A Friend of Mine is Melbourne, Australia based design studio that is turning out some fancy work. This identity system for The Modern Flower Co. is so snappy — I love seeing the system work across multiple pieces. Plus, typography integrated into latticework is always exciting.

I particularly enjoyed the poster at the bottom: it’s designed for a 40th birthday party. 40 isn’t that old, is it? At any rate, I do hope he finds his marbles.

Mmm…deliciously patterned sweets!

Swedish illustrator Jonas Bergstrand has an awesome eye for patterns and keen sense for earthy color. These posters, originally created for Pippi Day—an anniversary celebration for Astrid Lindgren’s children’s hospital, nicely juxtapose thick and thin lines, and also has many interesting patterns and forms.

Jonas has many interesting illustrations, and my current favorite is his most recent one for Swedish publishing house Bonniers. I love the idea of a pop-up map using a collage featuring ephemeral images. Genius! Plus, who can say no to a red lobster and clown? See more of Jonas’ work at his website.

This is a swell season (totally intended) to admire the beauty around us and in this poster. I’m looking forward to seeing more work from these guys.

Super7 is proud to present the follow up to 2007’s blockbuster show “Birds of a Feather” with the new aptly titled show “Birds of a Feather 2″ featuring artwork by Dora Drimalas, Heather Amuny-Dey and Shay Ashley-Ometz. This show features three original new prints from each artist (nine in total) as well as a sampling of older, out-of-print and rare prints from each artist’s personal archive to create a whimsical and wonderful reflection on their lives.

Birds of a Feather 2’s title is taken from the popular phrase “Birds of a feather flock together”, as these three women share an important bond as friends, as well as each one having established themselves a significant role in the male driven world of design. It is a rare confluence of talent and ambition that has led each of them to become some of the most respected designers working today. Birds of a Feather 2 is their chance to share more personal work about life, love, heartbreak, happiness that feature our fair feathered friends.

Birds of a Feather 2 is comprised exclusively of limited edition, hand screenprinted, signed and numbered editions of art that are priced for the average customer. The works lend themselves perfectly to be framed (sized to fit a standard 16×20 frame) and priced at a moderate $40 per print, the show is an overt attempt to create unique items and gifts in time for the holidays, and to encourage the access and opportunity to have and give artwork for those who traditionally are not able to afford it.

Show Dates/Times:
Birds of a Feather2 opens at Super7 San Francisco (1628 Post St., San Francisco, Ca. (415) 409-4700) on Saturday, November 21st at 7pm, with Dora Drimalas and Heather Amuny-Dey in attendance, and on Saturday, November 28th at 6pm at Super7 Florida (720 2nd Street North, St. Petersburg, Fl. 33701, (727) 822-8685).

About the artists:
Dora Drimalas is the principal of Hybrid-Design, and former Nike Senior Designer, whose San Francisco design studio is considered to be one of the finest boutique design studios in the country, with clients such as Apple, Nike, Starwood Hotels, Converse, Sony, Upper Playground and more.

Heather Amuny-Dey is now the Category Design Director for the Women’s Division at Nike, and the former Global Creative Director of the Nike Brand. Heather’s immense talent and ambition have landed her at the top of the corporate ladder despite her being only in her early 30’s. In the past Heather has overseen Nike’s execution and strategy for the World Cup in 2006, as well as the Olympics in 2004 and 2002.

Shay Ometz is a Senior Art Director at Fossil Watches in Dallas, Texas. After working for years in international advertising and design, she was recruited to help reshape the Fossil brand, evolving them from a watch company to a fashion brand. Last year Shay and her husband founded “beethings”, where they make art and products for the home. Their work has been sold all over the world.

Herbert W. Kapitzki: Graphic Designer and Teacher

Posters for the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ)

Herbert Kapitzki, a former student of Willi Baumeister, conceived and designed exhibitions for the state industrial inspection board (Landesgewerbeamt) in Stuttgart in the 1950s and the early 1960s. He developed a distinct language of forms modelled on constructive forerunners, and campaigned for the popularisation of functional graphic design. His own groundbreaking work was exemplary in this respect.

When Otl Aicher asked him to teach at the Academy of Design in Ulm, where he remained until the closing of the school in 1968, he already possessed mature creative solutions and precise concepts of modern information design.

The interdisciplinary discussions about actual and future ways of communication of the Stuttgart ‘group 56′ inspired Herbert Kapitzki. He was a pioneer in exploring the visualisation of information through graphic symbols or systems of codes to meet the needs of modern mass communication in times of mobility.

With his pictograms and orientation systems for airports he set international standards for a lingua franca which nowadays seems self-evident to us. Systematic form design remained the central theme of his teaching in Ulm and in Berlin, where he taught at the Academy of Arts from 1970 until his retirement in 1990.

La Scandinavie avec Andersen is a beautiful children’s book about Scandinavian culture. The book is filled with stories, games and activities. Just think, your child could be making his/her very own Nils Holgersson costume right now! For the budding young history buff, there’s a section on the Drakkars and Vikings. If your child is too scared to look at tough guys with helmets, head straight to the fuzzy Nordic animals in chapter one. Have a four year old that’s into logging? No problem, this book has you covered. There’s a section on the Scandinavian timber industry in the middle of the book. Soon your young one will be able to turn raw material into fine Danish furniture!

I’ve always been impressed with Mark Weaver’s continuously fantastic collage series Make Something Cool Every Day. Firstly, making something like this every day is a great project — I love when designers make their personal work public. Secondly, these collages are an interesting mishmash of styles and images. Mark has a keen sense of knowing what types of images work well together.

I especially like the combination of geographic landscapes, modernist architecture, and scientific and found photography. Bringing all of the elements together with a single name/title is an interesting way of incorporating type, and helps give the work a concept or direction.

Cult + Classic Film Stills From the Hot Dog!

If your into classic + cult films it would be worth your while to check Shannon Maldonado’s I Love Hot Dogs. Several times a week Shannon curates a selection of stills from a particular movie. I appreciate her selection process as she sometimes includes typographic/design details that can easily go unnoticed (think street signs, window lettering, etc.). For fans of the art of film title design, there’s plenty of that stuff as well.

Lubalin Now Exhibition at the Cooper Union

I visited New York last week, just in time to attend the opening reception of the Lubalin Now exhibition at the Cooper Union.

The place was incredibly packed with ladies and gents in polychromatic garb, chatting about type with a nice drink in their hand. It was interesting to see the work of contemporary designers, such as Jessica Hische, Brett Macfadden, Justin Thomas Kay, Deanne Cheuk, and HunterGatherer, juxtaposed against Lubalin’s original works.

If you’re in or around New York anytime soon, I highly recommend checking out the exhibit.
