Shelby Park Celebrates 100 Years

Join East Nashville as it celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Shelby Park this Saturday, October 13th. A source of entertainment and beauty for so many over the years, this beloved park is one of the best spots in Nashville for a round of golf with the guys, an afternoon picnic with friends or a healthy exercise session, given all the hills and walking paths weaving through the landscape.

Friends of Shelby Park and Bottoms, Inc is producing the event. This organization is supported through a volunteer board and a membership of over 300 people. Its main fundraiser, the Music City Hot Chicken Festival held in July each year, brings generous amounts of people and donations… but additional resources and volunteers are always welcome. What a great way to support your city!

This well-planned event includes many diverse activities ranging from the Southern Word Shelby Classic Golf Scramble to the Goo Goo Clusters Jog & Hog. You can also check out dance performances, live music or even catch the Nashville Grizzlies Rugby Exhibition Match.

For those who creativity draws them in, you won’t want to miss the art exhibit. Fourteen local artists have created new works of art inspired by Shelby Park itself. Decorate your halls and support the park this weekend by purchasing a painting. Artists are donating 50% of the sales to Friends of Shelby Park and Bottoms. You’ll also want to catch a glimpse of the public art dedication of the newly installed sculpture, Reflection.

Celebrate Culture: Nashville Style

This weekend marks the 14th anniversary of the Celebrate Nashville Cultural Festival. This event was initially established by the Scarritt-Bennett Center to “provide an avenue for different cultures to share their traditions through music, dance, activities, food and crafts.” The annual celebration has become incredibly popular; it’s grown in attendance from 2,500 to over 40,000 in recent years. You won’t want to miss it!

The fun starts this Saturday, October 6th at 10 a.m. at Centennial Park in Nashville. You’ll want to get there early to grab a good spot for the opening stage show… then stick around for things like International Folk Dancers, traditional Irish Music, a New Orleans style brass band and more! Kids can get in on things like creating their own play, listening to a few Native American stories or even learning some fun yoga moves.

These great festivals always include an opportunity to shop! Start knocking things off your holiday list a little early in the World Market, filled with a wide variety of booths offering beautiful hand-made gift items. Browse through the Global Village to learn about the customs and traditions of cultures from around the world. And don’t forget to bring your appetite! This year, you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner here! Test your taste buds on rich Greek food, cupcakes from Panama and fragrant Thai food, just to name a few. And if you haven’t been inside the Parthenon, now’s your chance to explore the history of the great Athena… for free!

A New Look for Parks, but Same Great Commitment to Nashville: Unveiling a New Brand for Parks Properties

Today begins a new chapter at Parks Properties.

We’re thrilled to announce that we have a new name, new look and new message for the work we are doing in the Nashville community.

In 1999, when we opened our office in Green Hills, we positioned ourselves as the boutique brand of Bob Parks Realty dedicated to serving the Nashville community.

Although that has worked fairly well for us, opening a new office in the Gulch has presented the perfect opportunity to strengthen our brand and better position ourselves in the overall marketplace.

As part of this effort, we conducted focus groups and extensive research about our branding in the Nashville community. We confirmed what we long suspected – the Parks Properties name was confusing to consumers. Not only did many people miss that we are affiliated with Bob Parks Realty, but the name misled people about what we do.

So, we decided to change it.

As of today, Parks Properties will simply be known as Parks. This change reflects what many people already call us. And, we hope, it will offer a stronger tie-in to the overall Bob Parks brand.

To go along with this name change, we have also developed a new logo that will be implemented on all of our materials.

We feel this logo offers a nice update of the iconic “P” that has served both the Parks Properties and Bob Parks Realty brands. Our new logo is strong and bold, yet fresh and sophisticated. We feel this is the perfect look to serve all of our Parks offices and the vibrant communities we serve.

And finally, we are also introducing a new tagline that we feel encompasses what the Parks brand is all about – “At home in Nashville.”

This message speaks to several key points about our company and what we do:

To BBQ or Not to BBQ… That’s a Silly Question!

Football season is upon us, and with it comes tailgating, team colors and the most mouth-watering flavors this side of the Mississippi. If you haven’t been following The American Grillmaster Experience, you’ll want to get in on it now… and Grillmaster, Michael McDearman, is just the one to get you hooked on the flavors of the season.

This month, Sam’s Club in Hendersonville hosted The American Grillmaster Experience. Travelling through 28 states, the group provides a hands on grilling education with free samples, seminars, and recipes for all those that attend. McDearman was there teaching his two-time award winning steak grilling technique to eager onlookers. Michael loves what he does. “After 34 years of cooking, I love sharing all my world champion tips and techniques with folks. It’s about having those memories and experiences with good eats, so I capture my passion and energy in outdoor cooking and relay it through these events.”

6th Annual Dragon Boat Races

In 277 B.C. (more than 2,300 years ago) a beloved Chinese Statesman named Qu Yuan threw himself into the Mei Lo River as he lamented the defeat of his kingdom. His people raced out in their traditional longboats to try and save him, beating the water with their paddles and scattering rice into the water to make sure his soul never went hungry. This was the birth of Dragon Boat Racing.

The Cumberland River has brought Dragon Boat racing to downtown for the past five years, and is proud to announce the 6th Annual Dragon Boat Races this Saturday, September 29th. The first rowers will face off at 9:00 AM and more than 50 teams will fight for the title of Grand Champion. With teams sponsored by everyone from Belmont University, Lightning 100, and Coca Cola Bottling Co. the whole of Nashville comes to either participate or join the thousands of spectators that cheer from the banks.

Traditional Chinese dancers will demonstrate throughout the day, and vendors will have booths set up providing samples, food and drinks. So pick a team, like “We’re Sexy and We Row it” or “May the Oars be with you!” and stay for the day, cheering on a fun event steeped in cultural richness and tradition.

29th Annual Home Decorating and Remodeling Show

This entire weekend the Nashville Convention Center has given itself over to the homeowner’s dream. The 29th Annual Home Decorating and Remodeling show gives vendors an opportunity to showcase their wares for those Realtors looking for staging ideas, homeowners wanting to remodel, or those wanting to decorate their newly purchased homes as the real estate market shows a pleasant increase in sales over the last few months.

The Home Decorating and Remodeling Show focuses on new innovative products, decorating trends, and high end building supplies. Everything you could dream up for your home is here at the Convention Center this weekend, from beautiful reclaimed wood flooring to outdoor kitchen displays. Well over 600 different booths offer an endless variety of all things “home.” Faux Daddy Designs displays the unique custom wall finishes they offer. Chateau de Renaissance specializes in iron doors and gates that are made one at a time in Mexico. Elegant Outdoors of Nashville is showing off the Spaberry, calling this two-person portable spa the “new home appliance of the 21st century.”

While these is just a small sampling of the things you can see at the 29th Annual Home Decorating and Remodeling Show this year’s vendors are being environmentally conscious and doing their best to provide the “green” client with plenty of options for those wanting to reduce their carbon footprint. All these options and more for just $8.00 at the door.

Edley's BBQ - Sweet Meat to help Beat the Heat!

Our agent’s pick of the week for favorite culinary destination is a new member to the “slow ‘n low” BBQ business. Edley’s BBQ opened their doors in November of 2011 and in just one year have become a destination spot for locals and tourists alike. Recently mentioned in Southern Living’s list of Nashville’s New Flavors, Edley’s makes the grade for tender pork. Their mention of lime soda-spiked sauce is almost as tantalizing as the mention People magazine gave the place when Taylor Swift and her new beau, Conor Kennedy, were spotted sampling the mouth-watering sandwiches offered by Edley’s BBQ.

Wendy Monday, from our Parks Properties office in Green Hills, raved about Edley’s. "The food is excellent (even hard core barbeque fans agree on that). Go for the awesome patio and stay for the yummy food!" The patio is constructed of reclaimed wood and is the perfect place to consume a signature cocktail on a fresh fall evening.

Edley’s BBQ smokes their meat over local White Oak wood, only preparing enough for one day. Labor Day might be the perfect opportunity to head on over to 12th Ave South. With the opening of the SEC this weekend and the proximity to Belmont University, there will be plenty of people to meet, food to eat and drinks to drink! But remember, Edley’s is first-come, first-served; the only leftovers are what’s on your plate already!

Centennial Park

Most cities have a park or area that houses the heartbeat of downtown. Nashville’s Centennial Park has a history behind the heartbeat that makes the location all the more alluring. Rumor has it in 1777 the grounds of the Centennial Park were a land grant to Anne Robertson Johnson Cockrill, sister to General James Robertson. Anne Cockrill was recognized as a national hero when she helped to rescue Fort Wautaga from attack, and given the 132 acres as a thank you.

The 132 acres of farmland has served as the State Fairgrounds, a racetrack, and home to the Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition in 1897, which gave the grounds their current name. It was for this Expo that the Parthenon was created and it remains a popular attraction for tourists since it was refurbished in 1920 out of concrete and steel, making it a permanent addition to “The Athens of the South.”

Centennial Park offers year round activities ranging from sand volleyball to Shakespeare in the Park. A one mile walking tail winds through the grounds around the man-made lake Watauga, there are two dog parks, an events shelter, sunken gardens, and an exercise trail for those of a more stoic disposition, as well as a band shell for outdoor events. The Arts and Activities Center and the Centennial Sportsplex expand the options offered even more. Just a few upcoming events that will be hosted at Centennial include the fall season of the Musician’s Corner which opens September 1st with the Blind Boys of Alabama, Karen Elson and the Nashville Symphony Quartet. The 34th Annual TACA Fall Craft Fair is September 21st through the 23rd bringing artisans and crafters from across the region together for your shopping convenience.

Anytime you are looking for a quiet spot away from the hustle and bustle but still offers a wide variety of events, activities, and sights to see Centennial Park is the perfect place.

O'Possum's Pub - Recommended by an agent near you!

There is no better setting for a pub serving southern style Irish fare than one nestled within 20th century historically preserved walls. And that is exactly what O’Possum’s Pub in Murfreesboro offers.

Renovations within the existing shopping center, located at 2341 Memorial Blvd., revealed something exciting when false walls were torn down, exposing brickwork dating back to the late 1700’s. Some calls were made, the Historical Society came to visit, and a bar was installed, completing this quaint Irish Pub. The name for the restaurant comes from The O’Possum clan, who claims to be one of the oldest Irish clans and the inventor of beer as we know it. Whether or not that is true, O’Possum’s Pub presents its patrons with a wide variety of beer, ales, and whiskey to complement a menu replete with Irish fare such as “Bangers and Mash” and “Corned Beef and Cabbage.”

Receiving rave reviews across the internet, O’Possum’s Pub has become a popular stop for Murfreesboro residents. Laura Jones from our Murfreesboro office was the one who told us about this local flavorful historical gem saying, “Our favorite is O’Possum’s. It is a cute little Irish pub that brews its own beer, serves the best food in town, and has a great set of people that run it! The quiet during the daylight hours echoes down the halls of your home as you try to put your finger on the sounds that must be absent. Ah yes! School is back in session. Your elementary children no longer chatter incessantly or the high school bound have taken their laptops and smart phones off the kitchen table for the first time in months. Perhaps now would be a great time to think of a simple yet effective home renovation that creates peace and harmony between your student and the other members of the home: the built in desk or study nook.

One popular solution to the study nook is tucking it away in that extra length of wall most people have in their kitchen. A built-in kitchen desk must incorporate the style of your existing structures, as well as maintaining functionality. Easy to access storage is a must, as well as making sure those all of those cords are hidden and out of the way. The surge in popularity of the laptop has made desks more streamlined and accessible for other uses, since it is no longer necessary to hide bulky towers, keyboards, and corded mouses.

In smaller kitchens, a great option is converting a closet in a guest room into a custom study zone. Once nothing more than a catch all for clothes out of season and wrapping paper, these creative retrofitting ideas create much needed study space without taking up precious square footage in common living areas. Simply install a wide, sturdy shelf at desk height, add a few cubbies above for storage of papers and supplies, plug in a small desk lamp, pull up a chair and voila! Instant homework haven! Cost effective and much simpler for the do-it-yourselfer, this idea has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years. It’s even easy to return the closet to its former glory if need be.

If you’re thinking of remodeling your current home or building a new one, consider framing a desk under the stairs, next to a bumped out fireplace, or in the unused space between a closet and a doorframe. Another great spot for a reading or study area is the loft space at the top of the stairs… or in a large dormer in the bonus room. Utilizing hidden space in a home is one of the most important things you can do, and creating a harmonized spot for your student to study is always a good idea. No matter where you decide to designate “Study Central,” just be sure it is a quiet, well lit space, so your student can do his or her best and bring home that A!

Third Weekend of the Month and tons to do!

It’s time to remind you of the Night Market held every third Friday of the month at the Nashville Farmer’s Market. One night a month the market opens the stalls at 6:30 pm so you can shop local treats and produce beneath the stars. All the dining spots are open so whether you are craving a hint of the bayou from Louisiana Seafood Co. or something more eclectic with curry from Swagruha Indian there is something here to tantalize every taste bud. Acoustic artists pedal their own wares and the flea market allows you to shop till you drop… or until 8:30 pm when all the buds, vegetables, fruits and home baked goodies say goodnight.

If the Night Market isn’t enough free fun and culture for you the newly renovated Cumberland Park is hosting a Jazz night the third Sunday of the month through November. Jazz on the Cumberland is the first major event to grace the perfectly manicured greens of the brand new amphitheater. The series begins with The Roland Barber Quartet, and features food trucks, children’s activities, and another night of free culture.

The third weekend of the month is shaping up to be a great time to plan your family activities, your date nights, or group outings. Jazz, food, shopping under the stars… and it’s all free? Just one more weekend on the books to prove that Nashville is a great place to be!

Man Caves - a homeowner's dream!

With the launch of the football season men and women across the nation are fighting their own real estate battles over the remote, the couch, and the living spaces. Square footage is at a premium this time of year, and for the coming months nothing says peace on the home front like every man’s dream: the man cave.

A “man cave” is generally designated as a room specifically dedicated to the man of the house, and his passion. Whether that is hockey, football, wine, or poker there is usually some contention among the other members of the house as to where this memorabilia is located or watched. The best solution to this age old dilemma is the man cave. If you are lucky enough to have the ability to take part in this booming real-estate trend the advancements in available technology make the man cave an asset as well as an enjoyable retreat.

Perhaps a new 55” 3D television set is in order. There are some fantastic furniture solutions that offer a sleek hiding spot for that new electronic gadget, giving both form and function a football lover’s definition. A beer or wine cooler is also a great option for those that can’t install a full bar so the beverage of choice can be on hand and chilled. Furniture options tend to run towards masculine leather couches in rich colors with recliners on each end. This material is a perfect solution since leather is easily cleaned and less likely to stain. Flooring selections have also expanded, ranging from easy to install carpet tiles to stained concrete.

The addition of a man cave can create peace and harmony in a household as well as increasing a home’s potential value. The lure of a space dedicated to quiet time and personal enjoyment is hard to resist and no matter who views the room we can guarantee one thing – that person can see themselves, and their passion, firmly ensconced there.

Tomato Art Fest 2012

Did you know the tomato is both a fruit and vegetable? Did you also know that East Nashville has a festival to celebrate this unique border crossing fruit-able? This weekend the Tomato Art Fest kicks off the 8th annual celebration of this squishy wonder of the edible world.

Right in the epicenter of the Five Points, before there even was a Five Points, Meg and Bret MacFadyen were working artists with a vision. Converting a garage located on Woodland Street into a locally lauded art gallery called the Art & Invention Center, the couple started the tomato worship in 2004 with a show dedicated to the often overlooked fruit. In 2011, an estimated 18,000 people attended to view the artwork, watch the parades, and participate in the tomato loving fun.

This year’s lineup consists of everything from a Tomato Elf and Fairy contest for the kids (or you if you want to get out the glitter too), a fun fest full of bouncy houses and face painting, gallery exhibits at the Art & Invention Center, a 5K run, pet and wildlife demonstrations sponsored by 5Points Animal Hospital, and a Second Line Parade featuring you and your instrument and costume of choice. There is even a Faux Paws Fashion show so man’s best friend can show off their furry duds for the day. With all these options, and plenty of tomato based food items that will tickle the taste buds of even the most discerning vegetable lover, this is certainly something worth making the trip to East Nashville for this weekend.

Frist Fridays 2012

This Friday, July 27th is the continuation of the 10th annual installment of the Frist Center for the Visual Art’s summer concert series “Frist Friday 2012.” A $10.00 general admission ticket not only allows you to gain admission to the constantly evolving exhibits decking the art deco halls, it also allows you to educate your eardrums with the sultry rockabilly strains of “The Band of Heathens.” Hailing from Austin and recently gracing stages at Lallapalooza and Bonnaroo this Texas band has gathered quite the following. Appetizers will also be provided and a cash bar completes your Friday night outing.

The current exhibits at the Frist feature Creation Story: Gees Bend Quilt and the Art of Thornton Dial and the work of Bill Traylor. Traylor was born into slavery on an Alabama plantation, and didn’t start creating his visceral compositions until he was 82 years old. Now defined as one of the great artists of the 20th century this exhibit compliments the mellow musical stylings of The Band of Heathens quite nicely.

With just two installments left of the Frist Fridays 2012 summer concert series make sure you don’t miss out on this musical outing as only Nashville can do it. Live music, earth-altering artworks, appetizers and alcohol all in the same venue creates a perfect setting in which to experience middle Tennessee in all its glory.

The Nutty Professor at TPAC

July 24th marks a world premier event happening right in the hallowed halls of our very own Tennessee Performing Arts Center. For the first time ever, Jerry Lewis makes his theatrical directorial debut onstage, instead of on the big screen. “The Nutty Professor – A New Musical” is based on the 1963 movie that has brought laughs into our homes and hearts for all these years. Jerry Lewis, the star performer of the film “The Nutty Professor“has created this Broadway adaptation set to premier this evening at TPAC.

Julius Kelp, the geek with the heart of gold, accidentally creates an alter-ego named Buddy Love, a smooth talking charmer that steals the heart of the professor’s love interest. A story of love, laughter, honesty, and self-discovery this musical centers on the funny bone while simultaneously tugging at your heart strings. Performed through August 19th, there are plenty of opportunities to belly laugh with a timeless entertainer’s dream and find out if Julius Kelp gets to keep the girl after Love has left the scene.

The real estate market is heating up! Homes are selling faster than they have in several years. Multiple offers are no longer a thing of the past. Is your home being shown regularly? If not, consider your pricing strategy and your marketing options.

There’s always been a bit of a debate about open houses. Truth is, it’s one more avenue to get potential buyers… or maybe just a few curious neighbors… into your home. If you prefer to do a virtual tour versus an actual open house, the rules are the same. You’ll want to get things spic-n-span, sparkling fresh and move-in ready. Enlist the help of a professional stager, if you can. Or at least take an objective look alongside your Realtor®.

Now that you’ve created a list of things to do, you may not know exactly where to start. Here are a few tips to help point you in the right direction:

Curb appeal is everything. Make sure all your hedges are trimmed, weed-eating is impeccable and the grass is mowed. Put a coat of fresh paint on your front door, clean those spider webs off the porch, freshen the mulch and add a bit of color. Let your neighbors know you’re holding an open house. Perhaps they’ll want to help by tidying up their own yard to help the whole cul-de-sac make a good impression.Less is more. Consider taking at least one piece of furniture out of every room. This makes your rooms look larger, and allows the viewer to better picture what their furniture would look like instead of trying to see around three extra end tables.Pack it up. Box up at least half of the things in your closets, cabinets, and cupboards. People look. And since storage is one of the foremost things on people’s minds, making it appear that you have tons of it is always a good idea. This goes for your attic and garage, as well. Make sure everything is labeled, stacked, and organized. Better yet, relocate them to a local storage unit for safe keeping.A clean kitchen is in short order. Kitchens and bathrooms are the hardest to keep clean, and by far the most important to be sparkling and ready to pass inspection. A kitchen can make or break a sale, so keep dishes out of the sink, clean the grout between your tile, and make sure the pantry is organized and clean.De-clutter. Maybe removing some furniture pieces made the house feel more open and airy, and you have cleaned every surface to mirror-like perfection, but there’s another step that makes a big difference. You have to take your feelings out of the house, physically and mentally. Take down the framed photos, movie posters, and children’s artwork, box up the mementos, and take your “personal” touch out of the home. This can make it easier for a potential buyer to imagine themselves living there.Finally… Let there be light. Light and bright houses show better… and just feel better. Just before you take those photos, have a showing or greet the first open house guest, turn on every light you have. That means overhead lighting, closet lights, lamps, the garage light, under cabinet or ambient lighting… everything. If you have a nice sound system, put on soft music. Make them feel at home.

When you are listing your house, these things are important all the time, not just that one Sunday afternoon you set aside. Dedicate yourself, spend the time, touch up some wall paint, and get ready because if you do your job right, you just might be moving soon.

Murfreesboro Hot Rods Cruise-in for the Summer!

If you are looking for a fun, free family oriented event for the summer nights south of town, the Murfreesboro Hot Rod Club Cruise-in Nights are in full swing every Friday night until the first Friday of October. The Hot Rod Club was born in 2001 to a man, an empty parking lot and his love of cars. Since the inception of Cruise-in Nights, the number of cars participating ranges from 100 to almost 700 cars, depending on location. You can find everything here, from 1987 Monte Carlo Coupes to 1964 Corvair Convertibles. These lovingly restored and showcased beauties are on display for free, and the selection changes every Friday!

Participants are asked to donate $1.00 per vehicle, back into their first come-first serve spot, and bask in the glow of the adoring roadies! Located at The Avenue Murfreesboro, at 2615 Medical Center Parkway, the spectacle begins at 5 p.m. Open to all makes and models, you never know what you are going to encounter on the blacktop… so get there early, grab your cameras and be prepared to talk shop! Whether you are there to show off your four-wheeled baby, or simply marvel at the chrome, there is always something there to cause your tachometer to redline.

Fontanel Mansion - not just another home tour!

Union Station Hotel - Beauty in the details

Deep in the heart of downtown Nashville, adjacent to the Frist, is another example of architecture at its historic finest. A destination the allows the visitor to travel back in time 100 years as soon as they step through the heavy walnut doors, the Union Station Hotel is a testament to the glory days of Nashville during the railroad boom. Construction began in 1898 and the Gothic towers and turrets still pierce the air over Broadway Ave. on one of Nashville’s most romantic getaway locations. Rededicated as a hotel in 1986 and undergoing an $11 million renovation, the Union Station is a popular spot for local lovebirds, travelling architect enthusiasts, and has provided the backdrop for some absolutely spectacular weddings.

If you aren’t caught in the romance of it all, perhaps a pint might catch your interest. As in a pint of your choosing among the 240+ unique beers offered at the Nashville location of The Flying Saucer, just off the side of the Union Station Hotel. Live music, great food and a beer club await the more adventurous patrons of the hotel. Or perhaps you desire a fine steak, a glass of wine and more polished atmosphere in which to dine. The Frist Center for Visual Arts

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts is both an art museum and an historical monument. Originally constructed in 1933 and adjacent to the Union Station, this former Post Office is a testament to the Art Deco construction style. Geometric patterns, iron décor, marble and soaring spaces define this building as a piece of art all on its own. In 1986 a new, more modern postal facility was opened and the beautiful building was left almost entirely vacant. Luckily, the Frist Foundation took an interest and in 2001 the newly renovated and repurposed building opened its doors to educate Nashvillians in the arts.

Not your typical museum, the Frist is classified as a “non-collecting” museum. This means that the collections are always rotating, offering an eclectic mix of traditional, abstract, installation and ceramic art. Oil paintings from Masters such as Monet will grace the walls one week, and be followed by an abstract sculpture installation from Boaz Vaadia. You never know what you are going to see in these long standing walls, making an annual pass a sound investment.

A café is on the premises to keep you hydrated during your musings, and the fabulous Martin ArtQuest Gallery is an interactive space geared towards hands on education in media of all sorts including painting, photography and print making. These stations are also changed on a regular basis so the learning never gets stale. It’s a perfect place to bring your family during the scorching summer days. Did we mention visitors 18 and under are free! So whether you are visiting to see the art, play in the air conditioning, shop at the fantastic gift shop, or admire the beautiful edifices of this majestic building, The Frist Center will always measure up.

Beat the heat and stay safe Nashville!

If you are on any type of social media network you know it’s been incredibly hot outside… or if you stepped out your front door at all. Either way, we have broken records already this year for recorded highs, droughts are on the news, burn bans surround us this holiday week and the mercury keeps on rising. In order to help you stay safe this time of year, it isn’t just about “point the fireworks away from your face.” It’s about how to deal with the heat and keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy in the sun.

When the temperature is reaching extreme highs like we are currently experiencing it is common sense to stay hydrated. However, if you are taking part in any type of outdoor activity it is recommended you drink 2-4 glasses of 8 oz. fluids per hour. That means four hours at the water park equals a minimum of eight glasses of fluids just while you are there! Not easy to do, but it is extremely important. The good news is that doesn’t mean just water. Any fruit flavored or carbonated beverage will do the trick. But remember, alcohol and caffeinated drinks are a no-no.

Don’t leave children or pets in your vehicle at all during this time of year. One study done shows a car heating up to 123 degrees inside in 60 minutes when it was just 80 out! It only takes 2 minutes for a car to go from an air conditioned comfort zone to a dangerously hot 93 degrees inside and cracked windows are proven to be ineffective in regulating rapidly escalating temperatures. Dark interiors have been known to reach almost 200 degrees inside, which is no place to leave a person or an animal!

Finally, if you don’t have air conditioning or it just doesn’t cut it on days like we’ve had lately, leave your home and head to the mall, go out to eat, or hit the community rec center. Sometimes it seems safer to stay indoors in the comfort of your own home, but if it isn’t comfortable you are probably better off going somewhere else to cool off during the hottest part of the day. Extreme heat is the number one cause of weather related deaths. So stay smart, stay cool, and stay safe. And keep the fireworks pointed away from your face.

Let Freedom Sing in 2012!

Downtown Nashville is taking the Fourth to a whole new level on the brand new Riverfront Lawn by stretching it out for two days at the “Let Freedom Sing” 4th of July celebration. Beginning 2 p.m. on the 3rd with live music and fireworks both days, there is no better way to celebrate independence than being crowded into an open air area with hundreds of your fellow citizens. The Family Fun Zone opens at noon on the 4th to help you keep the kids occupied until the grand finale, providing misting stations to help you cool down and hot food to whet your appetite.

Two different stages will be playing live music, with the Main stage taking center stage at 6:30 on the 4th. Sarah Darling and Craig Morgan will serenade and the Nashville Symphony will usher in the fabulous Nashville Fireworks. Set up and performed by Pyroshows last year’s display featured over 39,000 individual fireworks, including the “big shells,” fireworks the size of basketballs that reach the height of the Eiffel Tower. A spectacular performance is guaranteed since they are planning to outdo themselves this year.

Pack a backpack, bring a blanket and some cushions and get there early to get a piece of the lawn to call your own and prepare to be amazed and entertained by some great music, the Nashville Symphony, and some fabulous fireworks. “Family size” coolers aren’t allowed but some insulated bags might be a great idea in the heat. Don’t forget the sunscreen and stay awhile!

"Nashville" nights get hotter on ABC!

Middle Tennessee has received plenty of recognition on national television. Between the Food Network, the Travel Channel, The Grand Ole Opry broadcasts and features too numerous to list here, there has never been a shortage of television exposure for this local slice of Dixie heaven we call home. Now we’ve reached a new level of love and recognition by having our local music scene (or a producer’s version of it) featured on a soap opera slotted to premier this fall on ABC.

The country music capital of the world is now the setting for Nashville, a reality-style showcase of the inner workings of the make-it or break-it business of country music. This upcoming show features new Nashville resident, Hayden Panettiere (Heroes) as the Taylor-esque teen queen breaking into the scene, and Connie Britton (American Horror Story) as the long standing success struggling to find her place in the changing times. The two are forced to pair up or get out. Nashville also features Rachel Bradshaw in her first breakout role, who’s beauty matches her talent. And if Bradshaw sounds familiar, maybe you remember her dad, Terry Bradshaw, Fox Sports star, guaranteed to steal a scene or two when he pops up on the set.

Plenty of talent, emotion, drama and style fill the screen in this locally filmed soap. And no matter what successes we see from this show, we all know how much fun it is to see our hometown fill the television screen and we get to say “I was there just last night.” The country already knows about Nashville… so, let’s show the country what country is all about!

Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman

Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman are back in business June 21st for a six week run of entertainment at the “Mother church of country music.” Known as the birthplace of bluegrass since Earl Scruggs took the stage in 1945 and guitar picked his way to national renown it is only fitting that the Bluegrass Nights are hosted here, under the lights that have shined on so many others.

The next six Thursdays will feature bluegrass greats, beginning the 21st with none other than Vince Gill, winner of 20 Grammys, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, local Nashvillian, and a pretty big Predators fan. A 2012 Series pass is available to gain entrance to all six shows, so you can make sure you don’t miss any of the down home fun.

Featuring artists like The Gibson Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers and The Roys and a finale performance by Ricky Skaggs on July 26th Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman revisits the night, 65 years ago a young man and his five string banjo broke the rules and started it all.

Every Saturday during the month of June the Musician’s Corner sets up their acoustic stage on the perfectly manicured greens of Centennial Park, located on West End. Completely free and completely family friendly this seasonal event brings local and national artists away from the crowds, the concrete, and the neon lights and back out to nature, families, and wholesome fun. With things like “Kidsville,” an outdoor activity center for children that features weekly activities, mascot appearances, balloons and freebies any family would feel good about gathering on the lawn for some country music entertainment and the "Dog of the Day" contest.

A mobile food court is available at the site each Saturday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m, and a beer and wine garden opens at 2 p.m. (age restricted of course), so you can get a nutritious meal between free activities. Or a hot dog, whichever seems more appropriate.

This Saturday, June 9th Bo Bice, an American Idol contestant who came in second to Carrie Underwood on the fourth season of the show, is taking the Main Stage along with singer/songwriter Heather Morgan. The Musician’s Corner offers free American Idol performances, free family activities, free photo opportunities, and free memories are all guaranteed at the lawn party Mayor Karl Dean says is “destined to become one of Nashville’s favorite entertainment sites.”

41st CMA Fan Fair!

Downtown Nashville is donning the cowboy boots and gallon hats a little early this week as it gears up for the four day country music experience of the year. The 41st CMA Fan Fair begins officially tomorrow, June 7th and continues on through Sunday. Five different stages, acoustic performances, personalized line-ups and high-energy star-packed shows will cover the downtown area from the Riverfront to LP Field.

With artists like Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Zac Brown Band, and Brad Paisley taking the stage, the star power will be at full voltage on the green at LP Field, and that’s just the first day! Featuring performances, meet and greets, and autograph sessions from over 400 artists and celebrities, the four day pass will guarantee access to non-stop country music entertainment.

First Annual Nashville Crawfish Boil

It feels hot enough outside to be in New Orleans, so you might as well be able to eat like you are on the bayou! This Saturday, June 2nd is the First Annual Nashville Crawfish Boil. Admission to this high energy Deep South jazz fest includes all you can eat crawfish, corn, and boiled potatoes seasoned with just enough Louisiana flair to tickle your taste buds into submission. And for those of you 21 and up with just a little extra cash in your pocket you can purchase a ticket that includes bottomless beer. That being said, this is an all ages event, and the little ones 12 and under only cost $15.00! Their ticket includes bottomless soft-drinks, which doesn’t necessitate a wristband.

Located at the previously lauded Nashville Farmer’s Market and going strong all night long (well, from 4pm till 10pm to be exact) the Gulf comes to you. All proceeds from this event go to benefit Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting active duty or wounded veterans and their families. Changing the world... one diploma at a time

As May draws to a close and thermometers soar in Middle Tennessee the joy and anticipation of graduation touches everything. End caps in stores filled with gifts, cards in every aisle, balloons and picture frames galore, all these things serve as a reminder of the gratitude one must show to these achievers. Most of us remember what it was like to be the little fish in the big pond, and how terrifying it was to receive that diploma and think “what next?”

Tom Brokaw was quoted as saying “You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.” The power in that piece of paper is infinite, and can determine the course of a person’s potential. So take the time to congratulate someone you know that made it through trials, the studies, the projects, and tests (both educational and in learning life) and came through with a cap, a gown, and a smile. Take pride in knowing these people are educated, and it is in those hands the future of our world lies.

Accomplishments come and go in our lives, and the acknowledgement tends to become less and less as we get older. So this May, as summer begins and children leave the nest to see if they can fly, teach them a valuable lesson: you are never too old to wear a silly hat and have a picture taken with those that are immeasurably proud of you.

Travel and Leisure in our Backyard!

As Memorial Day weekend draws near and the end of the school year is celebrated by children and parents alike, a featured article in the Tennessean caught our eye… while staring in disbelief at the weather forecast. Just in time to provide a destination for all those people looking for something to do on this surprisingly hot and humid upcoming weekend, Tennessee State Parks is opening the gates on the 54th state park, located in Cookeville, Cummins Falls State Park.

Purchased at auction and saved from developers, this 200 acre parcel of land is in the process of being developed for easier access, safer enjoyment, and more opportunities to showcase the stunning 75 foot cascading wall of water that gives the park its name. Cummins Falls was even featured in Travel and Leisure’s listing of the “Top 10 Swimming Holes in the Country.” It’s about time we are known for something other than our food!

While still lacking in basic amenities, the park was immediately christened so people wouldn’t lose any opportunity to view the stunning waterworks that surge into the deep cool pool below. The swimming hole isn’t easy access, so make sure to wear a great pair of hiking shoes along with your swimwear if you plan on taking a dip. Caution and dedication will provide you with an opportunity to cross “visiting a place listed in Travel and Leisure Magazine” off your bucket list.

The Future of Franklin Looks Bright!

There are some exciting changes happening on Main Street this fall. The visitor center is getting a much nicer, newer, and larger location to help with tourism and education on all that Franklin has to offer when the popular boutique Emmaline moves to a currently empty location. Plenty of vying went on for the desirable spot at 400 W Main St. and the move freed up space for the Visitor Center to relocate and consolidate. Both moves are scheduled to be completed by mid-August.

Rumors also abound as City Hall seeks a possible solution to the shopping mall deterioration that has been plaguing the current location for years. Re-zoning for a 4.27 acre plot of land to a “mixed-use” designation has stirred up the interest of an un-named boutique hotel looking to build a 90 to 100 room hotel on the land. The purchase of the land would go towards previously planned rebuilding of the current City Hall location, which has been put on hold due to the economic clime. A hotel within walking distance of Franklin’s desirable downtown destinations has become more inquired about as the city grows and tourist trade climbs.

Nothing is finalized yet but the possibilities are endless! Even in today's unstable economy growth is possible and it seems real-estate once again proves that land is the investment that keeps giving back to the community.

Juleps and Jockeys

To follow in the hoof-prints of the Steeplechase we felt the need to call attention to the Kentucky Derby, which was held May 5th. The 138th annual Derby was won by “I’ll Have Another” and celebrated in style. For those that couldn’t attend the race at Churchill Downs Derby parties were scattered all across Middle Tennessee, bringing this “Dress to Impress” horse race to our midst.

Juleps and Jockeys was one such gathering, held the day of the race at the Carnton Plantation. The beautiful plantation home which was constructed in 1826 by former Mayor Randal McGavock and the site of one of the most devastating battles of the Civil war in 1864 hosted this much livelier event to raise funds for the Battle Trust. The lawns were filled with laughter, hats, and variations on the Mint Juleps that have come to be associated so closely with the famous horse race.

Representing Bob Parks Realty Mary Catherin McAnulty from the Franklin office was pictured in the Tennessean enjoying the festivities and sporting green. Perhaps a fashion nod both to Spring and the drink of the day? Juleps and Jockeys was just another example of Nashville’s ability to bring the Southern flair and festivities to your backyard.

71st Annual Iroquois Steeplechase

The Iroquois Steeplechase has been creating southern tradition for 71 years now. An opportunity to gather with friends, dress in your Sunday finest, and wear a hat that would make a Middleton blush is never something to be ignored and the Steeplechase continued to provide that outlet this year. This past weekend, May 12th the cream of the equine crop gathered to run the course, rain or shine.

Built in 1936 the Iroquois Steeplechase grounds host an annual average of 25,000 people for the races, with a portion of the proceeds going to fund the Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s hospital. Since the inception of the donation proceedings in 1981 more than $9 million dollars has been donated to the venerable children’s hospital located on the Vanderbilt Campus.

Gail Wallin Johnson, one of our own brokers here at Bob Parks Realty, was among the revelers at Saturday’s race, enjoying the festivities and sporting her own fabulous hat. The race has become just as much a fashion show as a showcase for thoroughbreds, and Nashville was out in true Southern style. A fabulous day with fine friends, wedges, hats, dresses, wine and horses… Why not mark it down for next year?

Run for the Homeless 5K

Saturday May 12th the Key Alliance is stepping up and stepping out to host the 2nd Annual Run for the Homeless 5K. “Partnering with the Metropolitan Homelessness Commission to help implement permanent solutions to homelessness,” the Key Alliance brings attention to the problem of homelessness in the heart of our city, and through fund raising and business affiliation does its part to fight the blight.

Registration and check in begins at 6:30 a.m. at the Hall of Fame Park, with the actual race commencing at 8am. An awards ceremony and free entertainment will follow, with Southwest once again providing the prizes for the top four winners: Round trip airline tickets to anywhere in the US. Perhaps a free flight to a destination of your choosing will give you the best opportunity to rest those feet that helped fight for a good cause.

All proceeds from the run will benefit the Key Alliance’s housing initiative, Housing First. A proven solution to homelessness that brings case-management into direct correlation with accountability, you don’t have to wonder where your donations are going. Helping to get the most vulnerable off the streets and into homes is a venerable mission, and you can do your part this weekend, May 12th. The Key Alliance states “Housing is a basic human right” as one of the core values of the program. In today’s economic climate, we all take the ability to obtain that right a little less for granted every day. Cinco De Mayo in the 'Ville!

As entertaining as all this International Star Wars “May the 4th be with you” stuff is, let us refocus on all the fantastic events that are actually taking place right here in Nashville this weekend.

Tomorrow May 5th is Cinco De Mayo and Nashville will be gearing up to celebrate in style. Start the day off right with the “I Run for the Party” 5K at Music Row and Demonbreun with an after party at the Tin Roof with a complimentary margarita to follow. The First Saturday Art Crawl is going on with shuttles to keep those margaritas from doing too much damage. There is a “Cinco De Mayo After Crawl” at the Brick Factory, featuring live music, free beer, and more margaritas that commences at 5:00pm with a DIY piñata class. Sips N Strokes will be celebrating Cinco De Mayo with a Margarita Painting session and an open session in the evening, with free gourmet Mexican Popsicles from Las Paletas. We aren’t sure what those are… but they might involve margaritas too!

If you need more family friendly activities to start off the day the Renaissance Festival begins this weekend, and Mayor’s Track and Field Day takes place at LP Stadium beginning at 9am the 5th.

This weekend is many things, the first weekend of May, Cinco De Mayo, International Star Wars day… but in reality it is just another great day to live and play in Nashville TN!

Come on y'all.... The rodeo is back in town!

Welcome to the south… where country twangs a little longer, “y’all” has three or more syllables and the rodeo comes to town. May 17th, 18th, and 19th at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. the roughest, toughest cowboys come out to test their skills as they pair up against barrels, bareback stallions, steers and the occasional calf in the Franklin Rodeo.

Historic downtown Franklin once again takes center stage on the 17th when the parade brings funny cars, rodeo clowns and no political agendas to the streets. The Franklin office of Bob Parks Realty has even signed up to participate in a window decorating contest judged by the O’More College of Design on the 16th. The office theme of “Gunsmoke” will do its part to make the rodeo participants feel their old west selves.

The Franklin Rodeo also does its part to include the tiny rodeo goers. Mutton Bustin’ is an opportunity for the little tykes to try their hand at ropin’… sheep. A little less terrifying for mom and dad and a whole lot of fun for them! If you didn’t get selected to bring down some Mutton the Calf Scramble gives everyone else a chance to get in the ring, with three lucky calves sporting ribbons on their tails. The mini Cowboy (or Cowgirl) that gets their mitts on the ribbon wins!

So whether it’s cross-dressing rodeo clowns, tiny cars, bucking broncos, flying ropes or scrambling kids that draws you in, the Franklin Rodeo has a little something for the whole family. And even if it’s just to see some Cowboys in those hats and chaps… well that’s worth the price of admission too.

Huzzah! The Renaissance Festival is here again!

Huzzah! It’s that time again. Every weekend in the month of May, Renaissance madness descends upon the citizens of middle Tennessee. Life size pawns, rooks, kings and queens move across backyard sized chess boards. Hawks gaze down over the crowd in search of prey. And wenches mix with noblewomen as they all walk the dirt trails that wind through the spectacular woodland setting of the Renaissance Festival.

Arrington, TN comes alive during this month long glimpse into the everyday life of 16th Century England residents. Theme weekends help you decide which weekend you will attend, with opening weekend being Family Discount Weekend. With the purchase of two adult admissions, tickets for two grandparents and all children under 12 years old are free. The third weekend is Pirate weekend, a perfect excuse to dress up in your favorite Halloween costume in May. Don’t worry, you won’t be alone if you come in any type of Renaissance garb. You’ll see everything from leather vests to intricate noble gowns.

Over 60 artisan booths will peddle wares from local vendors, from costumes to candles… handbags to bows and arrows… and lots of handmade jewelry. Food booths bring the open air market feeling, with smells of turkey legs and sausages wafting along the spring breeze. You won’t want to miss these magicians perform, wenches throw dirty water, and knights joust.

29th Annual Main St Festival, Franklin TN

For the past 28 years historic downtown Franklin TN has brought life, art, music, and fellowship to the streets for the Main Street festival. This weekend, April 28th and 29th, the 29th Annual Main Street Festival will once again wake the citizens of this quaint but booming town and bring them milling amongst tents, booths, and stages.

An estimated 100,000 visitors are expected to descend on downtown Franklin, viewing over 200 local artisan entries, sampling international fares from over 20 food vendors, and dancing in the streets to ongoing live entertainment. A full scale carnival will be open at the future site of the Franklin Bicentennial Park bringing screams of joy and peals of laughter into the musical mix, multiple stages have line-ups that never end, and did we mention the food?

Spring into Action and Help Save Lives.

Every two seconds a person in the United States needs blood, which means by the time you finish this sentence at least two people will need a transfusion. May 2nd Bob Parks Realty is doing their part by hosting a blood drive from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the Red Cross Bus, a mobile life-saving unit used to bring the donation process to the doorstep of the volunteers. Parked outside the Brentwood office at 8119 Isabella Lane, the American Red Cross comes to you.

Over 80% of all donations made to the American Red Cross are collected in mobile set ups such as this one, the ones you see in the high school gym, or the church activity center. Thousands of lives are saved on a daily basis because volunteers for the Red Cross set up these drives for local sponsors, bringing the knowledge and freedom to decide to help a stranger a little closer to communities and workplaces. Many people are afraid of needles or talk themselves out of going to a center to donate, but these mobile units allow you to surround yourself with neighbors, friends and coworkers giving you the extra boost in confidence many of us need.

13th Annual Ragin' Cajun Crawfish Boil!

On the East bank of the Cumberland River from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. April 21st Nashville welcomes back a little Cajun into the country music capitol of the world for the 13th Annual Ragin’ Cajun Crawfish Boil. There will be over 3,000 lbs of fresh crawfish for your consumption, ice cold beer, live music and a single ticket gets you all day access to all of it! Did we mention it only costs $40 at the door? The only thing you need is to make sure you are fine with the idea of your dinner looking back at you.

The beautiful country duo Autumn Rose will be performing as well as Deep Machine and Tim Petty and the American Girls, a Tom Petty tribute band so there will be a little something for everyone on the Greenway this year.

The Nashville Junior Chamber is co-hosting the event with Musicians on Call, an organization founded in 1999 that brings music to the bedsides of critically ill patients unable to see live music in any other way. All the musicians are volunteers and this event will help keep the music alive for those fighting to do the same.

So come out and celebrate a beautiful spring weekend, enjoy Nashville’s talent, take in the scenery, and support the Nashville Junior Chamber, a group of young professionals “devoting themselves to the Nashville community” by providing us with music, beer, and seafood… I can’t think of a more outstanding organization!

Cumberland Park on the Riverfront

Nashville has taken a huge leap towards reclaiming the waterfront of the Cumberland River as a draw to the downtown area. Just another step forward in the aftermath of the floods the brand-new Cumberland Park, in the works since 2007 will open this Sunday at 1:30 pm.

“Cities with great waterfronts can offer a better quality of life to retain and attract citizens and capital. Nashville has the potential to create a great waterfront that is truly world-class – it is Nashville’s time.” – Nashville Riverfront Concept Plan 2007

The 11 million dollar project is just the first phase of the Riverfront revitalization project, featuring spray and rain curtains, rock climbing walls, walking trails and lounging lawns. The green initiative also shows off a cistern that will reroute, filter, and reuse the estimated 1 million gallons of storm water that will run off the park and parking lot into landscape irrigation for the park.

Annihilating the asphalt that once covered the area was the first step, removing polluted soil and bringing new dirt, over 180 trees, and 200 tons of Tennessee sandstone to create this eco friendly family oriented gathering spot. Nestled in the shadow of the Historic White Bridge Building which has also gotten a facelift and now houses public restrooms (with plans to eventually open a restaurant and concessions stand) Cumberland Park is just the first of many initiatives to make Nashville a greener and better place to live, work and play.

Opry Mills is Back in Business!

Two years after the 2010 floods left desolation and disaster in their wake, Opry Mills rises from the flood waters revitalized and better than ever. Litigation and devastation couldn’t close their doors forever and Nashville is more than happy to welcome the outlet mall back!

The Grand Re-opening started Thursday, March 29th, successfully flooding the halls with shoppers instead of murky waters. The festivities will continue on through the first weekend in May and include concerts, deep discount shopping weekends, and fireworks.

With shopping destinations such as Bass Pro Shops, Vera Bradley, Coach Factory Store, Children’s Place Outlet, and rue21 the whole family has a shop catering to their individual needs. The Aquarium Restaurant is back in business and Dave & Buster’s still offers the family fun and food to keep everyone happy. In addition the IMAX screen is back! The Regal 27 is back with bigger screens, better sound, and reclining seats.

The Finale weekend will culminate on May 5th with a free concert beginning at 6pm featuring the winner of Opry Mills Next Big Star talent search and Josh Turner, the country music heart-throb that carried us all away on his “Long Black Train.” Fireworks will seal the deal as Nashville welcome back the destination mall that has it all with open arms and a big Country “We sure are glad y’all are back!”

TPAC is bringing the Big Apple to Nashville this theater season with a run of Broadway musicals sure to get your heels tapping, your laughter laughing and your applause ringing off the rafters. Offering a little bit of everything from racy sea-faring fun to the circle of life the Broadway at TPAC 2012-2013 season will have something for everyone.

Beginning in October of 2012 with “Anything Goes” TPAC takes to the seas with a love-story aboard the S.S. America with sultry singing sailors and blackmail on the high seas. Followed in November by Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” Nashville gets put into the giving season early with a tale of “Two showbiz buddies putting on a show in a magical Vermont inn and finding their perfect mates in the bargain.”

Ringing in the 2013 New Year “Catch Me if You Can” plays in January and is based on the Dreamworks film featuring Leonardo DiCaprio which was also based on true events, where a teenage boy forges millions of dollars in checks, travels the world, and evades the law in a cat and mouse game where charm and good looks will get you anything.

This is just a taste of what the Broadway Season at TPAC has to offer, and with so many Tony Award winning musicals coming to our fair city maybe a season pass is in order. Fighting Obesity with Football and Fun!

Did you know that Tennessee has the fourth highest childhood obesity rate in the entire nation? With just shy of 40% of Nashville’s youth classifying as overweight or obese, the mayor has taken action. After the enormous success of Mayor Karl Dean’s 2011 Healthy Living campaigns he has decided to bring things to our own turf in the fight against childhood obesity. May 5th will be the first “Mayor’s Field Day with the Tennessee Titans.”

Held on the field of LP Stadium this full day of tournament-type track and field activities will help you teach your little football fans to be healthy, active, and conscious of the decisions they will be faced with in their own battle for nutritional touchdowns. Beginning at 9 a.m, teams of 10 will participate in events, live entertainment will be provided and an awards ceremony will be held to acknowledge the successes of the day.

The decision to be healthy all-stars starts at home, and teaching good nutrition and physical fitness at an early age are the most important components to a good game plan. All children ages 5 and up are encouraged to participate and individuals or groups can register online now.

Gray's on Main - New Life to Downtown Franklin

The Gray Drug Building has stood sentry on Main Street in historic downtown Franklin since the turn of the century. The early 1900’s saw the building’s inception, and over a hundred years later the store still stands, and the iconic neon sign still watches the flow of traffic as it overhangs the sidewalk.

Recently purchased by Andy Marshall, a local entrepreneur also responsible for Puckett’s Grocery and Restaurant which was mentioned in our V-Day blog just last month, the landmark building at 322 Main Street stands to be completely refurbished and reopened as a dining and music venue. Gray’s on Main will bring the down-home back to the downtown with “shared plate” dining styles, seafood from the Carolinas and local talent to the stage. All three floors of the historic building will be dedicated to bringing life and style back into the 100-year old walls. And from the sounds of it, if walls could talk, these ancient edifices will have even more to say after the doors of Gray’s on Main open this fall.

Those familiar with the easy at-home feelings elicited by the old-fashioned style of downtown Franklin can rest assured, Marshall plans to keep the vibe “lively with ‘components of fine dining’ in a casual setting.” And hopefully that well known and long recognized neon sign will continue to point the way to a destination on Main.

Cherry Blossom Festival

In 1912, Japan gifted over 3,000 Cherry Blossom Trees to Washington DC to commemorate and celebrate the growing friendship between Japan and the US. Lining the Tidal Basin and overlooking Potomac Park these Cherry Blossom trees have showered their blooms in celebration of peace and partnership for 100 years. The Centennial of the Gift of Trees is recognized by Japan-American Society of Tennessee and will be observed tomorrow during the Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival.

From 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. tomorrow, March 24th in the Public Square at Metro Courthouse the Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival brings all things Japanese to Middle Tennessee. Bonsai, Kimono, and ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) are just a few of the workshops offered. An exploration into Manga and Anime gives a sneak peek into the cosplay side of American-Japanese culture with a costume contest, and a walk from 9 a.m. till 10 a.m. gives 2.5 miles of support and hope for the continued goodwill of our two countries.

The cherry blossom has been associated with the transient nature of life and mortality for centuries, the quick startling beauty of the blooms and the rapid loss of those gorgeous flowers a natural commentary on the fleeting aspect of life. Make sure to take notice of the beauty of spring around you, admire the flowers that fill the air, and rejoice in the life and ongoing cycle of all things beautiful and young. The cherry blossom is just the beginning of the blossoming beauty of spring.

Growing wardrobes for shrinking budgets

Most mothers struggle with the rate in which their precious little ones outgrow their clothes. By the time summer comes around the shorts and t-shirts from last year look like doll clothes when you hold them up to your grinning little one. And those are just the ones that survived. Tiny humans are hard on their clothes (some worse than others) leaving those items that might still fit far too stained or torn to be worn in public. Trash bags and Rubbermaid bins are filled with cast offs and we try to figure out in today’s tight budgets how on earth we are supposed to replace an entire wardrobe every single time the season changes.

Nashville boasts a huge variety of consignment stores and sales. Most counties such as Robertson, Dickerson, and Wilson will have three or four consignment sales twice a year, accommodating those growing children of ours and those tightening purse strings. Oftentimes, these sales will take place in warehouses or church gyms, offering thousands of square feet of gently used and inspected items for both boys and girls. Encores and More of Robertson County had to upgrade its space several times in the past few years, being flooded with participants and shoppers. Most sales will even offer half price days to help clear out inventory, giving those of you that might just need one or two more pairs of pants a better chance at a better deal.

There are several websites available such as www.kidsconsignmentsales.com and www.consignmentmommies.com that allow thrifty moms to keep track of sale dates. Email lists are often available, as well as postcard reminders the old fashioned way. Shopping these sales isn’t the only savvy way to clothe your children in today’s economy. Selling all those items your children have outgrown brings in much larger amounts than yard sales and leftover items can be marked for donation which is a huge tax write off. Many families need these sales, either for the money, for the clothes, or for both. Participating is a cost-effective way to give back to the community and maybe earn a little for yourself in the process.

"Dixie Alley" - Tornados in Tennessee

Tornado season is upon us. Middle Tennessee has seen its share of tornados with an average of 12-15 classified tornadoes touching down per year. National Weather Service data “indicated a total of 421 people died in a total of 486 tornadoes since 1830” in middle Tennessee alone. Areas of high population density, a large number of trailer homes, and the tornado’s propensity for touching down in the middle of the night make the areas particularly dangerous. Recently nicknamed “Dixie Alley,” the area’s growth and success means more population, making education on what to do during a tornado vital.

A plan is the most important thing to have during severe weather. Know the safest place to go in your home. A small room or closet is the best as they are less prone to collapse. Stay away from windows and stick to the center of your home. If a windowless room is not available, take cover in the bathtub and cover yourself with the heaviest blanket you have to protect yourself from debris. An emergency kit should already be assembled and kept in the designated area. A first aid kit (including any essential medications such as inhalers or heart medications), bottled water, non perishable canned foods and a hand can-opener, a battery operated radio and extra batteries, a flashlight, and cash are some great things to keep in it. Another good idea is a disposable camera to take photos of damage, matches, and a list of important phone numbers you might not know by heart because you had everything saved in your phone that died during the storm and your power is out.

Make sure you wait until the weather stations say your area is clear before you leave your storm shelter. Check on your neighbors and make sure everyone is alright. Even if an actual funnel doesn’t touchdown high winds, hail, and torrential rain associated with tornado producing storms can cause an impressive amount of damage. Document any damage immediately so you can report it to your homeowner’s insurance agency.

Stay smart. A warning means one has been sighted and you should take cover. Don’t ever run outside to take photos with your cell. Trailers are never ever safe, and don’t run upstairs. Common sense and a little planning will keep you and your loved ones safe and sound during tornado season.

Watching the Oscars is a guilty pleasure for so many of us. The gowns, the drama, the underdog winners...everything we love to hate about the movie industry. Now Williamson County is bringing the red carpet to your own door with the Legacy Ball 2012, A Night at the Oscars, being held on March 3rd, at 6 p.m. at the Embassy Suites at Cool Springs. A night of glamour, entertainment, gourmet dinners, and artistic flair awaits as you celebrate your own night of the Oscars. All funds from this glitzy evening go to Williamson County Child Advocacy Center.

The WCCAC is an organization set in place to “combat child abuse by coordinating services to child abuse victims and their families in crisis and providing community education focused on prevention and early intervention" This group works to protect the children who are victims of severe physical or sexual abuse and are dedicated to making sure a child’s voice is both “heard and respected.” They need our support.

A wine reception and silent auction proceed the catered dinner and Heidi Schwartz will be there again this year to capture the ambience of the evening on canvas. Schwartz is a local artist from Ohio who came to study music at Belmont and became a performance artist of a different type. Her entire work is completed during the event and auctioned at its conclusion. Her lively work and highly energized self is the perfect complement to the grace and beauty that sets the stage of this event. So get dressed up and come to Franklin 6 p.m. on Saturday March 3rd to support a cause, revel in beauty, and talk about everyone else’s outfit. Because we all do it… admit it.

Cups of Co-opportunity

This Saturday, February 25th at 7:00 a.m. local artists are climbing out of bed early and brewing coffee at the Clay Lady’s Studio on Lebanon Pike. Okay, they aren’t brewing the coffee themselves. Bongo Java has agreed to provide the brew and the artists of the Clay Lady’s Co-op have agreed to provide the cups with “Cups of Co-Opportunity.”

Raising funds for the get VSA of Tennessee, these local artists are donating their time and their talents to make sure the arts are available for everyone, even those with disabilities. VSA stands for “Vision. Strength. Artistic Expression.” This non-profit volunteer organization does its best to provide “people with disabilities opportunities to participate in, learn through, and enjoy the arts.” Funded by an award from the US Department of Education and donations from volunteers the Clay Lady Co-op is helping these special students make sure their cup stays half full.

Your donation will purchase you a keepsake, handmade, completely original coffee mug made by a plethora of participating artists like Claudio Belle Marie Overstreet (pictured in front of an installation at the Co-op). Fill your unique mug with Bongo Java’s specialty brews and then take the opportunity to browse the studios of the Co-op and visit with the artists. Galleries will be open for viewing and board games will be set up for a little healthy competition. Make some time Saturday morning between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and head down to 1416 Lebanon Pike, Nashville. Free Admission to the Country Music Hall of Fame

Tomorrow, February 4th is the Fifth annual Free Admission Day at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. If the word “Free” isn’t enough to get you downtown, the list of events for the day might help out. Hunter Hayes, whose top 15 hit “Storm Warning” will be performing and signing autographs. If you don’t know who Hayes is, ask any pre-teen girl. The 21 year old country music heartthrob has been performing since the age of 4, and wrote his first song at the age of 6. He moved to the Country Music Capitol of the World three years ago. The Oak Ridge Boys will also be signing autographs. With events for the kids such as hands on musical instruction as well as free admission to the museum this is a perfect opportunity to expose your family to the roots of that which we Nashville Natives are so known for: Country Music.

Open from 9am to 5pm the Country Music Hall of Fame has been gathering iconic memorabilia from the lives of Country Music stars since 1967. The visually stunning $37 million dollar building that currently houses the accredited collection was dedicated in May of 2001 and sits just steps away from the historic Ryman Theater and the honky-tonks of Broadway. All these landmarks have helped generate millions of dollars of revenue for the City of Nashville, provided down-home attractions for tourists, and a reminder to never forget what makes this great city of ours so well known.

Hunter Hayes will be performing at 2pm. The Oak Ridge Boys and Hunter Hayes will be signing autographs at 3pm. And maybe the host of the show is Guy Fieri, the showboating cooking personality we all know and love as the owner of the craziest hair in cuisine. That’s right, once again Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives has visited the heart of middle Tennessee to investigate unique and authentic cuisine so good it reached the ears of the Food Network.

Athens Family Restaurant offers Greek cooking like Grandma made it. If your Grandma is Greek that is. Guy Fieri showed up to investigate Chef Adel’s original creation the Bacon Lamb Burger, a “Grilled and lightly spiced ground lamb patty, strips of bacon topped with melted Swiss cheese and a pinch of crushed red pepper.” Offering up long hours to soothe the growling bellies of Nashville, including 24-hours Thursday through Saturday the staff of Athens Family Restaurant guides you on a unique, relaxed journey into the specialties of Greek Cuisine.

Since this episode of Burgers ‘n More will be airing February 13, 2012 at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT, this small seat-yourself restaurant might get a whole lot busier very soon… so it might be a good idea to take some time this weekend and explore a menu that brings a little bit of the Mediterranean right here to Nashville. Sam Davis Home - History of A Hometown Hero

Remnants of history can be found all over Middle Tennessee and Smyrna is no exception. Like a square in the patchwork quilt of this states’ history the Sam Davis Home is a piece of the Civil War that has survived the passage of time. Built in 1810 on the picturesque banks of Stewart’s Creek the Davis family home is a perfect example of plantation living in the upper middle class of the 1800’s.

The family home of Sam Davis sits on 160 acres, bought by the state of Tennessee in 1927 and opened for tours in 1930. 82 years of guided glimpses into the past have not diminished the natural beauty of the land or the home. The vast majority of items and settings you will see in the antebellum home are from the 1850’s, when the Davis family did extensive renovations to the Greek-Revival house. The original log cabin still sits on the property as well. The historically accurate living-museum showcases many original items from Sam Davis, a Civil War soldier who was captured, accused of spying, and hanged on November 27, 1863. Dubbed the “boy hero of the civil war” Sam Davis was given was last opportunity to reveal the sources of his information and escape the noose. He is said to have stated:

“I would die a thousand deaths before I would betray a friend.”

A popular spot for photographers, weddings, social functions and paranormal investigations this beautiful home does a fantastic job of paying homage to a time our country was changing so vastly it seems astonishing that a perfect example of daily life was able to be preserved. If you visit this piece of history in Smyrna, Tennessee be prepared to long for a time when life may have been harder… but sure seemed simpler.

Lynn Tede of Bob Parks Realty has been chosen as Rutherford County’s 2011 Diplomat of the Year by the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce. Dedicated to bettering the lives of Rutherford County Residents since its origination in 1982, the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce will recognize Lynn Tede at the Business at Its Best 2012 dinner and reception.

Lynn Tede has been a member of the Chamber’s Diplomat program since 2009; volunteering her time and efforts for countless hours in an attempt to give back to the community she loves to be a part of. In addition to being the agent council representative for the Bob Parks Smyrna office, Lynn also volunteers for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and is a member of the Middle Tennessee Association of Realtors public relations committee.

Kelli Beam, Director of Membership for the Chamber is proud to recognize this bustling woman, saying, “Lynn is very deserving of this award because of her dedication and ability to make others feel welcome into the Chamber's membership." Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Just another day off schools, another three day weekend, another day the mail doesn’t run. Just another day attached to a name very few people actually think about. Perhaps it bears a little reminding that Martin Luther King, Jr. wasn’t just a famous man, a pastor or a leader. He was all of these things and more. He received a doctorate from Boston University. He became a pastor when he was twenty five years old, blending together his acquired knowledge, his innate knowledge and his faith into the words and actions of a non-violent supporter of the civil rights movement.

He was a man that conferred with Presidents, led 250,000 protesters in peaceful demonstration, and headed several organizations that furthered the civil rights movements. He was the youngest man to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 when he was just 35 years old. He was a man with a dream for all races, who wanted nothing more than a place for his children “where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

He was a man who stood on a balcony April 4, 1968 enjoying the warm Spring Memphis air before he was to lead a protest supporting striking African American garbage workers where he was assassinated. He was a man killed for his passionate beliefs in freedom.

He is now a man that puts a face to the movement of equality. According to Derek Alderman of East Carolina University, as of 2006 over 730 American Cities have a street named after him. Federal Law observes his birthday as the third Monday of January, in effect since its first official observation January 20, 1986. He is still a man that stands for equality and justice and a peaceful approach to obtaining both.

He will always be a man with a dream.

Winter Wilderness Hike in Taylor Hollow

Roughly an hour northeast of downtown Nashville, in Westmoreland, is a 173 acre nature conservancy called Taylor Hollow, one of the last remaining vistas of natural wildlife, flora and fauna untouched by man in middle Tennessee. Saturday, January 21st will provide the novice nature lover a look into the topographic background of the Hollow, unencumbered by the vast amounts of wildflowers that grow in the spring and summer. Taylor Hollow Falls might even be persuaded to showcase some ice formations if the cold holds out.

Roger McCoy of the Natural Heritage Inventory Program will guide the hiking tour along established paths and off-trail in order to experience the winter landscape up close and personal. Winter hikes allow for an off-trail experience not recommended in the warmer months because so many of the rare wildflowers are easily damaged and while most people might not think of signing up for a guided tour outdoors in the dead of winter, it’s a perfect activity to experience yet another side of middle Tennessee and its vast array of beautiful protected land. Tennessee actually has 82 different natural areas protected and maintained by the state as ecological preservations.

Make sure to dress warmly, protect your extremities, and hope that this beautiful dusting of snow lasts long enough to add another dimension to your hike. History Alive and Well in Germantown

Buried in the heart of downtown Nashville a commercial and residential gem of a neighborhood breathes life back into the once notorious reputation of Jefferson Street and its surrounding area. A relatively small neighborhood, Germantown is an epic example of faith, determination, and urban revitalization in the face of imminent disaster and economic downturn.

Originally dubbed “Germantown” due to its prominent population of German immigrants and descendants, WWI began a spiral of downward developments for the close-knit community as anti-German sentiments caused residents to flee into the anonymity of the city. In the 1960’s commercial growth and Interstate systems looked to be the death of the historical neighborhood as many of the homes constructed in the mid to late 1800’s stood empty and dilapidated. Finally, in 1979 Germantown was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and renewal began in earnest.

Homes dating back as early as 1830 have been lovingly restored and protected, requiring zoning board approval, keeping the historical ambiance alive and well in the 18 square blocks. Several independently owned restaurants grace the streets, including Monell’s, a Southern Style restaurant located in a home dating back to 1880. Sporting communal tables this is a perfect example of that world famous “Southern Charm.” The Mad Platter also perches on the corner of Sixth Avenue North, a twenty year testament to perseverance and the power of fantastic food.

A Walking Tour, Pooch Parade, and Annual Oktoberfest are just a few examples of the activities that draw crowds from all over Nashville to these once again beautiful streets. So whether its home-cooked fare, family owned businesses or a varied representation of historical architecture lovingly restored to its former splendor Germantown is a perfect place to visit, live, and tell your friends about.

Culture on the Crawl, Free of Charge

It’s the first weekend of the month, the first weekend of the New Year, and time for the First Saturday Art Crawl. A budget friendly foray into the arts that occurs the first Saturday of every month, the First Saturday Art Crawl offers a chance to view local art galleries, artists, sculptures and installments free of charge. This Saturday, January 7th, a free shuttle service will loop between two stops, the Arcade (right next to Printer’s Alley) and the Tennessee Art League (808 Broadway).

Over a dozen galleries occupy the Arcade, a historical landmark in itself. Built in 1903 the Arcade was modeled after an arcade in Italy and still sports a breathtaking glass roof that spans the length of the building. The second floor of this architectural marvel is now dedicated to cubby hole art galleries showcasing some of Nashville’s own artists like Andy Anh Ha, a nationally lauded and awarded artist born and raised in Nashville, TN. His striking Asian influenced mixed media paintings are just a sampling of the stunning pieces available to view on the Art Crawl, and exhibits are rotated out on a monthly basis so you never get bored. Four other galleries, including the Rymer Gallery are also located at this stop on 5th Avenue. The second stop, The Tennessee Art League, was opened in 2005 during the revitalization of downtown, bringing three stories of local artists, sculpture, and installments to the heart of the downtown area. The third floor even offers exhibit space for “non-profit organizations, after-school programs and other community outreach projects.”

All galleries have their doors open from 6:00pm till 9:00pm, with the shuttle service running until 10:00pm. All entry to the participating galleries is free, the shuttle is free, and the wine, cookies and spiced rum punch is free (though tips and donations are appreciated). Remember, the First Saturday Art Crawl takes place the first Saturday of every month, and the opportunity to experience the cultural enrichment available to residents and tourists alike in the heart of downtown Nashville, although free, is priceless.

Zoo Run Run!

The Nashville Zoo at Grassmere will be hosting its Annual 5K run January 21, 2012. The “Zoo Run Run” course winds through 200 acres of exhibits, open grass fields, and the historic Grassmere Plantation grounds. Pre-registration is available now until January 20th, at $37.00 for Zoo members and $40.00 per non-member.

Closing to the public at 1p.m. on January 21st, check-in and late registration begins at 1:30 and the race begins at 3:00. “Race” might not be applicable to all participants, so feel free to bundle the kids up into strollers or wagons and walk, waddle, or trot along the concrete paths, letting those mysterious elephant footprints guide the way. This is the perfect opportunity to witness those exotic animals in the winter months, learn about hibernation patterns, and figure out how the Nashville Zoo keeps everyone happy and warm year round!

Costumes portraying your favorite animals are encouraged and awarded so be sure to dress warmly, gather up the family and come to Grassmere on January 21st to support your local zoo. All proceeds from this event will go directly to The Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, which has big things in the works! An interactive Dinosaur exhibit opens March 16th, so watch your step for dinosaurs exploring their new homes. Dinner is provided to participants of “Zoo Run Run” and the costume awards ceremony will be held at 4:00 p.m.

Taking Down Without Breaking Down

Organizing your holiday decorations is something none of us wants to do. It is so much easier to throw them back in the plastic bins, lug them up into the attic, and curse the existence of light strands come November next year when you drag them back out to decorate again. Some simple forethought will help save your sanity and your family’s come the following holiday season.

If you plan on keeping some decorations in the attic, some in the garage, or some under the house, make sure you have the appropriate containers. And don’t forget that some decorations shouldn’t go in the attic due to the temperature fluctuations. Candles and chocolates melt in extreme heat, as well as some of the clay or homemade ornaments. Glues also weaken if left in the attic for years on end, so when you finally go to use those ornate greeting cards you bought on clearance four years ago… chances are they might fall apart.

Once you decide which containers will hold what, look in them when you open them. Chances are you have some decorations you never use, or were given to you and you never quite liked them. Don’t keep them. This is the perfect time to purge out things you don’t use, or don’t go with a new theme you have decided to go with. When you buy new decorations on sale after Christmas day, throw away an older version of what you have. If you bought a new tablecloth… liberate the old one. Another option is donation… there are usually people who will find those strange mismatched decorations perfect.

Make sure you wrap the things that really matter the most carefully. Even those handmade decorations made with Popsicle sticks and macaroni deserve special treatment if you really want them to last. Never trust the container to protect the items properly.

Labeling the containers will save tons of time. Be specific with it, just saying “Christmas” isn’t good enough. Specify “outside decorations,” “mantle,” “tree,” etc. This will keep you from having to empty every box at once, and allow you to decorate the next year in a more orderly fashion. Generally this also allows you to know where to store the containers as well, as “outside” can go in the garage or under the house, while “mantle” can go in the attic.

Do a final walk through before you pack the boxes away. Otherwise the soap dispenser with Santa on it will never make in back into the “guest bathroom” box you probably didn’t make. And don’t forget to grab the wreath on the door you don’t use.

Stress Relief After the Holidays

Christmas is over. The wrapping paper has been bagged, the boxes dragged out to the curb, the leftovers packaged and frozen, the cookies consumed, and family from out of town is getting ready to depart. You stand in the middle of your living room and sigh. Even though you are thankful for the holidays, the loved ones, the gifts both given and received, it always seems to overwhelm all the little reasons you plan the dinners, the events, the breakfasts in the first place. Menu planning detracts from quality time. Decorating takes away from the joy of seeing a twinkling tree. Making eighteen of the same presents for your child’s class completely obliterates the joy your child experiences when they hand them out to all their friends. You look at the tree, the lights, the greenery and Santas and you vow – never again.

The holidays are stressful. No matter how much planning you do, the actual week of Christmas is mayhem. Fulfilled but exhausted you can’t even imagine taking down the tree, much less hauling it up to the attic, or unloading the dishwasher, or taking the load of laundry out of the dryer that has been in it for at least five days. In the midst of it all, you have forgotten about taking care of yourself. Here are some tips that will help you regain your equilibrium and your sanity in the wake of the holiday season:

Ask for help. All the family, friends and loved ones that have been orbiting around your house for the past week have two very valuable things: hands. Have someone do the dishes for you, or help you take down the tree. Show how very grateful you are and they will be glad they helped.Take a moment for you. Whatever quiet time you allow yourself all year round is even more important now. Curl up with a book, rent a movie, take a bath and lock the door, drink a glass of wine. Set aside the time and tell the rest of your household they will see you in two hours. Tell them to enjoy their new toys.Take everything out of its box and throw away the packing. Storing boxes for a vacuum you might sell someday, or dishes you will use everyday just clutters up your life and your garage.Do a little something you might not otherwise do. Chances are “Santa” left a little money in a stocking for you. Go get a pedicure, or buy yourself an inexpensive ring. Make sure it is something you always think “yes, I would love that… but….” And then just do it.Order take-out. The thought of cooking after everything you have eaten, prepared and packaged in the past month probably makes you want to break out in hives. Call the Chinese food restaurant just down the road and in 15 minutes you have a stress free meal you didn’t have to prepare at all. And use paper plates.If you can afford it, a massage or a spa day really does make a world of difference.

The most effective thing in recovering from the holidays is truly simply, and it’s free. Sit down and remember the faces of everyone that opened a present from you, ate a cookie, or showed up at your house to wish you a happy holiday. Think of all the cards you got or sent, the lights you saw, and the traditions you diligently preserve year after year. Sit down and look through the photos you took. The joy and happiness reflected back in the faces of those you care about should be more than enough for you to forget the stress, and think “I can’t wait till next Christmas.”

Season of Wishes

Every wish begins with a dream. And every dream has the potential of coming true.

Erin Garcia, of LaVergne, TN had one wish: to go to Disney without the stares and watchful eyes of curious strangers. Nine year old Erin has pulmonary hypertension and has to wear an oxygen mask 22 to 23 hours a day, eliciting the constant stares and whispers everywhere she goes. Bob Parks Realty partnered with the Make A Wish Foundation and sent Erin, A Make A Wish Ambassador during the Season of Wishes, to a magical place specifically designed for children just like Erin, “where there aren't any stares from people and everyone is accepted for who they are.” They stayed in the “Give Kids the World Village.”

In Kissimmee, Florida a very special man has spent his life working towards providing wish fulfillment for children that might not live long enough to see their wishes, their dreams, come true. Henri Landwirth, born in Belgium in 1927, managed to survive WWII and the Nazi death camps with his twin sister. Home for the Holidays

Neighborhoods all across middle Tennessee are ablaze with holiday light displays, festooned with poinsettias and decked with decorated pine trees. However, if your house is on the market perhaps “ablaze” and “festooned” might not be adjectives you want potential home buyers to use to describe your property. You want people to feel comfortable and energized, complacent and eager, willing to move and at home all at the same time. This is actually not as hard as it seems.

Studies show a mix of Christmas music and Christmas scents, such as pine or fresh baked goods, actually “has been shown to boost people’s attitudes in retail stores and increase their likelihood of wanting to visit them.” If that works for a store, imagine how well it would work for a potential home.

Adding touches of the traditional red Christmas décor is also a good move. The warm color palettes, primarily red, are colors that make people feel energized. A subconscious feeling of excitement is a fantastic thing in a potential buyer. Don’t go overboard on the decorations though. A good rule of thumb is for every decoration you put out, put one thing away. This alleviates clutter, which stresses the eyes and distracts from the home’s true potential. “If it is ‘cute,’ it stays packed,” says Joanne O’Donnell, president and CEO of Chic Home Interiors. Not everyone agrees on “cute” and the snowman made of seven year old macaroni might not be as appealing as you think it is.

The holidays provide an opportunity to decorate the outside of the home during a time of year that generally proves difficult to showcase curb appeal. Evergreen wreaths, poinsettias, and bows offer color and definition that is lacking when your natural greenery is slumbering. Battery operated candles in the windows immediately define the natural light sources and provide a welcoming look. But remember, too many lights outside can overwhelm a buyer at night, as well as provide unsightly tangles of wires, extension cords and timers if they drive past during the day.

This time of year is about family, friends, and home. If someone is coming into your house during these months to view it you have the perfect opportunity to show them just how loving and welcoming this house truly was. Remember all the reasons you stayed as long as you did, and pass those along to the potential buyers with heartfelt touches and holiday cheer. That feeling when you first walk in the door of a new home can’t be packaged… but maybe it can be bought. Make an offer!

Nashville's Nutcracker Opening Night

December 9, 2011 is opening night for Nashville’s Nutcracker, an original interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Ballet which was first performed in 1892. Nashville’s Nutcracker has been gracing the holiday halls of TPAC since 2008 when Paul Vasterling’s interpretation of the classic ballet was debuted. In Vasterling’s twist on the classic ballet which is based on Alexandre Dumas’ “The Tale of the Nutcracker” written in 1845, the characters attend the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition. It is here that Clara is bought The Nutcracker, the central figure of the story, by her Godfather.

The Tennessee Centennial of 1897 celebrated 100 years of Statehood and unveiled the Parthenon, a full scale replica of the Parthenon in ancient Greece, which centered around a 42 foot statue of Athena, the Greek Goddess of wisdom, war and the arts. During the Centennial celebration of 1897 over 1.8 million people attended the six month long tribute to Tennessee’s Statehood, and it is in the midst of these revels that Nashville’s Nutcracker takes place. Featuring local historical figureheads such as President Andrew Jackson and Vanderbilt University Chancellor James Kirkland this specialized rendition of the classic ballet lends a historian’s touch to a childhood Christmastime story. Over 200 children, actors and actresses from the Nashville area will brighten the stage as the Nashville Ballet brings Dumas’ tale of Sugarplum Fairies and Nutcracker Princes to life in our very own backyard as the Nashville Symphony Orchestra performs Tchaikovsky’s score each night.

Running from December 9, 2011 to December 16, 2011 at TPAC, Nashville’s Nutcracker provides yet another Tennessee tradition to share with your family. A Victorian style winter carnival will be located outside TPAC for preshow activities and 30 minutes before each show time in the Tier Level Lobby there will be a special story time event for any interested young audience members that will help them to understand the story of the ballet. A list of special details to look for during the show will be provided to help make the experience all the more magical.

Angel Tree

Christmas is best reflected in the joy seen in a child’s eyes when they open the presents left under the tree on Christmas morning. The sheer pleasure of that moment is often enough to get families through months of hardship and strife. In 1979 Majors Charles and Shirley White realized the number of families that couldn't offer that to their children were staggering, and decided to help while stationed in Lynchburg, Virginia. Working with the local mall the White’s organized a program where a Christmas tree was festooned with greeting cards bearing the names and needs of children in the area that otherwise would not have presents to open at Christmastime. These cards bore the likeness of angels… and The Angel Tree program was born.

When the White’s were transferred to Nashville in 1982 WSM radio, which airs the Grand Ole Opry, became the first co-sponsor in the US. Soon national exposure followed and the Angel Tree became a widely recognized and supported Christmas charity. Now the Salvation Army partners with corporations, radio stations and department stores in order to provide more and more children and seniors with no family the Christmas joy they deserve. JCPenney even has online registration for Angels, where you can pick your own “Angel” and if you complete your shopping with JCPenney they will deliver the gifts to the Salvation Army free of charge. Kroger has also gotten into the giving spirit with their Food Angel program. At many Kroger locations you can simply grab a tag off the tree and they will scan it at the register. $25.00 will be added to your total purchase and $25.00 worth of groceries will be purchased for a family in need.

The Salvation Army has also recognized the growing numbers of Angels that aren’t adopted and have done their best to accommodate every single child or senior in need by forming the Forgotten Angels Program. This is a store of basic gifts, categorized by age groups, that covers the needs of an Angel even if they weren’t specifically adopted.

Corporate sponsorship has become crucial in this economy and Bob Parks Realty has done its part to help ensure that the Angels in our area are not forgotten. This year, we had outstanding participation by our Brentwood agents, adopting a total of 40 Angels from the Cool Springs Galleria location.

The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of the giving spirit associated with Christmas, the numerous Santa's accompanied by their bells and red kettles have become ushers to the season. The Angel Tree is just a more specific way you can make sure your donation goes directly to a person in need this holiday season, and provide yourself with the joy that accompanies giving.

Frosty Fun Run

‘Tis the season…. To strap on your running shoes and jog your way to some charitable contributions. Saturday December 10th, 2011 Fleet Feet of Murfreesboro is hosting the Frosty Fun Run to help raise money for CASA (Court Appointed Social Advocates for Children) and Bob Parks Christmas for the Children.

CASA is an organization of trained volunteers that help social workers review documents in order to expedite the cases and placement of children within the social system. These volunteers help reduce the workload of case workers and allow each child a better chance at a closely reviewed case, standing up for the child in court and helping a judge rule on the best course of action to get that child into a safe and permanent home.

Bob Parks Realty Christmas for the Children helps ensure all Rutherford County children will have presents under the tree on Christmas morning.

The Frosty Fun Run, which is just under five miles, winds through the picturesque trails and tracks of the Stones River Country Club Golf Course. Pre-registration with an unwrapped gift is $20.00, $30.00 without a gift. You can register the day of the race for $35.00. T-shirts can be picked up (with pre-registration) Friday, December 9th any time between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Fleet Feet Murfreesboro.

Registration the day of the race begins at 6:45 a.m. and the run begins at 7:30 a.m. Waffle House is sponsoring a post run breakfast beginning at 9:00 a.m to help replace the calories you burned.

All proceeds and gifts collected will go to CASA and Bob Parks Christmas for the Children so come out December 10th to the Frosty Fun Run and run (or walk) for a cause. It is not a timed event and there is no skill-level required, just a big heart and a willingness to contribute to charities that ensure our local children don’t fall through the cracks this holiday season.

Great Thanksgiving Banquet

Thanksgiving is a time for family, a time for gathering together and celebrating the things we have, the people we cherish, and all the things we are thankful for. The week prior to this Thursday is spent doling out grocery lists, assigning dishes to bring, contacting family members we haven’t spoken to since last Christmas, fighting the crowds at the grocery store, throwing elbows over the last turkey on sale for $.59/lb, and mapping out our Black Friday strategies. If you are the one (un)fortunate enough to be hosting the event you get to do all the aforementioned things as well as scouring your home from top to bottom, dragging out china and linen you haven’t used since last year, and polishing silver your Great Grandmother was “thoughtful” enough to give you.

Perhaps in the wake of all this “thoughtfulness” one might give pause and remember there are people out there that no longer have the ability to observe the traditions we all take for granted. While we are knee deep in sweet potato peels and turkey innards there are families that look forward to one thing and one thing only: The Great Thanksgiving Banquet at The Nashville Rescue Mission.

All day on the 23rd and the 24th the Rescue Mission will be staffed with hundreds of volunteers making sure those less fortunate don’t spend Thanksgiving being reminded of all the things they are without. A warm meal, a smiling face, and a helping hand might be the highlight of this person’s holiday season and it wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers that sacrifice those hours of family time, football watching, and grazing the leftovers of Aunt Martha’s homemade cranberry sauce for the rest of the day.

“It’s not just about serving them a traditional Thanksgiving meal,” says Don Worrell, President and CEO of the Nashville Rescue Mission. “This meal may be the first step in reaching a man or woman in the grip of addiction or other life-debilitating situation and guiding them down a new path.”

If you can’t donate your time, you can always donate your resources. The Nashville Rescue Mission has online services ranging from one time donations to monthly recurring payments, and even allows you to see if your employer will match your gift. There is a center for physical donations as well, taking clothing, electronics or food onsite.

This year, in the midst of the mayhem that surrounds the holidays, take the time to think of those without. Without food, without homes, without the support systems to enable them to escape their situations, whatever they may be. Take the time to think of them, and do something about it. Donate a couple hours of your time instead of hitting the stores at midnight, or a couple of dollars instead of that grande latte, and be thankful you made a difference.

After the Flood

May 3, 2010 was a day most Tennesseans will always remember. The day torrential rainfall shut down interstates, tore houses from their foundations, swept church buildings down newly forged riverbeds and swamped the halls of Opry Mills and the corridors of Opryland Hotel. Devastation was widespread, homes were destroyed, lives were lost, and millions of dollars worth of damages were reported on a daily basis as areas all over middle Tennessee struggled to recover as the receding floodwaters revealed the depth of devastation left in their wake.

Opry Mills, located just off Briley Parkway, was opened on the former site of Opryland Amusement Park in 2000. For 10 years this single level mall employed roughly 3,000 people and grossed sales that generated annual sales tax revenues of $26 million. When the flood hit in 2010 it closed the doors of this institution for two years, locked in litigation with an insurance company and struggling to keep its head above the ghost of the water that had long since left the mall echoing and empty.

Bass Pro Shop was the only independent storefront able to reopen, resuming normal operations September 18, 2010, nearly four months after the flood. Everything else in the mall remained closed, with no definitive timeline available for reopening. Until now.

Last night, November 17th at midnight the Regal Opry Mills 20 officially reopened their doors to coincide with the premier of the newest Twilight installation “Breaking Dawn, Part I.” After a test run of $2.00 movie nights benefiting charities ranging from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to the Second Harvest Food Bank, which collected over $56,000, all 20 screens are now up, running, and operating normal hours. The IMAX screen is back, and the sounds of chatter, crowds, and popping popcorn heralded the reopening of the mall entrances. The remainder of Opry Mills is scheduled to reopen in March of 2012, finally erasing the memories of that day previously broadcasted by empty parking lots and a semi trailer stating “closed for flood renovations.”

Chili Cookoff Weekend

A week ago, on October 29th, Franklin’s Main Street was closed for the 28th Annual Pumpkinfest. It was the largest ever! Throngs of witches, goblins, super-heroes and princesses were seen everwhere….. and Bob Parks Realty was there! Our office was one of 11 participants in the Chili Cook Off! We had prepared weeks earlier by having our own Chili Cookoff in the office….. six hearty souls brought in their offerings and the rest of us blindly tasted and commented on them all and the concoction artfully crafted by Kathy Hardcastle (agent Loy Hardcastle’s wife) was chosen! After that honor, she agreed to make the full 21 gallons of chili for us!

Can you imagine that undertaking…… The week preceding the Pumpkinfest they bought 80 lbs of ground beef, 120 bags of spices, 160 cans of beans… you get the picture… a ton of hard work. The day before the event, Kathy made it ALL! She then ladled it into huge pots, which various Cookoff team members took home and babied overnight. At 6 a.m. the next day, we all arose and heated our chili for the big event and proceeded down to our tent area by 8 a.m. The town was already bustling! We situated our tent between the Franklin Men’s Club and The Daily Dish and decorated it to match our theme: BAD BOB’S BONANZA CHILI…. And boy, our decorations were outstanding…. Lots of saddles, western blankets, even some cattle horns thrown in. The pictures don’t do it justice!

By 10 a.m. there were vistiors up and down Main Street, and by 11 a.m. no one could move…. The day was spectacular for the event and everyone came out to play! Some of us moved down the way to help Franklin Tomorrow sell tickets to the chili tasting…. and hot dogs for the non-chili eaters in the crowd. I was a hot dog seller. Our area was so popular that we kept running out of plates and cooked dogs… by 1 p.m. we had run out of all the water and drinks we had to sell…. I finally got a chance to break away to go on my own tasting spree and of course to VOTE for BOB PARKS! I mingled with the crown and tried to influence a few in our direction…. throwing out a few loud “ mmmmmm…..GOOD BOB PARKS CHILI” several times, but I don’t know if it did any good….. I heard we didn’t win. Actually I think the Boxwood Bistro won those honors!

Before I finish, I have to name the members of our team who worked so valiantly! Loy and Kathy Hardcastle (of course), Danny Anderson, Reid Anderson, Karen Baker, Darenda Olsen, MaryJane Cochran, Kevin Pellatrio, Fran Damer, Rachel Price, Christie Mullins, Ray and Vicki Lowe, Amy Tarter, Tom Stillman, Ryan Ryforth, and yours truly of course….. And then we also want thank people who provided props for us, Bill Butler and Pam Stevenson. And, of course, our office staff who we would be NOTHING without: Julie and Lisa Benavides, and Gaila Noland. Without the excellent team work that is our office’s Hallmark, none of it would have happened! What a great place to work!

An Evening with Friends - Charity Auction

The Tennessee School for the Blind has been helping visually impaired children since 1844. With a vast staff on onsite nurses, doctors, nutritionists, teachers and certified specialists this school is really a community in its own right, offering cottage style residencies and extracurricular activities geared towards adjusting the children and staffed by trained technicians. Of course, this spectacular organization needs special funding. “Friends of Tennessee School for the Blind” helps do just that.

Through donations, various fundraisers and special events money is raised to help send the students to cultural events, buy recreational equipment, upgrade the technology inherent to the success of these students, and help fund the training necessary to teach them to be independently operative in the modern world.

Bob Parks Realty is hosting the 11th Annual “An Evening with Friends” this Thursday, November 17th at 5:00 p.m. A silent and live auction will be held, featuring donations, gift certificates and vouchers from local services as well as items donated by friends and leaders in Nashville’s business, music, and sports community, in addition to individual donors. An electric guitar from Alabama, signed by all the guys, various autographed CDs, and a guitar signed by both Tim McGraw and Gwyneth Paltrow accompanied by the Country Strong soundtrack are just to name a few. The children’s TSB chorus will be performing, hors d’oeuvres and holiday sweets will be provided, and Santa will be there to visit the children from the school.

This event has raised more than $125,500 in the past 10 years, and all proceeds from the event go to the school. Christmas 4 Kids Auction

Christmas trees are sprouting all over the city, lights are being hung, and the stomachaches we all suffer from after Thanksgiving are still just anticipatory pangs of discomfort. Cookin' To Build

This Friday, November 4th, Rutherford County begins its drive raising money for the Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity. Working with Habitat for Humanity International since 1989, Rutherford Habitat for Humanity works to build homes for families in need. The families that benefit from this organization are determined by a board of volunteers, and the families chosen are required to pay a small down payment as well as regular mortgage payments, which contribute to future home building costs. They also have to contribute their own blood, sweat, and joy to the building of the home…. 400 hours of blood, “sweat equity,” and appreciation to the cause to be exact. Rutherford County needs the help of its citizens in order to make this happen, and they strive to constantly offer unique ways to raise money. This Saturday is no different.

The Pottery Place paired with the Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity in order to make Cookin’ to Build come to a boil. Community residents painted pottery specifically for this event. These bowls and plates are part of your $15 admission fee and provide the lovingly prepared surface for you to eat all the stew, chili, or soup you desire. This custom crafted piece of art is yours to keep as a reminder of your contribution to a truly needful organization.

In addition to the pottery, the food, the desserts and the drinks there will also be live entertainment in the form of a bluegrass band with a sense of humor to match their skill. The Flea Market Hustlers will be there to liven the atmosphere and apparently continue in their search for “the perfect taco.” With original pieces and lively covers they will introduce you to “jam-grass” at its best.

Dinner, a show, and a cause that gets families off the street that aren’t looking for a handout, just a leg up. What better way to spend you Friday afternoon? So please, anytime from 11:00 am till 1:00 pm at the Murfreesboro Civic Plaza, feel free to stop in, support a family, and eat some chili.

The Onyx Room

Historic Germantown, lauded as “Nashville’s First Neighborhood” is home to a beautiful building called the Onyx Building, located at 624 Jefferson Street. This elegantly restored building calls itself a “room with a capital view,” and after you climb the gorgeous wrought iron staircase and emerge on the top landing you can see why. The entire downtown Nashville Skyline stretches out before you, glittering and majestic. If you turn and enter the Onyx room, you find yourself in a venue that echoes of its history and one can imagine the myriad of gatherings that have taken place in the room since it became available 23 years ago.

Sunday, October 30th the 6th Annual Harvest Masquerade Ball took place, filling the room with creative costumes, laughter and whimsy. The Grilled Cheeserie and PizzaBuds food trucks pulled up outside and a projection screen showed Tim Burton films over the elevated stage while the participants danced the night away in costume.

Acquired as a member of the Historic Nashville, Inc. in 1987 the Onyx Building has seen the end of Jefferson Street’s Golden Era, and the rise of a newer gentrified Germantown, holding court over renovated homes that offer homage to architecture of days gone by, nestled next to modernized lofts. Tennessee Performing Arts Center

Nashville offers a vast selection of entertainment opportunities, and if you head down Deaderick Street, you will find a building that occupies an entire city block and holds the enriching activities you crave. The Tennessee Performing Arts Center, or TPAC, is nestled among the office buildings of downtown, and when you step out onto the walkway with your glass of wine during the intermission a glorious view greets your eyes.

All manner of events, from Broadway shows to ballet grace this stage, and sweeping stairways allow you access to beauty, humor, or graceful pirouettes. “Wicked,” an extremely original and beautifully performed musical serving as a prelude to Dorothy’s entrance to the Emerald City is currently showing. The kitchen is a gathering place, where memories are made, parties hosted, families bonded. The bathroom is…well you get ready there. That’s important too. And there is one place that is often overlooked in these two integral rooms, one essential surface that is often ignored while counters and handles get all the attention. Home baked goodies that fill the air with the scent of apples, pumpkins, chess pie and fall. Orchids in all their oriental glory, greenery in every shape and size. Gardening tools and lawn ornaments… and yes. Even flying pigs.

If you aren’t tempted enough by the lure of locally grown organic goodness the Market now hosts thirteen restaurants, ranging from Cajun to a newly opened Chinese buffet. All manner of choices are available to tantalize your tastebuds and goad your appetite. Parade of Homes in Brentwood

Brentwood, Tennessee was inundated recently with their own brand of “desperate housewives.” An estimated 15,000 of them actually. And perhaps it wasn’t just the wives, but husbands and mothers and sisters and brothers, anyone looking to purchase a peek into the newest, latest and greatest in real estate evolution on the market, available to those that can afford it. And if you can’t, you might have attended the 2011 Parade of Homes.

Adams, Tennessee

If you are looking for a quiet destination to celebrate fall, as well as experience a little living local history, less than an hour away from the city center of Nashville you will find the sleepy little town of Adams, Tennessee. When you drive through the town with a population of roughly 566 people and historical plaques on most of the home fronts, you normally won’t see much other than stately old oaks blazing with fall colors and white rockers.

The Adams Antique Mall and School House Cafeteria is a wonderful detour from big city life. Built in 1913, and rebuilt in 1920 after a fire ravaged the building, the Bell High School served as the only local school for 55 years. The cafeteria still functions today and serves a fulfilling home cooked lunch five days a week, with an old-fashioned blackboard boasting the daily specials. The Adams museum is in the same building, and there are two floors of antiques for you to browse after you have eaten your fill of southern fare.

If the name “Bell” sounds familiar, Adams is the home of the “Bell Witch of Tennessee.” Actually believed to be an entity nicknamed Kate, sent by a furious neighbor, the Bell’s Witch tormented the Bell family for years. Numerous books have been written, and the legend is widely taught in our public schools. The Bell Witch Cave is still open for tours, and special October tours are available by appointment only. Be prepared for a lively tour through wrought iron gates into a low hanging tunnel, stepping over rocks and trailing your hands along walls festooned with friendly spiders. And make sure you wear footwear you don’t mind getting wet: perched just over the Red River the cave entrance is often swollen with water, and a misstep will put you ankle deep!

Adams is also a popular canoeing destination. With shuttles running daily during the summer and by appointment during the winter you can relax on the Red River for anywhere from three to six hours, traveling up to 12 miles. The slow moving waters make this an easily enjoyable activity for family members of all ages.

Mobile Apps and More!

Recently I have been downloading some apps to me new EVO and it's amazing whats available and FREE! It's fun to navigate the world without even leaving the living room and discover what is happening in every aspect of life with a touch of a finger.

My latest discovery for my professional use is the RealTracs mobile app. It functions like a GPS searching for homes in the vicinity, including price, age and maps the properties for easy identification. This download is available for iphones, droids but not blackberries.

Technology is certainly making it easier for the consumer and Realtor. However, nothing beats the place of sitting down and having a good conversation!

Happy Birthday to Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport!

"Time flies" and it's already been one year since the grand opening of the new airport in Panama City Beach. The airport celebrated its one year anniversary with a get together looking back to this time a year ago. The unveiling of a huge "rock" that commemorates the sponsors involved in the project was presented. Southwest Airlines is the carrier in every day servicing four locations with eight flights per day which equates to 2,000 seats every day! WOW! This year the airport served 800,000 passengers which is three times greater than the traffic the old airport saw annually.
