Community Gardening Event, Tonight, March 10

The Grosse Pointe Park Beautification Commission is hosting a Community Gardening Event tonight at the Tompkins Center at 7:30. Learn about composting, rain barrels, community gardens and have your soil tested.

Chilly-Fest at Patterson and Windmill Pointe Parks this Saturday, Feb. 6

This Saturday, from noon to 4:00 p.m. enjoy festivities to ward off the winter blues. At Patterson Park there will be ice skating and complimentary hot chocolate. Providing there is snow, enter the snowman building contest and see a snowboarding demonstration on the sledding hill. Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride, too.

At Windmill Pointe Park, hot dogs and chili will be available for purchase in the Tompkins Center. Outside you'll see snowshoe demonstrations and have a chance to take a ride on a snowmobile. Take part in ice fishing off the pier. Both parks will have s'mores stations and there will be chances to win prizes.

Come on out and have some cool fun!

City Council Meeting Summary - 11/09/09

Here is a quick summary of last night's city council meeting (NOTE- these are not official minutes of the meeting):

Mayor Heenan and Council members Laurie Arora, Jim Robson and Dan Grano took oath of office for their term of office. Mayor's term is 2-year and Council term is 4-year.

Council voted to re-appoint members of the Parks and Recreation Commission for a 2-year term. I asked how one applies to serve on this commission. If you are interested, send me a note or see the City Manager at GPP municipal offices so your appointment can be considered.

Council also voted to approve the Board of Canvassers for a 4-year term.

Greg Theokis was elected Mayor Pro Tem by Council.

Council formed a new committee to look into updating our city website. Dan Grano, Laurie Arora and Jim Robson will form that committee.

Council voted on a neighbor dispute.

Approval of new DPW vehicle went to lowest bidder.

Approval of invoices over $5,000.

Rodent committee chair, Jim Robson, gave an update and said the committee would be meeting soon.

Meeting adjourned into closed door session for real estate acquisition.

Trick or Treat in the Park

From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. ghosts and goblins will gather at Windmill Pointe Park to collect treats on Saturday, October 24. Resident volunteers will attend stations and distribute candy to the tiny trick or treaters. Hope to see you there! Look for the cowgirl!

City Council Meeting Summary - 9/28/09

Despite the confusion about whether the Sept. 28 meeting was on or cancelled due to it being listed one the city's website as "cancelled," many residents turned out for the meeting to express concern over various matters. Unfortunately, some of the reporters who usually cover the meetings thought it was cancelled based on the city's website and didn't attend. However, a reporter from "Grosse Pointe Today," an online news organization was there. He summarized the meeting on the website which can be found at GrossePointeToday.com.

My only additions to his write-up are as follows:

A resident from Nottingham asked to have an accounting of where the $7-million bond money, approved by residents in 2007, has been spent. Apparently he asked for an accounting of the real estate transactions under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). He is now interested in knowing about the rest of the bond expenditure.

The Grosse Pointe Park website indicated that tonight's meeting was canceled. Since then, I've heard that it is not. Maybe someone should correct the notice. Sorry for the confusion. I'm only reporting what it says next to the meeting.

September 28 Council Meeting Canceled, St. Ambrose Oysterfest

The City of Grosse Pointe Park updated its website this morning and listed tonight's City Council meeting as canceled. At the last meeting on August 24, one Council member asked if a DTE representative could be invited to the next Council meeting to discuss the number of power outages in Grosse Pointe Park. However, the last two meetings have been canceled, so we have not heard anything further on this issue.

If you're looking for something else to do tonight, stop by the St. Ambrose Oysterfest from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Kercheval in the parking lot next to Mulier's market.

A Community Conversation, Monday, September 21

On Monday, September 21, from 6:00 p.m. To 8:00 p.m.,at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. Rep. Tim Bledsoe and U of M Board Regent Andrew Richner will host a bi-partisan “Community Conversation” with the Center for Michigan. I am a guest facilitator for the event along with Grosse Pointe Councilwoman Vicki Granger and Circuit Court Judge, Lynne Pierce.

A few months ago I participated in one of the Center for Michigan’s conversations and found it enlightening. It is a chance for Michigan residents to voice their opinions regarding how our state should handle its challenges and create a vision for our future. Conversations are held around the state. The views shared at the forums will be compiled and presented to state leaders to provide them direction in their policy decision making. By participating, you can help influence Michigan’s future.

Council Meeting Cancelled for September 14

The regularly scheduled City Council meeting for September 14 has been cancelled. And I was looking forward to hearing from the DTE representative that was supposed to attend this meeting.

The next meeting will be Monday, September 28, 7:00 pm in the court chambers of city hall.

Park resident and Full Circle resale shop employee, Laura Casey, is one of the first-place finishers in the Special Olympics swimming competition. Laura's name will be put into a lottery for a chance to compete in the national Special Olympics next summer in Nebraska.
