When I think of great tone I tend to think of artists like Brian May, Dave Gilmour, Jimmy Page and Mark Knopfler. What sort of guitar cable do they (and many more) use? Pete Cornish Cable, that’s what.

Cable is often forgotten or ignored in the tone equation, and that’s a big mistake. Good quality cable can make a world of difference in what comes out of your amp (or P.A).

I recently purchased some Pete Cornish cable after doing some research on what would be the best cable to buy, and have be extremely impressed by how good it is. I was expecting great things, but this cable far exceeded my expectations.

So next time you have the chance, grab a few different guitar cables and compare them, you’ll be surprised at how much difference there is in your sound, and if you take my advice, go and find some high quality cable (which usually comes with a lifetime warranty) and enjoy you guitar (or bass playing) that much more.

The above blog link saved me a bunch of time so I thought I’d link it here with the hope that some other Sysadmin may be saved a bit of frustration.

I’d installed Solaris10 10/08 on an Sun Ultra2 and was looking to setup a mirrored root using:

zpool attach rpool c0t0d0s0 c0t1d0s0

The error I received was:

Device is too small

I thought this was a bit odd considering that both drives are exactly the same size. After much googling I discovered the above link and using format -e as described in the blog post, changed the drive’s label from an EFI label to an SMI, and voila..all problems solved and the aforementioned Ultra2 is now booting from a mirrored root.

Thank you Mike Brannigan

Thanks to everyone who came to my clinic on the night of the 3rd of June. We had really good attendance and from the feedback I’ve gotten since, everyone found it really informative and helpful.

I spoke about using the Line6 Pod family of amp emulators with Digidesign’s Mbox2 range of products. I’ve been using one version or another of both of these products for quite a long time and have been recommending them to all of my students.

This was the first clinic that we (IMA – the Independent Music Academy) have done in association with Billy Hyde. Hopefully, many more will follow. So a big thank you to everyone at Billy Hyde for making the night possible, as well as to all of you who attended the night!

On Tuesday the 20th of May I’ll be doing a workshop on using recording to improve your practice and make it more fun. I’ll be focussing specifically on the Line6 PodXT and Digidesign’s Pro Tools software.

I’ve been using and recommending these products to clients for years as they’re great products and very much the industry standard. There will be lots of practical examples and you’ll go away with a excellent understanding of the most effective way to practise.

The workshop will be held at Billy Hyde’s on Barry Pde in Fortitude Valley.

Well, it looks like Satriani will be back in town on the 17th of July at the Tivoli. Joe was probably one of the first guitarists that I really got into, so I’m looking forward to seeing him in a more intimate venue. I was a little disappointed by the sound at the last G3 gig here in Brisbane, so hopefully this one will be a lot better.
