Designers are looking for alternatives to traditional autos to find the perfect “Urban Car”. This little three wheeler can reach speeds of 95 Kph. Personally I wouldn’t wanna do that, but for a quick hop to the store or as short term renatals to get around town this could be an option.

When we went to the Consumer Electronics show (CES) this year we were excited to see so many green exhibitors. One theme that carried through a lot of exhibits were different takes on re-chargable or non-alkaline batteries. Energizer introduced their new Zinc Air Prismatic batteries. which work on the same technology as hearing aid batteries which produce electricity when zinc reacts with oxygen in the air. The new batteries are said to last 3 times as long as and be less expensive than lithium ion batteries.
Energizer is not the only one with this technology and some zinc air batteries are available now. Arotech offers an excellent description about how these batteries work for electric vehicles here, and they ran their first electric bus with Zinc Air batteries in 2004.
Will zinc air batteries be the next technology wave for affordable power?

So, you’ve converted to CFL’s, you’re turning off the lights and shutting down your electronics when you’re not using them. Where else can you save electricity?

Have you thought about using a green host?
Few people realize the impact the web hosting industry has on the environment, the average server produces the same emissions as a 15 mpg SUV let alone the data center where the server is located which consumes on average as much electricity as 30,000 households.

Going green is a logical choice for your hosting company too. The cost of operating a 24/7 data center and hundreds of machines is huge. The new green Dell servers produce 20% less CO2 than the average server. Check out their energy calculator to see how much you could save by using smarter servers.

Some hosts take it even further than using green computers. Super Green Hosting is working towards being carbon nuetral by planting trees to offset their carbon emissions and using the new green Dell servers to further reduce their impact on the planet.

Host Papa purchases 100% green renewable energy to power their data center, web servers, office computers, laptops and office space. Host Papa calculates since they started using green power they’ve removed 40,000 kg of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases affecting our environment. That’s the equivalent of removing 20 cars from the highway each year.

You might think that because they’re offeing cutting edge green services these hosts would be more expensive, but both Host Papa and Super Green Hosting are at about the same price with special offers under $5/month. At those prices why not make the change and feel better about this too?

Converting your gas car to electric doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. You could even learn to do it yourself.

Gasoline powered cars might just be the most inefficient tool you use in your daily life, and if you live in the US, odds are good you put lots of miles on yours every single day.
The average gasoline powered car costs as much as $1,800 (averaging 15,000 miles/year at $2.50/gallon and 20 MPG) year for gas alone!

It’s easy to see why people are looking to hybrids or electric cars as viable options.
In a recent article about electric cars on Examiner.com, John Ryden writes “Assuming an average electric cost of 8.7 cents per KWA, the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline would cost $1.02. [(0.087 * 37 / 0.95) * 0.3] If you can get your electric power at off-peak rates available from some utilities, your cost may be half this much.” Clearly NOBODY is getting their gas for $1.02 these days.

Although hybrids like the Prius, Camry and even the Escalade are becoming more and more common on the road, finding a true electric car can be pretty hard to do. Even if you can find them, the cost can be prohibitive. That’s probably why there’s a booming business in car modification. According to the folks at Electricity for Gas it’s not rocket science to do your own conversion to electric and it costs around $300 to do your own conversion. Even Tom Hanks is getting on the bandwagon, so why not you?

Composting is all the rage these days. Why? Well, people are beginning to grow their own food more to save money, and it only makes sense to create your own fertilizer and save even more right?

There are two main ways to compost.

Traditional composting consists of piling vegetable waste, shredded paper and table scraps in a confined space, layering wet organic material and dry, and as the material decomposes it creates heat, accelerating the decomposition process. There are many kinds of composters. The key is to mix the contents of the composter frequently to keep the material decomposing evenly. Rolling bins that you simply roll across the ground a few times to mix the ingredients may be easier to manage than a simple bin that has to be turned with a shovel to mix. It’s generally a good idea to look for a bin that holds about two weeks of garden and household waste as it can take a little while to decompose and you’ll want to have enough room to be able to move the material around freely inside it.

Worm composting is a way of converting your table scraps, vegetable trimmings, even cloth, paper products and grass clippings into beautiful fertilizer for your indoor and outdoor plants. (worms are more efficient that traditional composting) Unlike traditional composting–which takes a fair amount of maintenance–worm composting is pretty low impact and it doesn’t have the odor problems associated with traditional composting, so you can actually set your worm bin up in the garage or basement.

You can build your own worm condo with these easy instructions and tip-sheet, or you can buy one for not much moolah. Either way, it’s a great lesson for your kids in composting, an easy way to lessen your impact on the landfill, and to save money on buying fertilizers.
