So a 20 ounce Sprite will now cost $1.89 as opposed to $1.69 at my local 711. The revenues from the tax will be put toward a program to serve more fresh fruit and vegetables in school lunches in DC public schools. I think this tax is a good idea. Not only is a childhood obesity a enormous problem in this country, school lunches and soda, are two of the largest contributing factors. This plan will lessen one and increase the other. It's not only for kids, I drink way too much soda as it is. If this doesn't get me to cut down I will suffer the consequences, less money, but feel better that it is working to improve health and society.<div><br /></div><div>The food and beverage industry strongly disagree. This would hurt soft drink sales in the district. I was about to say "drastically" but I learned never underestimate America's addiction to unhealthy food and drinks. So lets just go with "hurt sales." It is held in Union Station, is black-tie, and for students, families and friends. In 2008 there were 2,000 people there, this year only 900. Why? Tickets are $45 for students and $55 for guests and there is a cash bar! With attendance going down like this, why does GW continue to charge so much?<div><br /></div><div>I think its an excellent idea to have a big party everyone can go to, to meet each others friends and families. My parents asked to meet everyone. However, GW gives you 6 tickets to graduation so they expect you to have that many people in town. One student = $45. Plus 6 x $55 = $330. Grand total = $375 for an event with a cash bar on graduation weekend. Also, since students will want to go out without parents afterwards most likely, spending almost 400 bucks on a cocktail hour seems unimaginable. </div><div><br /></div><div>In the midst of a recession, I don't think it was right for GW to charge to so much. Give people a place to go and dress up but foot the bill! GW students pay for every single thing they do and they pay a lot. It is not out of line for GW to make its "Monumental Celebration" something a little more affordable. I did not go because of its price and the fact that my friends were not going, because of its price. Its a cycle that GW caused and will cause the event to fail again if GW does not fix this.</div>Jaedchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00028193407474492426noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367957245647248361.post-20566766514296658442010-05-17T13:52:00.003-04:002010-05-17T14:05:37.570-04:00First Lady Speaks at GWU 2010 Commencement<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DLs61PNq5Yg/S_GDjmS4jBI/AAAAAAAAHno/yipSlDOXmWE/s1600/CIMG0044.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DLs61PNq5Yg/S_GDjmS4jBI/AAAAAAAAHno/yipSlDOXmWE/s320/CIMG0044.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472299669830274066" /></a><br />Yesterday on the National Mall in front of the Capitol over 25,000 people attended the George Washington University Commencement ceremony. With over 2,500 different kind of students graduating it was <a href="http://media.www.gwhatchet.com/media/storage/paper332/news/2010/05/17/News/Obama.Addresses.Class.Of.2010-3919835.shtml">quite a scene.</a><div><br /></div><div>While the focal point was obviously the students, it was Mrs. Obama's challenge and speech that is garnering so much <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=safari&tbo=p&rls=en&tbs=nws%3A1&q=michelle+obama+gw+commencement&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=">news attention</a>. Earlier this year, Obama challenged the GW community to log 100,000 of DC-based community service, in return she would speak at commencement. The GW community logged over 160,000 hours, and as she said she "is a woman of her word." She spoke, at great length, about the praise she received from the recipients of the service as well as studying abroad and broadening horizons.</div><div><br /></div><div>GWU required students to show up for Secret Service security screening at 7:30 AM. Lets just say certain students were a bit rowdy as sleep had apparently not been a priority the night before but the event went off seamlessly. By the end the chattering and moving around definitely increased as students had been there for going on 5 hours but the excitement was in the air. Even after graduating the day or two before students were still thrilled to be there and see Mrs. Obama speak. </div><div><br /></div><div>As a proud member of the GWU Columbian College of Arts and Sciences 2010 graduating class, I can say I enjoyed commencement, especially Mrs. Obama's speech and am glad I don't ever have to do it again!</div><div><div><br /></div><div>On a more personal note, if you go to the last picture of the GW Hatchet <a href="http://media.www.gwhatchet.com/media/storage/paper332/news/2010/05/17/News/Obama.Addresses.Class.Of.2010-3919835.shtml">slideshow</a>, my face is partially blocked but I am the guy in the center in black sunglasses.</div></div>Jaedchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00028193407474492426noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367957245647248361.post-1374814545277246212010-05-12T00:43:00.002-04:002010-05-12T17:26:42.014-04:00Zero Year Reunion!A<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4cepBA7OpLQ6NLk6lVTllesBDxB5xWI3XsKbMlrPAxXwmmDHGbGhMfaR3GuTk2c0zZlPkVTOq3wdijNa8AG1gZu05oak3vtzdDtxu5UwDu3w1SoAGsBzYB2LwiNt4qW0DmOFmoCnHxLc/s1600/5335_125146490481_117902030481_3554618_1710413_n.jpg"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 201px; height: 207px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4cepBA7OpLQ6NLk6lVTllesBDxB5xWI3XsKbMlrPAxXwmmDHGbGhMfaR3GuTk2c0zZlPkVTOq3wdijNa8AG1gZu05oak3vtzdDtxu5UwDu3w1SoAGsBzYB2LwiNt4qW0DmOFmoCnHxLc/s320/5335_125146490481_117902030481_3554618_1710413_n.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470497913999509554" border="0" /></a>nd the celebrating continues...now that every one is done with classes why night celebrate one more night this week? After suggestions from Google's legal team as to how the FCC could work around the Court's decision by reclassifying the services offered by broadband carriers under a new legal framework, the FCC will reportedly reaffirm its support for net neutrality at an event on Thursday.<br /><br />Net Neutrality is the concept that Internet service providers should not be able to discriminate between providing equal access to different online content. GW has their own Study Abroad programs, but they will rarely grant exemptions for people to do programs that aren't sanctioned by the University. <br /><br />The <a href="http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:ac7Bzd30-BwJ:trustees.gwu.edu/doc.cfm%3Fid%3D1031+gwu+mission+statement&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgD6mt04Qj6MZu7MKMq89nRhqFmNvXJKumvm4GL7bvhygSCmdgBLAEDvY3d6Xg8-33ocOxt7grn6pqkyDy3-M6si_ETyPixZ3Bxv_W12jyOBJZagne72H9nzZB25bYo4GlLku2d&sig=AHIEtbSscdSL4Na5b8wRBTOqBIpfJhhA6Q">University's Mission Statement</a> contains the following statement:<br /><blockquote>To promote the process of lifelong learning from both global and integrative<br />perspectives, the University provides a stimulating intellectual environment for its<br />diverse students and faculty.</blockquote><br />How can the University truly claim that they are "providing a stimulating intellectual environment" when they are intentionally stifling the opportunities that so many students aren't allowed to pursue when looking to study overseas? <br /><br />One of the programs from the people that have expressed similar outrage at GW's policy took part in Semester at Sea. Check out one of their Professor's of Engineering from The University of Virginia <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRTZcDcAJ0g">talk about his views on the program</a> (the YouTube channel prevents embedded videos, but check out the link.)<br /><br />The idea that other schools of comparable quality, such as the University of Virginia, who sponsors the Semester at Seas program, deem these programs to be intellectually beneficial should be enough for our school to support them. Aside from that, the University should be listening to students on issues like this. We are their consumers, and we are the ones that have paid a lot of money to come here to learn. At a University that prides itself on its globally reaching programs and in the globalized world we live in today, there is no question that we should be able to more effectively petition the University to acknowledge these accredited programs. <br /><br />If you want to join our Facebook group, <a href="http://bit.ly/bDdblq">check it out here</a>.Charliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15606937967498996227noreply@blogger.com66tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367957245647248361.post-52931941252940839502010-05-03T16:44:00.000-04:002010-05-03T16:44:26.811-04:00GW Students for GWorld x SmarTripAfter two weeks, more than 250 people have joined our Facebook group "We want SmarTrip on our GWorld Cards!" and we are continuing to gain support from many students. <br />
<div><br />
</div><div>More than its mere quantitative progress, however, our group project members would like to share some of the comments that we received from the students who signed the petition. </div><div><br />
</div><div>Many students, as we had anticipated, showed their support for better convenience and accessibility that this initiative could bring in. </div><blockquote>Save me the hassle, time and cash. The campaign was met with some <a href="http://gwblogspot.blogspot.com/2010/04/gw-students-act-like-adults.html">criticism</a> after its breaking news blog <a href="http://gwblogspot.blogspot.com/2010/04/breaking-news-i-want-to-know-campaign.html">post</a>, but there have been some positive responses to make this campaign a reality. <div>
<br /></div><div>After discovering the University calendar alert system, a <a href="http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/H7MKXPV">survey</a> was created to gather knowledge on whether students knew of its existence or utilized it. The survey was sent to all Facebook members, now at 100(!), as well as various classes, so far collecting 65 responses. E-mails have been sent to the Business School, Elliot School of International Affairs and SMPA with only two list-serv administrators replying.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>The SMPA informed "I Want To Know" that they are working to create a list-serv like this for next fall. At the moment, they are unsure how they will notify students of its existence, but "I Want To Know" is pressing for a once-a-semester university-wide email. The Elliot School said it already has a sign-up option in place and was curious if that was the campaign's goal. "I Want To Know" responded that it wishes for Elliot to also email the students to let them know of this option and currently waits for another response. A couple e-mails to the Columbian School and GWSB have not received responses. </div><div>
<br /></div><div>"I Want To Know" also contacted the Alumni Association president, who believed alumni would also like to find out when they can attend prominent speakers. However, no contacts were ever given to promote the cause. The campaign will continue for the next couple weeks, hoping to gain more Facebook supporters, survey responses and the promise of an optional sign-up list serv for each school. Monday was a no-brainer; Thursday I had an exam and a presentation; but Friday was different. Friday was my last day. My last day ever to go to a class. Did I pay attention? Not really. Did I play on my computer? Kind of. Did I sit with my friends and revel in the fact that we were finished with our undergraduate lives? Yes.<div><br /></div><div>What do I do now? Sure, I have another exam and three papers left to write. However, I'm talking about the bigger picture. I, like <a href="http://gwblogspot.blogspot.com/2010/04/reflections-of-senior.html">Senioritis</a>, face unemployment and homelessness (alright, a bit of an exaggeration with my internship and sublet), and freak out when I think about graduating. We're kind of on our own, but after finishing classes yesterday, I am finally starting to look forward to it.</div><div><br /></div><div>While GW student may complain (a lot) about the University and its shortfalls (housing, Fix-It, food, partying and school spirit), we have been given way more opportunities. As I visited state universities and envied their fun, I wondered if I could re-do college I would change my choice. Today? No. At the beginning of the semester all of my classes discussed our current internships and future aspirations, and it's astounding how privileged and connected we are. There is no doubt that GW students have it made.</div><div><br /></div><div>We stormed the White House after Obama's election. We attended Inauguration. We work for the Hill and their press. We hang out on the Mall and the Lincoln Memorial is in on our backyard. We might not be in a hurry to get out to the real world, but we're ready. </div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://adamblueproductions.com/graduation-songs-2010/graduation-song-2009.jpg">Photo credit</a></div><div><br /></div>Jordan_Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11896828055318742732noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367957245647248361.post-86052077226320773722010-04-30T17:56:00.001-04:002010-04-30T17:57:27.577-04:00AU Gives Students SmarTrip-Enabled IDs - GW Should FollowLast February, <a href="http://media.www.gwhatchet.com/media/storage/paper332/news/2010/02/18/News/American.Tests.Smartrip.Id.Card-3874300.shtml">the Hatchet reported</a> that American University was beginning to test a new student ID card that would give students access to the DC metro via SmarTrip. This month, the Eagle - AU's student-run newspaper - is reporting that this successful program is being <a href="http://www.theeagleonline.com/news/story/auid-smartrip-card-program-expands-to-300-students/">expanded</a> to 300 AU students:<br />
<blockquote>Housing and Dining will distribute 300 of these hybrid cards on a first-come, first-served basis. All non-graduating students are eligible to participate in the program.<br />
<br />
SG has worked with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority since last June to provide a Metro discount for AU students. The pilot program will provide data on student ridership that is necessary to determine the cost of subsidizing a possible student discount. The pilot program will be in effect from April until October, according to SG President Andy MacCracken.<br />
<br />
A 20-card pilot program has already taken place to make sure the cards work, he said.<br />
<br />
“We’ve so far had a 100 percent success rate,” he said. “We’re moving forward with an expanded pilot program.”</blockquote>So not only is AU testing a SmarTrip-student ID hybrid, but they're also considering funding a student metro discount for its students. <br />
<br />
I don't believe that this discount is necessary - even with the recent fare hikes, the metro is still much less expensive than taking a cab or riding the bus. But enabling students to use their school ID cards as SmarTrip cards would make it much more convenient for students to access the metro. And with GW currently revamping its GWorld cards to give it a tap-and-enter system similar to that used by SmarTrip cards, now is the time for GW to follow in AU's footsteps and give its students metro access on their GWorld cards.<br />
<br />
We're not asking for a discount: we're just asking the school to take this opportunity to give students a way to easily access the metro without having to buy a separate metro card.<br />

Of course, your financial aid falling through, failing a class (or coming close to failing), and not getting housing are things that might seem like the end of the world, they are not. No matter how bad it gets with whatever it is there is always some other way, some alternative to whatever situation you are in that might prove a good solution if you just sit back and look. Too often GW students think that they are the masters of the universe and that everything out there bows before them and lead them towards some form of brash action; sorry to disappoint all of you but often you do more harm than good in the long term.<br /><br />Democrats- Republicans are not the enemy. Republicans- Democrats are not the enemy.<br /><br />You have been babied here; <a href="http://facilities.gwu.edu/">fixit </a>comes in and (sometimes) repairs your running toilet, replaces a light bulb, or unclogs a leaky drain. Learn to do some of these things yourself, go out and buy a basic tool kit with a hammer, pliers, and a screwdriver, a roll of duct tape, and can of WD-40, tools in hand you will be fine. If something breaks you can fix it, and if you cannot do it with those basic tools look online for what you need and make a project out of it. You and you roommates will have fun.<br /><br />Take a class outside your comfort zone; take Modern Yiddish Literary Classics in Translation, Modern Dance, or Japanese Swordsmanship. You will learn more about you than you will about the topic (not that you will not learn a lot about dance). You will also get to meet a lot of <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6PfBRU_pQsY/S9SjO2EFFiI/AAAAAAAAADY/iNaGlYUqf6k/s1600/Michelle%2BObama%2BGives%2BCommencement%2BAddress%2B-K-IZUpYClTl.jpg"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 137px; height: 234px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_6PfBRU_pQsY/S9SjO2EFFiI/AAAAAAAAADY/iNaGlYUqf6k/s320/Michelle%2BObama%2BGives%2BCommencement%2BAddress%2B-K-IZUpYClTl.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464171723333375522" border="0" /></a>interesting people.<br /><br />That’s it, I am on my way out the door facing unemployment, homelessness, and a degree in History (what do I do with that?) but on May 16 we “walk” at university commencement, hear Michelle Obama and her attempt to inspire us after giving us one last prerequisite for her appearance, and then….<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/e50GGL8efX_/Michelle+Obama+Gives+Commencement+Address/-K-IZUpYClT/Michelle+Obama">Photo Credit 1</a>senioritishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09206112141920235743noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367957245647248361.post-56930472257397293292010-04-25T15:08:00.008-04:002010-04-25T15:37:31.578-04:00College Students Addicted to Social Media, Says Study<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://withoutmedia.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/wordle2-for-110k.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 600px; height: 200px;" src="http://withoutmedia.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/wordle2-for-110k.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><div><br /></div>A <a href="http://www.newsdesk.umd.edu/sociss/release.cfm?ArticleID=2144">study out of the University of Maryland</a> says that college students are addicted to social media and use the same diction as drug addicts to describe their withdrawal from it.<div><br /></div><div>200 students were asked to abstain from social media, including Facebook, Twitter, texting, and online instant messaging for 24 hours. Let me take a second to address a few points, seeing as I was actually in attendance and actually know what took place and why.<br /><br /><blockquote>The meeting lasted approximately an hour. Almost none of the cabinet appointees faced any questioning at all, much less serious questioning. Every single one of them passed.<br /><br />This is fucking pathetic.</blockquote><br />Fact: The meeting was approximately an hour long<br />Fiction: Almost none of the cabinet faced any questions at all, much less serious questioning<br /><br />The reality is that all of the candidates were either qualified or demonstrated a passion for their respective chairmanship positions that these positions need. I can remember at least 3 examples where nominees were drilled with questions about the things they wanted to change about the SA: The nominees for VP Public Affairs, Teddy Dooley, a nominee for JCFS, and Eddie Warton, the SA Rep to the Marvin Center Governing Board. <br /><br />In each case, the issues raised weren't about their "qualifications", but about their proposals policies they wanted to address. In each specific case, it was because of plans that each nominee had that the Senate-Elect felt were probably too ambitious or vague, such as "improving J Street" or "significantly increasing the quality of advising". Being an over-ambitious Freshman is hardly a reason to have your nomination to the Executive Cabinet blocked.<br /><br />For each of these nominees, people raised questions about how the nominees planned to implement these proposals, and tried to steer them toward narrowing their focus or centering on things that students really care about, such as focusing on a better program for allocating student space in the Marvin Center instead of the standard "improving J Street". In each case, I felt that the nominees that were questioned were much better prepared after the meeting than before it, and I have confidence that they will do a good job, and I plan to hold their feet to the fire and publicly embarrass them for reneging on their promises if they don't. <br /><br /><blockquote>I'm not saying that there were people nominated who were unqualified. But I am saying that the senate-elect had no way of knowing that. They could all be fine nominees, or they could all be terrible and run the organization in to the ground. The senate-elect couldn't care less.</blockquote><br /><br />I also have a problem with your use of the term "unqualified". No More Tools, remember? "Qualified" should never be the first adjective that the SA should look for in its leaders. Ambition, creativity, and passion are three that are much more important than finding "qualified" candidates. The senate-elect did read over their bios and listened to their platforms. What more did you expect the Senate to do to show that we cared? Ask unnecessary questions of people that clearly have their shit together and everyone planned on supporting, just for the sake of asking questions?<br /><br /><blockquote>Being an SA senator is not a hard job. If you're not willing to put in an hour reading candidate's information and asking them a goddam question at the senate meeting, you're not doing your job. What happened tonight was an unacceptable lapse in responsibility on the part of the senate-elect.</blockquote><br />"Lapse in responsibility", just because the nominees were all approved and people didn't waste time asking questions of people that they already planned on supporting and that had strong platforms already?<br /><br /><blockquote>Out of 8 candidates for Vice Presidential positions, only ONE of them was asked a question. And it was the candidate for VPPA, one of the more useless of the VP positions.<br /><br />That, to me, is unacceptable.</blockquote><br />So, your problem isn't with the nominees themselves, but with the Senate not asking them enough questions? Even people who were clearly good choices for the positions? <br /><br />Again, while these people all seem like solid choices to me, some of them will inevitably become complacent next year, at which point the Senate should absolutely go after them for not follow through on the things that they promised. However, to act like the Senate didn't do it's job because they didn't ask enough questions for your liking is a little ridiculous.Charliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15606937967498996227noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367957245647248361.post-41559459665262084442010-04-19T01:23:00.005-04:002010-04-19T01:29:41.249-04:00Senior Turmoil<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xLTRtxj79uw/S8vpaJep83I/AAAAAAAAABc/kGZTF2GbWJQ/s1600/hire_me.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xLTRtxj79uw/S8vpaJep83I/AAAAAAAAABc/kGZTF2GbWJQ/s320/hire_me.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461715608547226482" /></a><p class="MsoNormal">Seniors,</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> The big day is approaching!
