"Monumental" film, Nov. 5

“Monumental—in Search of America’s National Treasure”, a new, 90-minute, documentary film by Kirk Cameron, will be shown free of charge at Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St., Monday, November 5, at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. “Monumental” is the story of America’s beginnings, starting with historical information and scenes from Europe and America, where Cameron meets with historians and experts in an effort to discover America’s true “national treasure”—the people, places, and principles that made America the freest, most prosperous, and generous nation the world has ever known.

America being long regarded as “the land of opportunity”, there is no question that the tiny band of religious outcasts who founded this country hit upon a formula for success that went way beyond what they could have imagined. How else can one explain the fact that they established a nation that has become the best example of civil, economic, and religious liberty the world has ever known?

What formula did they discover? What motivated them to come here in the first place? More importantly, how can we apply these same foundational truths today?

Beginning in England and moving forward, you will learn about the founder’s motivations, designs, and goals and how to apply the same truths today.

Jay Witham Concert 1/15

Rev. Jay Witham, Christian Country singer and song writer from Cambridge, NY, will give a free concert at 3:00 pm, Sunday, Jan. 15, at Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St., Granville NY. Jay is well-known in this region for his country gospel music and acoustic guitar playing. A love offering will be taken. The church is wheelchair accessible. Jay has pastored churches in NH, MA, and upstate NY, since 1975, most recently The Whiteside Church in Cambridge.

Besides being a pastor and Bible teacher, Jay is also an accomplished singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He has been involved in Country Gospel music since childhood with his family, “The Withams”, and has recorded several projects with Rev. Cal Witham in a unique father and son gospel music team. Both have recorded albums, cassette tapes and CDs and have performed on radio and television.

Jay can be heard weekly on WNGN, 91.9 FM, and the other Northeast Gospel Network of Christian radio stations. . His website is www.bibleadventures.org.

The Withams have received The People’s Choice Award from Branson, MO, and Pioneer Awards from the Cambridge Songwriters Showcase. During his concerts, Jay shares his personal testimony of his salvation experience. The listeners are encouraged toward salvation and believers are inspired in their Christian living.

For the past decade Jay has been developing a ministry to men to help men recover their masculine heart, do their part in the spiritual battle, and become the people God wants them to be in their family, home, and community.

Jay and his wife Linda, who have been married since 1969, live on Shekinah Farm near Cambridge and love horses. They have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. They also have 2 children and 2 grandchildren in Heaven

Rummage Give-away Dec. 3, 2011

Rummage Give-away at Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St., this year, will be Saturday, December 3, 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Items may be dropped off Monday, November 28, through Friday, December 2, 4-8 p.m., or by special arrangement with Pastor Jim Peterson 518-642-2245.

Items accepted: gently used winter clothes, Christmas decorations, gift items, toys & games, stuffed animals, baby and children’s clothes, household and kitchen items, sports equipment, etc.. Please do not drop off summer clothes, furniture, or junk.

This annual event has been well attended in past years by many people who need things and has been supported by people from many churches and segments of the community who have donated many nice items, as well as physical help.

Wade Hammond Concert, May 22

Wade Hammond, Christian singer, songwriter, and musical evangelist, will be in concert at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 22, in the Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St.. He will also sing at 6 pm on May 22 at Faith Chapel Assembly of God on Routes 22 and 4, south of Whitehall.

Wade sings a variety of music—contemporary, praise and worship, inspirational, and Southern gospel. He started writing songs at age 14, and is now a member of the BMI Songwriters Association and has been a Dove Award nominee. Wade’s music can be heard on Christian radio stations across the country, and locally on WNGN, 91.9 FM.

One of 4 children, Wade was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He and his wife, Kathy, live in Hoover, Alabama. Together, they have 5 children, one daughter-in-law, 2 grandchildren and the third one is on its way. They are active members of Gardendale First Baptist Church..

Endeavoring to be obedient to the Lord, Wade shares his faith in Jesus Christ by singing and speaking throughout the United States and Canada. His desire is to tell everyone about Jesus and to minister to hurting people.

Sherry Anne Lints will give a free Christian concert at Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St., at 3:00 pm on Sunday, Feb. 20.. She is a chiropractor in Utica, NY, but has sung with Bill and Gloria Gaither and had a role in a Christian movie, “Clancy”, which was just released. This is part of the monthly concert series arranged by Christian radio station WNGN 91.9 FM. This Sunday, she will also be singing at the Faith Chapel Assembly of God at 6 pm.

Sherry Anne was born with hearing impairment and a speech impediment, but has overcome them with God’s miraculous help. Judy Perkins, Coordinator of the Jeremiah Christian Coffeehouse says, “Sherry Lints always blesses everyone who hears her sing. She has an amazing voice and makes you feel that she truly believes everything she is singing about. They are not just words, they are a testimony. Sherry uses the gift to glorify Him. Whether she is singing gospel music, contemporary Christian music, or hymns, she will ‘knock your socks off’.

Critics say she has perfect pitch and vocal purity.

Rabbi Justin Elwell-Biet says, “To only hear Sherry sing is a blessing; but to know what she has overcome in her life by the grace of God is an amazing testimony of His Sovereignty! Through her music Sherry gives bold witness to His power to move all obstacles from the path of those He has called for His purpose. You will be blessed by her voice, the testimony, and the Presence of the great I Am!”

A native of Utica, NY, Sherry Anne Litts achieved a Doctorate of Chiropractic degree at the age of 24. Additionally, she is certified as a fitness trainer.

Having a great love for people with disabilities, Sherry frequently lectures at elementary schools, vocational schools and colleges. Sherry has been a regular speaker for the “Dare, Dream, Do” Program, a positive outreach to inner city children.

Sherry’s greatest passion, however, is sharing her love of music and drama in churches, coffeehouses, conferences, events, seminars and other venues. Sherry’s rich, soulful voice has allowed her to sing for the Wilmington Celebration Choir on the televised Feed the Children Christmas Special with Lynda Randle, music events such as GMA in the Rockies at Café’ Estes and the Stamps-Baxter School of Music in Nashville, Tennessee.

Sherry serves in the local church, where she has organized and led the “Passion Players” drama team, as well as led in solos regularly as a member of the worship team. Taking a stand for abstinence, Sherry has written several one-act skits emphasizing biblical values such as modesty, purity, and integrity. Sherry has also written a full-length Passion play (i.e., cantata) and an original Veterans Day play to reach out to the community with the gospel message.

In addition to singing and acting, Sherry has been invited to speak at several women’s events and youth retreats, sharing her powerful testimony of overcoming a childhood marked by alcoholism, abuse, and physical limitations. She loves to talk about daring to achieve goals, overcoming obstacles and pride, living a life of modesty and other topics of Judeo-Christian interest.

It is Sherry’s true desire to minister worldwide the message of God’s unconditional love, using her gifts to see lives changed for eternity by the tangible presence of God.

2010 Rummage Give-away, Dec. 4

Rummage Give-away, Dec. 4

“Be a blessing and receive a blessing,” said Rev. Jim Peterson, recently, about the participation of the whole Granville community in the annual Rummage Give-away at Granville Baptist Church, which will be Saturday, Dec. 4, from 9 am to 2 pm.

“Those who donate items to be given away receive a blessing because they have a good reason to clear out their attic and basement and closets of items they are no longer using, plus they receive a blessing because they are helping a needy family have a better Christmas. Certainly the people who come and get items that they need or can use for themselves and their family are blessed. So it is a win/win situation for the whole community,” said Pastor Peterson. Donations may be dropped off at the back of the Church, 23 Quaker St., Dec. 1, 2, or 3, between 9 am and 5 pm.

“Blessings also come to those who give of their time, energy and talents by sorting through the donated items and putting them out on the display tables,” said Pastor Peterson. To volunteer to help Dec. 1-4, call him at 642-2245 or the Church at 642-0673.

Items to be given away Dec. 4 include good, used winter clothes, toys, Christmas decorations, and items that can be given as Christmas gifts. No summer clothes, furniture, or junk will be accepted. “We would also like to borrow card tables or small tables to set items out on. Please put your name on the bottom and call Pastor Peterson,” he concluded.

Gordon Jensen, internationally known Christian singer and songwriter, will be in concert, Sunday, November 21, 3:00 pm, at Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St.. Nominated 10 times for the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Award, Gordon is the author of many popular Christian classics, such as, “Redemption Draweth Nigh,” “You’re the Only Jesus Some Will Ever See,” “Bigger than any Mountain,” “He’s as Close as the Mention of His Name,” etc. His website is www.gordonjensen.org.

Gordon has been recording albums of Christian music since 1976, often in collaboration with Bill Gaither. Some of the album titles are: “Grace Upon Grace,” “Just in Time,” and “Fighting the Fight.”

Living now near Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife and 4 children, Gordon was born in Canada and raised in a devout Christian home. At age 6 he accepted Christ. A desire to serve the Lord and express love for Him through music led to Gordon’s first public performance at age 12. By age 16, he was an integral part of The Orrelis, a touring band which later evolved into “Gordon Jensen and Sunrise”. He launched his solo ministry in 1979.

Translated into 15 languages, Gordon’s songs have been recorded over 2000 times by many different artists, such as, Larnelle Harris, The Imperials, The Continental Singers, Bill and Gloria Gaither, The Oak Ridge Boys, Cynthia Clawson, Dallas Holm, Winans,etc.

“Redemption Draweth Nigh”, which Jensen penned at age 18 has been recorded over 300 times alone and became the musical theme for the movie “A Distant Thunder”. All together, Jensen has written over 300 songs.

Averaging over 150 personal appearances each year, Jensen’s tours have taken him throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain, The West Indies, Scandinavia, Western Europe, Africa, and India. In addition, he is a frequent guest on nationally syndicated television, including the 700 Club, and has co-hosted 100 Huntley Street. He has served as host of a radio talk show.

Jensen’s work defies categorization as it reflects many musical influences and appeals to a wide spectrum of people.

A superb in-person communicator, Jensen’s songs address issues related to the Christian experience with an insight and theological maturity that is unusual in a medium that too often emphasizes style over substance. In his own words, “My goal in being anywhere before people is to exalt the Lord Jesus Christ through the gifts He has entrusted me with. Nothing of real value could occur if I were there for any other purpose.” Invariably, audiences leave his concerts lifted in spirit and strengthened in their faith.

Vote Biblical values Nov. 2

I believe that all Christians should vote on Nov. 2 for candidates who uphold Biblical values. Most of the candidates claim to be Christians, but many promote values that are contrary to God’s Holy Word.

There are at least 6 Biblical values that I believe voters should be looking for in the policy statements of candidates for office:

1. Supporting Israel. In Genesis 12:3 God says He will bless those who bless the descendents of Abraham, i.e., the Jews, and God will curse those who curse the Jews.

2. Being pro-life, which means being against abortion, destruction of embryonic stem cells, and euthanasia. The 6^th of the 10 Commandments is “do not murder”. In Prov. 6:16-17 God says he “hates…hands that shed innocent blood.”

3. Being pro-family, which means believing that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. That is how God created the world and people to be. See Genesis 1:27-28, 2:24. Jesus repeats these sacred principles in Matthew 19 and Mark 10. St. Paul talks about this in Romans 1:26-27. See also Lev. 18:22, 20:13.

4. Upholding freedom. God and Jesus deliver people and give them freedom. See Lev. 25:10 and Galatians 5:1. I believe this means freedom from government control over every aspect of your life. Government should be as small and limited as possible. People should be free to practice their religion in all parts of society—free from government restrictions and controls. I believe government should give local schools more freedom to educate students the way the local professionals think best. Citizens should be free to think, speak, and express their ideas. Citizens should be allowed to own guns. Politicians and all citizens should be willing to defend America and our freedoms no matter what the cost and no matter what weapons it may be necessary to use.

5. Helping the poor in ways that will help them to become self-sufficient and independent of government help, if at all possible. This is the way to truly love God and love your neighbor as yourself. See Mark 12:30-31.

6. Being concerned to protect the environment and the earth as much as possible. See Genesis 1 and 2, Psalm 24:1.

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice. But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” (Prov. 29:2 NKJV). Therefore vote values Nov. 2.

Comedy Night for the Family

“Life Is Short, so Laugh Hard” is the title of a DVD by Christian Comedian Dennis Swanberger, which will be shown at Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St., Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7:00 pm. Snacks will be available. No charge. The public is invited to come, laugh, and enjoy Christian fellowship. Vacation Bible School

“Hero Headquarters” is the theme of this year’s community Vacation Bible School, sponsored by the Mettowee Valley Ecumenical Council. All children, grades K-6, are invited to come to Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St., Sunday, August 1, through Thursday, August 5, 6-8 pm, weeknights. Sunday’s program starts at 5:30 pm with registration, followed by fun activities for the whole family, adults and children, and concluding with an ice cream sundae party. Each night the students will sing songs, make craft projects, play games, and have fun learning about a different child in the Bible who was a hero for God.

Theme verse is 1 Timothy 4:12, “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Pastors, adults, and teens from many churches in the Granville area will be helping the students learn about child-heroes in the Bible who did the unexpected, took action, stepped out in faith. saved the day, and stood up for truth. They will think about ways to follow those examples in order to serve God during the rest of their lives.

Director Sally Peterson explains that this year’s VBS will be in the evening rather than the morning because the Ecumenical Council hopes that more children will be able to attend after their day-time activities and involvements.

National Day of Prayer Service, May 6

National Day of Prayer Service, May 6

The National Day of Prayer, Thursday, May 6, will be observed in Granville with a Worship and Prayer Service at Trinity Episcopal Church on East Main St. at 12 Noon. This prayer service is sponsored by the Mettowee Valley Ecumenical Council. Elected officials, community and business leaders, public servants, and all concerned citizens are invited to join with their fellow citizens in praying for all who serve our community and nation, especially our military. The National Day of Prayer is a vital part of our heritage in America. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history, including President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863.

In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president has signed a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. In past years, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several U.S. territories signed similar proclamations.

The National Day of Prayer has great significance for us as a nation. It enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. It stands as a call to us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people. The unanimous passage of the bill establishing the NDP as an annual event signifies that prayer is as important to our nation today as it was in the beginning.

At National Day of Prayer events all over America, believers in prayer will pray for our nation, state, county, town, village, schools, all elected officials, our military, and all who serve or protect our community, either as volunteers or professionals. The public is urged to attend.

Financial Help Available for Buying Medicines

A NEW “TWIST” IN THE LAW MAY HELP YOUR MOM

Social Security Administration’s Regional Public Affairs Office in the New York Region

Mom has always been there to nurture and take care of you. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to give back and look out for her. If she’s having a hard time paying for her prescription drugs, tell her about the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan and the extra help available through Social Security.

If your mother, or any special woman in your life, is covered by Medicare and has limited income and resources, she may be eligible for extra help to pay her monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments. The extra help is worth an average of $3,900 per year.

Perhaps you’ve looked into the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan for Mom before, and discovered that she did not qualify due to her income or resources. In 2010, the law has changed. As Chubby Checker will tell you, a new “twist” in the law makes it easier than ever to qualify for the extra help.

It’s easy to figure out whether Mom is eligible for the extra help. To qualify, she must be receiving Medicare and:

· Have income limited to $16,245 for an individual or $21, 855 for a married couple living together. Even if her annual income is higher, she still may be able to get some help with monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments. Some examples in which income may be higher include if she or her husband:

—Support other family members who live with them;

—Have earnings from work; or

—Live in Alaska or Hawaii; and

· Have resources limited to $12,510 for an individual or $25,010 for a married couple living together. Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks and bonds. We do not count her house or car as resources.

Thanks to this new “twist” in the law, we no longer count any life insurance policy she has as a resource, and we no longer count as income any financial assistance she receives regularly from someone else to pay her household expenses like food, mortgage or rent, utilities or property taxes. Don’t take our word for it, see Chubby Checker’s rocking message at www.socialsecurity.gov/prescriptionhelp.

While you’re there, you can fill out an easy-to-use online application for your mom at www.socialsecurity.gov/prescriptionhelp. Rummage Give-Away

Rummage Give-away at Granville Baptist Church this year will be Saturday, December 5, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for all people needing free winter clothes, toys, games, children’s books, useful household items, Christmas gifts, Christmas decorations, etc.

Donations of useful items in good condition may be dropped off in the Church Fellowship Hall between 2 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, or Friday, Dec. 4, 2-8 p.m., or at other times by special arrangement with Pastor Peterson 642-2245. Summer clothes, junk, and furniture will not be accepted.

“This has been a very popular event for several years now, “ says Pastor Jim Peterson. “Many folks from other churches and the community in general have made very generous donations of items which are a great blessing to the many disadvantaged people in our area who appreciate being able to get free, useful items to give as Christmas gifts or to use themselves. We also have appreciated the volunteers who have come from many churches and from the community to help sort and display the items that have been donated.”

Granville Baptist Church is located at 23 Quaker St.. The Fellowship Hall is accessible by a ramp from the parking lot behind the Church. For more information, call Pastor Peterson at 642-2245.

Same Sex Marriage

So-called “Same Sex Marriage”

Condensation of sermon preached by Pastor Peterson on April 26, 2009

There is no such thing as “same sex marriage” as far as God is concerned. God created the institution of marriage (Genesis 2:18, 21-24). The basis of marriage is 2 becoming 1—in body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Jesus reaffirms this principle in Matthew 19:4-6. St. Paul reaffirms it in Ephesians 5:31. God created the institution of marriage to be a blessing to males and females so that in union they will complement each other with their differences, making a whole, complete unit. God also created marriage between a man and a woman so that they could produce children (Genesis 1:27-28) and raise them together to become godly adults, following the teachings and role-models of their parents. Marriage has always been a religious institution, up until the last century or two when the civil government decided to regulate it.

The government should not legitimize behavior and actions which God says are “detestable” and an “abomination” (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13 and note the context of these verses), behavior that God punished by destroying Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:4-29), an event that is referred to many times throughout the Bible. When homosexual actions are encouraged in a society, history and the Bible show us a downward spiral of degeneration (Romans 1:24-28, 32).

God also makes it clear in the Bible that individuals and government officials must obey God and fear His wrath for disobedience (1 Samuel 12:14-15, 24-25). God will only bless people and nations who honor God and His Word. Jesus reaffirms all the teachings of the Old Testament (Matthew 5:17-20).

The basic question for our society is whether we want to fear and obey God and receive His blessings, or disobey God and suffer His wrath.

Healing Service, Sept. 27, 7:00 pm

A Welsh minister, David Ollerton, will tell how God miraculously healed his lymphoma, at a Healing Service, Saturday, Sept. 27, 7:00 pm, at Granville Baptist Church, 23 Quaker St. The Praise and Worship team from Granville Assembly of God will lead the singing during the service. Healing teams from the Trinity Episcopal Church in Granville, as well as pastors, elders, and deacons from Granville Baptist Church and Granville Assembly of God will anoint with oil and pray for those who come forward for healing at the end of the service. Rev. David Ollerton has been involved in full-time pastoral and church planting ministry for over 30 years in both England and Wales. He heads up “Waleswide”, a church planting and strengthening network. He has a wonderful testimony of God’s healing power in his own life, having suffered from an aggressive and life-threatening form of lymphoma this past year. David is married to Liz, and they have 3 grown children, one of whom is in full-time ministry. Liz and David are close personal friends of Rev. Bill and Judy Steinmetz from Granville Assembly of God.

This Healing Service is one of a series of healing services on the last Saturday of each month, sponsored by Trinity Episcopal Church of Granville, Granville Baptist Church, Granville Assembly of God, and the First Church of Granville.

Sunday School starts 9/21

Sunday School starts Sunday, Sept. 21, 9:30 am, during the Worship Service. Students will start out in the Worship Service and then will go to their classes after the Children’s Message delivered by Pastor Peterson. There will be 2 classes—one for younger children, led by Abby Wald, and one for older children, led by other teachers, one month at a time—Brenda Smith for Sept. and Oct., and Kim Pauquette for Nov., etc.
