Must Have: Plus Size Vintage Clothing

I’m become more and more interested in vintage clothing lately, I love the idea of pre-loved clothing, the history of the pieces, and the thrill of the hunt. I haven’t actually done it yet for lack of time, but perhaps when I move to Austin, TX, I’ll explore some of the wonderful vintage shops there. Anyway, one of the things that does hold me back from vintage shopping is the fear of not being able to find anything in my size. I know that’s not necessarily accurate, but whenever I do browse some of my favorite online vintage boutiques, the pieces I love are WAY too small according to the measurements (I’m generally a size 12, but my hips are HUGE ) and since I don’t have any experience with vintage shopping, the task seems daunting.

Hayley, designer behind Green Grechen favorite, Heidi & Seek, let me know this morning that she’d relaunched her etsy site with all new designs and a new concept: instead of creating one-offs, she’s designed 5 styles in different colors & sizes (up to XL) so everyone can find one to fit their personal style and body. Everything is still made from reclaimed materials and she will be adding new styles every so often – so check back!!

I think sometimes we get “stuck” referring to only organic cotton or other eco-friendlier materials as “eco-fashion” and forget sometimes there are other issues, like fair wages, fair trade, providing work and business for communities, business ethics and other things at play when it comes to socially conscious shopping. In my opinion, a $5.99 organic cotton t-shirt from Wal-Mart is not as eco-friendly as a hand designed and executed blouse by an independent designer in Portland, for example.

Upcycled leather cuff bracelets by Grace Jewelry

Since its formation in 2006, Grace Jewelry has become a word of mouth phenomenon among style mavens for its one-of-a-kind leather bracelets that use 80% recycled/repurposed materials.
