I just returned from a quick trip to our Orlando office on Universal Studios Back lot. We have 4 offices there. I could tell you about how in 72 hours we moved lead HD Editor Giovanni Sensat from AVID to Final Cut Pro HD and rebuilt his entire suite with all new software, hardware, furniture and monitors. I could also tell you how we re-worked editor Christina Klimis’ suite with new furniture making clients more comfortable and our post production seamless by connecting the two edit suites together. I could also tell you about how we cleaned out DP Dan Beckmann and cameraman Dan Lowrey’s equipment room or how Dan Lowrey and I visited 4 clients and vendors in Miami in a day an made it back for a late dinner with producer Susan Stauffer from Verocity. The last thing I could tell you about is my meetings with clients in Orlando. But I’m a TV guy who doesn’t bury the lead and likes cool pictures.
So instead I’ll tell you about how a great client like Universal Studios Orlando put together The Wizarding World of Harry Potter or WWOHP as we refer to it. One of the perks of having offices on property is I get an ID badge. One of the perks of having Universal as a client is the personal tour we got of the WWOHP attraction from my business partner and friend, Dan Beckmann.

Dan shot it all. He knows the stories because he covered them. In twenty minutes we walked in the employee side entrance to the attraction, down the street, purchased some Potter merchandise for the kids and heard all about it. The fun for us is figuring out how the park uses technology to entertain the patrons and the business of the attraction. Another perk is getting 35% off in the gift shop, which I tell you after ringing up one box of Jelly Beans, a chocolate Frog and a 6 pack of Pumpkin Juice comes in handy. By the way, if you visit and make a purchase they’ll give you as many printed bags as you’d like for free and no you can’t buy bottled Butter Beer.

On Sunday, August 1, 2010, NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Elliott Sadler crashed into the inside retaining wall at the Pocono Raceway during the Pennsylvania 500. Soon after, NASCAR officials reported it was the hardest collision recorded in the sport’s history…and it sure looked like it. The entire engine flew on the track and the front end of the car was destroyed. Amazingly, Sadler got out of the car, laid on the track for a minute and then walked away.

A few days later, ESPN called Go To Team’s Charlotte based HD video crew. Nick Modisett and Roger Woodruff, headed to Sadler’s beach house in Eastern North Carolina to do a live shot for SportsCenter. Sadler was taking a much-needed vacation after the scariest wreck in recent memory.

The crew figured Sadler would be pretty sore and maybe even a little immobile after being blasted into a wall traveling over 80 G’s but that was not the case at all. He was walking around, carrying his newborn baby and even cutting up with us. He said he was a little sore in the shoulders but over all he felt pretty good. It goes to show that massive safety improvements NASCAR has made in the past few years are really working. Elliott Sadler was a very nice guy and we here at Go To Team had a great time with him and wish him the best in the future.

POV!? What is POV? If you don’t know about the POV cameras then your missing out! A “POV” (point of view) camera is extremely small and can give you the ability to get a shot nearly anywhere. A car going 180 MPH? No problem! The camera records to SD cards which gives it the ability to record for hours while only being about the size of a dime. Orlando based crew Dan Lowrey raced over to New Smyrna Speedway in Florida to put this camera to the test with Dream Factory. Accompanied by his trusty sidekick, the Panasonic HVX200, and the POV camera, Lowrey covered every possible angle. Dan was able to mount the POV camera in several different places around the car making sure every shot would add some more flavor. The fast action and loud rumbling made for some very cool TV. Charlotte Crew Interviews Harry Connick Jr. for Larry King Live

In late June, Larry King Live presented a two-hour telethon to help the victims of the Gulf Coast oil spill. Of course one of the guests was good ol’ Gulf Coast native Harry Connick Jr. . Since the telethon was right in the middle of Harry’s busy tour schedule, he had to tape his message to Larry and all the viewers prior to the live air date.

Nick Modisett, GTT’s Charlotte based HD cameraman, sat down with Harry and to capture his words of encouragement to the thousands of people devastated by the oil spill disaster.

Harry was performing at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte where Modisett filmed the spot. Harry only took one take and he was on to the next interview. It was obvious that he would do whatever if it meant it would help the Gulf Coast.

Orlando Editor Meets Up with Hulk Hogan for Round 2

Before becoming employed by GTT our Orlando Editor, Christina Klimis, had worked in Reality Television. Her first show as an intern was Hogan Knows Best 4. This was her first taste of working on a show for a major cable channel. As she gained experience she was promoted to Assistant Editor. The position consisted of digitizing, rough editing, multi-syncing multi-cam shoots, organizing footage for editors and outputs for the network.

It was one busy year for her production life. Needless to say there was a steady overflow of footage, as she worked on 4 shows simultaneously. One of which was Brooke Knows Best Season 2. This show was a spin off after Hogan Knows Best came to an end on VH1. Hulk Hogan was a main talent in the show considering it was all about his daughter Brooke growing up and moving to Miami.

As Christina transitioned to her new position on the backlot at Universal Studios, she was surprised to see a familiar face. Yes, brother, it was Hulk Hogan. TNA wrestling films twice a month on the backlot for Spike TV. The wrestlers line the hallways in hot neon spandex, knee high boots and decorative face makeup. It becomes some what of an obstacle course to get down the hall! They are all 6 foot plus and well over 200 lbs! The backlot hosts a variety of productions, but when the wrestlers are there, things are a bit more entertaining!

Tom Wells and Big Boi

Two things I’ve been shooting a lot of since moving to Atlanta is sports and music. A few months ago I started the day by shooting on set with T.I. and finished the day shooting at the home of Jamal Crawford of the Atlanta Hawks – on two completely unrelated shoots. Recently I had the fortune to work with another awesome duo for for MLB Productions – Big Boi from Outkast and Jason Heyward, star newcomer to the Atlanta Braves.

The day started with Big giving Jason a tour of his studio and a preview of his upcoming album, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, followed by Jason returning the favor and giving Big a tour of the Braves clubhouse. Later that night – after a long rain delay – Big Boi lead the crowd in the 7th inning stretch. It turned into one very, very long day with the ball game not ending until after 1am, In the end we shot A LOT of tape, stuck out a rainstorm and ended up meeting some cool new people. Shoots like this are the reason I love calling Atlanta home.

Charlotte Apprentice Teams up with NASCAR

If someone asked me to describe the last six months of my life in one word, it would be NASCAR. While some people might find this assignment a radical adjustment from their daily life, I was in my element. NASCAR has always been a part of my life. In fact, Skip says I’m the first apprentice to work for Go To Team who is a NASCAR fan. Being able to work in the infield and travel from race to race, I experienced the awesome wonder of working in an environment I always dreamed of being in. This makes me one lucky dog!

The season starts out in February with a few intense days known as the Hanger Shoot. Fox Sports literally rents out an entire airplane hanger in Daytona. Then about five rooms are constructed for the various shoots that will be going on there. Throughout the day every NASCAR driver makes his way through the hanger. During this shoot, Fox produces all the footage the network uses for bumps, promos, and b-roll. The amount of people and the energy required for this shoot is truly incredible. I may have been the new kid on the block, but I jumped in and, among other tasks, helped construct the truss.

The hanger shoot kicked off my year of incredible moments. For example, if you think the hanger shoot sounds like a great time, the track is even better. There my dreams came true—I worked with the likes of NASCAR legends D.W. and Jeff Hammond! As a dedicated NASCAR fan, I watched these guys on television for nearly a decade. Now, I was mic’n them up and working with them on a weekly basis. How surreal! Actually, almost everything about the last few months have been a bit surreal. Traveling to all the tracks, being in victory lane, and mic’n up drivers still seems strange. There are definitely times when I have to pinch myself!

The shoot later that day was with Kyle Petty and Rutledge Wood. They attempted to fish in the bay and of course the outcome was a comical one. It was a great shoot, not just because classic landmarks like Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge surrounded us; but because I thrived on the challenge of getting good audio—wind and water certainly threaten anyone’s ability to achieve superior sound quality during a shoot.

Orlando DP/Partner, Dan Beckmann has been covering the MAAC’s collegiate championship events for over 10 years. From volleyball and soccer, to cross country and golf, Beckmann has been shooting, editing, writing, and producing all the MAAC’s spring and fall championships!

But with Go To Team’s multiple crews, MAAC coverage has now become a true team effort. Helping out Beckmann was Cameraman John Demaio and Trey Jenkins – both got into the action by shooting the second and third round of this year’s Golf Championship in central Florida.GTT’s newest editor, Christina Klimis, took over all the post responsibilities, while Go To Team’s associate producer, Amanda Knight, helped write the script.

For the second year in a row, the MAAC Golf Championship took place at Celebration Golf Course in Celebration, Florida. The crews (one-man-banding on the Sony V1U) captured all the weekend’s action! Stay tuned for the video – arriving soon on a web site near you!!!!!

Roger behind the camera for a series of interviews

As Nick and I made the trip out to Valdese, North Carolina, my mind raced with excitement for numerous reasons. For starters, I’d been on NASCAR for 6 months. And, I had friend and fellow GTT crew, Nick Modisett as Audio. Plus, working with talented producers Joey Popp and his wife, Catherine added to my delight–they are always a pleasure to work with. Our goal: To help get the word out about the quality furniture being produced in North Carolina’s backyard.

We jam-packed the day with interviews. We shot nine total, including company presidents. Then I ventured onto the factory floor to capture the craftsmanship in action. Nick and I explored the beautiful countryside of North Carolina and took advantage of the surroundings to film some scenic shots.

We used the Catawba River as a backdrop and two HMI’s to light our subjects… the interviews looked as fantastic as they sounded. Quality work combined with a beautiful environment creates and inspires masterful work!

I could not have asked for a better day working with Joey and Catherine Popp, and Nick. When we finished for the day, all I could was think about how much I can’t wait to do it again. Bring on the corporate video shoots.

Go To Team’s Skip Clark spent much of the 2009 college football season in Knoxville, Tennessee, with the UT Volunteers. A pretty easy gig for a guy who loves football! The University Of Tennessee brought Skip on to gather footage throughout their season that would be used for marketing and PR campaigns as well as the new jumbotron at Neyland Stadium. Clark and the entire team of crews – as many as four crews per game – started before sunrise on Saturdays and would work through the entire day, often long after the last tailgater left. They spent time with the concession guys pouring ice into the coolers in the stadium, followed the students as they raised the flags around the stadium at sunrise, hung out with the tailgaters before the game, and marched with the band during the Vol Walk and in the “Power T!” Oh – and after all that, they still shot all the best plays from the sidelines and then wrapped the games in the locker room with the team. And every week it was something different! With the creative crew at the University of Tennessee there weren’t any rules. Skip and the entire crew of DPs and shooters could try out just about anything. Skip used everything from his Panasonic Varicam to the Go To Team F-900. Even his old Nikon Super 8 camera got used throughout the season!

Oh – and did we mention the day they covered the “Vol Navy?” Every week dozens of boats – filled with a different kind of tailgater – arrive at the stadium via the Tennessee River. Of course, the crew just had to find the best boat of “sail-gaters” to follow down the river! College football recruits love college girls! The 2010 college football can’t get here soon enough!

Go To Team’s Jimmy Hall hit the road for Johnson City, Tennessee to shoot for MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow show’s Geek Week special. The crew met with the one and only Big Bad Doo Doo Daddy, or as his colleagues like to call him Dr. Jim Mead. Dr. Mead is the chair of East Tennessee State University’s Department of Geoscience and paleontologist extraordinaire, he is also the proud curator of the largest collection of prehistoric dung in the world. But no one collects dung because it smells nice. Mr. Mead can provide samples to scientists who extract DNA to learn about fauna of the past. Mr. Mead estimates that he has about 100 ice-age turds (his word) with potentially extractable DNA, including one that might be as much as 30,000 years old. East Tennessee State’s Don Sundquist Center of Excellence in Paleontology serves as the research umbrella for the nearby Gray Fossil Site, a Miocene sinkhole that state-highway contractors unearthed 10 years ago. The site houses a museum and laboratory where you can actually watch the dig outside and the extraction of the fossil in the lab. GTT shot the piece using the HDX 900. Go To Team Gets The Checkered Flag For The 2010 NASCAR Season

As TNT passes the NASCAR torch to ESPN, Go To Team Director of Photography, Skip Clark, reaches his finish line and sees the checkered flag signal the end of his 2010 NASCAR season. To say this season was yet another success is an understatement. This year brought exciting changes and unexpected additions to the usual “NASCAR grind.”

As usual, every year starts off with the “Hanger Shoot” in Daytona. Go To Team and FOX rent out an entire airplane hanger. Six rooms are constructed inside the hanger. Each room is assigned to shoot a specific element that will inevitably be used throughout the FOX NASCAR season. This year Skip’s room consisted of a simple truss design with five spark machines hanging from it. Drivers would stand a few feet in front of the structure and when action was called sparks would fall behind them. The room was shot in slow motion causing the sparks to drop like snowflakes. Very cool stuff.

2010 saw Atlanta Director of Photography, Tom Wells, return this season for a handful of races for FOX. At the hanger shoot Tom DP’d the Punch Cam room. The room was literally a boxing ring. Drivers would throw on a pair of boxing gloves and a robe and take punches a specially designed camera rig. On top of that Tom also ran second camera for Skip, shot some pieces solo, and knocked out some billboards too.

Of course, like every year a new apprentice is brought in to the equation to run audio. This year’s apprentice, Roger Woodruff, is actually a big NASCAR fan. This made the season a bit more interesting. Luckily he was able to control himself as he mic’ed up drivers like Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick.

Another exciting addition was the use of the Cannon 7D. This HDSLR camera has the ability to shoot in 24p and you can over crank it to 60fps as well. The results, with the right glass, are breath taking slow motion shots with a shallow depth of field. Just think NFL films without the hassle of actually shooting on film. FOX was very excited with the addition and it definitely became the hit of the season.

With Skip using the 7D in Victory Lane, that opened the door for Roger to get some valuable hands on experience with the Varicam. By the end of the FOX season Skip’s apprentice was not only shooting “crazy cam” in Victory Lane but during the race as well. For Roger it was a dream come true to be shooting NASCAR’s race winners.

Quicker than you could say “Pit Stop,” FOX passed the torch to TNT. TNT’s season is quite shorter than FOX’s but just as action packed. The biggest highlight of the TNT season has to be Tom Wells stepping in for Skip on a few of the races. Tom fit right in and got to work. TNT hardly noticed that Skip wasn’t there. Sorry Skip!

Both Skip and Tom shot episodes of the Ponytail Express with Kyle Petty. These comical episodes saw Kyle Petty do everything from explore our nation’s capitol to skydiving in Florida. Aside from the Ponytail Express there were also interviews and garage b-roll to be shot.

It’s still hard to believe that the NASCAR season is over for Skip and GTT. This season moved very quickly. Fortunately the 2011 season is only six months away.

Go To Team’s Los Angeles Director of Photography, Skip Clark, once again wrapped up another explosive season with TNT’s Summer Season of NASCAR. TNT’s season is short but sweet. In just six weeks, GTT hits many unique tracks including Pocono’s triangular track, Sonoma’s road course, and Daytona’s night race.

For GTT, the biggest news of the season came when fellow Atlanta Director of Photography Tom Wells stepped in for Skip at the Pocono and Daytona races. Tom felt right at home, having worked with FOX during their half of the NASCAR season. Pocono was a busy weekend to say the least. Tom shot everything from driver interviews to garage B-Roll to the celebration in victory lane with winner, Denny Hamlin. Tom even found time to grab an epic shot of Richard “The King” Petty.

Speaking of Petty, Skip and Tom both shot a few episodes of Kyle Petty’s Ponytail Express. Skip found himself at the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland where Kyle got a tour of the museum. That was followed by fishing in San Francisco Bay where Kyle was joined by bud, Rutledge Wood. Tom captured Kyle Petty doing a little skydiving in Daytona and exploring our nation’s capitol.

Another highlight of the season was the “ride along.” Jeff Burton took Lindsay Czarniak of TNT for a ride around the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, giving her inside tips about getting around the track. Skip capitalized on this moment. He strapped a few POV cameras to the car, including an “Ice Cube” camera on the dashboard. During this moment, apprentice Roger Woodruff had the ride of his life. Roger hid in the vehicle’s backseat and attempted to monitor audio while riding at speeds reaching 100mph.

When TNT’s Summer Season came to an end, it also marked the end of the NASCAR season for Skip (back to Los Angeles), his apprentice, and Go To Team. Don’t worry Skip, there’s always next year! Let the countdown begin!

Attorney General Eric Holder surveyed areas affected by the oil spill in Dauphin Island, Alabama. The Attorney General also met with local community members that were impacted by the disaster. Orlando based crew Dan Lowrey made the long drive to the island to cover the event for FOX News. Equipped with the Panasonic HDX900, Lowrey shot the event, then high tailed it out off the island taking a ferry to the satellite truck. For the last two months, Lowrey has been on the road shooting for FOX and NBC news covering the oil spill from New Orleans, Louisiana to Pensacola, Florida.

Although I have no personal experience to base this on, I always hear how different my apprenticeship has been compared to others. When I moved to Charlotte to work with Skip, I was supposed to be running audio for him and only him. That changed rather quickly when Skip moved to LA. This move left me to run audio with other camera guys in the Go To Team family. The dynamic of my apprenticeship changed quickly, but it changed for the better.

Instead of only working with Skip and Fox Sports, I got to work with a variety of different clients and shooters. In doing so, I saw the big picture—I understood what Go To Team does on a large scale. I worked on live shoots, corporate videos, and even ran audio for a few Dateline interviews. The outstanding talent of every Go To Team cameraman is a given, yet each cameraman has a unique approach and distinct workstyle.

Prior to the NASCAR season, I spent most of my time running with Dave Baker. In a lot of ways I was unofficially Dave’s apprentice. I asked a lot of questions at first and Dave answered all of them. One of the coolest shoots I ran audio for was working with Tom Wells. We met up in Charleston, SC to spend the day with Jenny Sandford for a Barbara Walters’ special. We shot b-roll of her morning routine and headed to Columbia where she gave us an incredible tour of the Governor’s Mansion. The only thing that would have put the icing on an already delicious day is if Barbara Walters had actually been there.

Every shoot, no matter who it is with, whether it is Skip, Dave, Tom, Jimmy, or Nick, really helped me become comfortable and familiar with Go To Team’s work culture. While it wasn’t originally in the plans, working with multiple cameramen from Go To Team enhanced my apprenticeship experience, provided me with greater variety, offered depth, and prepared me for my future with the company better than anything else could.
