and following to Obama to refute his economic message. Fundraising will also be a major focus for the former Massachusetts governor.
craft stores He will spend two days in New York and New Jersey later this week stocking his campaign treasury for the months ahead.</p>

ShareThisReport by OrissaDiary.com bureau; silk painting New Delhi: Now a days Art has no language and recognizes no boundary. Opened in New Delhi, ‘Mayukha’ an exhibition of Oil, Acrylics and Tempora Paintings becoming a major subject of discussion in the town now a days. This exhibition, includes the art works of both Odisha based senior artists Mr. Chandramani Biswal and his wife Smt. Sailabala Nayak, would only serve to bring vibrancy to the art, participants and art connoisseurs. This exhibition mounted at the palm court Gallery of the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi had around 45 art works on display.
For Chandramani Biswal, art is a specific form of life. Experimenting on the canvas is his deep emotion, brush and cotton pieces are his means of expression and occasionally monochromatic transparent colour treatment comprise his exclusive vocabulary. Painting comes naturally to him, his strokes being governed by instinct. His early painting series, captioned as “Dying century” won him world wide recognition.
This series comprises more than two hundred works which represent the symbolical objects. The detail of his drawing the wind, the temporal messenger, the love letter, attendants, clouds all disappear while the lotus, garden, dilapidated mountain, limbs of blood and flesh mostly commanded with soft intensity of red, green, Elegants Chinese paintingblue and brown tint and other appeared.
A characteristic feature of his painting is the use of informal female sitter which bears no face, no feet and fingers, lounges on the empty scape of stand facing from either direction. The relative aspect of this omition is to deject sexual appeal of the character and this device directs him to present the emotional dream with moral spirit.
The woman figures symbolize the nature instead of feminity, beauty, frustration, sex or romance. Depicted in various shades these figures convey the universal energy that is slowly dying in this series. He further adds that nature contains series of centuries which in every moment is uncertain and the deserted, unidentified female form seems to create a feeling of undying split of human kind. “we have to stop the energy from deteriorations further to save the century”, he said.
The art object incorporate with the Indian mythology does not actual live and breathe but gives the illusion of life. The illusion of pulsating vitality created within the art object is the result of creative devices employed by smt. Sailabala Nayak. She says the artist can paint any thing he wishes, anyway he wishes but with atleast a minimal preference of individual brand or of the smell of own mother land.
With this context the art works of tempera on silk and acrylic on canvas are cast in Indian traditional mould with rustic and feminist themes. There is lyricism about her art that makes one feel that it is true Indian visual poetry. She believes in giving modern touches to traditional concepts and draws on treasure trove of Odisha’s traditional painting. For her, women is another name of dignity, Bird Chinese painting grace and poetry. But she does not recognize the individuality of a woman free spirit needs to be respected but not at the cost of societal custom and cultural tradition.
Art is meaningless if it does not attract the common man and not communicate any language or message. It should be sensitize the man for understanding the beauty in line, form, colour, space, texture and theme. For this one artist has to maintain some important qualities of a creative thought, a command on his creativity and a liberal expression. At any cost, art works be not lost in the purposeless pursuits of the academic discipline.
She speaks- “I have a choice, although for modernism but never try to disintegrate the immortal beauty of the nature absolutely by a western formula. My art subject to a modification and moderation is of the public and for the public. Further she adds - “ I always try to explain a passionate love for the beloved which transforms bare sex impulses in to ecstatic religions of the Bhakti Cult weaned away the people. For the senseless ritualism of medieval Hinduism in which mysteries of sex were exalted but which in course of time degenerated in to orgies of debauchery. I have try to depict the charming costumes, Horses Chinese paintingjoyous moving eyes, river Yamuna with lotus, blue sky, low green mountains, colourful birds and religious hero – heroins on the bed of leaves or river bed for realizing the sense of mystical affinity between the life of nature and the life of man and between the beauty of flowers and the beauty of love. The social and mythological subjects luminously depicted either on the silk board or on the canvas are of true smell of pure modified Indian style. Her teacher and father Mr. Rabinarayan Nayak’s style, compositional sense, pliable drawing and befitting mode of colouring though influences but clearly not retaken by her. A long professional career, adequate knowledge and experience could enable her to overtake all of her contemporaries of the state and abroad. Staring Eagle Chinese paintingThis exhibition started on 22nd Aril and will be on view till 27th April 2012</p>

China official says Proview owns iPad trademark
jordan retro shoesApple Inc. risks losing the right to use the iPad trademark in China, a senior official suggested Tuesday, as a Chinese court was seeking to mediate a settlement between the technology giant and a local company challenging its use of the iPad name.Yan Xiaohong, deputy director of the National Copyright Administration, told reporters in Beijing that the government regards Shenzhen Proview Technology as the rightful owner of the trademark for the popular tablet computers. His remarks could add to pressure on Apple to find a solution to the standoff.Yan's comments followed news that the Guangdong High Court in southern China is seeking to arrange a settlement in the case. In late February, the court began hearing Apple's appeal of a lower court ruling that favored Proview in the trademark dispute."The dispute between Apple and Shenzhen Proview concerning the iPad trademark is going through the judicial process," Yan said in a news conference carried on the Internet. But he added that "according to our government's laws, Shenzhen Proview is still the lawful representative and user of the trademark."China has sought to showcase its determination to protect trademarks and other intellectual property, but with hundreds of thousands employed in the assembly of
adidas originals saleApple's iPhones and iPads is unlikely to want to disrupt the company's production and marketing in China.Ma Dongxiao, a lawyer for Proview said the company had expected all along to settle with Apple, with the key sticking point being the amount of money involved."It is likely that we will settle out of court. The Guangdong High Court is helping to arrange it and the court also expects to do so," Ma said in a phone interview.Court officials contacted by phone said they were not authorized to comment on the issue to foreign media."Given the wide implications of this case we need to wait to see the final ruling of the court, which will decide the ownership rights for the trademark," Yan said. "We will proceed with the case in a prudent manner."He said commercial authorities that had received complaints about Apple's use of the iPad trademark were collecting evidence."Once the ruling emerges we will handle the case according to the evidence we have," he said.Chinese courts often try to mediate agreements out of court. But it is unclear whether Apple is open to that option.
cheap adidas running shoes saleProview, a financially troubled maker of computer displays and LED lights, says it registered the iPad trademark more than a decade ago. Apple says Proview sold it worldwide rights to the iPad trademark in 2009, though the registration was never transferred for China.Proview's other worldwide trademarks for the iPad name were owned by another subsidiary of the Proview Group, Taiwan-based Proview Electronics. But the mainland China trademark was registered by Shenzhen Proview. An Apple spokeswoman, Carolyn Wu, said the company had no new comment on the possibility of a settlement with Proview. In a statement, Apple reiterated its earlier insistence that it would never "knowingly abuse someone else's trademarks."The statement adds that Proview "still owe a lot of people a lot of money, they are now unfairly trying to get more from Apple for a trademark we already paid for."China's rigid capital rules ban its citizens from investing directly in Apple Inc but that's not keeping them from seeking a piece of the iPhone maker's success by buying shares in its suppliers - and even companies rumored to be suppliers.Investors have flocked to the only two China-listed firms that Apple has confirmed as suppliers, sending their
jordan pantonevaluations to lofty levels, while speculation has become rife in firms thought to be indirectly doing business with the technology giant.Suzhou Anjie Technology Co Ltd has jumped more than 30 percent and Warren Buffett-backecarmaker BYD Co Ltd has gained more than 15 percent since mid-January, when they were cited on Apple's first-ever suppliers' list. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index is up 5.6 percent for the same period."Investors want to share in Apple's growth as they believe sales of iPhones and iPads will remain strong," said Zhou Feng, analyst at Donghai Securities Co."Investing in Apple suppliers is not a bad idea, since they're the girls hanging out with the rich guy."Shares of Apple, which is listed on the Nasdaq, hit a record high of $644.00 this month. They have since fallen 11 percent, closing at $571.70 on Monday, but are still up 41 percent in 2012.The closest that Chinese individuals can get to owning Apple shares, given the ban on the direct purchase of overseas stocks, is to buy into one of the overseas investment funds permitted under China's Qualified
cheap adidas basketball sneakers Domestic Institutional Investor (QDII) scheme that have invested in Apple.QDII is China's main channel for outbound investment by individuals in foreign capital markets. The biggest exposure to Apple in a QDII fund is around 20 percent, via the Guotai Nasdaq-100 Index Fund which tracks the Nasdaq-100 Index. The fund has gained 7.3 percent during the past 12 months, compared with a 21 percent drop in China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index.Given their limited access, many local investors have turned to China-listed firms that directly or indirectly do business with Apple as proxies for the world's most valuable company.Such a trading strategy is not uncommon in China's strictly controlled capital markets.Investors use overseas REIT funds to speculate on the property market, for example, even though the performance of these products is based on the commercial rental market.SUPPLIERS OF SUPPLIERSThe hunt for exposure to Apple has at times taken Chinese investors to the far periphery of Apple's supply chain or deep into the realm of rumor and speculation.Shares of Success Electronics
cheap adidas originals shoesLtd, which makes touch screens and has been cited by domestic media and analyst reports as an Apple supplier, nearly doubled in February on expectations of the imminent launch of the iPad 3.Nanjing Yunhai Special Metals Co, which domestic media and analysts have said provides raw materials to suppliers of iPad and iPhone components, surged 35 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010, following the launch of the iPhone 4 earlier in the year. Its shares have since fallen back, however, and the company barely made a profit in 2011.But analysts believe that Anjie, with its proven and direct relationship with Apple, can continue to perform well, even with its high valuations. The company last week forecast that first-half profit this year may grow as much as 70 percent, after surging 82 percent last year to 101 million yuan ($16 million)."You can hold on to Anjie as long as you have faith in Apple," said Wu Binhua, analyst at Hwabao Securities. "But too much reliance on one single customer is also a potential risk."Asset managers including China Asset management Co and Yinhua Fund Management Co boosted their holdings in Anjie during the first three months of this year, the company's first-quarter earnings report showed.

<p>Chinese painting While Netflix reported a first-quarter loss that was not as steep as Wall Street projected, it warned that domestic second-quarter streaming additions would fall below the level during the same period in 2010.
The stock plunged 17 percent to $84.85 in after-hours trading, down from a close at $101.84 on Nasdaq.
Despite predicting total U.S. streaming-subscriber additions in 2012 would reach about 7 million, "about the same as in 2010," the nearer-term guidance rattled investors, said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.
Adding customers to the instant-streaming business is crucial to the company's future as it moves away from mailing DVDs in its signature red envelopes. And sustaining strong growth in users will help offset rising costs as Netflix writes bigger checks for new movies and TV shows.
"They are giving a signal to the Street their growth story is over," said Pachter, who rates Netflix a "sell."
Netflix said seasonal variations would affect second-quarter customer growth. In a letter to shareholders, CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells said they saw "nothing new or particularly concerning" about customer viewing, acquisition and retention. "All are healthy," they said.
"Our gross additions are strong. Our retention is strong. We are feeling good about the year," Hastings said in an interview with Reuters.
Chinese brush painting LOST CREDIBILITY
Netflix never fully recovered credibility with investors after a tumultuous 2011, when a price-hike and plan to hive off its DVD business -- quickly abandoned -- sparked cancellations by angry customers.
It lost more than 800,000 U.S. subscribers in the third quarter, though it rebounded by gaining back 610,000 in the last three months of the year.
Once one of Wall Street's highest-flying stocks, its shares dropped from $304.79 in July to $62.37 in November.
"The brand recovery is partway complete" and will take about three years with most of it happening the first year, Hastings said during a conference call with analysts.
For the first quarter, Netflix posted revenue of $870 million, up 21 percent from a year earlier. The company had a net loss of $4.6 million or 8 cents per share in the quarter, versus a net profit of $60.2 million a year earlier.
Chinese calligraphy Analysts had expected a loss of 27 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
The company added 1.7 million U.S. streaming customers in the quarter for a total of 23.4 million. DVD subscribers fell by about 1.1 million to 10.1 million.
Some analysts have speculated Hastings will try to sell the DVD business. On the conference call, he said he was not considering the idea.
While it transitions to streaming and expands around the world, Netflix faces growing competition from rivals such as Amazon.com Inc and Comcast Corp's Streampix.
The company attributed its quarterly loss to start-up costs abroad. Netflix added 1.2 million customers in international markets during the second quarter, for a total of 3.1 million.
The company said it expected to return to profitability in the second quarter and launch in another European market in the fourth quarter of this year.
The move into another market may have added to concerns among investors, said Gabelli & Co analyst Brett Harriss.
scroll "It's very aggressive. I think investors are gun-shy from their last aggressive move" into foreign markets, said Harriss, who has a "hold" rating on Netflix.</p>

<p>craft stores A four-decade tidal wave of Mexican immigration to the United States has receded, causing a historic shift in migration patterns as more Mexicans now leave the United States for Mexico than the other way around, according to a report from the Pew Hispanic Center.
It is the first reversal in the trend since the Depression, and experts say that a declining Mexican birthrate and other factors may make it permanent.
“I think the massive boom in Mexican immigration is over and I don’t think it will ever return to the numbers we saw in the 1990s and 2000s,” said Douglas Massey, a professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton University and co-director of the Mexican Migration Project, which has been gathering data on the subject for 30 years.
Nearly 1.4 million Mexicans moved from the United States to Mexico between 2005 and 2010, double the number who came a decade earlier. The number of Mexicans who moved to the United States during that period fell to less than half of the 3 million who came between 1995 and 2000.
The trend could have major political consequences, underscoring the delicate dance by the Republican and Democratic parties as they struggle with immigration policies and court the increasingly important Latino vote.
Illegal immigration has emerged as one of the most emotional political issues in the country — one that dominated much of the Republican presidential contest and has proven complicated for President Obama.
wall hangings Mitt Romney has courted conservatives with aggressive anti-illegal immigration rhetoric. But the GOP presidential hopeful has said in recent days that he wants to build ties with Hispanics, many of whom have chafed at his statements, and the new immigration trends could offer him a chance to soften his stance.
Obama has been criticized by immigrant advocates for stepped-up deportation policies that analysts have said were partly responsible for the decreasing flow of Mexicans into the United States. The trend could offer the president a political silver lining: The chance to take credit for a policy success that, his aides have said in the past, should persuade Republicans to embrace a broad immigration overhaul plan.
The reversal appears to be a result of tightened border controls, a weak U.S. job and housing construction market, a rise in deportations and a decline in Mexican birthrates, said the study, which used U.S. and Mexican census figures and Mexican government surveys. Arrests of illegal immigrants trying to enter the United States have also dropped precipitously in recent years.
Whether the reversal is temporary or permanent, it could have significant implications for the United States. The country has 12 million Mexican immigrants, and many work in agriculture and construction.
Chinese calligraphy supplies One in 10 people born in Mexico live in the United States, and more than half entered illegally. Most live in California and Texas; about 120,000 live in the Washington region.
The report does not specify how many of those who moved to Mexico had been in the United States illegally. But the statistics imply that many of them had been: The number of undocumented Mexicans here dropped from 7 million in 2007 to 6.1 million in 2011, while the number of those here legally increased slightly, from 5.6 million in 2007 to 5.8 million in 2011.
“The diminished flow appears largely to be a drop in unauthorized immigrants,” said Jeffrey Passel, a senior demographer at Pew and a co-author of the report. He said an estimated 5 to 35 percent of the recent returnees to Mexico were deported.
Although most Mexican deportees say they will try to return, their numbers are shrinking, too, the study said: According to a Mexican government survey, 20 percent of deportees in 2010 said they would not return to the United States, compared with 7 percent in 2005.
Half of those returning to Mexico took their entire families, including more than 100,000 U.S.-born children of Mexican immigrants. Children born in the United States to Mexican nationals are citizens of both countries.
The drop comes at a time when overall immigration to the United States continues to grow, and reflects several factors specific to Mexico, including a relatively strong economy and a sharply diminished birthrate.
In 1960, a typical Mexican woman was expected to have more than seven children, but by 2009 that number had dropped to just over two — a decline that presages a sharp reduction in the number of young workers seeking to come to the United States.
arts and crafts homes As immigration reform continues to be a divisive political issue, experts on both sides of the debate disagreed over the implications of the report.
Those advocating for a path to legalization for immigrants here illegally said the plummeting of Mexican immigration should allow for thoughtful reform to take place without the pressure of trying to stem the flow across the border.
“It gives us the space to figure out how do we fix the legal immigration system so when the economy bounces back, how do we respond?” said Clarissa Martinez, director of immigration and civic engagement at the National Council of La Raza, a Latino advocacy organization.
Others warned that the trend could reverse itself if the U.S. economy improves or the Mexican economy falters. “The idea that this respite means the problem is over is just jumping the gun,” said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates for stricter immigration controls. “It’s wishful thinking by people who just want amnesty.”
But the era of entire villages moving from Mexico to the United States may be over, said Randy Capps, a senior policy analyst and demographer at the Migration Policy Institute.
Instead, he said, the current reversal may be similar to the reduced flow from Germany and Ireland a century ago. He predicted a negative feedback loop as fewer potential immigrants have connections to the United States.
“If this goes on for much longer, it’s going to take a lot to reverse it,” Capps said. “A lot of migration is based on networks — people who know people who know about the environment they’re going to be moving into. When the jobs disappear and the people you know aren’t there anymore, this channel of communication either dries up or it becomes so negative that it just changes everybody’s mind.”
craft stores Gustavo Velasquez, 38, who came from Oaxaca, Mexico, 12 years ago and serves as the director of the D.C. Office on Human Rights, said that the scarcity of U.S. jobs is causing more Mexicans to think twice about moving.
It is better to be unemployed in Mexico than to be unemployed in the United States, he said, because most migrant workers leave their families in Mexico. “They miss the warmth of being in a welcoming community,” he said, adding that with tougher border control and more deportations, Mexicans would rather be in a “precarious situation than in a situation of fear.” </p>

<p>Chinese painting Whatever really happened here in the neon bordellos, salsa clubs and king-size beds at the Hotel Caribe — between the male Secret Service officers and their new female friends — one thing is apparent: The agents were in the right place to get into trouble.
On Saturday night in front of the Tu Candela bar, where some of the U.S. agents reportedly cavorted, young women dressed in jeans and flats leapt from taxis, ran around the corner, changed clothes and emerged transformed: in tiny black dresses and high heels and ready to “party.”
Within minutes, they were stroking the liver spots of some aging Spaniard or working an eager German tourist. And away the couples went — for a few hours of drinking and dancing and then back to the hotels.
Nothing subtle about it.
Prostitution in Colombia is legal and widely accepted, a slightly embarrassing but very real part of the booming tourist trade here, as the nation sheds its international reputation for hyper-violent cocaine cartels (Pablo Escobar, rest in peace), and the tourists return to appreciate the beautiful beaches, great rum and colonial architecture of cities such as Cartagena, a World Heritage site.
Chinese calligraphy When the news broke that 11 Secret Service agents and officers were sent home for romping with hookers on the eve of President Obama’s trip to the Organization of American States summit, many Colombians were amused.
“It is normal, no? These are our beauty queens,” said Elgoyo Payares, owner of La Bodeguita del Medio, a Cuban-style restaurant-bar in the old city. “And a man, even a secret agent type, does not leave his private parts at home when he travels.”
But the lighthearted response shifted when it became clear that the Secret Service scandal was overwhelming the good news about a peaceful, prosperous Colombia.
“It is a shame, because we have so much to offer, not just girls,” said Angela Vazquez, who works at a car dealership in Bogota and was enjoying a mojito at one of the hemisphere’s best-known salsa joints, the Cafe Havana, where Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton danced at the close of the summit last week.
But, Vazquez sighed, maybe it was getting a little out of hand. Outside the Cafe Havana, street walkers were swarming around male tourists, hissing “Hola, papi!” and begging to join them for a drink.
Students and secretaries
“Our message is simple. Don’t come here to sleep with our girls, our children. They’re just teenagers. It’s disgusting,” said Blanca Castillo, who owns a jade jewelry store in the old city and volunteers for a group that pushes authorities to keep minors out of the sex trade.
Chinese brush painting Locals worry that many of the escorts — the euphemism of choice here — are amateurs, some of them college students, others moonlighting secretaries and shop clerks. A 2010 study by Edgar Alfonso Acuna of the University of San Buenaventura estimated that 2 percent of Cartagena college students were working as escorts, motivated by their desire to buy luxury goods and stylish clothes, and reporting monthly incomes of $2,000 to $3,000. Castillo said the scandal hurt Colombia’s reputation. “Aren’t there prostitutes in Washington, too?” she asked.
Sure there are. But there isn’t a shuttle bus service to them. In addition to the clubs where independent prostitutes hustle clients, there are Web sites offering to send a call girl to your hotel room “within 30 minutes, guaranteed.” And the city has dozens of bordellos
At Isis, a bordello two blocks from Tu Candela, two dozen young women in stylish clothes milled about the dark club, their faces aglow as they thumbed their BlackBerrys.
Jimena, dressed in a white sundress, was sucking on a lollypop. She said she was 19 and had only been in the city for a week. When she wasn’t at Isis, she said, she worked as a dance school instructor. She looked like Britney Spears during her cheerleader phase.
“I like old men,” she told a prospective client. Old men with beer guts? “Sure!” she said.
Payment in advance
scroll The latest phenomenon in Cartagena prostitution is the system called “prepago,” or pre-payment, and it is designed to avoid the very kind of early-morning fee dispute that investigators say occurred in the hallway of the Hotel Caribe on April 12, when a U.S. officer from a Secret Service advance team and the woman who spent the night with him argued, loudly, which eventually attracted hotel security and Colombian police and prompted a call to the U.S. Embassy.
Jimena said the prepago system was good business, for both client and service provider. To go to a room in the back of the Isis costs $100. To go to a hotel for the night would be $350, she explained, gratuities welcome.
The taxi drivers who work the clubs say any prostitutes who went with any of the American agents are hiding from the media and authorities. The alleged prostitute at the center of the case, who gave a single interview, to the New York Times, has left her home, her attorney said. Her picture was published in the New York Daily News from images taken from Facebook.
Chinese painting Clovis del Rio, a taxi driver stationed at the Hotel Caribe, said the pictures of the now-famous alleged prostitute are both good and bad. “Good that she is beautiful,” he said, “and bad for the American agent.”</p>

<p>craft stores The US and Afghanistan have reached a deal on a long-delayed strategic partnership agreement that assures the Afghan people their key American ally will not abandon the country militarily or financially for years after 2014, the deadline for most foreign forces to withdraw.
The agreement is key to the US exit strategy in Afghanistan because it provides guidelines for any American forces who remain after the withdrawal deadline and for financial help to the impoverished country and its security forces. For the Afghan government, it is a way to show its citizens that its key allies are not just walking away.
"Our goal is an enduring partnership with Afghanistan that strengthens Afghan sovereignty, stability and prosperity and that contributes to our shared goal of defeating al-Qaeda and its extremist affiliates," US embassy spokesman Gavin Sundwall said on Sunday. "We believe this agreement supports that goal."
After 10 years of US-led war, Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked insurgents remain a threat and as recently as a week ago, they launched a large-scale attack on the capital, Kabul, and three other cities.
Chinese calligraphy supplies The draft agreement was worked out and initialled by Afghan national security adviser Rangin Dadfar Spanta and US ambassador Ryan Crocker and must still be reviewed in both countries and signed afterward by the Afghan and American presidents.
US forces have already started pulling out of Afghanistan and the majority of combat troops are scheduled to depart by the end of 2014. But the US is expected to maintain a large presence in the country for years after, including special forces, military trainers and government assistance programs.
The agreement is both an achievement and a relief for both sides, coming after months of turmoil that seemed to put the entire alliance in peril. It shows that the two governments are still committed to working together and capable of coming to some sort of understanding.
"The document finalised today provides a strong foundation for the security of Afghanistan, the region and the world and is a document for the development of the region," Spanta said in a statement issued by President Hamid Karzai's office.
wall hangings Neither Afghan nor US officials would comment on the details of the agreement, but it is believed to pledge a partnership for 10 years beyond the 2014 withdrawal deadline.
Reaching any agreement is likely to be seen as a success given more than a year-and-a-half of negotiations during which the entire effort appeared in danger of falling apart multiple times.
Since the beginning of the year, US-Afghan relations have been strained by an internet video of US Marines urinating on the corpses of presumed Taliban fighters, by Quran burnings at a US base that sparked days of deadly protests and by the alleged killing spree by a US soldier in a southern Afghan village. Tensions were further heightened by a spate of turncoat attacks by Afghan security forces on their international counterparts.
arts and crafts homes White House National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said President Barack Obama expects to sign the document before a NATO summit in Chicago next month, meeting the deadline set by the two sides. Many had started to worry in recent weeks that Karzai and Obama would miss that goal as talked dragged on and Karzai continued to announce new demands for the document.</p>

<p>Chinese calligraphy Police and the FBI searched a Manhattan basement Thursday for the remains of a 6-year-old boy whose 1979 disappearance on his way to school helped launch a missing children's movement that put kids' faces on milk cartons.
Etan Patz vanished on May 25, 1979, after leaving his family's SoHo apartment for a short walk to catch a school bus. It was the first time his parents had let him go off to school alone.
A forensic team planned to dig up the concrete floor and remove drywall partitions to find blood, clothing or human remains in the building, just down the street from Etan's home, police spokesman Paul Browne said. The work is expected to take up to five days.
FBI and police officials didn't publicly announce what led them to the site, but a law enforcement official told The Associated Press that investigators made the decision to dig after an FBI dog detected the scent of human remains at the building over the past few weeks.
Investigators have long eyed the basement with curiosity because it can be accessed from the street on the boy's route to school. At the time, the space was being used as a workshop by a neighborhood handyman who was thought to have been friendly with Etan.
FBI investigators have interviewed the man several times over the years. Investigators questioned him again recently, and as a result of those discussions decided to refocus their attention on the building, according to the law enforcement official.
The official spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. Two other law enforcement officials also confirmed that an FBI dog had indicated the scent of human remains in the space.
Chinese painting Etan's disappearance drew national attention to child safety, ushered in a generation of parents who became afraid to send their kids out alone and helped fuel a movement to publicize missing children's cases. Etan's face was among the first to appear on milk cartons. President Ronald Reagan declared May 25, the day of his disappearance, National Missing Children's Day.
Etan's parents, Stanley and Julie Patz, became outspoken advocates for missing children. For years, they refused to change their phone number, in the hope that Etan was alive somewhere, and might call. They never moved, although they obtained a court order in 2001 declaring the boy dead.
Stanley Patz didn't respond to phone calls and email messages Thursday. A man who answered the buzzer at the family's apartment said they wouldn't be speaking to the media.
No one has ever been prosecuted for Etan's disappearance, but Stanley Patz sued an incarcerated drifter and admitted child-molester, Jose Ramos, who had been dating Etan's babysitter around the time he disappeared.
Chinese brush painting Ramos, who is not the carpenter whose workspace was being searched, denied killing the child, but in 2004 a Manhattan civil judge ruled him to be responsible for the death, largely due to his refusal to contest the case.
Ramos is scheduled to be released from prison in Pennsylvania in November, when he finishes serving most of a 20-year-sentence for abusing an 8-year-old boy. His pending freedom is one of the factors that has given new urgency to the case.
Investigators have looked at a long list of possible suspects over the years, and have excavated in other places before without success.
The 13-foot by 62-foot basement space being searched Thursday sits beneath several clothing boutiques. Investigators began by removing drywall partitions so they could get to brick walls that were exposed back in 1979 when the boy disappeared, Browne said.
Browne said the excavation is part of a review of the case, which was reopened by the Manhattan district attorney two years ago.
"This was a shocking case at the time and it hasn't been resolved," Browne said.
The law enforcement activity forced the temporary closure of some businesses on the block, including the fashion boutique Wink, on the ground floor of the excavated building.
scroll "It's insignificant," owner Stephen Werther said of the lost business. "It's retail. There's always another day for us to make a living. This may be the family's last chance to find out what happened to their son."</p>

<p>craft stores The White House expressed renewed confidence Thursday in the director of the Secret Service in the midst of a sordid prostitution scandal that has threatened to become a serious political distraction in an election year. A key lawmaker who oversees the Secret Service predicted more firings there soon.
President Barack Obama's chief spokesman, Jay Carney, noted that some Secret Service employees involved have already lost their jobs, just days into the government's formal investigation of the incident last weekend in Colombia, where Obama was to attend a summit meeting. Carney also said the president's security in Cartagena was never compromised, and he asked for patience as official investigations continue.
"Perhaps it would be in the interests of a complete and thorough and fair investigation not to make determinations about the conclusions of an investigation before they've even been reached," Carney said. "That's the president's position."
The scandal arose ahead of the Summit of the Americas when at least some of 11 Secret Service employees brought prostitutes back to their Cartagena hotel. The agency has moved quickly to try to quell the embarrassing episode, forcing out three employees so far, including two supervisors. The supervisors were in the agency's uniformed division; one is a sergeant, according to a person familiar with Secret Service operations who refused to be identified because he was not authorized to discuss the matter.
wall hangings Lawrence Berger, general counsel for the Federal Law Enforcement Officials Association, confirmed Thursday he is representing the supervisors, Greg Stokes and David Chaney, but said he could not discuss details of the investigation.
"I cannot comment because I have an obligation of confidentiality with my clients and I have to maintain that," Berger said.
A third employee has resigned. The employees under investigation include members of the agency's "jump teams," which are sent to sites to set up security in advance of the president's arrival. Others are on counter-assault and counter-sniper teams. The majority of the group is believed to be based in the Washington area.
Eight men remain suspended and have had their top-secret security clearances lifted. The scandal also involves about 10 military personnel and as many as 20 Colombian women.
Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican and chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, said Thursday that more firings could be imminent.
"I wouldn't be surprised if you saw more dismissals and more being forced out sooner rather than later," said King, who is being updated on the investigation by Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan. "You may see a few more today or tomorrow."
arts and crafts homes Sen. Chuck Grassley, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he thought more people would be fired within "just a few days."
"'I expect there will be more, but that's what the investigation is all about."
Three U.S. military officials have said the military personnel include five Army Green Berets, two Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal technicians, two Marine dog handlers and an Air Force airman. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way.
An Air Force colonel and a military lawyer have gone to Colombia as part of the military investigation. The Secret Service probe has included interviews with the employees and hotel staff.
King said investigators in Colombia have not been able to interview the women.
A 24-year-old prostitute told The New York Times this week that the scandal became public after she fought over payment with one of the Secret Service employees, and it spilled out into the hallway of the Hotel Caribe on April 12.
Jose Pena, a Cartagena taxi driver, told The Associated Press that he picked up the woman after the dispute. She said she left the hotel, where other members of the security detail and the White House press corps were staying, after she was paid $225.
In Cartagena this week, sex workers and hotel staff were reluctant to speak about the incident, which has become an election year embarrassment in the U.S.
Chinese calligraphy supplies Prostitution is legal in Colombia, and Cartagena thrives on the sex tourism industry, Mayor Campo Elias readily acknowledged, with hundreds of prostitutes available on any given night throughout the colonial walled city.
In Washington, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, who said she had not been briefed, called the incident "disgusting."
"There has to be an investigation to see how this could have happened, and those responsible should have to pay a price," Pelosi said. "But as with all these things, there are many people in the Secret Service who do their job responsibly, and we can't paint everyone with the same brush. But nonetheless, those people who were responsible have brought disgrace and it's disgusting."
Rep. Randy Forbes, a Virginia Republican, called for leadership changes at the Secret Service.
"I mentioned before, and I can't get a better analogy than baseball. You get three strikes," Forbes said. "They went over their budgets, they couldn't control their budget. They couldn't control who got in the White House. And now we're talking about just absolutely a fundamental principle of security planning — you don't let the prostitutes in."
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada suggested the problem lies with the judgment of those involved.
"Understand this, there is not a committee hearing that's going to take the place or stop people from being stupid. There is not a bill we can pass to cause people to have common sense," Reid said. "Think about this. People that are here to protect the president, they go to Colombia and have a fight with a prostitute over how much she should be paid. That's either very stupid or a total lack of common sense."
craft stores Another Republican lawmaker said Thursday that the Secret Service incident raised questions about whether Obama was capably leading the government.
"I don't sense that this president has shown that kind of managerial leadership," said Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama.
During his daily briefing, Carney shot back: "That sounds very much like a lawmaker attempting to politicize something that is not at all political."</p>

Buffett Cancer Diagnosis: The Real Question Facing Investors Now
nike outlet onlineNow she's accused of killing a young mother to take one by force.Investigators say McClain waited outside a pediatrician's office north of Houston and shot Kala Golden before taking her tiny newborn son, who was only 3 days old.Little Keegan Golden was found unharmed hours later with McClain's sister — who was told that her sister planned to adopt the boy. He is back with family members.McClain is charged with capital murder and was being held Wednesday without bond. Authorities say she admitted attacking the woman Tuesday and stealing her baby from his mother's pickup truck.McClain, 30, who listed a Houston address, was separated from her husband, with whom she had raised three children."I don't understand that, her taking a child," her estranged husband, Theo McClain of San Diego, told The Associated Press. "That doesn't make sense. We have three kids. And then to shoot somebody? I've never known her to hurt anybody."McClain had told her fiance she had given birth to their child. Instead, McClain had miscarried, said Capt.Bruce Zenor of the
discount jordan air max Montgomery County sheriff's office. Her fiancé, who was not identified Wednesday, is being interviewed by authorities.Sheriff Tommy Gage said 28-year-old Kala Golden had placed Keegan into her pickup truck Tuesday afternoon after leaving Northwoods Pediatric Center in Spring, about 20 miles north of Houston. The suspected shooter was parked next to her, Gage saidThe woman repeatedly shot Golden, then snatched the child from her truck and drove away, according to witness accounts. The dying woman leaned into the vehicle and tried to take the boy back, screaming, "My baby!" but her attacker sped off.Later Tuesday, two detectives spotted a vehicle outside a nearby apartment complex that matched witnesses' descriptions, Gage said. Though McClain's apartment was empty, she showed up and talked to authorities.During an interview, detectives learned of a residence in Harris County where McClain's sister lives and the child might be, Gage said.McClain's sister, Corina Jackson, told authorities that she had talked about needing to "do the adoption" soon after taking Keegan.McClain was later arrested.
cheap jordan lifestyle shoesPolice say she admitted carrying out the attack. They do not believe anyone else was involved.Investigators said McClain's statements included information only the shooter would know and indicated Tuesday's attack was part of a wider plan to kidnap any child. Golden was simply a convenient target, authorities said.McClain's children are with a family member in the county, authorities said. The kidnapped baby has been returned to his family, according to his father, Keith Schuchardt, who said he had been married to Kala Golden for three years.set. You won't hear that at his convention, but you'll hear that at ours."Romney's speech is part of a larger effort by his campaign to, as his aides describe it, "bracket" his candidacy against Obama. Tomorrow, Romney will travel to Ohio, where he will rebut remarks the president made about the economy in a speech there today—and campaign aides say he will make similar trips in the future to challenge Obama's re-election message. In his speech today, Romney seemed to acknowledge polls that show him trailing Obama when it comes to likability.
jordan fusion shoes cheapauthorities said, she went looking for another baby to present to him.He told the Houston Chronicle that he learned of the shooting because as Golden lay dying, she asked another woman to call him and explain the attack.Asked by reporters what he would tell his wife now, Schuchardt said, "I wish you were here with me to get me through this."Schuchardt, who also has a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, said officials were initially concerned about his criminal record, which includes felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance and burglary of a coin-operated machine.Gwen Carter, a spokeswoman for Texas' Department of Family and Protective Services, said Schuchardt could seehis children as often as he wanted while authorities worked on the case.McClain is a vocational nurse at a local staffing agency, a job that involves providing basic nursing services under the direction of registered nurses and doctors. She does not work at the pediatric center, according to a clinic receptionist, Jackie Longoria.McClain, who has vocational nursing licenses in both California and Texas, has not faced disciplinary action in either state, according to licensing boards.
nike basketball shoes clearanceGolden's mother, Linda Golden, told the AP that she had been baby-sitting when someone at the scene called her using her daughter's cellphone. She rushed to the clinic but was unable to see her daughter because paramedics were trying to save her."I wanted to kiss her before they put her in the ambulance," Linda Golden said.Linda Golden said she had no idea what could have sparked the slaying and abduction."That's the hardest she's ever fought," she said. "She died trying to save her baby."The International Monetary Fund said on Wednesday it had raised $320 billion so far in a bid to boost its firepower to deal with the euro zone debt crisis, with Poland and Switzerland joining the effort.IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said she had received commitments of $34 billion on Wednesday, including $8 billion from Poland and "a substantial amount" from Switzerland."Ensuring that the Fund has sufficient resources to tackle crises and to promote global economic stability is in the interests of all our members," she said in a statement.Lagarde is hoping to secure at least $400 billion in commitments from finance officials from around the globe, who meet this week in Washington under the auspices of the Group of 20 nations and the IMF and World Bank.
discount jordan pantoneThe issue has taken on new urgency given increased borrowing costs in Spain and Italy that have reignited fears the euro zone crisis could flare again, and that the fallout could imperil the global economic recovery. The United States has declined to provide fresh funds, saying it had done its part by ensuring dollar liquidity for banks in Europe, but it threw its weight behind the fundraising effort on Wednesday."We're actually very supportive of that process and we'll be very supportive of it this week," U.S. Treasury Timothy Geithner said, avoiding past rhetoric about Europe needing to do more first to erect its own financial firewall.Europe had already said it would provide about $200 billion to the IMF and Japan pledged $60 billion on Tuesday, becoming the first non-European nation to offer a commitment.Sweden said it would commit $10 billion and increase the amount to $14.7 billion later, while Denmark said it would give $7 billion. Norway pledged about $9.3 billion. The effort to expand the IMF's coffers is expected to dominate a meeting of G20 finance officials over dinner on Thursday and during the day on Friday. It will also be front and center at the IMF's semi-annual session on Saturday.
nike basketball shoes on saleSpeaking at the Brookings Institution, Geithner said the commitments that had already flowed in should make it apparent to financial markets that the fund can bulk up quickly when necessary, a prospect that could ease crisis-related jitters. He said it was a positive that the IMF could raise money quickly to "cushion if necessary the effects of European trauma" on the economies of other nations. While Europe has won some praise for actions it has taken to build up its own defenses to keep its debt troubles contained, the IMF warned this week that the crisis was still the single greatest threat to the world economy."Solving the issues in Europe is not about a firewall, it's about decisions that will be taken in Europe over a sustained period of time; and it's European actions that will be decisive here as opposed to outside money," Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney told a news conference. Verna McClain told her fiance she had given birth to their child. But after she suffered a miscarriage,

Airport stripper says he was 'nude but not lewd'
jordan retro shoesA high-tech worker who stripped naked at Portland International Airport as a protest against airport security screeners said Wednesday he was being "nude but not lewd," and characterized his act of defiance as protected political speech.John E. Brennan, 49, of Portland was charged with disorderly conduct and indecent exposure after taking off far more than this belt and shoes during the screening process before a Tuesday evening flight to San Jose, Calif. The incident report from the Port of Portland, which operates the airport, said some passengers covered their eyes and the eyes of their children. Others laughed and took photos. The disorderly conduct charge was dropped at Brennan's arraignment Wednesday.Brennan said in an interview that he did not arrive at the airport with the intention of getting naked. He said the Transportation Security Administration crosses the line between privacy and security. He decided to protest after he was pulled aside after going through the metal detector and a pat-down, he said.Port police officers arrested Brennan after he ignored requests to get dressed."The most effective way to tell them I'm not carrying a bomb is take off my clothes," Brennan said.
cheap adidas running shoes saleAuthorities led Brennan from the screening area with a towel around his waist. Brennan was transferred to a downtown Portland jail and released late Tuesday.Brennan has criticized TSA previously, saying on Twitter last May that airport security violated his privacy during a pat-down in San Jose. The tweet came after intense criticism in 2010 over the government's use of full-body scanning machines and invasive pat-downs in airport security.Annie Linstrom, a spokeswoman for the Port of Portland, said two screening lanes closed temporarily during the incident, but there were no flight delays. This was not the first time Brennan has undressed for political reasons. In Portland, the World Naked Bike Ride attracts thousands each year to protest oil dependence. Brennan said he has ridden in the event three times.Brennan booked a flight to San Jose for Wednesday night, and had no plans to protestThe trading world trembled after the bell yesterday with the disclosure that Berkshire Hathaway (BRK) Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett has stage 1 prostate cancer. Berkshire's A and B class shares immediately dropped after regular trading on the cancer headline. The shares recovered most of the drop after details revealed that the illness isn't life-threatening and that Buffett intends to conduct business as usual.
cheap adidas basketball sneakersPredictably, the news revived the constant debate on Berkshire Hathaway's succession plan and on precisely how much of a Buffett Premium is built into BRK shares. In the attached clip I discuss with my Yahoo! Finance colleague, Aaron Task of The Daily Ticker, why most of this conversation is misguided and what investors should be focused on.The real issue isn't whether or not Berkshire "needs" to disclose the identity of Buffett's successor. As Task notes, there isn't necessarily going to be a single go-to replacement for Buffett—there are hints that Buffett's role will be divided amongst several people. The logic of such a split would be not just that Buffett is irreplaceable but that Berkshire is a diversified company.Buffett disclosed a form of cancer generally thought not to be life-threatening in a timely, honest manner. Most investors can only dream of such responsibility to shareholders. What scared the market, and what Buffett will bring to the table for as long as he lives, was the possibility of the loss of his personal brand. Buffett is to investing what Michael Jordan is to shoes: the name alone brings immeasurable value.
adidas originals saleThe reason the stock dropped on the news is best illustrated by 3 deals Buffett has made since 2008, none of which would have been available to any other investor on earth. During the depths of the financial crisis, Buffett put $5 billion and $3 billion into Goldman Sachs (GS) and General Electric (GE), respectively. Both investments were hailed, at the time, as "votes on America" and amounted to endorsement deals.Buffett's investment in Goldman gave Berkshire a potential 10% stake in Goldman via "perpetually preferred" shares and paid a 10% yield. In the first quarter of last year Goldman bought back the shares, giving Berkshire a $1.7 billion net profit on a 2.5 year investment. The GE deal pays Buffett $300 million a year, also 10%. Similarly, an investment in Breakout sponsor Bank of America (BAC) pays BRK $300 million and gives it a 10-year warrant with rights to purchase BAC shares.
cheap adidas originals shoesThese were good deals for the companies in question. They were a great deal for Berkshire Hathaway, as no one but Buffett would have carried clout sufficient enough to make said vote of confidence worth a dime. No other investor would have been able to get similar terms from any of the companies in question. That's $600 million a year in dividends and $1.7 billion in gains that have been racked up since the fall of 2008, due entirely to the reputation of Warren Buffett. Those numbers don't include scores of other deals available to Berkshire solely because of Buffett's value-adding brand. No succession plan in the world will be able to overcome the loss of the Buffett brand. Placing a value on the Buffett premium starts with trying to calculate the loss of future earnings for Berkshire Hathaway. The company currently trades at a roughly 20% premium to its book value of roughly $170 billion.Investors in BRK should assume the Buffett premium at somewhere between zero and well over $40 billion and realize there isn't a single thing Berkshire Hathaway will be able to do to offset his loss, either now or after the fact. Mitt Romney said President Barack Obama is "in over his head and swimming in the wrong direction" when it comes to the nation's economy and that his policies are "putting in peril" America's future.
jordan pantoneSpeaking in Charlotte, N.C., just blocks from where Obama is set to accept his party's nomination this summer at the Democratic National Convention, Romney delivered what his campaign described as a"prebuttal" to Obama's nomination speech, focusing on "what you won't hear" this September.Romney accused the president of not doing enough to encourage job creation and for running up the nation's debts. And he lambasted Obama for not delivering on the promises he made in his 2008 convention speech, vowing to remind voters of the president's "failures" when it comes to issues like unemployment. It is very clear his agenda has not accomplished what he said it would," Romney declared, standing behind a podium featuring a sign that read, "Obama Isn't Working." He went on: "Those are things you won't hear in President Obama's speech ... but because he won't [talk about them], I will. ... I am going to make sure America hears those things loud and clear."He accused Obama of blaming others when it comes to the struggling economy, and said he can't continue to "deflect blame elsewhere.""At some point, he has to acknowledge this is his economy," Romney said. "He has failed by the measures he

<p>Chinese calligraphy You can make the argument -- without apology or hesitation -- that Pat Summitt is the greatest college basketball coach of our time. At the very least, she's in the starting five.
And it's not because she won more games than any other Division I coach from A (Geno Auriemma) to K (Mike Krzyzewski) to W (John Wooden). Or that she has the same number of national championships as Krzyzewski and Adolph Rupp combined. Or that in the 31 years there's been an NCAA women's basketball tournament, her team has been in it every year -- and won eight times.
Greatness isn't measured simply by victories. It is measured by the depth and width of a coach's impact on the sport itself, on the players, on the university they represent. Find me another basketball coach who transformed and legitimized her sport more than Summitt. Find me another basketball coach whose legacy exceeds hers. I can wait.
After 38 seasons as Tennessee's women's head coach, Summitt relinquished her duties Wednesday to longtime assistant and former UT player Holly Warlick. She had little choice; the effects of early-onset dementia-Alzheimer's type had begun to leave footprints on her ability to run the program on a day-to-day basis.
Chinese brush painting Alzheimer's is such a cruel and selfish disease. It steals your memory. It steals away the likes of Summitt, who has spent more time on basketball courts than varnish.
Late Wednesday afternoon, I talked with associate athletic director Debby Jennings, who has spent the past 35 years in the UT athletic department. As an undergrad, Jennings had taken tennis and basketball classes taught by Summitt at Tennessee. Few at UT have known Summitt longer.
I asked Jennings to quantify Summitt's impact on women's college basketball. I should have known better. Asking that question is like asking someone to come up with a mathematical formula for love.
But Jennings tried, explaining how Summitt helped make women's basketball credible, how she pushed for more TV exposure for the game, how she helped create a brand not only for UT women's hoops, but for the sport.
"Whatever was good for the game, she did," said Jennings. "She spoke to every booster club, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club ... Pat Summitt probably consumed more chicken in her life at those lunches and dinners than -- "
And then Jennings had to stop and compose herself.
"I'm sorry," she said. "It's been a long day."
Chinese painting Did Summitt make a difference? Let's see, President Obama filled out an NCAA women's tournament bracket. There are women's games galore on TV. During some years, Summitt's teams challenged the UT men's teams in attendance and exceeded them in national exposure.
Summitt, 59, is as much a part of Tennessee as The Hill, the Spam Can, the painted rock near frat row, or Rocky Top itself. So respected is Summitt that incoming football and men's basketball coaches routinely sought her support and advice.
It also wasn't uncommon for recruits from other sports to request an audience with Summitt. The story goes that one of the last people Peyton Manning spoke with before committing to a school was Summitt. He chose UT.
Her story is like no other. She came to Tennessee in 1974 as a graduate assistant to work on her master's degree, teach a pair of lower-level physical education classes and, most of all, rehab her injured knee in time for the 1976 Olympics.
For this, college basketball can thank Bettye Giles.
Giles was the women's athletic director at UT-Martin, which is where Summitt played college basketball. It was Giles, a UT-Knoxville grad and Summitt's college adviser, who helped arrange the grad assistant position.
scroll Not long after Summitt's arrival in Knoxville, the women's basketball head coach decided to take a sabbatical to pursue a doctorate degree. Summitt was offered the job.
"The main thing I can remember is that during that very first month, I would tell her, 'Sure, you can do it, Pat. You know you can do it. You just need to settle down,'" said Giles, by phone from her home in Martin. "I gave her a number of pep talks."
And now, 38 years, 1,098 wins and 161 players later, Summitt is stepping away from the only job she has ever known.
"I think I wanted to cry," said Giles. "I kind of feel lost. Pat put a face to women's basketball in this country. Pat Summitt was the face of UT. And now they're going to miss her."
We all are. We're going to miss The Stare, Summitt's signature stink eye that could reduce players to small puddles of sweat. We're going to miss The Rivalry: Summitt versus UConn's Geno Auriemma. We're going to miss it all.
"She's such a fine person and I'm so proud of her, what she's done with this Alzheimer's situation," said Giles. "There might be something bigger than basketball for Pat Summitt."
Chinese calligraphy In a bittersweet irony, Wednesday marks the day Pat Summitt quit coaching, but also the day Marquette University announced the hiring of a 21-year-old assistant for its women's basketball team.</p>

<p>craft stores Mitt Romney got another expected but key endorsement from Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels on Wednesday before heading to North Carolina to criticize President Barack Obama in the North Carolina city where Democrats will nominate Obama later this year for a second term.
Meanwhile, at appearances in Michigan and Ohio, Obama made some references that could easily be construed as jabs at his presumed Republican opponent's privileged upbringing and his position on the auto industry bailout.
Romney, speaking near the outdoor stadium in Charlotte where Obama will deliver his speech accepting the Democratic nomination in September, listed what he called failed administration policies that he said would not get mentioned by the president.
"He has failed by the measurements he set," said Romney. "You won't hear that at this convention, but you're going to hear it at ours, I'll tell you that."
In an apparent reference to polls that showed Obama was considered more likable, Romney cracked: "Even if you like Barack Obama, we can't afford Barack Obama."
wall hangings Earlier, Romney echoed some of the less serious criticisms of Obama launched by the political right, complaining that the president plays golf too often.
"I scratch my head at the capacity of the president to take four hours off on such a regular basis to go golfing," Romney said in an interview on WLW radio in Ohio. "I remember how the Democrats used to be so critical of George W. Bush for playing occasional golf. He doesn't begin to play the kind of golf that Barack Obama has, but we don't hear much about that from the mainstream media."
Romney, who said on WTVN radio in Ohio that he intends to spend a day or two at the London Olympics this summer, still needs several hundred delegates to clinch the Republican nomination but his path cleared last week when conservative challenger Rick Santorum dropped out.
Obama's campaign has long considered Romney the likely opponent in November, and the president has started making references, both obvious and oblique, to the multimillionaire former Massachusetts governor in his speeches.
Talking about job training at a community college in Ohio, Obama criticized a House Republican budget plan embraced by Romney that would cut funding for programs to help young people go to college.
"Somebody gave me an education," Obama said in reference to his and the first lady's middle-class background. "I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Michelle wasn't. But somebody gave us a chance."
Chinese calligraphy supplies An Obama campaign aide downplayed any potential reference to Romney, noting that the president has used the expression in the past.
In Dearborn, Michigan, the president defended his 2009 authorization of the massive auto bailout while indirectly smacking Romney for opposing the plan.
Standing on the same stage at the Henry Ford Museum where Romney announced his first bid for president in 2008, Obama told a crowd of some 600 enthusiastic supporters: "Change is the decision we made to rescue the American auto industry from collapse when some politicians said, 'Let Detroit go bankrupt.' "
Romney, who was born in Michigan and whose father was a former auto executive and governor of the state, opposed the bailout, saying a structured bankruptcy could have achieved the same result without the massive cost to the U.S. government. Moreover, he has argued the Obama administration made too many concessions to auto unions as part of the bailout.
The election campaign is intensifying now that it is essentially a two-man race. Romney has been rolling out endorsements this week in the aftermath of Santorum's departure from the Republican campaign.
Daniels, at one time considered a possible GOP contender, explained Wednesday on Fox News why he is backing Romney.
"He's already won our nomination. He earned it," the Indiana governor said. "He's proven himself the best nominee we can put forward, and I'm just happy to sign on and help."
arts and crafts homes In his own statement, Romney said Daniels shares his background in business and has "used the principles of the private sector in government."
"Indiana has been served well by his leadership based on fiscal discipline, smaller government, and a friendly environment for job creators," Romney said. "I am honored to have his support."
The Daniels endorsement followed similar public support for Romney on Tuesday from the top two Republicans in Congress as well as Republican governors from Pennsylvania and Wyoming, showing the party's intention to rally around their certain nominee and shift the focus of the campaign from the GOP primary race to November's election.
After his Ohio address, Obama planned to return to the fundraising circuit Wednesday with events in Michigan, where Romney was born.
One of the two planned events will be at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, the Obama campaign said. The Ford Museum was where Romney announced his first bid for president in 2008.
Wednesday's fundraisers come on the heels of the Obama campaign's announcement that it gathered $53 million last month, $8 million more than it took in during February.
craft stores A new poll Tuesday showed voters are willing to give Romney a fresh look now that he is the certain Republican nominee.
The CNN/ORC International poll showed that Romney's popularity is starting to rebound now that the divisiveness of the Republican primaries appears to be all but over.
According to the survey, 44% of people questioned said they have a favorable view of Romney, up 10 points from February, while 43% said they have an unfavorable opinion, down 11 points, and 13% were unsure.
The survey said 53% of Americans plan to give Romney a second look when the primaries are officially over, with 45% saying they already know enough about Romney to decide whether he would be a good president.
It also indicated that Romney's popularity still lags well behind Obama's: 56% have a favorable view of the president, with 42% saying they see Obama in a negative light.
"The Republican Party's favorable rating has also rebounded now that the nomination fight is all but over, from 35% in March to 41%," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "That still puts the GOP several points behind the Democratic party's 46% rating, but it is an indication that the wounds have started to heal from the primary season."
wall hangings Both House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Tuesday they back Romney's nomination. The statements a few hours apart were intended to show growing Republican support for Romney despite mistrust among some conservatives over his moderate policies when he was Massachusetts governor.
"I will be proud to support Mitt Romney and do everything I can to help him win," Boehner told reporters after he met with House Republicans to discuss the November election.
McConnell later told reporters he also is backing Romney, which is no surprise but represents a formal endorsement after the Kentucky senator previously said Romney would be the party's nominee and "an excellent candidate."</p>

Billionaire Warren Buffett said Tuesday he has been diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, Ink Lotus painting but he tried to reassure his company's shareholders that the condition is "not remotely life-threatening."
The 81-year-old chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. said in a letter to shareholders that the two-month radiation treatment he and his doctors plan to start in mid-July will restrict his travel but shouldn't otherwise affect his routine.
"I feel great -- as if I were in my normal excellent health," Buffett said. "And my energy level is 100 percent. I discovered the cancer because my PSA level (an indicator my doctors had regularly checked for many years) recently jumped beyond its normal elevation and a biopsy seemed warranted."
Buffett said he was diagnosed April 11 and has received tests including a CAT scan, a bone scan and an MRI. He said the tests showed no indication of cancer elsewhere in his body.
Cancer experts say Buffett's diagnosis shouldn't be a major concern because it appears his doctors caught the disease early. Still, the news will remind Berkshire investors of Buffett's mortality.
"The chance of dying of prostate cancer for Mr. Buffett in the next 10 years is probably 2 or 3 percent, so the prognosis is great," said Dr. Ralph deVere White, director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Davis. Winter Plum Blossom paintingBuffett is known for a no-nonsense approach to investing. He is one of the world's richest men and, in recent years, has become one of its most generous philanthropists.
Buffett's stake in Berkshire Hathaway was worth $44.6 billion as of Tuesday's closing prices before the announcement.
Jeff Matthews, the author of "Secrets in Plain Sight: Business and Investing Secrets of Warren Buffett" and a Berkshire shareholder, said he isn't panicking, and he doesn't think most other shareholders will either.
"I think 99.9 percent of Berkshire's investors will read the press release and take Buffett's statement at face value," Matthews said. "I actually think this doesn't change the picture much at all."
Matthews said anyone who panics and sells Berkshire stock because of this news probably doesn't know the conglomerate and the hands-off way Buffett lets the company's more than 80 subsidiaries operate.
Plus, Buffett and Berkshire's board have a succession plan. Berkshire plans to split Buffett's job into three parts -- CEO, chairman and several investment managers -- when the company does need to replace him.
Buffett told shareholders in February that Berkshire's board has chosen someone to succeed him as CEO -- someday -- and he said there are two backup candidates.
None of the three has been publicly identified.
Buffett has said Berkshire hasn't even told the successor and backups who they are. But he has said his son Howard, Red Peach Blossoms Fan Arta member of Berkshire's board, would make an ideal chairman. And Berkshire has hired two hedge fund managers -- Todd Combs and Ted Weschler -- over the past two years who Buffett says are capable of eventually running the company's entire portfolio.
The AFL-CIO, which owns some Berkshire stock, has submitted a shareholder proposal that's up for a vote at Berkshire's annual meeting in May asking whether the company should be compelled to disclose more specifics about its succession plan. More than 30,000 people typically attend the meeting to hear Buffett and Vice Chairman Charlie Munger answer questions from analysts, reporters and shareholders.
Berkshire's insurance, railroad and utility businesses typically account for more than half of its net income. It also owns clothing, furniture, brick and jewelry firms and has major investments in such companies as American Express Co., International Business Machines Corp., Washington Post Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.
Although Buffett's investment success has made his a household name -- and made him a Wall Street oracle -- he still works in his hometown of Omaha and lives in a house he bought in 1958.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men -- more than 241,000 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year. More than 90 percent are early-stage -- like Buffett's -- and nearly all men with such diagnoses survive at least five years.
Buffett's case is likely to renew controversy over PSA blood tests. Prowling Crane painting A leading government task force warns against them for men old than 75 because prostate cancer usually grows so slowly in older men that it rarely proves fatal. That means many men are treated and suffer side effects unnecessarily. The American Cancer Society says only men in good health with a life expectancy of at least 10 years should consider a PSA test.
"Mr. Buffett made a decision to get it, but that may not be the right decision for every man in that age group," said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the cancer society's deputy chief medical officer.
Likewise for treating the disease. Any man at that age should have "a careful conversation with his physician about the pros and cons of treatment," let alone which type is best, Lichtenfeld said. "We're becoming increasingly aware that not every man needs to be treated."
Buffett has chosen radiation treatment -- five days a week for six weeks. During radiation treatment, people feel tired and have some risk of urinary and bowel problems but usually can work and live normally, said Dr. Sean Collins, a radiation oncologist at Georgetown's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
"It's kind of like kindergarten -- the hardest part is showing up," he said.
Many prostate cancer patients die of something else before the cancer kills them. Buffett concluded his letter with a nod to that fact.
"I will let shareholders know immediately should my health situation change," he wrote. "Eventually, of course, it will; but I believe that day is a long way off." Cranes painting Berkshire's class B shares rose $1.09 Tuesday to close at $80.76. They fell 95 cents after hours following the announcement of Buffett's diagnosis.</p>
