Flash Mobs - when the crowd starts to dance

The internet is a wonderful thing. There seems to be literally no end to the number of ways it effects our lives. For me, the latest delight is the fast spreading phenomenon of flash mobs. This is where a number of people come together to suddenly appear and perform something unusual - typically in a public place. Here's a collection of my favourite flash mobs. For me it first started when I saw this video on youtube where people suddenly appear and start dancing to "Do Re Mi" (from the cult hit musical Sound of Music) at Antwerp station. What really got me is that they appear, they perform and they dissolve back into the crowd as quickly as they appear. How exciting!

I saw this happen once again (this time in quick succession) after the pop icon Michael Jackson died. I noticed scores of flash mob dance tributes quickly popping up on the internet. The one below is one of the several dozen which quickly popped up. Oh what fun!

So, how do you take part in one? Simple, keep searching popular channels such as youtube or facebook for someone proposing one. Then there are also specific websites like Flashmob UK with links to events around the world. There's usually a rehearsal video that gets uploaded. Practice at home and show up at the decided time. And enjoy! Here's a video of one such rehearsals.

Of course, advertizing gurus were quick to notice the potential of this phenomenon. Here's T-mobile doing a flash mob at the Liverpool Station in London. Looks like good fun!

The movement started to spread with more and more people in different countries doing this. Here's one of my favourites from Mumbai to a particularly catchy bollywood tune

Then there's this one from Dubai Airport. I particularly enjoy watching the expressions of bystanders - first surprised and then having fun.

One from Sydney Australia adding flavour with some excellent Irish dancing.

Of course, not everyone used the same concept. Creative people made more improvement. Here's a wicked example from NYC where a large group of people download a MP3 from the internet and follow instructions to flash mob

And why stop at doing this outdoors. Here's a class where students decided to do this indoors - in a anthropology class. Couldn't think of a better way to study cultures :)

I hope this spreads even more and we see more and more creative variants. I, for one, cant seem to get enough of watching these videos.

Black and White hits from 1937 to 1958

I usually don’t post contents of email forwards. But this one is special. It’s a large collection of links to Hindi songs from the black and white era between 1937 to 1958. This period is considered to be golden by hard-core fans of the golden Hindi oldies. I have posted the list mostly “as-is” and the original author is unknown.

The reason I am posting this collection of links is that it points to the very best combination of the talent in the Hindi film industry at the time (and no! It was not known as Bollywood back then).

The immortality of the magical combination of voice, lyrics and music is apparent by that it continues to live in the memory of people born 2 generations after!

Oh and yes, the picture above depicts a scene from the 1935 black and white hit Devdas starring the pictured Kundan Lal Saigal and Jamuna Barua (see full info).

I am almost half the way through the list (and plan to loop back to the top) and am really enjoying it. So here’s to sharing the good stuff!

Doodling a stranger

I though I’d share a a small sketch I recently made while doodling on the back of a used envelope. I make quite a few of these, but they rarely end up looking human (I am particularly bad at making the lips).

As to who this is? This was someone who came by to drop off a parcel at my door. I didn’t ask for his name.

Free Legal Advise of all sorts

I was looking through some information on the web and I found these couple of extremely valuable websites on the topic of legal advise.

I thought I should share them here:

Immigration Advisory Services (IAS) [website]
One of UKs biggest law-advise providing charities. They seem to provide free immigration related advise to those who cant afford it and non-profit fee-based for those just about can. They have telephone based service too.
Office of Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC) [website]
The regulating body for Immigration legal advisers. It is generally wise to ensure that your immigration lawyer is registered with them. You can also file complaints about immigration advisers here.
Community Legal Aid [website]
Free, confidential and independent legal advise on literally everything. Their website is also rich with easy to access information. A good example is "What are my rights if I was made redundant?". You can also ask for their advise on phone, etc. provided you are eligible for it.
Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) – [website]
A volunteer-based charity that offers advise on a wide range of topics. Note that I have not directly used any of the above websites and have come to know of them through people who have or via various forums that I troll. Please feel free to correct or add to the above.

Spring is my favourite season simply because it follows the dull winter season and is filled with a fresh burst of life and colours. The picture on the right should give you an idea of what i mean!

Making simple but colourful drawings using Microsoft Paintbrush software is one of my pet hobbies. These “digital doodles” are often inspired by whatever I see or read. I never spend more than 5 to 10 minutes on this, but i always set the result up as my desktop picture for the next few days :)

I came across the one below when I was searching through my backups. This was made in March 2008 and was inspired by the sight of a earthworm slithering away in my garden.

Immortal “Natya Sangeet” by Asha Bhosale

The Marathi language has a rich tradition of literature and music. One of the richest veins of Marathi music flows in the form of “Natya Sangeet” which quite literally translates to “Drama Music”. These are songs that were sung by characters during Theatre plays.

These songs were based on classical or semi-classical Indian music and were sung often without the aid of modern-day aids such as microphones and speakers. As a result, the singers often needed power vocal chords in addition to formal training in Indian classical music.

The tradition of such songs continues to be very popular in the Marathi speaking population around the world. Below are a select few examples that have all been sung by Asha Bhosale, a legend in Indian film music, in honour of her father Master Deenanath Mangeshkar – a stalwart of the Natya Sangeet tradition:

Chandrika Hi Janoo (from Sangeet Manapaman)

Vilopala Madhumilanat Ya (from Bramhakumari)

Yuvati Mana Darun (from Sangeet Manapaman)

This list is endless. In the recent days, the Natya Sangeet tradition appears to have been given a fresh breath of life by a new generation of artists.

I sincerely hope future generations are able to enjoy these gems as much as I have!

Bollywood Movie Review: Rajneeti (2010)

Rajneeti is a political thriller starring Katarina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar and many other stars (+1).

Story is loosely influenced by The Godfather and the Indian epic Mahabharata, which makes it pretty predictable.

Positives: Great acting all around (+3), top-notch direction by Director-producer Prakash Jha (+2) and overall decent entertainment (+1).

Negatives: Completely forgettable and some terribly sung songs, Kat Kaif still can't seem to shake off her Brit Accent, unnecessary kissing scenes (even by Nasaeeruddin Shah, why?!), quite a few holes in the story and to make it worse story loses steam in the end!

Score: 7/10.
Rating: Certainly Worth a watch.

Hinduism and Wikipedia Gold

Here are some articles that have achieved on are on the way of achieving a Good Article (GA) status – a bench mark of well rounded topic coverage on Wikipedia.

As to why I am listing them? Simply they make an interesting read. So, if you are a fellow bibliophile (lover of books or reading) and that too on a variety of topics, then these promise a good time for you. The broad category I have chosen today, to list articles related to, is Hinduism.

Themes in Avatar
The blockbuster has provoked vigorous discussion of a wide variety of cultural, social, political, and religious themes identified by critics and commentators, and the film's writer and director James Cameron has responded that he hoped to create an emotional reaction and to provoke public conversation about these topics. This article specifically discusses these themes. An example is this section on parallels with religions like Hinduism.

Mohini
The only female avatar (form) of Lord Vishnu, Mohini is the femme fatale and the enchantress who maddened lovers, sometimes leading them to their doom. She first appears in in the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) Hindu narrative. Her legend became popular has since been expanded on in several text and is celebrated in art forms like dance, sculpture, paintings, etc.

What I found striking about this article is the diversity of the images it contains. The image on the right, for instance, is a painting titled “Mohini on a swing” by the iconic Raja Ravi Varma in 1894.

Pitru Paksha
Quite literally means “the fortnight of forefathers”. It’s a 16-day period when Hindus pay homage to their forefather in the form of food offerings. Hindu astrology considers this an inauspicious period and warns against performing important actions (such as starting something new) in this period.

The associated ritual is widely practiced by Hindus all over the world and is symbolic of of the significance of death-related rituals in the Hindu philosophy.

As a practicing Hindu, I have found this article to contain quite a few things I was not aware of.

Dhumavati
Her name literally translates as “the smoky one”. She is one of the ten mahavidya’s (great knowledge) or one of the 10 tantric goddesses – each a representation of the Hindu divine mother. Unusually so, she is often described as an old ugly widow and is associated with all thing inauspicious and unattractive in Hinduism. But her ugly form teaches one of look beyond the outer appearance and look inward to seek the inner truth.

She is believed to uniquely appear at the time of cosmic dissolution and between the time of dissolution and creation. She is also the giver of supernatural powers, rescuers from all troubles and and granter of all desires (especially salvation). She is a vital figure in Tantric worship and rituals.

I found this particular figure in sharp contrast to the beautiful graceful looking representations of almost all Hindu figures.

Chhinnamasta
Her name literally translates to “She who’s head is severed” (with good reason as the accompanying picture will show). Like Dhumavati above, she is one of the ten mahavidya’s. She is also recognized by Buddhists as Chinnamunda.

This goddess is usually associated with the concept of self-sacrifice and the awakening of spiritual energy (or Kundalini). She is also symbolizes self-control on sexual desire and embodies sexual energy (in case you haven’t noticed she’s standing on a couple having sex in the accompanying picture – look carefully).

Like Dhumavati, her worship is restricted to Tantric practioners and Yogis. Her temples are rare, but usually found in Northern India and Nepal.

The man who tried to kill Hitler

I first wrote about the movie based on the actions of Col. Stauffenberg, the man who unsuccessfully tried to assassinate Hitler, way back in 2007 (see original post). The movie – Valkyrie was released in 2008 and stars Tom Cruise (as Col. Stauffenberg), Kenneth Branagh (as Maj. Gen. Tresckow) and Bill Nighy (as Gen. Friedrich Olbricht) among others.

Today I managed to finally watch the movie after much delay. And I must say that it was certainly worth the wait! Although I feel there could have been better actors to play the role of Col. Stauffenberg, Tom Cruise has put in a decent performance. The rest of the cast is just marvellous. What struck me the most was the feeling of being able to look back in time, at the sights and sounds of the then Nazi Germany.

What moved me in particular was the actual story. I don’t know how faithful it is to the original, but it has been put in quite a gripping fashion. The name of the film is drawn from Operation Valkyrie (Unternehmen Walküre in German) – an emergency plan to ensure continuity of government operation developed by the German territorial army. This plan is central to the story behind the film.

The fact that Hitler survived this plot is general knowledge. But I found the story gripping enough to make me forget that until almost the very end. I couldn't help but finish watching this movie with a sense of admiration for the conviction of the leading characters.

Another highlight of this movie was the background scores. My favourite is the title track named “They’ll remember you” by John Ottmann.

For those who enjoy watching historical war-time dramas, this movie comes highly recommended – from me.

Can a NRI vote in the Indian Elections?

I was looking at a news article about Indian elections and the thought suddenly popped into my mind – can any NRI (short for Non-resident Indian) cast his or her vote living outside the country?

Strangely, I could not find a single website run by the Indian government that could answer this question (please let me know if you do!). So I turned to my attention to Wikipedia and found the answer there:

As of now, India does not have an absentee ballot system. Section 19 of The Representation of the People Act (RPA)-1950 allows a person to register to vote if he or she is above 18 years of age and is an ‘ordinary resident’ of the residing constituency i.e. living at the current address for 6 months or longer. Section 20 of the above Act disqualifies a non-resident Indian (NRI) from getting his/her name registered in the electoral rolls. Consequently, it also prevents an NRI from casting his/her vote in elections to the Parliament and to the State Legislatures.

The Representation of the People (Amendment) 2006 Bill was introduced in the Parliament by Shri Hanraj Bharadwaj, Minister of Law and Justice during February 2006 with an objective to amend Section 20 of the RPA-1950 to enable NRIs to vote. Despite the report submitted by the Parliamentary Standing Committee two years ago, the Government has so far failed to act on the recommendations. The Bill was reintroduced in the 2008 budget session of the Parliament to the Lok Sabha. But no action taken once again.

So, in a nutshell, until section 20 of the RPA (see above) is amended – the answer to my question is – NO.

Security Issue with Lycatalk

Lycatalk is a popular international calling service offering calls to different countries at a competitive rate. I have been a fairly newish but a happy customer – so far.

But today morning I was on the phone with their customer services and was going through the usual identity checks. I was quite surprised to hear the support person ask me to verify my account password! When i asked him whether he could see my account password, he replied he could (!?!). He was actually able to confirm my correct password for me?

Now, given the fact that most people tend to have the same password for almost all their accounts, it is very disturbing to know that someone can see you account password AND have access to the rest of your personal details such as address, card numbers, etc.

This is also generally against standard security practices. Thinking for the worse, what is to stop a rogue/ex employee using your details on just about any other popular services like Gmail, facebook and even your bank? I will leave the possible consequences to your imagination :-(

Here are a few suggestions for fellow Lycatalk customers:

IMMEDIATE: Please change your Lycatalk password to something that is NOT associated with other accounts.
Consider dropping Lycatalk an email complaining against this situation (i am still trying to find out an email id to do this, the only one I have at present is -- info@Lycatel.com)
When asked for the account password, REFUSE to provide this and ask to be authenticated using alternative means (Cardinal rule of phone-based support - NEVER provide your password to anyone else - EVEN the service provider employees).
If none of the above works, consider switching (anyone has any possible alternatives?)

At the time of writing this post, I have yet to speak to anyone else from Lycatalk or email them about this matter. The last person I have spoken to has been the customer support agent today.

City Views

Last night I was pleasantly surprised to come across the latest episode of my favourite British television drama series about a team of con artists – Hustle.

Apart from the Robin hood of the modern approach, the thing i enjoy most about this series is that it takes you through the various parts of London (both day and night) in the comfort of your sofa.

The screen shot above (series 5 episode 1) captures one such moment. That’s the dome of St. Pauls cathedral on the left hand. Now, I can’t wait to see episode two!

Here’s the Golden Gate Bridge appearing in the latest episode of Stargate Atlantis(Episode 20, Season 5).

Mozilla retiring support for Firefox 2

For all users of Firefox that are still on version 2 (to check if you are: Help >> About Mozilla Firefox). Mozilla has announced that it will be retiring support for Firefox version 2.

What does this mean?
This means that Mozilla will no longer be fixing problems with Firefox 2. It also means this will be the last time an update is available for this version.

So what happens to those of us on Firefox 2?
You need to upgrade to the latest version of Firefox - version 3. The latest version of Firefox can be always be downloaded from Firefox.com. Alternatively, simply click Help >> Check for Upgrades Menu in your Firefox browser.

So what's different about Firefox version 3?
Actually quite a bit. For one, it is a lot faster and lighter in terms of memory use. But here's a list of the new features (in plain English):

Oh and yes, for those of you not on Windows and/or looking for Firefox in your native language, look here:

Is there any way I can try version 3 without upgrading first?
Good question! And the answer is YES. The trick is to use Portable Firefox (what’s portable??). This is available as a single ZIP file. You simply unzip this to a folder and double-click the Firefox icon. That's it! The only restriction is that you can run only one version at a time. Uninstalling is simple. Just delete the folder you unzipped the files to.

Tip: Using this method you can pretty much try every available version of Firefox – even future ones!

Probably one of the most well-known blogs on Indian recipes. What I like about this blog is that the recipes are neatly catalogued and accompanied by some good photographs

A good collection of Indian vegetarian recipes. What is different about this one is that each recipe comes with an accompanying video of the author cooking the particular recipe – the next best thing to having someone walk you through it.

Google Maps UK gets traffic

I've noticed that Google has introduced traffic information ability to it's UK maps. The figure above shows the traffic condition of it's motorway system. It appears to be doing OK as of now ;-)

Free online courses from Stanford University

Stanford University (US) has become the latest one to start offering free courses online. The notable others include IITB (India), MIT (US) and UC Berkley (US).

The Stanford Engineering Everywhere (SEE) portal currently features 10 courses from Stanford's Engineering Department. It encourages students to pick and choose materials of interest and participate in quizzes and exams.

Educators are also encouraged to use the provided matter in their own classrooms. Since these materials have been released under "Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported" License, educators will have the freedom of not just using, but also tailoring the material to suit the students' needs. For more information, visit the SEE website or jump straight to the list of available courses.

It is important to note that while these courses are free for everyone to access and use, students taking these courses should not expect to get any credits or certificates from Stanford University.

Stop being scammed (or cheated) by emails

It is quite common to see emails promising lot of money, announcing that you've won a new car, cure of health problems, asking for donations for patients that are sick, warning of disasters that are about of happen and even offering jobs. An increasing number of people are believing such emails and are getting cheated into handing over money or bank details in exchange for false promises.

The next time you receive such an email and cant believe your luck, think twice. If it is too good to be true - then it is probably too good to be true. As I've said before, take a few minutes to carefully look at the email. Use your favourite search engine to find more information - especially using text from the email, senders email address or the subject of the email. An informal example of such a search can be found in my previous post about the BMW scam email.

Reading the past with Google News Archives

Google has teamed up with several newspapers to make their archives searchable via it's news portal. This means that for some searches you can actually see and search through scanned version of newspapers as they were seen as early as there were newspapers!

For example,see the news article about the first moon landing ever (shown in the screenshot on the right).

Using this is simple

Search for something that has some historic relevance, say "India independence" (without the quotes

The truth behind chain emails

Chain Email (net "slang" for emails that keep getting forwarded a large number of times) or "forwards" are nothing new to those with email accounts. Although interesting (at times), most are usually partly or fully works of fiction. So it's necessary to check your facts before using information from such emails.

An recent example is the email titled "Facts that make every Indian proud". The email claims figures like

There are 3.22 millions of Indians in USA (1.5% of population). YET,
...
36% of NASA scientists are Indians.
38% of doctors in USA are Indians.

According to the Indian magazine Outlook,

The actual figures, it turns out, are a modest five per cent and 10 per cent respectively.

It can be especially embarrassing if these figures are used for formal presentations and they are exposed for what they are. Take the example of Mr. Lalit Mansingh (Indian Ex-ambassador to the US) who went on to quote these in his address to the Womans National Democratic Club in the US!

I understand that if such an email is received from someone you know, then it is a natural tendency to first believe what it says. While this works in real life, I would suggest that you make an exception if that "information" comes in the form of a chain email.

A few important points to remember the next time you forward such an email

Take some time to verify the information you are about to send out. The easiest way to do this is use your favorite search engine and it takes a few minutes. After all, the next person will believe it because it comes from you!
Follow the net-etiquette (courtesies of communicating over the internet) and remove all the "garbage" around the actual content. Particularly remove email addresses, signatures at the end. After all, there's no reason why the next person should see all this information. In my experience the real content is usually only about 10% of the size of the email received :-) Not only does this make the email easier to read, it is also your way to saying that you care!
Use the BCC field when forwarding such emails, unless you have a good reason not to. The BCC (short for Blind Carbon Copy) field is the pretty much the same as the CC (or the Carbon Copy) field, except that the receiving person does not see the email addresses within this field. That way you are protecting the privacy of people you know.

Proud to be Indian!

Today India celebrates having completed 61 years of Independence from the British Empire. I hold my head up proudly as an Indian - thanks to the sacrifices made by countless numbers of freedom fighters back then. I also feel I must acknowledge my gratefulness to the men and women of the Indian armed forces who tirelessly continue to defend our Independence each and everyday!

Plant Cultures

If you are someone who loves a bit of gardening and are also fond of Indian food at the sametime, try growing some plants that are key ingredients in Indian/ Asian recipes.

One such example is the curry plant. Apart from it's culinary importance, this plant also has a long list of medicinal properties. A few of them are

anti-diabetic (good for diabetic patients),
anti-oxidant (improves resistance),
anti-inflammatory (prevents or cures swelling),
hepatoprotective (protects the liver from toxins) and
anti-hypercholesterolemic (helps control cholesterol level)

You can start growing this plant by starting with some cuttings from the curry leaves that available in the market.

Indian students create car that does 100+ miles (180 km) per litre of Petrol

8 mechanical engineering Students from the Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering in Bangalore have developed a car named Garuda (a mythical bird in Hindu/Budhist mythology) that can do 180 kilometers to a litre (or approx 112 miles to a litre).

The students believe that the car will help address current issues like rising fuel costs and reduce pollution. The car was built using locally available parts, some salvaged out of vehicles. The team is confident that with an improved design the car may be able to deliver around 500 kilometers (approx 310.5 miles) to the litre!

The team is looking forward to be the first Indian team participating in international competitions like SAE Supermileage (United States) and Shell Eco Marathon (Britain).
