Go To Team’s Jimmy Hall hit the road for Johnson City, Tennessee to shoot for MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow show’s Geek Week special. The crew met with the one and only Big Bad Doo Doo Daddy, or as his colleagues like to call him Dr. Jim Mead. Dr. Mead is the chair of East Tennessee State University’s Department of Geoscience and paleontologist extraordinaire, he is also the proud curator of the largest collection of prehistoric dung in the world. But no one collects dung because it smells nice. Mr. Mead can provide samples to scientists who extract DNA to learn about fauna of the past. Mr. Mead estimates that he has about 100 ice-age turds (his word) with potentially extractable DNA, including one that might be as much as 30,000 years old. East Tennessee State’s Don Sundquist Center of Excellence in Paleontology serves as the research umbrella for the nearby Gray Fossil Site, a Miocene sinkhole that state-highway contractors unearthed 10 years ago. The site houses a museum and laboratory where you can actually watch the dig outside and the extraction of the fossil in the lab. GTT shot the piece using the HDX 900. As TNT passes the NASCAR torch to ESPN, Go To Team Director of Photography, Skip Clark, reaches his finish line and sees the checkered flag signal the end of his 2010 NASCAR season. To say this season was yet another success is an understatement. This year brought exciting changes and unexpected additions to the usual “NASCAR grind.”

As usual, every year starts off with the “Hanger Shoot” in Daytona. Go To Team and FOX rent out an entire airplane hanger. Six rooms are constructed inside the hanger. Each room is assigned to shoot a specific element that will inevitably be used throughout the FOX NASCAR season. This year Skip’s room consisted of a simple truss design with five spark machines hanging from it. Drivers would stand a few feet in front of the structure and when action was called sparks would fall behind them. The room was shot in slow motion causing the sparks to drop like snowflakes. Very cool stuff.

2010 saw Atlanta Director of Photography, Tom Wells, return this season for a handful of races for FOX. At the hanger shoot Tom DP’d the Punch Cam room. The room was literally a boxing ring. Drivers would throw on a pair of boxing gloves and a robe and take punches a specially designed camera rig. On top of that Tom also ran second camera for Skip, shot some pieces solo, and knocked out some billboards too.

Of course, like every year a new apprentice is brought in to the equation to run audio. This year’s apprentice, Roger Woodruff, is actually a big NASCAR fan. This made the season a bit more interesting. Luckily he was able to control himself as he mic’ed up drivers like Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick.

Another exciting addition was the use of the Cannon 7D. This HDSLR camera has the ability to shoot in 24p and you can over crank it to 60fps as well. The results, with the right glass, are breath taking slow motion shots with a shallow depth of field. Just think NFL films without the hassle of actually shooting on film. FOX was very excited with the addition and it definitely became the hit of the season.

With Skip using the 7D in Victory Lane, that opened the door for Roger to get some valuable hands on experience with the Varicam. By the end of the FOX season Skip’s apprentice was not only shooting “crazy cam” in Victory Lane but during the race as well. For Roger it was a dream come true to be shooting NASCAR’s race winners.

Quicker than you could say “Pit Stop,” FOX passed the torch to TNT. TNT’s season is quite shorter than FOX’s but just as action packed. The biggest highlight of the TNT season has to be Tom Wells stepping in for Skip on a few of the races. Tom fit right in and got to work. TNT hardly noticed that Skip wasn’t there. Sorry Skip!

Both Skip and Tom shot episodes of the Ponytail Express with Kyle Petty. These comical episodes saw Kyle Petty do everything from explore our nation’s capitol to skydiving in Florida. Aside from the Ponytail Express there were also interviews and garage b-roll to be shot.

It’s still hard to believe that the NASCAR season is over for Skip and GTT. This season moved very quickly. Fortunately the 2011 season is only six months away.

Go To Team’s Los Angeles Director of Photography, Skip Clark, once again wrapped up another explosive season with TNT’s Summer Season of NASCAR. TNT’s season is short but sweet. In just six weeks, GTT hits many unique tracks including Pocono’s triangular track, Sonoma’s road course, and Daytona’s night race.

For GTT, the biggest news of the season came when fellow Atlanta Director of Photography Tom Wells stepped in for Skip at the Pocono and Daytona races. Tom felt right at home, having worked with FOX during their half of the NASCAR season. Pocono was a busy weekend to say the least. Tom shot everything from driver interviews to garage B-Roll to the celebration in victory lane with winner, Denny Hamlin. Tom even found time to grab an epic shot of Richard “The King” Petty.

Speaking of Petty, Skip and Tom both shot a few episodes of Kyle Petty’s Ponytail Express. Skip found himself at the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland where Kyle got a tour of the museum. That was followed by fishing in San Francisco Bay where Kyle was joined by bud, Rutledge Wood. Tom captured Kyle Petty doing a little skydiving in Daytona and exploring our nation’s capitol.

Another highlight of the season was the “ride along.” Jeff Burton took Lindsay Czarniak of TNT for a ride around the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, giving her inside tips about getting around the track. Skip capitalized on this moment. He strapped a few POV cameras to the car, including an “Ice Cube” camera on the dashboard. During this moment, apprentice Roger Woodruff had the ride of his life. Roger hid in the vehicle’s backseat and attempted to monitor audio while riding at speeds reaching 100mph.

When TNT’s Summer Season came to an end, it also marked the end of the NASCAR season for Skip (back to Los Angeles), his apprentice, and Go To Team. Don’t worry Skip, there’s always next year! Let the countdown begin!

Skip went behind the scenes for the FoxSports.com show ‘MMAthletics’ where the crew followed the show’s talent, Rachelle Leah, through a photo shoot. Needless to say, Leah isn’t a MMA Model for no reason. Watch the sexy video and let us know if you want to go behind the scenes next time.

Attorney General Eric Holder surveyed areas affected by the oil spill in Dauphin Island, Alabama. The Attorney General also met with local community members that were impacted by the disaster. Orlando based crew Dan Lowrey made the long drive to the island to cover the event for FOX News. Equipped with the Panasonic HDX900, Lowrey shot the event, then high tailed it out off the island taking a ferry to the satellite truck. For the last two months, Lowrey has been on the road shooting for FOX and NBC news covering the oil spill from New Orleans, Louisiana to Pensacola, Florida.

Although I have no personal experience to base this on, I always hear how different my apprenticeship has been compared to others. When I moved to Charlotte to work with Skip, I was supposed to be running audio for him and only him. That changed rather quickly when Skip moved to LA. This move left me to run audio with other camera guys in the Go To Team family. The dynamic of my apprenticeship changed quickly, but it changed for the better.

Instead of only working with Skip and Fox Sports, I got to work with a variety of different clients and shooters. In doing so, I saw the big picture—I understood what Go To Team does on a large scale. I worked on live shoots, corporate videos, and even ran audio for a few Dateline interviews. The outstanding talent of every Go To Team cameraman is a given, yet each cameraman has a unique approach and distinct workstyle.

Prior to the NASCAR season, I spent most of my time running with Dave Baker. In a lot of ways I was unofficially Dave’s apprentice. I asked a lot of questions at first and Dave answered all of them. One of the coolest shoots I ran audio for was working with Tom Wells. We met up in Charleston, SC to spend the day with Jenny Sandford for a Barbara Walters’ special. We shot b-roll of her morning routine and headed to Columbia where she gave us an incredible tour of the Governor’s Mansion. The only thing that would have put the icing on an already delicious day is if Barbara Walters had actually been there.

Every shoot, no matter who it is with, whether it is Skip, Dave, Tom, Jimmy, or Nick, really helped me become comfortable and familiar with Go To Team’s work culture. While it wasn’t originally in the plans, working with multiple cameramen from Go To Team enhanced my apprenticeship experience, provided me with greater variety, offered depth, and prepared me for my future with the company better than anything else could.

More than 40,000 people showed up to watch one of NASA’s final space shuttle launches at the Kennedy Space center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Go To Team’s Orlando based, Dan Lowrey was there to document the launch. Atlantis took off at 2:20 pm at over three thousand miles per hour at takeoff. Lowrey was covering the event with Kristen Dahlgren of NBC News Channel. Since most of there live shots took place before the launch, Dan was able to have a little fun with his POV camera on Atlantis’s take off. Check out the video below to see what the ContourHD can do!

Charleston Crew Returns to Gulf for Fox News

Go To Team’s Charleston based Dave Baker and audio operator Carl Mullins recently made another trip to cover the BP Oil spill in the Gulf states.

This time the destination was sunny Florida and the client was Fox News. Baker shot the two week tour with Fox News correspondents Jonathan Serrie and Elizabeth Prann. The tour spanned from Panama City Beach, then to Destin and finally Pensacola Beach.

Coverage and live broadcast were provided utilizing GTT’s Panasonic HDX900 High Definition camera along with the P2 Capable Panasonic HVX200. Fortunately, the majority of the weeks spent on the beach were sunny, though the occasional inclement weather (it was Florida after all) couldn’t keep the crew down thanks to Go To Teams Bron Kobold waterproof HMI’s. The Baker Crew is Back in Charleston, cleaned up, and ready for the next cool shoot.

Go To Team’s Atlanta Crew Comes Full Circle with America’s Most Wanted and Forensic Files

It’s always fun when we get called out on assignment for a breaking story. Living in the moment, trying to figure out what is going to happen next and how to tell the story in the process is a challenge and I don’t know too many camera crews that don’t get a kick out of it. Usually in those situations we do our job, help tell the story and go home. Every once in a while though the story makes such an impact that its effects linger on and revisiting it again in the future is inevitable. That’s what happened recently with the murder case of Tamika Huston out of Spartanburg, SC.

Back in 2004 Tamika went missing from Spartanburg without any real clues as to where she might be – foul play was suspected but there wasn’t any clear evidence at the time. America’s Most Wanted picked up the case and I got hired on to shoot the story. Before it was all over we spent about 20 days over the course of a few months working with law enforcement detectives to help put out the word of her disappearance in an attempt to develop leads. We chased down suspects for interviews, talked to family members and neighbors, and even searched through fields with law enforcement looking for clues. In the end a tip generated from a viewer watching America’s Most Wanted led to the arrest and conviction of Tamika’s killer – a sad ending but without doubt a very rewarding experience.

Then just a couple of months ago we got a call from Forensic Files, another awesome Go To Team client, saying they were revisiting the case and wanted to make a show out of it. Needless to say, I was pretty stoked. So back to Spartanburg we went, telling the story in a whole new way – looking back on it with all the facts and breaking it down step by step. Since the case began, though, the world has moved to High Definition, so instead of shooting BetaSP like we did the first time we were shooting HDCAM on our Sony CineAlta F900 – upgrade!

In the process I got to have a really cool reunion with the detectives who brought the killer to justice, learned some new things about the case, and even befriended a previous suspect we had chased down for an interview years earlier! One day I’m wondering if the person we’re interviewing is a murderer, and a few years later I’m hanging out in a comedy club with him! Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction. TV One has been doing interviews shot on the Panasonic HDX900 with past collaborators, friends and family of George ‘the Architect of Freak Funk’ Clinton for the documentary series ‘Unsung’. Raliegh Crew was there to capture the memories with the some of the biggest names in funk and soul music. When Jimmy saw Maceo Parker’s name on the call sheet, Jimmy about lost his top and flipped his whigg. Maceo Parker THE funk and soul saxophonist, who played with James Brown (Maceo! Come blow your horn!) in the 60′s as well as Parliament -Funkadelic during the 70′s was in Raleigh NC.

Maceo talked about the differences between working with James Brown and George Clinton, collaborating and arranging music with Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins, and the show when they first landed the mothership. We also interviewed Grady Thomas (the Purple Wizard) and Tommy Lee Clinton. Grady is one of the founding members of Parliament who took us back to how it all began, he also talked about the transformation from doo wop to funk and the drama that lead to the breakup of the group. Tommy Lee Clinton is George’s brother, he talked mostly about their family and childhood.

If your a music lover than this is a must-see. The doc will air sometime in the fall on TV One as part of their ‘Unsung’ series.

Go To Team offers a unique opportunity to Chief Photographers and local TV Cameramen. This position is designed for photographers that want to gain enough experience to shoot, run audio, and light at the highest level. We have successfully run this federally accredited apprenticeship for eight years and six of our former apprentices are now full-time Directors of Photography for Go To Team.

Roger Woodruff is the apprentice to Charlotte Director of Photography, Skip Clark. When Roger first found he was chosen to be Skip’s apprentice he nearly exploded with excitement. This was one step forward to becoming a skilled cameraman.

Roger has worked with Skip for past nine months. He says it has been an amazing learning experience. Aside from being introduced to the world of ENG audio, he assisted Skip with lighting and camera support.

Roger and Skip have spent the majority of their shoots on the NASCAR circuit working for Fox Sports and now TNT. Roger expected to learn about new equipment and techniques, but Skip has taught him other helpful tips like the media discounts that airlines offer, learning how to pack efficiently, and how it is to live your life on the road.

Roger says, “The apprenticeship is about embracing the experience and the learning opportunities it presents. Everyday I grow and get more familiar with the culture and attitude of Go To Team. The more assignments I complete, the more confident I feel about taking the next step. This is all due in large part to Skip. His guidance as a supervisor and mentor builds, and continues to build, the foundation for my future professional success. Thanks, Skip!”

Who doesn’t want to make cool TV?

When Christina Klimis, our newest editor in Orlando, saw the posting online for Go To Team she instantly applied.

She started out working for her middle school, and then high school morning shows, becoming heavily involved in all aspects of production during her high school years. Christina created videos for the Pinellas County School System, entering film contests and documenting community activities. After high school, she had her mind set on moving to a bigger city to pursue her career in television production. Graduating from University of Central Florida in May 2008 with a Bachelors degree in Digital Media, she was hired as a production assistant at Pink Sneakers Productions.

For the next year and a half, she worked her way up from assistant editor to segment producer. She story-produced two episodes of TLC’s Documentary series “Truth Be Told.” She also worked on “Hogan Knows Best” (VH1), “My Big Redneck Wedding” (CMT), “Miami Social” (Bravo), “Live for the Moment” (CBS), and various other reality television shows.

As the newest addition to our Orlando crew (on the Universal Studios Orlando backlot), Christina edits on Final Cut Pro, assists with pre and post production needs, and recharges on roller coasters during her lunch break.

Orlando DP/Partner Dan Beckmann, and GTT Cameraman Dan Lowrey, spent the day meeting and greeting all the characters at Universal Studios Florida!

Shooting in High Definition on the Panasonic HDX900, Beckmann put the finishing touches on the HD EPK (Electronic Press Kit) for the PR team at Universal Studios Resort.

Kids from all over the country got to shake hands, pose for pictures, and grab some autographs with all their favorite animated heros.

Beckmann and Lowrey (mixing a little pleasure with business) even got into the action, by meeting and greeting Scooby Doo, Woody Woodpecker, and Curious George!

Raleigh Crew teams up with NBA.com for the draft

Days after Raleigh native John Wall reached an endorsement agreement with Reebok worth $25 million, the NBA’s #1 draft pick returned home to Raleigh North Carolina for his sister’s graduation party.

No rest for the the wicked, Wall continued his two a day training sessions, while Raleigh cameraman Jimmy Hall with Turner Sports and NBA.com spent the day shadowing him. Hall shot the piece with the Panasonic HDX 900.

Wall began his day at Gold’s Gym for some weight training and stretching. Later in the afternoon he returned to his old high school for some shooting drills. The day concluded at the local community center where John’s sister held her high school graduation party. The community center was packed with friends, family, and tasty soul food. John bought his sister a car for her graduation and later announced he had bought his mom a house.

Potter Mania has finally come to Orlando, Florida!

For nearly three years, Go To Team’s Orlando-based DP/Partner Dan Beckmann, has been working with Universal Orlando Resort on the opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

From documentation of the initial construction, to behind the scenes with the stars of the films, Orlando’s Go To Team has been covering it all!

During opening week, Beckmann and Executive Producer Sue Stauffer, coordinated 4 HD crews – shooting on VariCam’s and HDX 900 cameras, Beckmann’s team captured material for the Today Show with Al Roker, managed to drink some Butter Beer and Pumpkin juice with the stars of the Harry Potter films, interviewed author J.K. Rowling, and even hung out with Academy Award winning composer John Williams, whose score of the Harry Potter films (and countless others) has been heard the world over!

Go To Team’s Lead Digital Artist Giovanni Sensat, edited and supervised “Sizzle Reels” and Electronic Press Kits throughout the event.

“What Universal Orlando has done with Harry Potter is really, really fantastic,” said Daniel Radcliffe at the opening ceremony. “We’re all kind of very grateful that the next part of the Harry Potter legacy has been so well-done and so well-made.”

The park’s marquee attraction, Hogwarts Castle, is home to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey! The ride, filled with ground-breaking special effects, takes guests on a flight through Harry Potter’s life, including encounters with Dementors, and dragons.

Hogwarts also allows guests to journey through Headmaster Albus Dumbledore’s office, the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, and many other well-known spots found throughout the books and films.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter also has two roller coasters, Flight of the Hippogriff and Dragon Challenge, as well as stores like Zonko’s Joke Shop, Honeydukes Confectionary and Ollivander’s Wand Shop.

“We have brought to life a cultural phenomenon that has captured the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world,” said Bill Davis, president of Universal Orlando Resort.

Col. Oliver North’s “War Stories” on Fox News always has some of the most compelling tales of wars and warriors on television. When the show visited Ft. Monroe, Virginia to do a story on modern machines used in war, Fox booked Go To Team’s Modisett crew to make it super cool. The show interviewed Gen. H.R. McMaster, an expert in modern war machines. The crew was amazed (and a little scared) to hear all of the latest and greatest advances in killing technology. All I know is you better to be on the side that is going to win. Go America!

Raleigh Crew Covers Tribute to UVA Women’s Lacrosse Player

A week after the tragic death of University of Virginia Women’s Lacrosse player, Yeardley Love, the women’s lacrosse team returned to the field for the first round of the NCAA Division 1 playoffs against Towson University. With the blessing of the Love family, nearly everything about the game seemed to honor Love’s memory during warm-ups: the Cavaliers wore T-shirts that read “One Team. One Heart. One Love.” On their jerseys, they wore black patches with Love’s name embroidered in white.

ESPN broadcast the game live without commercial interruption with the help of Go To Team’s Raleigh crew, who helped bridge quarters with memorial elements to honor Love.

The game had one of the largest attendance in the history of the school for women’s lacrosse. UVA defeated Towson to move on to the second round against University of North Carolina.

One week later, ESPN and Go To Team’s Jimmy Hall reunited for the UVA vs. UNC women’s lacrosse quarterfinals. The grieving UVA team fell to UNC 17-7.

Charleston based Dave Baker and Charlotte based Nick Modisett recently found themselves on the Port Charleston’s Union Port Terminal with travel expert Lynn O’Rourke Hayes. Go To Team captured the KEF Satellite Media Tour for the announcement of year round cruises out of Charleston, SC by Carnival Cruise Lines. Baker and Modisett used a pair of the ubiquitous and ever faithful Sony D600 Beta Sp cameras equipped with Canon HD Lenses. They supplemented the beautiful sunlight with 400 watt Bron Kobold HMI’s. Between the 4am call time and the noon wrap, the “Tour” covered over 20 cities, proving once again that with Go To Team, it is all smooth sailing!

Hitting the links in South Carolina? Before you jump the gun on where to tee up, checkout PGA.com to see what they consider ‘The Dream 18 of South Carolina”. It’s a tour of the best holes on the best courses in SC.

Armed with the Sony F900 the crew shot five out of the 18 holes. Go To Team’s tour began in Hilton Head at Harbor Town’s home of the Heritage Classic PGA Golf Tournament and the world famous #18 par-four, considered one of the most feared in all of golf. A few miles down the road, Go To Team’s Raleigh crew checked out Palmetto Dunes’ Robert Trent Jones’ signature hole, the par-five 10th, and its breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. This hole has the distinction of being one of only two oceanfront holes on Hilton Head Island. That was a wrap for Day One.. wheels up for Charleston, SC!

Day 2: Go To Team’s Jimmy Hall started the day on Charleston’s Island Resort Wild Dunes and ended day on The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. Harry Potter Stars at Hogsmeade Village

Orlando DP/Partner Dan Beckmann led the GTT team as they helped give fans world-wide, a glimpse of the film stars as they embarked on a VIP tour of the soon-to-open Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

Beckmann got the morning off to a rousing start, by helping Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) announce (live on The Today Show) classroom winners that will be invited to the Grand Opening of the Wizarding World on 18 June.

After the Today Show, Emma Watson, and several other Potter stars, (Robbie Coltrane, James and Oliver Phelps and Matthew Lewis) toured Hogsmeade Village: sampling Butterbeer and Pumpkin Juice, various jokes from Zonko’s Joke Shop, and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans at HoneyDukes.

Go To Team’s Orlando-based Cameraman Dan Lowrey, helped Beckmann’s team capture b-roll and interviews of the Universal Executives taking the stars along the V.I.P Tour.

The Stars Getting Their First Taste of Butterbeer

Emma Watson even received her very own wand inside Ollivanders Wand Shop! And there was entertainment throughout the village, as all the stars got to experience the embodiment of the stories and phenomenon they’ve helped create.

Their day culminated with a ride on the state-of-the-art, Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey!
