Hey guys,
I’ve to apologise for my recent inactivity for the last 1 or 2 weeks. I’m facing a multitude of problems – website wise (several downtimes, overloads) and personal. Right now I’m at the Stuttgart airport and have just returned from Split. Two of my family members where heavily injured in the train accident near Kastela. They are better now but will have to stay in KBC Split for several more days or even weeks. I have to manage some private stuff in in Germany and will return to Croatia in four days.

Hope you understand that Dinamos drop out of the Champions League qualifier doesn’t bother much in these times but I’m sure to provide you with the latest updates again soon.

See you guys around,

Oliver

Croatian striker Nikola Kalinić says he is looking forward to joining Portsmouth. The Hajduk Split striker looks set to complete a move to the South Coast following the sale of Peter Crouch to Tottenham.

Sky is reporting that Kalinić, valued at £6 million, is being lined up and he has revealed his excitement about his proposed switch which will see him link up with fellow countryman Niko Kranjčar.

“My dream has come true. It is not yet finalised but, God willing, everything will be okay,” he is quoted by The Sun. “Portsmouth is a big club and the Premier League is the best in the world. Playing in Portsmouth would be a great challenge for me, an opportunity to prove myself and justify the faith shown in me, particularly by people like Paul Hart.”

Hajduk confirmed that a deal was in place with Portsmouth. “I am pleased with how the negotiations have gone, everything is now agreed,” Hajduk president Mate Peros confirmed. Kalinić’s agent Tomislav Erceg confirmed the player was on his way to England. “We are more or less agreed with Portsmouth, and now we are just awaiting confirmation,” he stated.

Croatian master marksman Eduardo celebrated his first pre-season appearance of the 2009/10 campaign with a classy brace as Arsenal brushed aside Szombathelyi Haladas 5-0 in Hungary on Monday night. A few days earlier, it had been rumoured that the Croatian striker was injured and would miss the first two months of the season. However he seemed extremely fit and well this evening, firing home a low shot in the 24th minute and a free-kick five minutes before the break.

With the departure of Adebayor to ManCity Eduardo is set as a starting XI member, a video of the two goals is available here.

Premier League club FC Portsmouth are ready to sign Hajduk hot-shot Nikola Kalinić in a € 7,5m deal – to fill Peter Crouch’s giant boots. According to British media the goalscorer is due to fly in for a medical over the weekend after Pompey officials thrashed out a fee for him in Split yesterday.

Kalinić could team up with Niko Kranjčar at Pompey – FC Porto, Real Zaragoza, Bologna and Valencia have all been linked with the 21-year-old who has been involved in a series of petulant incidents. However, he is in demand after scoring 15 goals last season for his club.

Kalinić has been described as the future of Croatian football after representing his country at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level. He was included in Slaven Bilić’s Euro 2008 squad last summer and made an appearance from the substitute’s bench in the 1-0 victory against Poland.

HNSLatest will have an Off/On the ball article featuring the backgroud and career progression of Kalinić in the next days, make sure to keep checking back!

Jake Livermore celebrated his new contract at London based club Tottenham Hotspur with a goal to remember as we drew our Wembley Cup opener against Barcelona on Friday night. The young midfielder, just 19, put pen to paper on a new deal this week – announced only earlier on Friday – and made it a night he’ll never forget by heading home the equaliser against the European champions just two minutes after entering the fray as a substitute.

Tottenham were staring a rare friendly defeat in the face when Robbie Keane took a quick corner to Benoit Assou-Ekotto, the left-back whipped in a fine cross and Livermore threw himself full length to beat keeper Jose Maria Pinto to the ball in the air and plant his header into the corner. Both teams were without first team regulars – Spurs lost centre-backs Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson to injury, while there was no Messi, Eto’o, Iniesta, Xavi, Henry or Puyol for Barca, although both Messi and Henry were at the stadium.

It meant Vedran Ćorluka and Tom Huddlestone lined-up in central defence as Harry Redknapp went for a 4-5-1 formation in the first half, Jermain Defoe the lone striker. Ya Ya Toure, Eric Abidal, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Bojan Krkić were the familiar faces in the Barca side.

Chances were far and few between in that opening period. Krkić showed clever awareness in attempting to lob Carlo Cudicini before Pedro Rodriguez burst through two challenges and fired low to the near post, Cudicini this time producing a fine save to his left in the 20th minute. Barca’s goal arrived 12 minutes later and owed a lot to Toure’s burst from midfield as he somehow evaded tackles from Wilson Palacios and Ćorluka before his progress was halted emphatically by Huddlestone’s fine tackle. No luck though – the ball ran straight into Krkić’s path and he drilled low past Cudicini.

The Spurs biggest problem in the first half was hanging onto the ball and when we gave it away, Barcelona weren’t surrendering it in a hurry, one of the world masters of maintaining possession.

However Tottenham came closest with two efforts in the space of seconds towards the end of the half.
Palacios broke forward in the 39th minute and released Modrić to his left, the Croatian hammered towards goal and his effort cannoned back off the crossbar but play continued, Aaron Lennon crossed deep and Assou-Ekotto’s volley into the ground was tipped over by Albert Jorquera.
Kyle Naughton – his first team debut – Pascal Chimbonda and Heurelho Gomes joined Keane in the action in the second half as we switched to a 4-4-2 formation, Chimbonda to centre-half, Huddlestone in midfield.

Still chances were at a premium. Huddlestone’s rocket hit Keita and deflected just wide and then Albert Dalmau looked to have handled Modrić’s corner, appeals waved away. Pinto made a brave save at the feet of Modrić as Spurs started to gain a territorial advantage but the threat was always there at the other end, Gomes forced to save from Jeffren Suarez before Ruben Rochina looped a header over.

Celtic are next up for us on Sunday (4pm) – the Scottish giants hammered Egyptians Al Alhy 5-0 in the first game.

Bayern coach Louis van Gaal is currently occupied with selecting a first-choice line-up. In Köln (friendly), and in the following day’s fund-raiser against the McFit-Allstars in Gelsenkirchen, he will again be without a clutch of key players. Franck Ribéry, Luca Toni, Ivica Olić and Thomas Kraft did not travel to the Rhineland on Thursday, setting off for home in Munich instead.

Olić suffered mild pain in his knee on Thursday and will be rested at the weekend as a precaution. According to German media Olić was tackled during a 6v6 training match by a team mate, however he said to be fit against the FIFA World Cup 2010 qualifier against Belarus in Minks on August, 12th.
