The Student Rhythm at Gustavus in November

Staying healthy can be a challenge for college students, especially during November. The first round of colds and flu hitting campus, the emotional stress of mid-term exams/grades, and irregular sleep and eating schedules all converge. Student schedules are full with academic and extra-curricular activities, including many exams and papers that will be due before Thanksgiving. Roommate challenges become more clear. Juniors and seniors are applying for internships, jobs, and graduate school. Mid-term grades are available to students on the Web, which often prompts renewed focus on studying. Students can also feel excitement and/or anxiety about going home for Thanksgiving. Finally, financial stress may hit with the coming of the holiday season.

Meal Plan

Most students are on one of the meal plans offered by the Dining Service. Although students at times perceive meal costs to be high, Gustavus has the lowest-cost food prices among Minnesota private colleges and is also ranked as one of the top programs for food quality and selection in the country. The Dining Service provides a guideline for each plan so students may determine if they are on pace with their use of the meal plan. The Dining Service is always open to suggestions for new entrees or ways to support the dietary needs of the students. Information is available online at http://gustavus.edu/diningservices/.

Choosing Classes

November is the time students select classes for January Term and Spring Semester. Students prepare in advance for their meetings with their advisors by reviewing their degree audits which show them their progress toward their degrees, major and general education requirements yet to be met, and total number of courses completed so far. This review also gives them a chance to consider academic planning, determining if there’s time for study abroad or semester or summer internships. Students will meet with staff in the Advising Center, Career Center, the Center for Vocational Reflection, and other faculty members so that when they meet with their advisor for approval to register, they are bringing thoughtful ideas to the conversation. Also, a number of departments offer information sessions about their major and what their graduates are doing following graduation. In addition to talking with advisors and campus resources about how to think about spring courses, this meeting time with advisors is timely in that mid-term grades are out, and the deadline for withdrawing from a course is still a few days off. It’s a valuable check-in time to see how advisees are doing. First-year students’ professors in the First Term Seminar program are their advisors until they are ready to declare their major anytime after the fall semester. First-year students in Curriculum II have one of their CII professors as their advisors until they’re ready to declare their major anytime after the fall semester.

Gustavus Residence Halls Closed During Break

The halls are closed during the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break periods. Students who are not able to leave campus for the breaks due to the distance to their homes may be housed in the on-campus hostel with permission from the Residential Life Office.

Health Care Career Explorations

The Gustavus Career Center is looking for professionals in the health care field to host students for January Interim Career Explorations. This January 2010 is a difficult year with H1N1 and shadowing opportunities in hospitals and clinics are limited. If you are in the health care field and would be able and willing to potentially host a Gustavus student for this January or a future January please email Heather in the Career Center at hbanks@gac.edu.

Commission Gustavus 150 Report

Hundreds of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends joined together to generate recommendations to manifest the College’s Strategic Plan through the Commission Gustavus 150 process. We invite you to review two important documents available on the Commission website. The first document, “Report of Commission Gustavus 150,” explains the Commission process and includes all the recommendations made by the Commission’s eight task forces to carry forward the College’s Strategic Plan. The second, “Strategic Framework,” presents the recommendations, consolidated, categorized, and prioritized by the Gustavus Board of Trustees. Commission Gustavus 150 is an exciting, dynamic process, and we should all expect to see substantial progress regarding the specific recommendations in both the short term and, as importantly, over the next ten years.

Gustavus Library Associates presents its 17^th biennial benefit gala Shine…A Royal Affair on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis. Join us for this glamorous evening filled with tradition, entertainment, and dining in the company of many fellow friends of Gustavus while supporting the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library. This year, current Gustavus students and alumni will be providing all of the evening entertainment. Even if you cannot join us, you can still help with this fundraiser as A Royal Affair will once again offer an advance online auction. It’s a great way to get a start on your holiday shopping while supporting Gustavus’s library. Items may be viewed beginning on Nov. 5 at gustavus.edu/gla where you will also find detailed instructions for bidding. Bidding will open on Nov. 5 and close on Nov. 12. These items are exclusive to the online auction and will not be available for bidding at A Royal Affair.

Parents are great at encouraging their student to make the most out of their future. To that end, the Career Center would like to remind you of all the ways to stay in touch with what is happening on campus regarding career decisions, employers, and workshops. The Career Center website houses a large variety of information for students, alumni, and employers. It should be your first stop in understanding the many services offered by Career Center staff and the number of resources we have available. Additionally we have recently started a blog to share career related information with students in a fun, irreverent, accessible way. Finally, we use our Twitter account to give students instant updates about new internship postings, employers interviewing on campus, and other exciting news.
