Aging In Reston: A Community Forum for the Hunter Mill District
Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, 1–5 p.m.
Reston Community Center – Hunters Woods
By 2020, approximately 363,000 residents over the age of 50 will live in Fairfax County. As a result, many people are planning how they can retire gracefully and comfortably in the community they love. Residents are invited to participate in this education session about needs and services for older adults in Reston and surrounding areas, and how they can create an aging-in-place community model that best serves their needs. Learn about available services, programs and options to consider for the future. Keynote speaker is Robert E. Simon Jr., founder of Reston. He will talk about his original village concept that includes housing for everyone.
Take the survey to gauge the aging-in-place concerns of residents. Your responses will be used to shape the agenda for the October forum. For more details: www.aginginreston.org. Sponsored by the office of Supervisor Cathy Hudgins.

If you are at least 21 and can supervise a large group of people, complete data sheets and walk in wooded, floodplain areas, you could be a great site leader. Site leaders are responsible for:
1. Picking up all of their groups’ supplies from RA Central Services Facilities. Supplies include: bags, gloves, signs, first aid kit, vest, hazardous materials bottle, clipboard, waiver forms, data sheets and a list of their volunteers for their site the day before (Friday).
2. Attend a one-hour evening training session hosted by a RA watershed supervisor.
3. Arriving at their clean-up location by 9:30 a.m. to meet and register their volunteers who should arrive by 10 a.m.
4. Giving a short safety speech (this will be provided) and hand out all supplies (trash bags, gloves, water bottles.)
5. Leaders make sure that volunteers behave responsibly and safely.
6. Leaders must have a functioning cell phone to report any problems or emergencies to RA staff or request additional supplies, if needed.
7. Finally, site leaders should return any unused supplies to PWC within a week following the event, along with their volunteer sign-in sheet marked with the items their team recovered from the clean-up site. These lists help us compile the full extent of trash, debris and tires collected out of the streams, and will be published on our Web site.

RESTON COMMUNITY CENTER 2010 PREFERENCE POLL
Candidacy Registrations Begins On August 30

RESTON, VA — The Reston Community Center (RCC) is seeking interested candidates to run for a seat on its 2010-2011 Board of Governors. The Board of Governors is a nine-member body responsible for overseeing the operation of the RCC. All residents of Small District 5, ages 18 or older, are eligible to run for appointment to the RCC Board of Governors. Candidates must complete a Candidacy Statement in order to have their names placed on the Preference Poll ballot. Candidacy Statements will be available at the Center or online at www.restoncommunitycenter.com beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 30. The deadline for candidacy registration is 5 p.m. on Monday, September 13.

This year’s preference poll will fill three positions on the RCC’s Board of Governors. Board members serve a three-year term.

The Fairfax county Board of Supervisors established the RCC Board of Governors to represent the interests of the residents of Small District 5 on issues affecting the Community Center. Board appointments are actually made by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors after residents of Small District 5 have made their preferences known in the annual poll.

The RCC Preference Poll is a community event held annually to select members to serve on the RCC Board of Governors. The Board of Governors establishes the overall policies for the Center and oversees its programs and budget. Board members also represent the Community Center at social, recreational, cultural and educational activities in Reston. Each year, typically, candidates for three seats on the Board are subject to a community preference poll with voting by residents and businesses. Online, mail-in balloting and walk-in voting will be available from September 23 – October 14 until 5 p.m.

For more information on the 2010 RCC Preference Poll or Board of Governors, please visit our website at www.restoncommunitycenter.com or call the Center at (703) 476-4500.

On July 17, volunteers searched wetland sites in Reston for dragonflies. Over 16 species and 450 dragonflies were counted.
Reston Community Center – Hunters Woods
By 2020, approximately 363,000 residents over the age of 50 will live in Fairfax County. Learn about available services, programs and options to consider for the future. Keynote speaker is Robert E. Simon Jr., founder of Reston. It is joined by the Ivy Rose Band, Midnight Mike and El Parque, among others.

Filipino American Stephanie Reese, the popular international singer, will perform a mini-concert this Saturday (July 31), from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the main stage.
