By 2020, approximately 363,000 residents over the age of 50 will live in Fairfax County. Learn about available services, programs and options to consider for the future. Keynote speaker is Robert E. Simon Jr., founder of Reston.

As you know, I have been a huge fan of Thai Luang for some time, both because of the food and the friendly staff. When I learned that the friendly staff and the chef had started Thai Tada together, I just had to try it!

The staff was very welcoming and happy to see us, and the food was fantastic!! I am a big fan of the Cashew Chicken and the Pad Thai. My kids love the sun dried beef appetizer (a dish that had been removed from the thai luang menu). We were very excited to see it back and hope it stays on the menu.

It’s a little farther away for us, but we will definitely be regular customers of Thai Tada!

When you find a local restaurant with great food and friendly people, you just have to do all you can to support them!

Here’s how it works: Go to the Web site, www.odwalla.com/plantatree, enter your e-mail address, and choose the state park in which you would like Odwalla to plant a tree. Only one per person.

Odwalla will plant the tree in the chosen state. This program runs until Aug. 15, 2010 or until 175,000 trees are donated. The cost of the trees is paid by Odwalla. Should a state not accept the donated tree, the donation would benefit a non-profit organization, which would plant the tree.

The Great American Backyard Campout, co-sponsored by American Girl and Hershey’s, will benefit National Wildlife Federation’s Be Out There campaign, whose mission is to return to children what they don’t even know they’ve lost: their connection to the natural world. Kids today spend twice as much time indoors as their parents did, missing out on the simple pleasures and lasting mental and physical health benefits of daily outdoor time.

Be the Leader: Orientation Set for Invasive Plant Management Leaders
Thursday, June 17, 2010
Learn the leadership and organizational skills that will help you manage a group of volunteers as you search for invasive plants before they gain a foothold and choke out the native plants. This is part of the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) program.

During this orientation, you will be taught how to survey an area of the parkland, identify the invasive plants and use a hand-held GPS unit to mark their location and log the information into a website.

There are only six open slits per session, so sign up quickly.

For more information about the EDRR program, scheduled excursions or how to become involved, contact Kathy Frederick, Invasive Management Area Volunteer Coordinator, at (703) 324-8681 or e-mail katherine.frederick@fairfaxcounty.gov.
Weed Warriors Project – English Ivy
Saturday, June 26, 2010
10 a.m. to Noon
For ages 13 or older
Location: First entrance to Old Trail Drive, heading east toward Soapstone Drive from Reston Parkway

Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive exotic plants like English Ivy, Japanese Honeysuckle and Bamboo. These fast growing, invasive plants escape from people’s yards and seriously threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations.

RA needs warriors to join us in rescuing Reston’s beautiful parkland from these aggressive plants. Spend a couple of hours every 4th Saturday of each month as we help restore Reston’s forests to their natural state.

Long pants and long sleeves are recommended; there will be poison ivy. Water, work gloves and tools will be provided.
