Way too many single-storey, mid-century City Beach residences have been bowled over and replaced with bloated McMansions. However, this new residence simply and unequivocally demonstrates that one can re-build yet still retain the modernist aesthetic. It works perfectly with the coastal dunes, big blue skies and beachside lifestyle. We love constructing oregon-board concrete feature walls, organic-shaped skylight recesses, suspended slabs and details that highlight the beauty of concrete. Roscommon House, Floreat

Grafform worked closely with the builders to create the multi-levels and curvilinear forms of this modernist-inspired Floreat residence designed by architect Neil Cownie: the organic shapes of the rooftop garden with built-in seating and planter beds; multiple staircases; amoebic skylights; and ‘floating’ concrete sunshades. We love a challenge – and the opportunity to work with concrete in ways which exploit its sculptural potential.

Chester Street, Freo

It's pretty rare to find an unsubdivided block in Fremantle, and this one enjoys spectacular views of the coastline and harbour. Separate residences for two generations of the owner’s family are being built on this sloping site. As the building on the higher elevation approached completion, preparations were underway to commence the ground work and formwork for the second residence at the Chester Street end. Our work on this project includes mostly off-form formwork (the concrete’s texture complements the timber work), while distractions include gazing at that wide blue horizon.

Qantas Dreamliner Terminal

Major modifications were made to the T3 Domestic Terminal to prepare for Qantas’ Perth-to-London non-stop direct flights, commencing March 2018. Stringent safety practices were implemented in order to install a sub-floor inside the operating terminal, directly above staff and baggage handling facilities. We worked with Rama Concrete on this project.

West Leederville Residence

Raising a 100-year-old House

A slightly unusual job, yielding a few interesting surprises. We lifted up the first floor and the tiled roof of this 100-year-old house in Claremont (the house had settled 120mm in one corner), to prepare for remedial structural steel works and additions. Under the floorboards we found some cool artifacts including a cigarette packet (of course) and an advertising card for Stott’s secretarial school. Thanks to Steve Tipp at Acrow for his engineering assistance.

Sad Demise of Surf Club

OK, we recognise that development must occur, but we still lament the sad demolition of the City Beach Surf Club in 2014. Yes, the building may have had some structural problems due to the harsh environment – but couldn’t the distinctive and unique curved concrete roof forms (suggestive of surf & boats) be retained, or their design integrated into the new Surf Club facilities? The Town Council Mayor at that time made ill-informed comments about ‘this ugly building’ which still enrage local modernism fans. Perth Airport Project

We’ve been working with Rama Concrete at the International Airport to set up footings and structural work for extensions to the Terminal. The sight and sounds of planes taking off and landing at adjacent runways adds a surreal aspect to this site. A Plane-spotter’s dream job.

UWA EDFAA Library: Oregon-board Finish Formwork

Grafform recently completed a job for Western Projects at UWA EDFAA Library (Hampden Rd Nedlands).

Refurbishment to the storm-damaged library included forming several walls, stairs and balustrades with an Oregon-boarded (Douglas fir) finish formwork, to match the existing building finish (which was completed 25 years ago).

The building suffered severe flooding from overflowing storm drains during the 2010 deluge. These structural improvements should protect the building from future inundation.

I visited the site today before project handover, and was pretty pleased with the high-standard finish achieved. The job went smoothly thanks to Supervisor Jos Colvin - great working with you!

St Hilda’s Anglican Girls School: Performing Arts Centre

Grafform won the tender to supply and construct Formwork for St Hilda’s new Performing Arts Centre. We commenced work in August 2010 and are now nearing completion.

With many schools currently extending or otherwise adding facilities, we are proud to have been involved in six of them just in this last year. The projects have included Performing Arts Centres, Chemistry Labs, Gymnasiums and classroom additions.
