Kirkby and Great Broughton School's Bible giving service took place last week, in school with all the Year 3 children receiving a beautiful Bible to mark their transition from infant to junior life. Parents, grandparents, teachers and pupils joined together to celebrate this annual event. The children told the Creation story through their own striking artwork created in class with their teacher Ros Smith and spoke about what the Bible meant to them. They proudly talked about favourite books given to them by family and friends and the older children relived memories of when they had taken part in the same service. Bibles were presented by Rev Dr Anne Heading and Mrs Celia Curry, Headteacher.

Mrs Curry commented: "As one of our boys left the hall he hugged his Bible to his chest and commented 'I'm going to treasure this book forever!' - that says better than anything how important this moment is to our children."

Kirkby and Great Broughton Church of England School is delighted to welcome onto the school grounds, a dedicated home for Kirkby & Great Broughton nursery. Having been without a permanent location since 2003 this represents fantastic news for the whole community.

Footpaths are in place, outdoor activity trails are ordered and the Friends of the Nursery have even ordered the blinds! Sandra Burgess, Deputy Nursery Manager, was overwhelmed as the building arrived on an autumnal morning under the backdrop of the Cleveland Hills. Mrs Burgess commented, "It's down to the dedicated work of all of the friends of our nursery that we have finally achieved our dream".

Dr Nicola Harrison, Chair of Governors, said, "It is wonderful that we can now have a closer working relationship between school and nursery. Parents and children will be a part of the school working, playing and socialising together during their time at nursery, easing the moment when their children start "big" school."

Although the building is now here there is no time to rest as the nursery prepares for its projected opening date of January 2010. This is wonderful news of course for the youngest children in the area. Mrs Kelly, Nursery Proprietor, said, "I cannot thank everybody involved enough for this opportunity which has been the answer to all my prayers".

Members of Stokesley's Army Cadet Detachment hit the town's streets on behalf of the British Legion.

And their sterling efforts helped boost the coffers by around £1,300.

Osmotherley branch chairman, David Black, was full of praise for the youngsters.

He said: "People are often critical of modern youth, but these cadets set an outstanding example to us all, showing a willingness and enthusiasm which was heart-warming to see.

"They were everything you could ask for, smart, polite, cheerful and hardworking."

GREAT Ayton Under-13s progressed to the next round of the Challenge Cup with a convincing 10-1 win over Newton Aycliffe SC played in a strong wind and heavy rain.

Ayton kicked into the strong wind in the first half and adapted to the conditions immediately.

Within the opening minutes Bradley Malone drove the ball into the top corner to give Ayton the perfect start.

Most of Ayton's attacking was coming down the left with Malone and Jamie Donaghue giving the Aycliffe right back a torrid time.

It was Donaghue who created Ayton's second goal with a perfect cross for James McCullagh to score his first of the game.

The conditions were always going to make things difficult for the Ayton defence of Domonic Harland, Sam Sunley, Michael McAvoy and Jamie Donahue and it wasn't a surprise when a long ball was missed by the back four and an Aycliffe striker was on hand to poke the ball under Ayton keeper Joe Tomlin and make the score 2-1.

It didn't take long for Ayton to restore their two-goal advantage when Malone latched onto a Lewis Colley pass to lift the ball over the advancing keeper for his second of the game.

Flynn Johnson added Ayton's fourth following a fine pass from McCullugh.

Malone then completed a first half hat-trick when he smashed the ball over the keeper's head to give Ayton a 5-1 half time advantage.

With the game seemingly in the bag Ayton were able to make a series of substitutions at the break with Jordan Hinchcliffe, Jack Hirst, Tyler Egerton, Lewis Rushton, Shay Colley and Joe Stonehouse getting some time on the pitch.

With the wind at their backs Ayton dominated the second half and it was no surprise when McCullagh scored his second of the game from a Colley corner.

Colley then got in on the act scoring with a great shot from outside the box.

McCullagh completed his hat-trick when he steered the ball past the keeper.

Michael McAvoy was next to get his name on the score sheet when he headed home.

The scoring was completed by McCullagh as he scored his fourth of the game from close range. Ayton progress to the next round with a final score of 10-1.

Where will you be on Remembrance Sunday? Will it be a trip to Tesco or the Garden Centre, or will you be playing Sunday football or rugby or taking your children there?

Our Armed Forces will be on duty in Iraq and Afganistan, many mourning the loss of comrades in the attack in Afganistan reported today that has claimed a further five British lives taking the total up to 229.

I know in my community that there are young people torn by loyalties as Sunday League matches have unfortunately been scheduled at the same time as the Uniformed Organisations expect them to join in Remembrance Sunday Parades

We often wonder what we can do to support our troops abroad. Well, one thing we can do is to attend our local Remembrance Sunday Parades and Services that commemorates young lives lost in the Two World Wars and since. Most of our soldiers who are killed are hardly out of youth themselves, but have taken on responsibilities beyond their years. The photographs of young lives lost that feature on our news are someone's sons, brothers, husbands and fathers - and sometimes daughters too. They are young lives cut short before their time, and have been given to help keep the peace and security in our own country by making the world a safer place.

Such sacrifices should not be taken for granted, and we can express our support for those in service in Iraq and Afghanistan by stopping to remember them. So let's put the remember back into Remembrance Sunday this year and attend our local services. If our team goes short because we are not playing, they will remember too and maybe plan their fixture list differently next year. Make an effort to remember - lest we forget.

The Act of Remembrance at Great Ayton begins at the War Memorial outside Christ Church on Guisborough Road at 10.45am on Sunday, and then continues with the service in Church.
