York

Merry Christmas everyone! I wanted to take time this holiday to break some news to all of you who have been a part of the GRAE New York family since the very beginning.

Since creating GRAE New York out of spring break boredom in 2009, I've finished college, interned my life away, been hired, started a business, visited places I never thought I'd see, and interviewed people I never thought I'd meet.

After nearly 4 years it's time for me to graduate from GRAE. Recently I decided I didn't want to redesign the site for the 4th time this year. I prefer to develop something new from the ground up once again. That something new is The Lex Roe, a site that's going to be all about creative types and things creating an evolution and starting a revolution.

As 2012 comes to a close, I am officially the artist formerly known as GRAE New York. While the new space is in development, I'll be posting as The Lex Roe over on Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Come find, follow & friend once again.

xoxo,

"Having a concept for the direction of the mix helps me
figure out where I really want to head with it."

Part 3: Process in Progress

When you create a mix, do you come up with a theme first and build around it or do you piece together samples you like until it starts taking shape? Roughly how long does the process take from start to finish?

Usually I like to start with a concept. Having a concept for the direction of the mix helps me figure out where I really want to head with it. It could be something as simple as a tribute to one of my favorite rappers, or a collection of songs from the Grammy nominees, like I did back in February. I don’t usually know what songs I want to use until I really sit down and figure out what is the goal of the mix. I’ll spend a good day’s work on making sure the songs flow together.

If you were creating a Halloween mix, which songs would you include?

I think the safe Halloween mix from a DJ would of course include "Thriller". I might take it a little creepier. It might not necessarily be the best dance friendly mix, but I would incorporate some of the hardcore Hip Hop songs. I think I would include songs such as Geto Boys “My Mind’s Playing Tricks On Me” or Eminem’s “Stan”. If you dive deep into Hip Hop there is a lot of paranoia there. That would be my concept right there!

You have released a variety of mixes from the “No Days Off” series to tributes to B.I.G., the Wu-Tang Clan, and most recently Tupac. Over the summer you released “The Last Crate” which has that signature hip hop/soul vibe we’ve grown accustomed to in your previous work; however this one’s an instrumental. Why did you decide to go that route this time around? Do you think you’ll do another instrumental mix in the future?

To me, “The Last Crate” was basically my debut instrumental album. It was different than my other mixes because the instrumentals used were one’s that I produced over the last year or so. I decided instead of initially breaking up the tracks, that I would create DJ mix for the listener to stream. I wanted the listener to push play from the top of the project and let it ride all the way out. I was trying to give it that vinyl feel. What better way to do that than to mix it together using turntables. I definitely have plans on releasing another instrumental mix. It’s actually inspired me to possibly do a tribute mix for a legendary producer. We will see.

"I wanted the listener to push play from the top of the project and let it ride all the way out.
I was trying to give it that vinyl feel."

What would we find on your daily playlist right now?

In my playlist right now some Kendrick Lamar. I cannot wait for that album! My friend Judo just dropped off the Elle Varner album. I’m looking forward to the 4th quarter releases. There should be some good stuff dropping. I’ve recently been jamming a lot of Isley Brothers. I know that’s random.

You have created remixes of songs from up-and-comers like Ellie Goulding and The Weeknd. What other new artists should we have our ear out for?

Remixes are fun to make. It’s like sampling. You are putting your spin on certain song. I’m not quite sure who I’m going to remix next. A few of the remixes I dropped this year, were decided the morning I created them! I tend to get inspired when I’m organizing my music library or downloading new music.

Previously you have produced for FreeSol, Skewby, and Al Kapone. Which other artists would you love to collab with in the future?

Having moved to Memphis and worked with some of the best talent here is a blessing. I’m currently about to embark on a tour with DJ Crumbz. We are doing a few colleges around the Mid South this fall. Our setup is a 2 man x 4 turntable rig. It’s going to be fun to watch. I’m excited for the next few months. I’m doing a lot of work with Red Bull at the moment. I’m headed down to perform a few shows at the A3C Hip Hop festival in Atlanta. That should be a good time. As far as collaborations, I’m a huge fan of Miike Snow. I would love to work with them. Dillon Francis would be cool as well.

"I'm headed down to perform a few shows at the A3C Hip Hop festival in Atlanta."

What is the status of FreeSol? Are you and the guys still with Tennman Records? Is the debut album ready to go or is it on hold while you each pursue other avenues?

The band members of FreeSol are some of my closest friends. They are some of the most talented musicians I’ve ever met in my life. When you deal with labels, you aren’t in control of everything. Even with all the music complete, sometimes the control you have is limited. I think touring with them is one of the best learning experiences. They taught me to break out of my shell. As I mentioned earlier, it’s different to perform with a band than by yourself. You are playing with other musicians who really know and understand music. Those guys are family!

"I decided to pursue a degree in Recording Technology because
I wanted to have a well-rounded knowledge in all aspects of the industry."

Part 2: An Education

While you were an undergrad at the University of Memphis, your music career really got underway. Why did you decide to pursue a music degree in Recording Technology? Did you finish the program?

I credit the University of Memphis and the Recording program for a lot. I’ve met some of my closest friends in that program. The professors are very supportive. I’ve been incredibly busy over the last two years so I had to take time off. I should be wrapped up with the program very soon. I decided to pursue a degree in Recording Technology because I wanted to have a well-rounded knowledge in all aspects of the industry. Performance is only one part. I find myself at ease when I’m in the studio. When I produced “The Last Crate”, it wasn’t something that I rushed into doing. It was a natural project that came over time.

Do you think your music education has made a difference in how you approach various career opportunities? What advice would you give to other music students looking to get into the industry?

I definitely think it has helped. Not only did I have to take courses in Recording Technology, I also took courses in Music Business. I think my advice for other students is too work really hard outside of their programs as well. The music industry is set up for networking. It’s different than a law degree. If you go to a top law school in the country, you have a great shot at a job right out of college. This is not the case with a music degree. You gain the knowledge and experience from your degree, but you have to work just as hard outside in the real world.

Besides DJ-ing and producing, what jobs have you had industry-related or otherwise that you feel have helped shape your career?

I’ve interned in multiple recording studios. I’ve mopped floors, cleaned bathrooms, and vacuumed rugs. The summer after high school I interned in a studio in Richmond, Virginia. It was right before I moved to Memphis. Engineering is one of the most under appreciated parts of the industry. Some of the nicest people you will meet, are the one’s behind the scenes. Engineering is an art form in itself. I’ve learned so much from engineers.

"You gain the knowledge and experience from your degree,
but you have to work just as hard outside in the real world."

Did you ever think DJs would become as popular as they are today with people like A-Trak, Diplo, and Skrillex making a name for themselves not only as DJs but as highly sought-after producers and artists?

That’s a good question because yes and no. Growing up I was inspired by A-Trak, maybe more so than any other DJ. He came from the DJ battle culture. Now if you look at where he is, it is truly amazing. I felt that DJ’s would eventually get the respect they deserve, but it’s crazy how far the culture has really gone. Stadiums are being sold out for DJ concerts. Festivals now have DJ’s as their headlining acts, right along side the big bands. I love it. With more popularity, you definitely see an increase in kids picking up DJing, but I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing. Where it goes wrong is when people don’t study DJing as an art. Not taking the time to practice and really doing the homework. That’s where it goes wrong, but I’m loving the fact that hard work is paying off for DJing.

"I felt that DJ’s would eventually get the respect they deserve,
but it’s crazy how far the culture has really gone."

From David Guetta to Diplo, all eyes are on who's behind the turntables. One up-and-coming DJ/producer who should be on your radar is DJ Charlie White. I first crossed paths with him last year when I saw FreeSol live twice in a month. One-fifth of the Memphis-based band, Charlie added so much energy to the performance it made me wonder why more bands don't utilize DJs efficiently.

Recently I had the honor of interviewing Charlie to find out more about the life of a touring DJ and how his education and experiences have shaped his career. Here's part 1 of 3.

"You are now exposed to such a variety of different people that you really
have to be versatile with your music selection and knowledge of different areas."

Part 1: Life of a Touring DJ

How has the rise of the DJ affected how you focus on your career and market yourself?

I think it’s opening up more doors for different markets. You are now exposed to such a variety of different people that you really have to be versatile with your music selection and knowledge of different areas. Getting booked outside the city you are based out of is important. It opens up the ability to gather what other people want in different regions. What may be hot in one part of the country, may not necessarily work in another. I really enjoy traveling as a DJ. I think it’s one of the most helpful tools for getting better.

How did you make the transition from party DJ to professional touring DJ? What have other touring DJs taught you over the years?

When I first started out DJing, I was living in Charlottesville, Virginia. I was DJing for my older brother’s friends. They would have the classic high school/college house parties. Looking back, those were really fun [laughs]. I used to carry crates of records to these things. 14-15 years old, with a few crates! I made my way to Memphis, TN for college. I started DJing fraternity parties and step shows at the colleges around Memphis. My first out of state gig was MTV Spring Break. I went down there with Skewby. Once I started performing with FreeSol, that’s when I really became accustom to the touring lifestyle. DJing in a band is different than any other form of DJing. That’s really when the music instrumentation of turntables plays it’s role. Other touring DJ’s have taught me what to expect for different events. The best part about hitting the road is that you see some of the same people on a regular basis. You build friendships with DJs in other cities and that is more valuable than anything.

The best part about hitting the road is that you see some of the same people on a regular basis.
You build friendships with DJs in other cities and that is more valuable than anything.

Is there a difference between party rocking college shows and party rocking music festivals?

There definitely is a difference. One cool part about college shows is that it is primarily of one age group. A festival could be up in the air. I remember performing at Lollapalooza a few years back and looking out into the crowd. You saw every age group. Another great part about college shows is knowing that these student’s are having a great time after a hard week of school. You can see it in their faces. They are ready to let loose, drink, and go crazy! It’ s a fun atmosphere. The festivals are fun because of the size of crowds you get.

What have you learned from performing with and opening for artists like Justin Timberlake, Chiddy Bang, and ZZ Top?

Those artists are all extremely different. Each crowd has been different. When you start to DJ for other audiences out of your comfort zone, you have to research and make sure your music library is stacked with everything. An important goal for DJing is to take risks. A song may not work well with a specific audience unless you incorporate it in a clever and creative way. Being creative in the way you blend songs together.

This past May you placed 2nd in the Red Bull Thre3style event in Charlotte. What’s the toughest part about doing DJ battles?

DJ Battles are changing. Technical skills were the dominant deciding factor in previous years. In the DMC battles it’s just a 6 minute routine. Now, the majority of battles are party-rock events. You play to the crowd. Technical skills are icing on the cake. Those are things that add to your performance. When I’m signed up for a competition, I try to train myself. I used a stopwatch and timed by 15 minute Thre3style set. It was important to have backup set ideas in case a DJ played all your music before you went on. That is probably the toughest part. Not knowing what order of the lineup I was going to be picked.

"Now, the majority of battles are party-rock events. You play to the crowd.
Technical skills are icing on the cake. Those are things that add to your peformance."

Do you think more people will start viewing turntables as instruments now?

I don’t really know. I hope so. With the advancement of technology in DJing, the equipment is doing more for you than ever. I see that there is a group of people that appreciate scratching, beat juggling, and DJing more than others. DJ’s have always appreciated other DJ’s for what they are doing. In the general population, some people really understand and get it while others are more apathetic to what is really going on up there on stage.

What are your DJ essentials? Any specific program, turntable, headphones, etc. you can’t work without?

I’m most comfortable with a pair of Technic 1200 turntables, a Rane 57 mixer, and Serato. I love Ableton and what it can do. I currently use Ableton for a majority of my pre-production edits and studio work. The Ableton controllers are also crazy! I’ve used just about every headphone out. I go through headphones fairly often. I like the recent additions to Rane mixers. For my production, I use the Native Instruments Maschine. Every beat that was on “The Last Crate” was created in Maschine.

"With the advancement of technology in DJing, the equipment is doing more for you than ever."

"I want to create, motivate, inspire, and influence."

That's what I wrote in June as I set out to develop an all-new GRAE New York. A dozen posts later I felt that initial narrative ended somewhat abruptly, but I was on the verge of yet another chapter in the story of GRAE.

As the autumn crisp arrives, my thematic focus is currently locked on Fall Into Fierce. Right now I'm feeling bold, confident, experimental, and curious. I want this to translate into everything I do from my work to my style to my writing. Throughout the journey I took to achieve Fall Into Fierce the inner PR girl in me began to analyze GRAE New York not only as a blog, but as a lifestyle brand. I realized what makes me the most excited about GRAE is having the platform to showcase the stories of creatives and brands that are up-and-coming, inspiring, support a cause I believe in, or that I find myself just wanting to know more about. As a maven it's in my nature to share my discoveries with anyone I think can connect to them. That was the reason I started blogging in 2005. That's the reason I'm still blogging in 2012. I still want to create, motivate, inspire, and influence, only this this time I want my process to center around a new aesthetic that reflects the state I find myself in now.

We're living in a moment of uncertainty. But it's just that, a moment. We must not place all our attention on worrying about the now. We must focus on bettering and presenting our authentic selves for what's to come. While autumn continues to set in, I invite you to join GRAE New York as we move forward. Together we shall transform, adjust, shape, and evolve into the next edition of GRAE. Be a maven and tell your friends. xo. Like the sign says GRAE New York will be back soon. Fall 2012 to be specific. Date unknown, but gear up.

There’s nothing like a heat wave during Fourth of July weekend to make you wonder what the rest of summer will feel like. As I try to keep cool with my chamomile mint tea in hand (No, not iced. Yes, irony is my life.), I’ve decided to take a slight summer hiatus from GRAE New York to revamp the site and focus on other things that need tending – mainly my new PR consulting business (exciting), NYLON’s music issue (brilliant), and Hilary Duff’s book series (addictive).

As you know, GRAE New York’s a one-woman show and I can’t do it all (though I try), so this summer GRAE posts will be about topics I really feel strongly about. Everything else I think needs to be on your radar can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest so stay cool as you’re liking, tweeting, and pinning away! If you come across something in your travels that needs to be on my radar, email it to gnyinbox@gmail.com.

Style and swag are two different things. Just because you’re wearing a killer outfit doesn’t mean you have swag. Just because you have swag doesn’t mean you can put together a killer outfit. But what do you wear if you have both? 7:30 Apparel.

Designed by T.L.S. (Tanaka Leroy Samukange), 7:30’s graffiti-inspired gear appeals to skaters, musicians, and men and women looking to update their wardrobe with standout streetwear. With roots planted firmly in hip hop culture, 7:30 even has their own theme song I Got My Gear On by T.L.S. featuring Tazziey and Kripmac. Download the track: Mediafire
Here are the GRAE faves from 7:30’s current offerings.

Lana Del Rey does her best Jackie O in "National Anthem"

Although I know the words to The Star-Spangled Banner, I always thought the national anthem should be God Bless America. It's much livelier, not to mention easier to remember. Of course I changed my mind once Lana Del Rey released a song called National Anthem on her self-titled debut album back in January. Who doesn't want to hear "I'm your national anthem. God, you're so handsome. Take me to the Hamptons, Bugatti Veyron" before every major sporting event? I'd love to see Kelly Clarkson belt that one out at the next Superbowl.

We should start a petition. While I do that, Ms. Del Rey released the video for National Anthem a week before today's Independence Day festivities. It features Lana as a Marilyn/Jackie O hybrid and A$AP Rocky as JFK. If I was Lana I would have cast Drake as my leading man since he's more presidential material to me. I mean have you seen him in the pages of GQ rockin' a suit? So sleek, but to each her own. Let's not forget A$AP Rocky's debut album LongLiveA$AP is due out on September 11th, and Lana's featured on KickDrums-produced track Ridin. She probably thought it was a good idea to return the favour and gave her friend a cameo.

Enjoy the video & have a happy 4th! #SupportTheTroops
Listening to Justin Bieber’s latest album Believe for the past week brought me back to the summer of 2001 when I was counting down the days to my 13th birthday and boy bands (NSYNC & O-Town, sorry BSB) and pop princesses (hey Britney! hey Mandy!) ruled my world. For those of you who I’ve now epically confused, what I’m trying to say is Believe is a fun, youthful addition to my iPod that makes me nostalgic for the days when I instantly fell in love with every sugary sweet pop song on the radio.

Bieber’s definitely grown since his One Less Lonely Girl days. Sonically Believe is a strong pop record for JB to show his range and give us a taste of what else he’s capable of. Elements of electro, hip hop, dubstep, and acoustic rock are all present, as are guest appearances from hip hop’s finest: Ludacris, Big Sean, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. Vocally Bieber reminds me of Justin Timberlake with touches of MJ. His voice is never buried underneath layers of auto-tune and 808s, so you can actually hear how his vocals have evolved over the past few years.

Content-wise, Believe tells tales of young love, hope, and the downside of fame. The standout track appears at the very end when Bieber addresses the woman who claimed he fathered her child last year. Now this my friends is a genius move, and the production is so well-executed by Darkchild. Maria really allows Bieber to get his MJ on in an album closer that I’m referring to as Billie Jean for the younger set. When it’s over you’re left wanting more where that came from. It’s a total cliffhanger for what we can expect next from Bieber.

Believe isn’t an album that lacks focus and tries to accomplish too much in 16 tracks. It’s a smooth, cohesive transition from Bieber’s teen to young adult years that will broaden his audience. I’m already excited to hear how Bieber will continue to update his sound in the years to come, but until then I have Believe to tide me over.

Last week two music videos surfaced with cameos from two of my fave actors: Shia LaBeouf and Daniel Radcliffe.

In Sigur Rós' Fjogur Piano Shia plays ... well I'm not exactly sure, but he's naked and in drag when he actually does have "clothes" on. (FYI, it's an arthouse film style video.) Shia also doing a bit of modern dance at one point, which makes me think some of his mother's training with Martha Graham rubbed off on him.

In Slow Club's Beginners Dan's drunk and twirling around a bar in a printed shirt I kind of want to borrow as he lip syncs to the song.

Who do you think has the hotter cameo: LaBeouf in the buff or Daniel the drunkard? I must side with Shia seeing as we were known as "Shariah" a few years ago (by me ... and like 1 friend) and he had the balls (<strike>no</strike> pun intended) to go nude and wear drag. Anything for art.

GRAE's Guide to Summer 2012: Channel Surfing

When it comes to summer shows I like them full of laughs, drama, and six packs.

Before Mob Wives Chicago, I had never seen an episode of Mob Wives. Yes, I enjoy Big Ang in interviews, but I have no clue who the rest of the women are. Instead of jumping in after 2 seasons, I can just start from the beginning with Mob Wives Chicago. After reading The Flappers: Vixen by Jillian Larkin, I’m totally into the whole Chicago mob culture. I watched the Mob Wives pilot last week thanks to an iTunes preview, and the storyline I’m concerned with the most is Nora’s. She was never given the chance to bury her father Frank "The German" Schweihs. Now she’s back in town and trying to put the pieces together. I hope she gets the closure she needs. Mob Wives Chicago airs on VH1 on Sundays at 8 p.m.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get involved in another “teen” drama, but any show with ballerinas and Dirty Dancing alumni is fine by me (hey, Kelly Bishop, don’t put any of your ballerinas in the corner). Sutton Foster is perfectly cast as the Vegas showgirl who unexpectedly finds herself married in a small California town. I also have to follow the storyline for "Boo", a ballerina with a lot of heart who struggles with her weight. As a girl who quit ballet after a term and a half out of (now-regrettable) boredom, I can’t help but root for her.

When he’s not taking it off for the ladies in Magic Mike, Matt Bomer’s kicking off season 4 of White Collar on the run from the Feds. What will become of Neil, how will Peter handle it, and how Mozzie get Neil out of this mess? All those questions will be answered Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on USA Network starting on July 10th.

I’ve been obsessed with Piper Perabo ever since she played bartending beauty Violet in Coyote Ugly. (Sidenote: Piper now has a restaurant in SoHo called Jack's Wife Freda.) When season 2 ended, Annie was about to tell Auggie she liked him when he handed her the keys to the dream car he’ll never get to drive and she kept her mouth shut. Will she finally admit her feelings this season? I sure hope so. I need a couple camera shots of Auggie’s six pack to get me through the summer. Season 3 kicks off on USA Network July 10th at 10 p.m.

Awkward

Who doesn’t have awkward moments in high school? If you’re Jenna Hamilton, your awkward moments are stuff of legend. When we last left our charming leading lady, Jenna found out her mother was the one who wrote the mysterious note that started it all. As season 2 commences, will Jenna forgive mommy dearest? Only time will tell. Starting on June 28th, season 2 of Awkward airs every Thursday on MTV at 10:30 p.m.

Jane By Design

From Jane’s quirkiness to India’s bitterness to Billy’s hotness, the second half of Jane By Design’s first season just keeps getting better. I can’t wait for Teri Hatcher to drop in as Jane’s long-lost mother. So scandalous! Jane By Design airs on ABC Family every Tuesday at 9 p.m.

Pretty Little Liars

This season our favorite Pretty Little Liars have got their #Agame on. Don’t they always? I don’t know how the writers are able to keep us so caught up in all the suspense. It’s really well done. My only wish is they show Tyler Blackburn more, preferably shirtless. What? Keegan Allen's six pack can't hog all the camera time, and it’s not like I’m asking for them to use GRAE New York as a clue. Tune into PLL on ABC Family every Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Single Ladies

When I heard that Stacey Dash wasn’t returning for season 2 of Single Ladies, I was pissed. She was the only reason I had watched the show in the first place, and by default she played my fave character. In her place we now have Denise Vasi as Raquel, a sassy character I can actually relate to. After years of playing it safe and doing what her parents wanted, Raquel is ready to get her independent business woman on. Aren’t we all? Raquel’s likeability certainly isn’t hurt by her hookup with Cuban hottie William Levy. So spicy! Check out Single Ladies on VH1 every Monday at 9 p.m.

So You Think You Can Dance

I can’t believe So You Think You Can Dance is already in its 9th season! I sort of missed season 8 because of my work schedule last summer, so this year I’m not missing a step. Right now the show’s focusing on Vegas Week, and I’m pulling for Cyrus and Alexa to make it to the top 20. Those 2 are unreal, especially Cyrus. I hope Adam Shankman snatches him up for Step Up 5 (because you know there’ll be one). So You Think You Can Dance airs on FOX each Wednesday at 8 p.m., and the results show airs on Thursdays.

GRAE's Guide to Summer 2012: Well Read

There’s nothing like settling down with a good book at the park, at the beach, or on the downtown 6 train. Here a couple of good reads you may want to add to your booklist this summer.

Fifty Shades, the trilogy by E.L. James

Fifty Shades of Grey. Fifty Shades Darker. Fifty Shades Freed. Yes, yours truly read all three in a week and a half. Scandalous right? Well, I don’t think so. I was more into the recent grad trying to sort her life out storyline than the “scandalous” sex scenes the media and housewives of America keep focusing on. If you’re too embarrassed to whip these books out in public, that’s what the Nook, Kindle, and iPad are for.

The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson

Since The Rum Diary is now a movie with newly-single Johnny Depp, I felt the need to read the book that started it all before watching the movie (which I still haven’t seen). Now I’m obsessed with Hunter S. Thompson’s gonzo style, and I have Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, on my must-read list.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

If you ask me what my favorite book is, I’ll reply The Great Gatsby without hesitation. I first read it in high school, and I instantly fell in love with the Roaring 20s. Over the years I forgot why I loved Gatsby so much and with the movie remake due this Christmas, I figured now was as good a time as any to reread it. I think it’s Fitzgerald’s modern writing style mixed with the narrator’s assertiveness about the crowd around him that make this an enjoyable read for me. (Sidenote: This is the first book I’ve ever reread. Yes, EVER.)

The Drunk Diet: How I Lost 40 Pounds ... Wasted: A Memoir by Lüc Carl

Yes, I read a book by GaGa’s ex. No, it’s not about GaGa or binge-drinking to lose weight. The Drunk Diet gives us a look into how Lüc Carl became the sexy rock n’ rolla he is today. Lüc’s stories are so in your face and a total kick in the ass if you’re looking to drop your crappy diet this summer. Lüc’s very upfront about how he incorporated healthier habits into his life slowly, but surely. I like how he breaks everything down for the readers and compares his body to a hot rod. I follow Lüc on Twitter now, and the dude's a machine.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling

I don’t watch The Office, but from the handful of interviews I’ve seen and read with Mindy Kaling, I instantly love her. She’s so charming, and I’m so excited she has her own show on FOX this fall. Of course I had to read her autobiography. Her anecdotes about her weight, her family, and her career are hilarious. This is a great light read if you’re looking for a laugh this summer.

Bossypants by Tina Fey

I feel like I’m the only one who hasn’t read Tina Fey’s book yet, which is why I’m currently 70 pages in and loving it! Tina’s so witty, something I learned quickly from her SNL heydays. I miss when she was their head writer there. I’m still holding out hope she’ll return to the helm once again when 30 Rock’s over next season. A girl can dream.

GRAE's Guide to Summer 2012: Filmstrip

Maybe it’s the heat that makes me delusional, but when it comes to summer movies I like them indie and I like them campy. This year, 4 movies fit that bill.

Magic Mike

Whose idea was it to browse through People’s Sexiest Men Alive issues to cast a movie about male strippers? That person will hereby be known as a genius on GRAE New York. Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, Matthew McConaughey, and Alex Pettyfer all appear on the big screen in various states of undress. I’m sure many girls night out and bachelorette parties will revolve around the June 29th release date.

Step Up Revolution

The fourth Step Up movie (yes, the fourth), is taking the series to the mean streets of South Beach. If you’re like me, you’re uber-excited to see So You Think You Can Dance alums like Kathryn McCormick, Phillip Chbeeb, and Stephen "Twitch" Boss pop-lock-and-droppin’ it in Miami. I hear Adam Sevani, a.k.a. Moose, will also be making a comeback. Who else is wondering if Flo Rida will be doing an epic theme song for this one too? Step Up Revolution hits the big screen on July 27th and you know I’ll be there.

2 Days in New York

I've been obsessed with Julie Delpy ever since I saw her alongside Ethan Hawke in 2004's Before Sunset. I can't wait to see her and Chris Rock in 2 Days in New York, an indie she not only wrote and stars in, but directed. Yes, Delpy's a triple threat and a brilliant one at that. I hope she and Hawke find time this summer to write the follow-up to Before Sunset as she gears up for the August 10th release of 2 Days in New York.

Pitch Perfect

For those of you who miss Glee in the summer months and/or wish you sang in a college chorus, there’s a movie for you. It’s called Pitch Perfect, and somehow Anna Kendrick is the lead actress. Wasn’t she in a movie with Clooney that was nominated for multiple Oscars? Shouldn’t she be in anything but this, preferably a Woody Allen film, right now? Anyway, I’m not complaining (too much). The girl can sing, and I can’t wait to see her break it down to Blackstreet’s No Diggity. So random, but that’s how I like ‘em. Pitch Perfect comes out on October 5th which technically makes this a fall release, but I'm sure there'll be some lingering summer heat in the atmosphere.

GRAE's Guide to Summer 2012: Style Statement

When you look good, you feel good. Here are all the elements you need to craft your summer playlist.

Yuna

Yuna ended up on my radar after she teamed up with Pharrell. I'm loving her self-titled debut album right now. It's just what you need to cool you down as the mercury rises.

Hot Track: Live Your Life

John Mayer

Mr. Mayer's latest album Born & Raised just sounds like Americana should. It's the perfect soundtrack for that summer road trip you've been meaning to take.

Hot Track: Shadow Days

ZZ Ward

If you follow the GRAE New York on last.fm, you'll notice ZZ Ward my most-listened to artist right now. I love her sultry singer-songwriter vibe. ZZ's mixtape Eleven Roses is perfect as long days turn into even longer nights. Download it for free on Soundcloud.

Hot Track: Got It Bad

Robin Skouteris

I love a good mashup, especially when Robin Skouteris is involved. Yesterday Robin released his 6th album Reincarnation featuring snippets from Lana Del Rey, Nancy Sinatra, Radiohead, Lady GaGa, and more. Download links are up on Robin's Facebook page now: link

Hot Track: The Gang Bang Theory

If you haven't heard, today's the first day of summer 2012. Of course I can't let you go through summer unprepared. The song's the first single from Yeezy's collab album Cruel Summer, also the name of his debut film with his company DONDA.

Directed by Nabil Elderkin, the Mercy vid also features Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz. The video's very understated and the special effects aren't overdone. What draws me to it most is when Big Sean says "swerve" in the hook of the song. Random, I know.
I was just burnt out and felt like GRAE New York was getting stale and needed to be revamped so I closed up shop for a bit and made it my mission to get re-inspired to create. I immersed myself in The Daily Love, Top Shelf Network, The Well Daily, xoJane, the Fifty Shades trilogy, Mad Men seasons 1-4 on DVD, How Sweet It Is, wine classes, and Woody Allen films with ScarJo.

As May rolls into June the timing just feels right for a comeback. I’m ready to write a new chapter for GRAE. Everything just feels so … different. Maybe different’s not the right word; let’s go with fresh with a touch of nostalgia. I’m longing to find and share innovative ideas. From art, design, wellness, and style to books, films, music, and shows, I feel like I’m experiencing it all through a new set of eyes.

Over the coming weeks you’re going to notice a shift in content. I want to create, motivate, inspire, and influence. Posts are going to be more diverse and well-written. I want to focus on people and stories you may not hear about instead of what everyone else is talking about to “change the conversation” as Don Draper would say.

I’ll also be utilizing GRAE New York’s Facebook page more for topics I want to share with you that I don’t want to write full-out posts for. I’ve already started doing that for the past couple weeks, and I’ve already noticed a slight increase in the number of fans. A major “Thank You” goes out to all who like and comment on the Facebook page, follow me on Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube, and comment on the blog.

So the next phase of GRAE begins now. Keep reading …

Yesterday up-and-coming actor Ersan Barams shared how he got into acting and what he’s learned about the business. Today he’s back with the 411 on his new online sketch comedy show Mild & Content. Here’s what Ersan had to say.

How did the idea for Mild & Content come about?

It was around August/September of 2011 and I was still working at Midtown Comics and I was just fed up with working a job I wasn’t happy in. I wanted to do something where I felt like I could not only be a part of, but I could call my own and make my ideas come to life because I had so many ideas and thoughts just swirling in my head and I wanted to find a means to put all that on video. So I just up and quit my job and began developing ideas for a funny sketch comedy show, and I already had a YouTube account so it kinda just fell into place. So technically Mild & Content made me quit my job!

Most of your episodes feature friends of yours like Pedro and Lee. How involved are they with the creative process? Do they collaborate with you when you’re writing each sketch, or do you come up with the ideas on your own?

I’ve known Lee since 2007 and Pedro since 2010. Lee I worked with previously on acting projects and we continue to remain in contact whenever he wants to shoot something. I showed him a few episodes and he loved them and wanted to direct an episode of Mild & Content, so I figured why not have him direct a milestone episode like episode 10. Pedro has been there since the beginning, so he is very involved with coming up with sketches/ideas for the show and we keep in constant contact when coming up/developing sketches.

Mild & Content is 11 episodes in. How long does it take you to put together each one?

Typically about a day, we develop the ideas during the week and when we are both free (which seem to be on Saturdays) we come together and rehearse which skits are for the next episode and just shoot it. I’ve noticed the more episodes we’ve done the longer it takes to shoot because of how in depth we have made the sketches.

You play a variety of characters on Mild & Content. Where does the inspiration come from for each one? Which is your favorite one to play?

Most of the characters on the show are real people that I have either come across or have known for years. Some still don’t know I use them on the show, but it’s all in good spirit. I enjoy playing the Anthony character the most, because his character is intense in real life so I try to pay homage to him on the show and emulate him to the best of my ability.

EW is an allusive presence on the show, kind of like the mysterious A on Pretty Little Liars. Will we ever find out who EW is, or are you going to keep viewers guessing?

That’s something I continue to fight with myself about, do I reveal who EW is? And if so, when is the appropriate time to reveal EW to the audience. I want to keep EW going for as long as I can before the idea becomes bland. Only a handful of people know who EW really is, and if the stars align correctly, I’d love to reveal EW in a big way. I guess only time will tell.

Lionel Richie has made “guest appearances” on Mild & Content from time to time. Why did you choose him?

Pedro and I were in my kitchen developing ideas for an episode and he was playing random Billy Joel and Elton John music. He clicked on Lionel Richie’s Hello music video and was upset with the video from start to finish, commenting about how he was a stalker in it and whatnot. It was then that I decided he [Richie] needed to be a part of the show.

On Mild & Content we’ve seen Hollywood not giving you a shot, giving you a reality check, and closing the door on you. Do you hope Mild & Content will be a way for Hollywood to take notice of you?
This kinda seems to be most YouTubers’ intention, to get your work noticed so that it can be seen and shared by a broader group of people. The idea of getting Hollywood to notice me is really great, and if Mild & Content is what helps garner some attention then perfect, but I would also love for Hollywood to see my hard work and determination first and foremost.

Like yourself, many others are putting their shows on YouTube. Do you think YouTube is the new TV network?

Yes, I do believe YouTube is becoming a TV network to some degree, because the YouTuber knows that it’s the internet and not actually television, but if they want to get away from all the bad reality television that has overtaken TV and watch something on YouTube I say go for it.

In a recent Mild & Content episode, you did a skit about Drake’s motto “YOLO”. What’s your motto?

Stay open and stay true to yourself. In this world, and especially this business, you have to learn to take everything with a grain of salt and not get discouraged when things don’t quiet go your way. As an actor I feel taking a role because the script is great and so are the characters and not necessarily going for the box office hit or because a movie is filming in Hawaii for a month is a prime example of this. But I tell myself as long as I stay open and stay true in the craft and life in general, I can achieve success.

Lucky for me I had Ersan Barams, an up-and-coming actor with his sights set on Hollywood.

Recently I caught up with Ersan for a two-part interview. In part 1 he discusses his budding acting career, the industry, and more.

How did you get into acting?

I originally got into acting because of two reasons. My friend of 8 years, Omar Evans, was originally into acting and found a clipping from a newspaper for an extras agency and showed it to me and I got interested in the idea of acting. Also, coincidently Omar was with me as well, when I went to see Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, I remember telling myself, “wow wouldn’t it be cool if I acted on film.” That’s how I got into acting.

A few years ago you were on the Discovery Channel reality show Oddities. What did you learn from that experience?

What I learned from being on Oddities was how “Hollywood” or “the business” really works. It isn’t just about acting. More effort and work goes into actually making a production happen, getting approved by the network executives as to what can and cannot be put on camera. Also it gave me a sense of how a set really works, and gave me a feeling of naturalness on camera.

What’s the best piece of acting advice you’ve ever received?

To act is to not act, rather to become the character in question.

Which actors have careers you would like to emulate?

Jim Carrey and Leonardo DiCaprio are two of my favorite actors of all time; their work as artists continues to inspire me to continue to pursue acting as a profession.

Do you prefer doing comedy or drama?

Oddly enough I prefer drama over comedy. I feel that my range as an actor can increase when I do more dramatic roles rather than comedy, but comedy is in my being so I can never steer too far away from comedy.

Could you see yourself doing a major sketch comedy show like SNL someday?

Yes, most of my jokes and an overall sense of who I am came from watching Saturday Night Live, also All That on Nickelodeon. To actually be a player on SNL would be a great honor and give me a great feeling to know that I am on a show that other great comedians were on.

What’s your dream role, and who would you like to work with?

I don’t really have a dream role per se, but winning an Academy Award is one award I would love to win and be so honored as an artist to achieve; so whatever role wins me that award, then that will be my dream role.

Jim Carrey hands down. He’s still young and I would love to work with him and learn from him.

Make sure you check back tomorrow for part 2 of my sit-down with Ersan where he talks about his new sketch comedy show “Mild & Content”. In the meantime, follow him on Twitter @ersanbarams and subscribe to his YouTube channel.
Before The Wanted and One Direction were UK imports, I had my sights set on European boy band Lexington Bridge ... more specifically Lexington Bridge member Jerome Simeon. Like the rest of the boy bands I liked, LXB dissolved after a few years. Lucky for me, the boys went their separate ways in the Twitter age so I was still able to follow Jerome's whereabouts.

Now embarking on a solo career, Jerome's currently going by the stage name Romie Hawk. No, that's not an inside joke about his trademark mohawk ... I think. Romie just released his new single Take Me Away and his vocals reminded me instantly of a George Michael redux. Watch the video below.

I think we can all agree that Chuck’s a computer genius. He was part of the Buy More’s Nerd Herd after all. His computer skills certainly came in handy in the Season 5 episode Chuck Versus the Hack Off. By hacking into a computer system, Chuck helped his team grab the computer virus Omen.

While I’m not a hacker, I do have my own set of computer skills, though they’re mainly social media-related. For those of you who don’t know, I’m a bona fide social media addict. I got into social media as a hobby, but as the years have gone by it’s become a major part of my job as a freelance consultant. My social media skills have definitely helped me get a lot of jobs over the years. I remember my first job out of college was at a sustainable toy company. I was the Social Media Coordinator. Not to toot my own horn, but in just 6 months I was able to increase the startup’s social media presence and online following.

I guess you could say I’m a computer genius in my own way, though I’m pretty sure Chuck has me beat. To relive Chuck saving the day with his computer skills, order Chuck: The Complete Fifth Season on DVD and Blu-Ray.

One of my favorite moments from Chuck took place in the series finale. Sitting side by side on the beach, Sarah asked Chuck to tell her a story. Because of the Intersect Sarah had lost her memory so Chuck proceeded to tell her about the past 5 years of their lives.

Chuck and Sarah are one of my favorite TV couples of all-time. I’ve watched them go from working together to Chuck falling for Sarah to Sarah finally falling for Chuck to the two of them finally getting married and starting their own business. I really feel invested in their love so I was sad when Sarah couldn’t remember anything about it. I really hope Chuck’s story helped all the memories to come flooding back to her because they’re definitely not to be forgotten.
