Ham Radio Operator Proves Worthy in Test During Historic Flood:

eHam.net News - C. Earl Todd is prepared for an emergency. As an amateur or "ham" radio operator, Todd said he understands the importance of using ham radio for emergency communication, so he tested his skills during the recent flooding when he participated in the annual Georgia simulated emergency test. As the West Georgia Emergency Coordinator, Todd was in charge of the West Georgia Ares, a group of emergency radio operators in Carroll, Heard and Haralson counties. Tim Padgett, director of the Carroll County Emergency Management Agency, stressed the importance of maintaining communication during an emergency situation. "The number-one thing in an emergency is communication," Padgett said. "These are the guys who can basically take a wire and talk through it as part of a radio. If you look at historical events, when lines of communication have been down, Ham radio always comes up as one of the first alternate options." During the test, the Amateur Radio Emergency Service issued a power outage scenario where Regional Emergency Coordinators like Todd had to use radio communication in the instance of a statewide power outage. "In times of an emergency, we would be there to help provide communication services for emergency personnel," Todd said. The drill started Oct. 4 and was scheduled to last for 48 hours, so Todd decided that since Carroll County was in an actual state of emergency, he would set up his radio next to the Federal Emergency Management Association's temporary headquarters at 590 Hay's Mill Road. "The intent was to do whatever was required to indicate that we could communicate without power," Todd said. "We accepted messages from five different people and sent them over the radio."

eHam.net News - IRON MOUNTAIN - The Mich-A-Con Amateur Radio Club will hold a special Veterans Day this week at Pine Mountain, announced Tom Martin, president of the club. The station will be in operation Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 10-12, at the Upper Peninsula Veterans Memorial on Pine Mountain. This is the third year the club has held a Veterans Day event. "Last year's event was well received by amateur radio operators (hams) all over the world," said Martin. "We had more people than ever," he said. Thousands of contacts were made all over the world, including Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Many veterans contacted the station via amateur radio and also made personal visits to the site, he said. Ham radio operators hold events regularly to test their systems. Ham radio operators can provide emergency communications support when conventional systems are disrupted by natural disasters, or national emergencies. An estimated six million people throughout the world are regularly involved with amateur radio.

Dundee Amateur Radio Club members met with Yoshihiro Sugimoto, who works for the Bank of Japan and is one of the country's leading radio amateurs. He has operated radio stations in many parts of the world, including Australia, the US and Mauritius. As this was his first visit to Scotland, he wanted to meet some local amateurs. He got in touch with the group over the airwaves a few weeks ago, asking if he could come along to the club during his trip. A club spokesman said, "The timing of his visit made this difficult, but the club were determined he would not come all this way and not meet fellow amateurs, as it's not every day someone from Japan asks to meet up.

HamSphere Simulates Real Radio:

eHam.net News - Amateur radio and the personal computer have had a happy marriage since the days of 386 processors and 9,600 baud modems. A computer in the radio shack and a decent Internet connection are very empowering, whether they be brought to bear in digital mode operation or in call sign lookups and logging programs like Logbook of the World. Seizing on the natural fit of ham radio and Internet-connected computers, Kelly Lindman (5B4AIT) of the island nation of Cyprus takes the relationship to a whole new level with the free program HamSphere. HamSphere sells itself as "a fully implemented ham radio transceiver software that communicates via a virtual ionosphere simulation based on the natural laws of radio propagation." In short, HamSphere is feature-rich simulated radio, and is still only available to registered amateur radio license holders. Front-ended by a virtual transceiver that lives in your PC after loading the program. HamSphere does provide an artificial environment that very accurately simulates real-world HF radio communications between real operators.

ARRL - As of November 6, radio amateurs in Norway were granted privileges on three new bands, as well as primary status on the extended 40 meter band and a frequency extension on 12 meters. According to IARU Vice President Ole Garpestad, LA2RR, Norwegian amateurs received new secondary user privileges on 60 meters (5.260-5.410 MHz), the 600 meter band (493-510 kHz) and in five blocks in the 4 meter (70 MHz) band. Amateur Radio operators in Norway will also enjoy upgraded privileges on 40 meters, moving from secondary to primary users between 7.100-7.200 MHz and 1000 W output. They have also received a new secondary allocation from 24.740-24.890 MHz in the 12 meter band, expanding upon Norway’s existing primary allocation of 24.890-24.990 MHz. Garpestad said that “minor adjustments” were also made in the SHF (3-30 GHz) and EHF (30-300 GHz) portions of the band. “Congratulations to our Norwegian colleagues,” said ARRL Chief Executive Officer David Sumner, K1ZZ. “The new domestic allocations in Norway are consistent with the present and future spectrum requirements for the Amateur Service as determined by the IARU Administrative Council. We hope that other administrations will consider taking similar steps.”

eHam.net News - Ray Grob demonstrates the transmission of messages using Morse code and shortwave radio at his home in Fremont. Grob was first licensed by the Federal Communications Commission 65 years ago when he was 14. He served as a Navy radioman during the early 1950s. Over the years, he has communicated by ham radio with residents of all 50 states and countries in every corner of the world. Amateur radio operators are often able to support their communities during emergencies. The Sandusky Valley Amateur Radio Club, of Fremont, was organized in 1952 and meets every month in the basement of the county jail. About 10 members of the group meet for breakfast at Denny's every month. Grob often meets with sixth-graders at Hayes Elementary School to share his experiences.

eHam.net News - Most people scream to lift their voices higher than the din of 90,000-plus people gathered at a University of Georgia football game. But some men and women show up just to talk. thought about what happens if someone passes out, falls down the stairs or (hurts themselves at a game)," Kay McMann said. They arrive two hours early, scatter to Red Cross stations throughout Sanford Stadium, wear ear pieces, carry radios and monitor frequencies - as well as people. Don't expect to hear them, though. Unless something is wrong. "Until I did this, I never thought about what happens if someone passes out, falls down the stairs or (hurts themselves at a game)," Kay McMann said.
McMann is an amateur radio hobbyist and volunteer communicator at Georgia home games. Often, she works as the "net coordinator," receiving and delivering messages from the dozen or so radio operators who join her throughout the season. Most work in tandem with Red Cross volunteers who staff emergency stations scattered throughout the stadium. The operators talk in a calm way, relating to McMann first-aid locations and calls for more help, if need be. Situations can vary from routine sickness, injury and supply requests to a critical need for emergency personnel.
