Christmas Appeal Tops £2,500

This year's Christmas Appeal at Christ Church Great Ayton and St Oswald's Church, Newton under Roseberry has passed the £2,500 mark. The money will be sent to the charity Embrace the Middle East which supports the oppressed Christian minorities in the West Bank, Egypt and Israel in running hospitals, schools and community projects. Although the funds are channelled through the Christian Churches in those places, the charity works with the poor of whatever religion.

The Christmas Appeal takes place at all the Carol Services held at Christ Church and All Saints Church in Great Ayton and Saint Oswald's Church in Newton under Roseberry. As well as the Church Carol Services, there have also been ones for the Mothers Union, the local Freemasons and Marwood and Roseberry Schools in the village. The appeal ends with the Crib Service on Christmas Eve.

Vicar of Great Ayton, the Revd Paul Peverell says, "I am delighted that we have had such a good response this year when many people are finding things a lot harder than usual. This sort of giving makes Christmas come alive."

As well as celebrating a good total, there were also very good attendances for the services. The Christ Church Carol Service on Sunday evening featuring the Bethlehemian Rhapsody, put on by the young people with puppets to a re-write of the classic by Queen.

The Crib Service featured a wonderful re-telling of the traditional nativity story with lots of lively and moving songs well sung by a large cast. Both services were packed to capacity.

Young and Old Flock to Christingle

Christ Church, Great Ayton, was packed on Sunday evening, 5th December, with around 250 people for its annual Christingle Service. The service celebrates the light of Christ coming into dark places, and is done in support of the Children's Society who work with disadvantaged children in this country.

Gill Steele, pictured, who has organised recent services brought involvement into the service from Great Ayton Youth Drama who did a presentation on bringing in the light, the Sunday School who led the prayers, and several young singers from the village accompanied by Zuilmah Winterschladen, who gave a service that appealed to young and old alike.

Vicar of Great Ayton, Revd Paul Peverell said, "We are hugely grateful to Gill for the energy and enthusiasm she puts into this service and the way she has got so many folk involved, and to all the committee for their support."

The service raised a further £407 for the Children's Society, and is part of the regular programme of events run by the Great Ayton committee, which last year raised £10,000 making it the society's top fundraising committee in the North East and in the top ten nationally.

Passing on a Blessing

It's not something you normally expect to see happen - a Church giving money away, but that's exactly what will be happening at Christ Church, Great Ayton at their Harvest Services on Sunday 14th October.

The Vicar of Great Ayton, Rev Paul Peverell, said, "Harvest is a time when we remember the things that we have to be thankful for, and despite the recession there is still a tremendous amount. So this year as a way of showing our appreciation we are handing money out to those attending the services for them to pass a blessing on to others."

What the Church is hoping to happen is that all the people who are given £10 will take it away and add to it by their efforts to make it even more to pass on to pass on to some worthy recipient in the community. Ideas could be filling their car with £10 worth of petrol and giving some older folk a run out in the country. Using it to buy ingredients to bake, and then drop their efforts off where they would be appreciated, be it old folk, mother and toddler group or the local youth football team. They may want to take out a lonely neighbour out for a coffee. What we want are people encouraged to pass the blessing on to others and think of something imaginative..

The Uniformed Organisations are coming to a special Church Parade at 4pm and they will be given £25 per group for them to work together to help pass on a blessing.

If anyone wishes to use their money to raise money, they can either send it to a cause dear to them, or bring it back to Christ Church where it will be sent to support Christians in Syria, many of whom have had to flee their homes because of the fighting there.

The Services on Harvest Sunday on 14th October are 8am Holy Communion, 9.15am Parish Communion, 11am Come & Praise Family Service and 4pm Church Parade.

Revd Peverell says, "No-one will be forced to receive the money. All we ask that if they have a good experience doing it, then they tell us about it without mentioning names of any individuals. We hope to help people experience the joy of sharing a blessing with others."
