The year 2010 may still officially be some months away, but that's not stopping security vendors from releasing major 2010 software upgrades to their antivirus apps and security suites. Just this week, Check Point Software released ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2010 and ZoneAlarm Extreme Security. What's the difference? The former is a complete suite with the familiar ZoneAlarm firewall, plus antivirus, antispyware, and parental controls. It costs $50. The latter lays on extra padding with Web browsing protection, antiphishing technology, and backup and system tune-up tools. It costs $70 for the complete set. How did the apps do? ZoneAlarm's offering is hot on the heels of Trend Micro, which itself unveiled its three new security products, ranging in price from $40 to the $70 pro suite.

If you're paying for your software for your PC, read this first! Anna Powell shows you how to get great software absolutely free.

Back in March, we wrote about how to kit out a PC for free. The suggestion was you could get a free machine from Freecycle, and then install the free operating system Ubuntu Linux.

Now, even as someone who's both a self-proclaimed money-saving fiend and a geek, I think that's pretty hardcore. If you've done it, good on you - Ubuntu is fantastic. In my opinion, it's the first version of Linux that is genuinely easier than Windows to install and use. I run it on my laptop. And it has all the other advantages of Linux, which we won't argue about either here or in the comments (please).

But what if, like most of us, you've already got a decent PC? It probably runs Windows - indeed, it probably came with Windows already installed. And if you're not interested in learning about Linux for its own sake, there's probably no particular reason to switch.

Well, if that's the case, then there are two important things to say. Firstly, you shouldn't need to pay for almost any other software. Secondly, there's all kinds of free software that's worth knowing about. So this article is about the best bits of free software out there for Windows users.

Free as in beer

First, a quick note on what I mean by 'free', to avoid confusion. Geeks make a very important distinction between two kinds of free software: free as in beer, and free as in speech.

The first, obviously, is stuff that doesn't cost anything. The second is software where, broadly, the code is freely available. Free-as-in-speech software is awesome and the future, which is pretty much all you need to know.

However, in this article, I'm looking at software that is free as in beer. That's because the purpose of this article is to save money rather than the world. Some of the software I mention here is open source, and some isn't.

Apart from not costing anything, the only other thing shared by the bits of software mentioned here are that they run on Windows, and that I've used them extensively myself and found them easy and reliable.

Star of the show

My first recommendation is a piece of software that absolutely everyone should have. It's called Dropbox, and it's a way to share your files between computers, and back them up online. And it costs nothing.

It's ludicrously simple to use. You install it on your own computer, then define a particular folder as your 'dropbox'. Anything you save there automatically gets backed up online, with a full version history. And, if you install Dropbox on another computer, you can share your 'dropbox' folder between the two computers. So it's easy to share work - no more carrying USB keys around.

Dropbox is free for up to 2GB of files, which is lots. I can't recommend it enough.

Don't pay for conversion

Probably the most common kind of paid-for software is conversion software, where you need to convert an obscure file format into another obscure file format.

If you use Google to search for conversion software, the first page of results will usually be expensive bits of software with good search engine optimisation, and do just that one thing for about £20. Bah! Look lower down the list. There's usually something free.

The most common conversion problem is Word to PDF. You can pay for the full version of Adobe Acrobat to do this, but I prefer CutePDF, which is free.

Freephone

Do you have Skype yet? If not, it's the granddaddy of free software - it lets you make free phone calls to other Skype users, anywhere in the world. All you need is a headset with a microphone.

A quick way to get Skype, along with lots of other useful free stuff, is to download the Google Pack. You may not want everything on here (personally, I'd be a bit careful about RealPlayer and Google Desktop - I find the first unusable and the latter more memory-hogging than useful), so just remove anything you won't need.

Another day at the office

If you don't already have Microsoft Office, I would recommend Open Office, although with slight caveats for large files (I'll just say, back up your work).

More and more, I've started to use Google Docs. If you have a Google account, you too can use this - the major advantage is that it makes it super-simple to share work with other people. Install Google Gears to work on documents and Gmail offline.

Picture this

IrfanView is simple and great for basic image viewing and editing - it's way better than the free image programs in Windows.

For advanced image editing, I like Gimp (basically a free version of Photoshop), although some people don't. You can do a lot online these days, too - try SplashUp.

Music

We've written about cheap alternatives to iTunes before, but for completely free listening, Spotify is fantastic. Last.fm is genius, too.

And finally...

My favourite small, useful bit of free software is SpaceMonger. It gives you a visual representation of what's filling up your hard drive.

I know I haven't mentioned anti-virus software, but slightly heretically, I don't actually use it myself.

A final note - sometimes, people are put off free software because they think it'll be harder to use. Quite the opposite, in my experience. But if you do get stuck, there's a quick guide to geeks' own technical support methods in this cheat sheet (from XKCD, a web comic that's wildly popular with self-proclaimed nerds). See - nothing magical!

How To Protect Software

This article shows the ways to protect your software application. Software protection is need of the day. It is estimated that about 30% revenue is lost due to piracy but these figures fail to explain the fact that piracy also increases legal sales. Director of a software company told me they learn about some companies using their pirated software but they did not took any action. The director was not surprised when he received order from the same company next year. He said in the absence of a workable demo or just to try full features before making a purchase decision many people use pirated versions. This does not mean that software companies should not protect their products but only mean that a legal demonstrable product should be made available to customer for evaluation for a sufficient period of time.

So let us learn how to protect software.

1. Third Party Software

Many developers use third party applications to help protect their software. As a result many software developers use a combination of protection methods in an effort to thwart hackers. Third party applications are often part of a total protection solution. The downside to relying on a third party is that if the algorithm of the third party application is cracked your software can be at risk.

2. Wrappers

Wrappers are applications that go around a software download. The wrapper handles the ecommerce, security access and tracks affiliate referrals.

3. Partial Key Verification

A partial key verification is a protection scheme that only verifies certain digits of the registration key. The verification digits vary in different versions.

4. Hardware Locking (generally Hard Disc)

Hardware locking, locks the software to a specific computer hardware, it could be hard disc, sound card, processor, graphics card etc. Hardware locking is used so that a single license can not be used on multiple computers. This is generally unpopular with users because they will often have difficulties if they upgrade their system to a faster system, change hard drive, face system crash. User will have the additional burden of contacting the software publisher so they can get their software to run again.

5. Online Activation

Online activation services provide software developers access to a centralized license server on the Internet, preventing software piracy by means of online software activation. Software activation is the process of obtaining a license for your software so that it becomes active and ready to use on your computer. Users dislike software activation because it is a form of “Call-back” and it will be additional head-ache if you do not have internet connection on the computer on which you want software to be installed.

6. Separate Trial and Download

Many developers release different trial version and full versions. This requires users to uninstall trial and reinstall full version.

7. Dongle Locking

Dongle locking is another form of hardware locking. The software will require the use of an external piece of hardware (either connected to the parallel port or USB port) to “activate” the software. This is very-popular among developers because it is easy to incorporate and easy to deliver. Users always dislike anything extra.

8. USB Drive Lock

USB drives also has unique manufacturer identification numbers like hard discs. Some companies are using USB pen drives as locks. The benefit is that you can continue to use USB drive for data storage. Additionally entire software can be provided in the pen drive with data in it. Imagine taking account ledgers or custom designs (like interior design projects, land escaping project etc.) with you when meeting a customer and updating details their it self. USB Drive Lock solutions will be very popular with users as will as developers.

Having a proper software delivery system is also a requirement in International Standards like ISO 9001, ISO 27001, BS17799 etc..

Kaspersky denies data leak following SQL hack

Russian antivirus vendor Kaspersky Labs’s US website was hacked over the weekend, exposing the company’s customer database, but Kaspersky has denied data was compromised and says the vulnerability wasn’t critical.

An unidentified hacker reported over the weekend that he was able to access a complete profile of the company’s databases, revealing its clients’ names, activation codes, list of bugs the company tracks and client email addresses.

The hacker claimed to have hacked Kaspersky Labs’s databases using an SQL injection attack, which exploits a vulnerability in an application’s database layer.

The method has become a popular means to gain information via web-facing applications or as a way to use popular websites to spread malicious software.

Microsoft’s UK website came under a similar attack in 2007 when hackers used an SQL injection to inject HTML code which seemingly defaced its web pages.

The Kaspersky hacker, who published their finding on the Hackersblog.org website, has since said that confidential data would not be released.

“[The] Kaspersky team doesn’t need to worry about us spreading their confidential stuff. Our staff will never save or keep any confidential data. We just point our fingers to big websites with security problems,” they reported.
Kaspersky Labs has admitted that a subsection of its usa.kaspersky.com domain was vulnerable last Saturday when a hacker “attempted an attack on the site”.

“The site was only vulnerable for a very brief period, and upon detection of the vulnerability we immediately took action to roll back the subsection of the site and the vulnerability was eliminated within 30 minutes of detection. The vulnerability wasn’t critical and no data was compromised from the site,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.

Adware
Adware is software that presents banner ads or in pop-up windows through a bar that appears on a computer screen. Those advertising spots usually can't be removed and are consequently always visible. The connection data allow many conclusions on the usage behavior and are problematic in terms of data security.

Backdoors
A backdoor can gain access to a computer by going around the computer access security mechanisms.

A program that is being executed in the background generally enables the attacker almost unlimited rights. User's personal data can be spied with the backdoor's help, but are mainly used to install further computer viruses or worms on the relevant system.

Boot viruses
The boot or master boot sector of hard drives is mainly infected by boot sector viruses. They overwrite important information necessary for the system execution. One of the awkward consequences: the computer system cannot be loaded any more…

Bot-Net
A Bot-Net is collection of softwarre bots, which run autonomously. A Bot-Net can comprise a collection of cracked machines running programs (usually referred to as worms, Trojans) under a common command and control infrastructure. Boot-Nets server various purposes, including Denial-of-service attacks, etc., partly without the affected PC user's knowledge. The main potential of Bot-Nets is that the networks can achieve dimensions on thousands of computers and its bandwidth sum bursts most conventional Internet accesses.

EICAR test file
The EICAR test file is a test pattern that was developed at the European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research for the purpose to test the functions of anti-virus programs. It is a text file which is 68 characters long and its file extension is “.COM” all virus scanners should recognize as virus.

Exploit
An exploit (vulnerability) is a computer program or script that takes advantage of a bug, glitch or vulnerability leading to privilege escalation or denial of service on a computer system. A form of an exploit for example are attacks from the Internet with the help of manipulated data packages. Programs can be infiltrated in order to obtain higher access.

Grayware
Grayware operates in a way similar to malware, but it is not spread to harm the users directly. It does not affect the system functionality as such. Mostly, information on the patterns of use is collected in order to either sell these data or to place advertisements systematically.

Hoaxes
The users have obtained virus alerts from the Internet for a few years and alerts against viruses in other networks that are supposed to spread via email. These alerts are spread per email with the request that they should be sent to the highest possible number of colleagues and to other users, in order to warn everyone against the "danger".

Honeypot
A honeypot is a service (program or server), which is installed in a network.

It has the function to monitor a network and to protocol attacks. This service is unknown to the legitime user - because of this reason he is never addressed. If an attacker examines a network for the weak points and uses the services which are offered by a Honeypot, it is protocolled and an alert sets off.

Keystroke logging
Keystroke logging is a diagnostic tool used in software development that captures the user's keystrokes. It can be useful to determine sources of error in computer systems and is sometimes used to measure employee productivity on certain clerical tasks. Like this, confidential and personal data, such as passwords or PINs, can be spied and sent to other computers via the Internet.

Macro viruses
Macro viruses are small programs that are written in the macro language of an application (e.g. WordBasic under WinWord 6.0) and that can normally only spread within documents of this application. Because of this, they are also called document viruses. In order to be active, they need that the corresponding applications are activated and that one of the infected macros has been executed. Unlike "normal" viruses, macro viruses do consequently not attack executable files but they do attack the documents of the corresponding host-application.

Polymorph viruses
Polymorph viruses are the real masters of disguise. They change their own programming codes - and are therefore very hard to detect.

Program viruses
A computer virus is a program that is capable to attach itself to other programs after being executed and cause an infection. Viruses multiply themselves unlike logic bombs and Trojans. In contrast to a worm, a virus always requires a program as host, where the virus deposits his virulent code. The program execution of the host itself is not changed as a rule.

Script viruses and worms
Such viruses are extremely easy to program and they can spread - if the required technology is on hand - within a few hours via email round the globe.

Script viruses and worms use a script language such as Javascript, VBScript etc. to infiltrate in other new scripts or to spread by activation of operating system functions. This frequently happens via email or through the exchange of files (documents).

A worm is a program that multiplies itself but that does not infect the host. Worms can consequently not form part of other program sequences. Worms are often the only possibility to infiltrate any kind of damaging programs on systems with restrictive security measures.

Spyware
Spyware are so called spy programs that intercept or take partial control of a computer's operation without the user's informed consent. Spyware is designed to expolit infected computers for commerical gain. Typical tactics furthering this goal include delivery of unsolicited pop-up advertisements. AntiVir is able to detect this kind of software with the category "ADSPY" or "adware-spyware".

Trojan horses (short Trojans)
Trojans are pretty common nowadays. We are talking about programs that pretend to have a particular function, but that show their real image after execution and carry out a different function that, in most cases, is destructive. Trojan horses cannot multiply themselves, which differenciates them from viruses and worms. Most of them have an interesting name (SEX.EXE or STARTME.EXE) with the intention to induce the user to start the Trojan. Immediately after execution they become active and can, for example, format the hard drive. A dropper is a special form of Trojan that 'drops' viruses, i.e. embeds viruses on the computer system.

Zombie
A Zombie-PC is a computer that is infected with malware programs and that enables hackers to abuse computers via remote control for criminal purposes. The affected PC, for example, can start Denial-of-Service- (DoS) attacks at command or send spam and phishing emails.
