Macon, Georgia is not only popular for its historic spots but also known for their Southern Hospitality. Macon was designed to be a city in a park and amazingly, the legacy is maintained. It also houses the delightful sweet-scented Cherry Blossoms that blooms during late March and so the Cherry Blossom Festival is celebrated.

Every year during springtime, Macon, Georgia honors the blossoming of a whooping 300,000 Yoshino Cherry Trees donated by a resident named William Fickling. You are welcome to enjoy the friendliness of the Southern City as they feast to the Pinkest Party in the world, the Cherry Blossom Festival.

The highlights of the festival includes Central City Park Nightly Concerts, The Kachunga Alligator Show, Cherry Blossom Fashion Show, a Fabulous street party and so much more!

Schedule of Events are as follows:

  • Central City Park Nightly Concerts
    From March 16 to 25 at Central City Park, concerts are available every night and best of all, it’s free!
  • Kachunga Alligator Show
    Another amazing free admission event at the Central City Park where alligators are the star of the show. Three shows are hosted everyday.
  • Cherry Blossom Gala
    Mark your Calendar on the 16th of March, the Cherry Blossom Gala will be held at the Macon City Auditorium. Tickets are available here.
  • Tunes and Balloons
    Enjoy the tunes and the hot air balloons on March 17 at 4 in the afternoon in the Macon State College. Tickets are available here. Free for children 6 years old and below.
  • Bed Race
    Register you group to join the bed race at Cherry Street in Downotwn Macon. Go ahead and race with your team! You can register here.
  • Parade
    The Parade will be held on March 18 at 3pm in Downtown Macon. Admission is free but you need to have the parade application. Click here for the Parade Application.
  • Music for the World by the Middle GA Concert Band
    Free admission concert at Porter Auditorium, Wesleyan College. Enjoy a night of Music on March 18.
  • Third Street Park Festivities
    From Monday to Friday at 11:30 to 1:30 pm, third street park festivities are celebrated. Free Admission!
  • Authors Luncheon
    Join the Authors Luncheon at Idle Hour Country Club on March 20, 11;30am. Tickets are available here.
  • Broadway in Bloom: A Dinner Cabaret

    The Grand Finale will be held at Wesleyan College on March 25pm. Free admisssion so everyone can come and have fun.

Ocmulgee National Monument preserves traces of over ten millennia of Southeastern Native American culture, including major earthworks built more than 1,000 years ago by Mississippian culture peoples: the Great Temple and other ceremonial mounds, a burial mound, and defensive trenches. They represented highly skilled engineering techniques and soil knowledge, and the organization of many laborers. The 702-acre park is located on the east bank of the Ocmulgee River. Present-day Macon, Georgia has developed around the site.

The cemetery serves as the final resting place for thousands of people. There are over a thousand confederate soldier graves located in the cemetery; there are also graves for three GA governors, 31 mayors, and several senators/congressmen. Several notable entertainers are buried in the cemetery as well. Currently owned and maintained by the City of Macon, the cemetery is both the oldest and the largest of all 33 cemeteries located within the city.

More than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined at the prison between February 1864 – April 1865,. More than 12,000 died from disease, malnutrition, overcrowding, and exposure.

The site of Camp Sumter, also known as Andersonville Prison, is now part of Andersonville National Historic Site. The Andersonville National Historic Site has three main features including the National Prisoner of War Museum, the historic prison site, and the Andersonville National Cemetery.

Andersonville National Historic Site is the only park in the National Park System that serves as a memorial to all American prisoners of war. Congress stated in the authorizing legislation that this park’s purpose is “to provide an understanding of the overall prisoner of war story of the Civil War, to interpret the role of prisoner of war camps in history, to commemorate the sacrifice of Americans who lost their lives in such camps, and to preserve the monuments located within the site.”

Visit the National POW Museum

Opened in 1998, the National Prisoner of War Museum tells the story of prisoners of war throughout American History. This facility doubles as the park’s visitor center and is the best place to begin a visit.

 

Visit the Andersonville National Cemetery

Andersonville National Cemetery was established to provide a permanent place of honor for those who died in military service to our country. The initial interments, beginning in February 1864, were those who died in the nearby prisoner of war camp. Today the cemetery contains nearly 20,000 interments. Administered by the National Park Service, Andersonville National Cemetery uses the same eligibility criteria as cemeteries administered by the National Cemetery Administration of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Visit the Historic Prison Site

The site of Camp Sumter (Andersonville Prison), the most famous of the prison camps of the Civil War, is preserved as part of the National Historic Site.

Tour Andersonville National Historic Site

Every day at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM park rangers and volunteers lead programs which explore the history of the Andersonville Prison during the Civil War.

Located in Macon, GA, it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974. It was built from 1855 to 1859 in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, a marked contrast to the more restrained Greek Revival architecture of the antebellum period.

The Hay House is open for tours, weddings, and events.
