The system is under attack by a gang of pirates called the Guild of the Cowry Catchers who prey on Temple treasure ships. The Temple Police charged with eradicating this menace keep disappearing. Enter Gerard, a young prince, exiled from his small kingdom for rashly marrying the court minstrel. He has been chosen by the High Priestess as the new captain of Police. Gerard is smart, honorable, and a little naive. To break the pirate ring, he must cooperate with a wily, amoral colleague, who has already tried to kill him twice. As Gerard struggles to protect his talented wife, obey his seductive employer, and forge a complicated friendship with his dangerous co-worker, he becomes increasingly aware that the pirates have a legitimate quarrel with the wyverns. Dark secrets lurk in the Temple dungeons, and solving them will cost Gerard far more than his honor. Thessalyn is a gifted, blind child from a peasant family. She’s been sent to the prestigious school of Minstrels on the island of Mance, but she feels like an awkward outsider. Things seem to improve when the school loans her a griffin, Chesher, for reading and navigating. However, Chesher has her own handicap—stumps where her wings should be. One day in the library, they find an ancient book in a language that Chesher can’t or won’t read to Thessalyn. Chesher seems frightened by the mysterious book, but hums a bit of the tune at Thessalyn’s request. The haunting melody is the key that will unlock secrets from the past and change the course of both their futures.

Silveo Timeline (his age in years)

6 – first memories (earlier stuff repressed, but occasionally crops up)

7 – mother renting him out at brothel

8 – mother disappears, becomes resident at the brothel

9(ish?) – meets Malpin

12 ½ – escapes brothel

13 – meets Lu (she’s 15), leaves Sern later in the year, takes Lu with him, helps her set up shop on Haplag

14 – relocates Malpin (early in the year), tries to join Resistance (late in the year)

15 – Meets Basil, tries to kill Leopaard (30 – same age as Basil)

16 – Malpin disappears

17 – joins Sea Watch

18 – Thess 10 years old, she visits Leopaard on her tour, Gwain 19

19 – made Admiral of Temple Sea Watch, takes his revenge on Sern

20 – Basil shows turns up again, joins Sea Watch, made officer by Silveo

22 – Thess 14, takes her debut tour and decides to accept Lord Holovar’s invitation to be the court minstrel of Holovarus, returns there

25 – Thess 17, Gerard 21 – begin their affair – about the same time that Silveo and Basil try to make it work again

27 – Thess 19, Gerard 23 – Thess gets pregnant

28 – Silveo meets Gerard when he joins Sea Watch (Gerard is 24)
