Sure, you can hit the dollar store and put together paper bags of favors. This could still end up costing a pretty penny if you've got a bunch of kids coming over and the fact is that most of it will end up in the trash.

Instead have the kids make something to take home. Not only will it be something personal but it also makes a great party project. It could be a simple origami project or a friendship bracelet. There are loads of quick craft ideas available on the Internet and it will keep the guests busy with something they will take home. Start when they first arrive and give them construction paper and glue to make their own party hats. Do a Yahoo! or Google search for “birthday crafts” to get a bunch of ideas with instructions.

Since this party is for the kids, you don’t need fancy invitations with gilded envelopes. The invitations you send or give out will be stuck on the refrigerator until after the party and then it will end up in the trash. So don’t waste your money. Get creative and use your computer and printer for a custom invitation. Or hand your child some paper with crayons and colored pencils to come design an invitation and then make color copies.

My subscribers will probably have noticed a significant slow down in the number of posts to this blog. The original title of this post of Good Things For Free. It was possible to get lots of manufacturer samples for free, just by filling in a form with your name and address.

Not any longer. Now, rather than free, there are $ off coupons. Not quite the same thing. Especially when those coupons have to be redeemed at specific stores, like Target or Walmart.

The other new 'gotcha' is that you have to Friend the manufacturer on Facebook. What a great way to get spam thrown to your home page. I guess once Friended you could always Unfriend after your free sample arrives. Is that type of effort worth it to my readers .... tracking whether or not samples have arrived then Unfriend the sender?

I guess this is really a decision everyone has to make for themselves. So I'll be listing the Facebook links for free samples and it will up to you, my reader, if you want to through the whole process.

Remember how, at checkout, you see a little box for Promo Code or Coupon Code and you wish you had one?

Before finishing your checkout, do a Google search on the site's name and the words 'promo code.' With chances good that someone has posted a code, somewhere, for that site, you could end up saving a few bucks with just seconds of work.

What’s a dead zone? It’s a time when no one else wants to fly, like before and after holidays and after spring break. To keep their planes full, airlines sometimes drastically lower their fares.

Typical dead zones are the beginning of November and December and the month of January, after the New Year weekend. (This is also a perfect time to get a great fare on a cruise.) February can also be good as long as you don’t want to fly to Florida, around Valentine’s Day or to the Super Bowl city.
