The more grooves on the face and rough surface created from the Spin Milled process is what gives you that high spin and control from the rough and in wet conditions.

USGA Groove Rules and Regulations
So you might be wondering, how do the Vokey Spin Milled Grooves comply with the new USGA Groove Rules and Regulations?
The new groove rules that take effect next year will change the way groove profile on the Spin Milled wedges. And Vokey just released a smaller grooved version of the Spin Milled Series called C-C (Condition and Competition) that conforms to the new regulations. The new Spin Milled C-C wedges produce a higher trajectory shot, with medium spin, and medium roll, compared to the medium trajectory, high spin, low roll of the Spin Milled wedges.

Vokey will continue to manufacturer the original Spin Milled wedges thru 2010, but beginning in 2011 all clubs will be manufactured to the new groove specifications. The vast majority of golfers, though, will be able to continue playing the “big groove” wedges until at least 2024.

The following is the currently proposed timeline for adopting the new groove regulations for various types of play:
2010 – Adopted as a Condition of Competition for elite professional events (professional tours, US Open (sectional qualifying and championship), Open Championship, etc.)
2014 – Adopted as a Condition of Competition for elite amateur championships (USGA and R&A amateur championships, state amateur championships, NCAA events, etc.)
2024 – Adopted as a Rule of Golf for all play (everyday golfers)

As you can see, everyday golfers like us have a lot of time before changing to the new grooves, unless we start competing.

Performance
I tested both the 52 08 and 56 11 Vokey Spin Milled wedges, and my wife tested the 54 10. Vokey Spin Milled wedges come in a variety of bounces and lofts, and you can select which wedge that works best with your swing type. If your a slider/sweeper of the ball with a shallow angle of attack with the leading edge of the club under the ball, Vokey recommends clubs with a narrower sole, less bounce and more camber. If you are more of driver/digger and use less hand action and steeper angle of attack, its recommended you use a wedge with a wider sole, more bounce, and less camber.

52 08
The setup of the 52 degree gap wedge was very pleasing to the eye with its non-glare satin finish. It doesn’t take a lot of force to get the ball up in the air thanks to its head weight.The performance of the gap/attack wedge was really good, providing ample feedback on shots hit in the sweetspot of the wedge. You know instantly if you hit the ball poorly by the feedback, which is firm. The ball will still go straight, but not as high and without the spin you desire. My approach shots within 100 yards would fly high in the air and stop on a dime. What I really liked is the amount of spin that you could impart on the ball. In tight lies situations around the green and light rough the 52 wedge performed well for chipping. A really good setup for an attack wedge.

56 11
The 56 degree sand wedge, has 11 degrees of bounce that made it very easy to hit the ball out of the sand and deep rough with out any effort. The grooves of the Spin Milled wedge really shined when using the 56, with providing a really high ball trajectory and lots of spin on the ball. Again the weight of the clubhead made it very easy to get the ball in the air and provided the right amount of feedback on my shots. Your short game will appreciate having this club in your bag.

54 10
My wife who never had a quality 54 degree wedge before, had to get used to the type of shots she could produce using the Vokey wedge. For her the backspin and control were the bright spots for her short game. The ability to get the ball up in the air and stop quickly were the types of shots she could not produce before. Vokey does not make a women’s specific wedges, so don’t expect ultralight shafts or women’s flex, which isn’t a big deal. My wife liked the weight and setup of her Vokey 54 and how it didn’t require a lot of effort to get the ball up in the air or through the rough.

Overall, we really liked the new lineup of Vokey Spin Milled wedges and the amount of options available. The amount of backspin and control, wedge setup based on your swing type make the Vokey Spin Willed wedges a good choice for those looking for wedges that suits their game.

Over the last few years I’ve noticed that there are more and more golf apparel options available to consumers. Gofler’s are beginning to understand that what you wear on the golf course is great way of expressing yourself to others.  And one company in particular is taking golf fashion to a new level with it’s fusion of style and performance in it’s line of golf apparel. That company is Toronto, Canada based Sligo Wear.

Sligo may not be a well known brand name, but its cutting edge designs, bright colors, and fitted cuts help define the golfer. One such golfer leading the charge is Brian Gay who has won several victories this season, which include the St. Jude Classic and Verizon Heritage Championship sporting apparel from Sligo Wear. I was lucky enough to try out a few of their more popular apparel items.

Sligo Mentor and O’Brien Golf Shirts

The Sligo Mentor Polo looks like your basic golf polo made from 100% moisture wicking material, but the hue of orange that is used has a really nice orange-red appearance that is quite pleasing to the eye. The first thing I noticed when wearing the Mentor polo was the slim athletic fit of the shirt, that ran true to size. The sleeves are nicely tapered and hang right above your biceps, so they don’t get in the way of your golf swing, and the left sleeve features the Sligo logo in cursive. I also liked the four button placard of the Mentor polo that gives the shirt a nice deep v-neck, than the traditional two button golf polo. The polyester moisture wicking fabric has a nice feel to it and nice non-shinny appearance, that did a great job of wicking moisture from my skin on hot days.

The O’Brien golf shirt in Ivory is a more interesting looking because it features an outlined argyle print over the left chest and back shoulder in a color combination of cleveland brown, vegas pink, and white with the sligo logo written in script in the print and in cursive on the left sleeve. The colors don’t necessarily read brown and pink, they are actually more close to a lighter shade of burgundy and dark olive green in my opinion. The cut and the fit of the O’Brien are similar to the Mentor polo with the sleeves being tapered and hitting right above the bicep, four button placard, and athletic fit. What I liked about the O’Brien is the argyle print that gave it a throwback look, with a modern twist. Performance wise the 100% moisture wicking polyester fabric did a good job of keeping me cool and dry.

Sligo Golf Shorts

Golf shorts by Sligo come in a color called Cleveland Brown, which like I mentioned in the O’Brien golf shirt doesn’t read brown at all, but more dark olive green. The cut of the Sligo shorts is not as fitted as I would expect, even for a pair of flat front shorts. I found the fit to be a bit on the baggy side and the crease on the front gave the shorts a pleated look to them, even though they were flat front. The length of the shorts came right above my knees and weren’t too long or too short and are a good length for golf shorts. The shorts are made from 65% Polyester, 32% Rayon, and 3% Lycra for a 2-way stretch. I liked the small details in the Sligo shorts which included the Sligo cursive logo on the back pocket and the contrast lime green piping on the interior band of the shorts. The shorts were not too heavy and moved with your body and the front pockets were nice a deep. Overall a nice pair of golf shorts, if you don’t mind the slightly baggy cut.

Durability wise both the golf shirts and golf shorts from Sligo held up very well after being washed and didn’t have any problems with shrinkage from washing or color fading.

The only drawback I could find with Sligo Wear is the price point for the O’Brien golf shirt at $75. I’m not sure that most consumers would pay that much for a golf shirt, in this economy, even if it’s stylish.

Overall, Sligo Wear is a great alternative to your typical golf shirt and perfect for the golfer looking for the perfect balance of style and performance in their golf clothing.

About the HMSMobile Swine Flu App
The HMSMobile Swine Flu app is part of a broader strategy by Harvard Medical School to leverage the convergence of smart phones and public health information in a series of iPhone apps, starting with the swine flu.

The Swine Flu app is very easy to use and broken up into three primary sections: Learn, Prevent, and Work.

The Learn section is made has four subsections: Video Guides (Pandemics, The H1N1 Virus, Vaccination, Treatment)-videos that explain the various topics in easy to understand language and visuals, News Feed which features updates news about the swine flu, Global Infection which is a swine flu “Health Map” that allows you get detailed swine flue outbreaks based on your location, and HMS Talk Back where you submit a question to HMS and you’ll either get a direct response back or video-cast.

Prevent has four sections as well: Video Guides (Droplet Infections, Protect Your Hands, Public Places, Hand Washing, Using a Mask, If You are Symptomatic); Do I have Swine Flu an interactive series of questions for either those over 3 years of age or over 3 years of age; Survival Kits lists of Electrical Supplies, Stay at Home, And Non Perishable Foods you should have in the event of a pandemic; Local Hotlines gives you a location based hotline phone number for you to call.

The Work section is developed in collaboration with Harvard Business School and is aimed at providing businesses with specific information on how to best prepare an enterprise for managing through the pandemic. This is an add-on and not included in the price of the app, but it would include Employee handbooks and printable signage, preparedness guides, global hotlines for H1N1, etc. This type of information is not dissimilar to what hospitals have for emergency and disaster preparedness, but at the business level.

Is It Worth $1.99?
The HMSMobile Swine Flu app is a very well executed that takes advantage of all the best features of the iPhone, like location awareness, video and phone integration. The first thing you’ll come to appreciate is how easy it is to navigate within the app. There is no guessing or surprises as to what type of content you’ll find in each section.

The videos in both the Learn and Prevent sections are educational and easy to understand, that you won’t get bored or be left saying to your self, “huh?” after watching them. The video on H1N1 Virus has some great graphics and one the best summaries on the virus in my opinion.

The other strong feature is the swine flu “Health Map” that allows you to use your iPhone’s GPS to track and get information about the swine flu in your area. The HMSMobile Swine Flu app displays a Google Map with the push pins indicating swine flu activity in your area. Click on the push pin and it will display the location and display a snippet of the news stories about the swine flu. The only problem when clicking on the link is that the app opens Safari to read the news story and leave the app. The one thing I would like to see added to this “Health Map” in a future release is to be able to lookup locations offering the vaccine to the public.

The symptom checker is nice little interactive way to determine if you are exhibiting symptoms that indicate H1N1 virus and if you should see the doctor. The questions are pretty basic and require a simple, “yes” or “no” and available for both adults 3 and over and children under 3 years old.

The HMS Talk Back feature of the Learn section of the app is well executed and not something I’d expect to see. The ability to seamlessly send an email to Harvard Medical School about a question or concern you have without leaving the app is a great! There is nothing worse than having to leave the app and to do a task like email and have to return back to the app. The best part is that you will get a response.

Overall, I think the HMSMobile Swine Flu app is an excellent first start in educating people about their health and making information more readily available. I think the $1.99 price tag makes the H1N1 Swine Flu app a bargain, considering the amount of information provided.

One of the reasons for having so many two and three putts is not having the putter face square at impact, especially for putts under 10 feet. How can you practice squaring the putter face at impact both indoor and outdoors and get immediate feedback? That’s what the new SKLZ Putting Gate attempts to solve with its portable putting training aid.

What is the SKLZ Putting Gate?
The SKLZ Putting Gate consists of several items: two wood blocks that are sloped that serve as your gate that have velcro on the bottom to attach to a rubber mat. The rubber mat has a white alignment stripe that you use to square with your putter’s corresponding alignment stripe and to square the Deuce 2-Ball Training Aid alignment guide.

The Deuce 2-Ball Training Aid resembles a small dumbbell with two golf balls that are attached to a plastic dowel that you use with the Putting Gate to get instant feedback.

How Does the SKLZ Putting Gate Work
The Putting Gate is quite simple to use, all you do is set the with of the gates to the desired width of your putter and adjust how wide or narrow you want the gate to be. Once the gate width is set, you place the 2-Ball Training Aid to lineup with the mats white alignment stripe. Sole your putter head behind the 2-Ball Training Aid making sure that the putter’s alignment guide is square with the 2-Ball and the putting mat.

In my tests, I was able to see instantly how well I hit my putts using the SKLZ Putting Gate and 2-Ball Training Aid. I have a tendency to hit the ball with the toe of my putter more often and the 2-Ball would push to the left. I knew exactly what I needed to work on. I also used the Putting Gate without the 2-Ball Training Aid and practiced making practice strokes through the gates without hitting the sides of the gate. To make it more challenging I would narrow the width of the gate. This helps with keeping the putter square. Now if you don’t want to use the 2-Ball Training Aid, you can substitute a golf ball instead, and take the Putting Gate to an outdoor practice green. Overall the SKLZ Putting Gate works well.

You might be thinking, couldn’t I just place two tees in the ground and make my own putting gate? Yes, you could, but you wouldn’t be able to do that indoors and you wouldn’t be able to use the alignment guide of the Putting Gate.

I think that a training aid like the SKLZ Putting Gate can definitely help any golfer become more aware of out what problem they may have with their putting stroke by using this training aid. Will it solve the reason why you constantly close the putter face or hit the ball more often with the heel of the putter? No, only PGA instructor can help you with finding the cause and correct your putting stroke.

I do think that SKLZ Putting Gate is a good training aid that can be used booth indoors and outdoors to help you groove your putting stroke.

When you think about golf shoes, the first brand that probably pops in your head is FootJoy. FootJoy which has been around for almost 150 years is steeped in tradition, comfort, and performance when it comes to their golf shoes. And when the FootJoy Icon golf shoe was released this year, I was curious to see if the FJ Icon lived up to its reputation of the storied footwear brand.

Look and Feel
The FootJoy Icon line of golf shoes all are made from premium full grain leather and calfskin which is considered to be the finest shoe leather in the world because it resists stretching. The smooth white and black leather uppers are very supple and offer outstanding waterproof comfort (2-Year Waterproof warranty), breathability, and durability. The luxurious calfskin detailing of the Icon with its black brogues cap toe, black croc embossed print, give the Icon a very classic and elegant look with a slightly square toe character.

Inside the shoe you’ll notice that the tongue and around the collar feature memory foam, which give the FootJoy Icon a custom fit and enhances your comfort when walking. Other nice details include a leather covered foot bed that has a dual density PU Fit-Bed, which creates an underfoot base that replicates the natural shape of your foot. This helps with providing you a custom fit and cushioned support.The lining of the shoes are also made from leather that make the shoes very comfortable to wear, slip resistant, and breathable.

One feature that is unique about the FootJoy Icon is the microfiber heel counter, which is a soft microfiber that is strategically placed in the heel to ensure an optimal slip resistant fit. A nice touch in my opinion. The ABS insole board is a pre-molded insole board that is extremely flexible in the forefoot for walking comfort and firm in the heel for support and platform stability.

Outsole
On the midsole of the FootJoy Icon you’ll notice it has a genuine leather bond welt. The leather bond welt provides beautiful visual detailing along the top edge of the midsole.The outsole is made up of a tri-density TPU (thermoplastic urethane) that are strategically placed throughout the outside for stability, flexibility, and walking comfort. The Dual OptiFlex Zones is a two-part forefoot flexibility channels, are also made of TPU to provide excellent walking comfort and flexibility.

On the sole of the FootJoy Icon you’ll notice a perforated alloy Torque Bar, which is used in the shank area of the outsole to increase your midfoot stability and provide support. I liked the perforated treatment of the Torque Bar to give it a more modern look than, if they left it solid. This also makes it look very lightweight.

Stinger cleats by CHAMP (white/black) provide superior traction and are greens friendly.

Performance
The first thing you’ll notice when you put on the FootJooy Icon is how comfortable they are. The FootJoy Icon has a standard fit across the forefoot and instep, with a slightly narrow heel thanks to its FJ Icon Laser Last which is a composite of thousands of digital scans of the FootJoy Laser Fitting System. Rest assured your feet will be very comfortable wearing these golf shoes all day long. I’ll admit I was a skeptical that the FootJoy Icon would be a comfortable pair of golf shoes, that are booth breathable and durable. The use of calfskin and full grain leather cannot be appreciated until you slip on a pair of Icon’s. My feet were always cool and dry, and never felt sore after wearing the FJ Icon for an entire round.

What I also really liked was the memory foam padding along the tongue and collar, which gave the shoes a more custom fit, but also made them more comfortable to walk in. The one thing I cannot stand when wearing golf shoes for a long period of time is when the top of your foot starts to get sore from being pinched by the tongue of the shoe. I never experienced that problem while wearing the FJ Icon golf shoe.

On the course the Stinger cleats by CHAMP offer the right amount of traction throughout the golf swing and stability when walking. Part of the stability is provided by the Torque Bar located in the shank area of the outsole, which supports your midfoot. A cool little feature of the Stinger cleats is the spring-flex traction of cleats that make them very green friendly. In other words, your not going to rip up the greens and leave cleat marks all over the greens.

The only problem I could find with the FootJoy Icon, is the price at $250. The $250 price point, might be out of reach of some golfers during this down economy, but if you can afford them they are a worth every penny.

Overall, I was really impressed by the quality of materials and performance features of the FootJoy Icon. For the money your getting a great quality pair of golf shoes that live up to its reputation of making golf shoes that are comfortable and perform. With PGA Tour players like Hunter Mahan who wear the FJ Icon, you really can’t go wrong with a pair. There’s a reason why they are the most popular golf shoe in golf and have been around so long.

The Nike Concierge will forward your individual specifications, including lie angle and putter length to The OVEN, Nike Golf’s R&D facility in Fort Worth, Texas.  The Nike OVEN is the location where the clubs are made for all of the Nike Golf athletes on Tour.  Each custom putter will be carefully built by the same people who build clubs for the number one player in the world, Tiger Woods, as well as Paul Casey, Stewart Cink, Lucas Glover, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard and Simon Dyson – all Nike athletes and all ranked within the top 50 in the world.

Here’s what you will get with the special limited edition METHOD putter:

• Each putter will be carved with two initials or numerals provided by the consumer.
• Each putter will be made to the desired specifications of the consumer, including lie angle and putter length.
• You will get special one-on-one attention from Nike’s Concierge including regular communication with a status report on development of their putter.
• The custom-made, one-of-a-kind METHOD putter will be shipped in a special box within three-weeks.
