Love this video for the new NTT Docomo TOUCH WOOD phone, possibly the first wood-encased smart phone ever!

The phone, developed in conjunction with Sharp, Olympus, and a reforestation project called “more trees,” contains surplus wood from forest-thinning operations in the Kochi prefecture of Japan.

The Japanese cell phone giant’s phone uses three-dimension compression molding to resist bugs, mildew, and water. Each handset retains an air of originality, featuring the natural coloring and grain patterns of the wood sans artificial colors. Presumably, potential buyers would be more likely to hold on to their phones longer–wood has much more of a feeling of permanence than plastic.

What more could you want from a film? Super-stylized hippies and bikers, great 60s cars, rat bikes and Billy Jack! This was Tom Laughlin’s first appearance as Billy Jack, that sage, wandering, half-Indian, Vietnam War vet. Our very own B movie version of Kurosawa’s Yojimbo. Despite the violent exploitation, martial arts and corny dialogue, the story was based on a real incident from 1964 where members of the Hells Angels were arrested for raping two teenage girls in Monterey, California.

A sad day. On February 4th, we lost Tura Satana. Most famous for her role as Varla in Russ Meyer’s Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, she was a true American icon. As the buxom, explosively violent Varla, she was the leader of her gang of super sexy go-go dancers who would put down anyone that crossed them. All the while tooling around in some great cars. After breaking the neck of the owner, Varla commandeers his Porsche 356, with the blond bombshell Billie in a 1959 TR3 and Rosie bringing up the rear in a 1960 MGA. Just a fantastic film. John Waters once said of “Faster, Pussycat”:  It’s ”the best movie ever made, and possibly better than any movie that will ever be made.”
