'Just finished watching HOME, a documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

The documentary chronicles the present day state of the Earth, its climate and how we as the dominant species have long-term repercussions on its future. A theme expressed throughout the documentary is that of linkage; how all organisms and the Earth are linked in a "delicate but crucial" balance with each other, and how no organism can be self-sufficient.

Pasig River : Before, Now, After

Until early 1900's, Pasig River used to be an important means of transport for Manila. And a source of lifeline for its people because of the bounty harvest of fishes from the river.

But due to the rapid industrialization and carelessness of the people living near the river, it has become very polluted and is considered dead.
Stenchy! Dark! Dirty! As if all the negative words you can find in the dictionary could very well define this river.

After 7 years...

Hopefully, seven years from now, it will look like this (check the photo below). Modern, yet clean and peaceful to look at.

Alive! Navigable! Swimmable!

Through the cooperation of ABS-CBN Foundation, Bantay Kalikasan, Pasig river Rehabilitation Commission, Local Goverment and different Non-governmental Organizations may this vision come true.
Rehabilitation includes the relocation of squatters living along the river banks.
But for now, as we count the target seven years or maybe more, let us do our share. Can we keep our garbage and stop polluting our river. Please.

If you're able to watch the SIGNOS by GMA 7, you will probably understand the claims of different scientists including their proofs that really, Manila and other parts of the Philippines are bound to being submerged under water in the future.

The culprit?

The infamous Global Warming which is caused by everyone living in this planet. Is there still a way we can do to prevent this?

Happy Earth Day to All! Today, let us celebrate Earth Day; and start showing our love to our planet. In Manila, a fluvial parade was held at Pasig River. Different sectors of the society joined the celebration.

At the other parts of Manila, a tree-planting program was held at the CCP Complex by different organizations. How did you celebrate Earth Day?

In connection with the celebration, I want to share with you some important facts about the garbage we produce everyday.

Did you know that it would take long time to decompose some of the garbage we throw everyday?

Here are the approximate rates of decomposition for some of them courtesy of Ocean Conservancy.

Glass bottle : 1 million years
Monofilament fishing line: 600 years
Plastic beverage bottles: 450 years
Disposable diapers: 450 years
Aluminum can: 80-200 years
Boot sole: 50-80 years
Styrofoam cup: 50 years
Tin can: 50 years
Leather: 50 years
Nylon fabric: 30-40 years
Plastic film canister: 20-30 years
Plastic bag: 10-20 years
Cigarette filter: 1-5 years
Wool sock: 1-5 years
Plywood: 1-3 years

A week ago, while doing my grocery at SM (The Block) Hypermarket, I saw couple of people carrying these bags.

Yesterday at 8:30 PM, key cities all over the Philippines participated in voting the "Planet Earth" against global warming.

And of course I also turned off the lights at home for one hour for The Earth Hour Celebration.

I hope this will catalyze the awareness of the people all over the world to start caring for our planet. Video footage of the event after the jump...Turning off the lights for one hour is the start. But it should not stop there.

Looks like spider webs are more orderly than these electric, telephone and Cable TV wires.

I've seen unorderly wires in almost all parts of Manila. Specially after the widening projects of streets at Commonwealth Avenue in QC where they need to move electric posts.

I hope Meralco and PLDT could do something about this.

I found this very interesting site, FOREST FOREVER, few days ago. I thought it's worth sharing this to you.

The site is full of interesting information about the current situation of our world forests.

Photos are so impressive, hundred years old trees, vast forests, interesting tree features. See the most virgin forests of the world.I have not fully travelled the vastness of the forests through the site. The Forests Gallery works like Google Earth.

What If You Could Hold The Largest Whale Shark?

I was doing my afternoon blog-hopping, then I bumped to Guido Trombetta's SEAWAY and his blue whale shark post.

It really amazed me seeing a whale shark, locally known as Butanding (which is considered as one of the largest creature in planet)being held by a fishermen with his two hands.

The baby whale shark was found with a rope on its tail tied to a stick in Pilar, Sorsogon.

Allow him in the wild for several decades and he will turn into this...

According to WWF, an adult Butanding can easily grow up to 40 feet. Just imagine the size of a passenger bus, and that's how big it is.

And this will be possible if you will maintain our seas clean.

Cool Eh! Just one hour of no lights, aircon and video games. It won't hurt that much. But the result is a tremendous attention-grabbing to all citizens of the world to start caring for the Earth.

Earth Hour 2009 aims to reach one billion people in 1000 cities all over the world. To help reach this goal, a global sign-up campaign and competition is again being launched worldwide. Last year, the Philippines ranked 9th in terms of total sign-ups. All Filipinos are urged to sign up at Earth Hour's global website: www.earthhour.org. Over 1000 cities in 80 countries have now pledged support.

The Futuristic City Hall

The Future Tagum Cityhall probably is the very first Cityhall in the Philippines which will have the futuristic design.

Led by the City Mayor, Rey T. Uy, the groundbreaking ceremony for Tagum City's new seat of Government happened last Feb. 14, 2009.

According Mayor Uy, the New City Hall is expected to be completed by Sept. 9, 2009 converted to numeric 9-9-9 is a lucky number according to traditions.

Will this be the start of Philippines going futuristic?

The floor area of the City hall is about 9,000 square meters while the atrium measures a floor area of 2,000 square meters. The rest of the area will be parks and playgrounds." Uy said. The New City Hall costs around P200-million, excluding the site development works that includes park, roads and playground. Mayor Uy said the development cost would be around P280-million that includes the parks and playground.
