We recently started new message series at Gracepoint Berkeley called Pause. Pastor Ed Kang brought us a message from 2 Samuel 11:1-11 about how sin is so deceptive and dangerous and about the typical ways that we fall into sin. We started the message series with a humorous video illustration about the attitudes that we often have towards sin and evil and where such attitudes lead us.

The inspiration for this illustration was actually a message illustration used by Pastor Joshua Harris of Covenant Life Church. Check out a clip of his message below.

Just in case you thought the post title was about alphabet soup, let me tell you that this post is about International Graduate Student Ministry’s Graduate Student Welcome Night trailers. As a former graduate student myself, I especially like the second trailer. I’m not sure if graduate student life really lives up to the words used to describe it in that video, but one thing is for sure – graduate student life is mind-blowing. UC Berkeley graduate students are among the smartest people you’ll ever meet, and it’s amazing and a privilege that the members of IGSM get to dialogue with their peers about spiritual matters and Christianity.

Sierra Lodge Glory

Have you ever seen film Glory? It came out in 1989 and it was about the deeds of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War. The 54th was one of the first US Army units made up entirely of African American soldiers, and the movie gives us an inspiring look at these men who lived lives of such dignity and honor when everyone around them treated them with such dishonor. If you’ve seen it, then you must remember the climax of that movie with the brave men of the 54th charging straight into enemy fire.

This post, however, does not portray actually scenes from the movie. It’s an interesting clip that was made at an outing at Sierra Lodge this past winter, and although it doesn’t quite capture the inspirational quality of the real movie, it’s still pretty good. A hearty thanks to the brothers and sisters of Gracepoint Berkeley who put the work into building Sierra Lodge so that we could have such memory-making moments.

P.S. I actually highly recommend watching the real Glory movie. It really is quite excellent and inspiring.

Berkeley NSWN 2010 | Sound, Stage, and Lighting

In another post featuring the New Student Welcome Night that was recently hosted by Koinonia, acts2fellowship, and Kairos, on the UC Berkeley campus, I wanted to feature this video giving you a glimpse of what the atmosphere was like there. It’s really amazing the kind of things that these lighting guys and gals do – it’s not just about having a bunch of lights moving around and having the haze machines spit out a lot of haze, but it really involves careful programming and listening to the praise set and going through the skit meticulously so that the lights enhance the atmosphere. On top of that, you have to worry about the power constraints of the circuits and keep track of how many lights you are plugging into each circuit. The venue for NSWN, Wheeler Auditorium, had many power constraints and that awesome light fixture in the back is actually a low-power element that they put together for this event.

We’ve come a long way from having Bible studies at Mister Donut – praise God for the salvation work that he has done in the lives of our precious Taiwanese brothers and sisters, and let’s continue to pray for them and the ministry in Taiwan.

Check out this video that Andy from Gracepoint Hsinchu made of the new office building/fellowship hall/church building that we recently moved into in Taiwan. It’s right across the street from the NCTU campus, and it’s actually on the ground floor of the high-rise apartment campus where some of our team members live. It’s sure to be place where a lot of memory-making moments will be made in the years to come – and it looks like it’s also home to the most devastating Gracepoint kitchen this side of Sierra Lodge.
