I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in late 2006, and became totally Gluten Free February of 2007. My sister, as well as her daughter, were also diagnosed in 2006. My daughter was diagnosed at the age of 2, in 2008, after becoming the "poster child" for Celiac Disease. She had the protruding belly, became very thin, didn't want to eat, and was quite mellow for her age. Thanks to my sister, who is also a dietician, I knew exactly what to look for and had her tested. (She was also tested at age one, and was negative for CD). We all had the intestinal biopsy to confirm the blood test findings. My daughter had severe damage, but after 3 weeks on the gluten free diet, she was like a different child. She liked to eat, she looked great, she had the energy of a 2 year old... it was amazing to me.

My daughter and I are very different in our reactions to gluten. I never had many symptoms, only headaches and mouth ulcers. Honestly, before my daughter was diagnosed, I occasionally cheated when all I could get was regular beer or just had to have a bite of pizza. Since her diagnosis, however, I am diligent about trying to avoid gluten. She is very sensitive if she accidentally ingests gluten. It has happened a handful of times since her diagnosis and every single time she begins vomiting approximately 2-3 hours after ingestion. Once it is out of her system (how long it lasts is directly related to how much gluten she ingested), she sleeps for a while and is then absolutely fine. She is my "canary in the coal mine". Obviously, I would never give her gluten on purpose, but she is 5 years old and a parent can only control so much.

I have learned a lot about being gluten free through my own diagnosis, my sister and niece, but especially having a child with Celiac Disease. Asheville is such a great place to be with this kind of dietary restriction. Lucky for us, there are several stores and restaurants that cater to gluten free eating. I decided to try and share some of our experiences because we have had both positive and negative while out there trying to navigate our gluten free world. My daughter just started kindergarten so this will be a whole new learning experience for me.

I am a working mother of 2, and have never blogged before, so be patient with me on this new journey. Did I mention we are vegetarian as well??Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1651873080078235160.post-55721220646686363642010-11-01T13:32:00.000-07:002010-11-01T13:32:04.903-07:00Asheville GIG Gluten Free Holiday Potluck - November 7th, 2010Gluten-Free Holiday Potluck!
The Home of Sheila Horine

This is our biggest social event of the year. All members of Asheville GIG and the Hendersonville Celiac Support Groups and families are encouraged to attend. Please bring one or two covered dishes to share, being sure to provide an ingredient list or recipe to place with your dish. We need a variety of dishes including entrees and vegetables in addition to the wonderful breads and desserts that our members have contributed in the past. Please remember that many of our members cannot consume dairy or nuts and we would like to have some dishes to accommodate these individuals as well.

GIG will provide paper products, beverages (non-alcoholic), turkey and ham. You will get directions when you RSVP (you can RSVP up til Sunday AM!)

For questions about the Holiday Party, contact Sheila Horine at 274-8532.

Once again, GIG will NOT be charging dues for the upcoming year. However, we will have a donation jar available for those individuals who wish to help us out. Lastly, we will also have a short survey available to fill out. There will be very few questions. The focus will be on discovering your interests and needs for our meetings. (For those of you who cannot attend, I will be sending the survey via email in December.)

In this season of Thanksgiving I want to take the opportunity to send thanks to everyone who has attended our meetings in 2010. I hope to see ALL of you at our meetings in 2011! Support goes both ways.. Thanks also to all of you who have helped at our meetings. It sure makes a big difference to me! I am also thankful for all the new information and gluten-free products on the market. It is SO much easier to be gluten-free these days!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
Raleigh, N.C., USA, April 30, 2010 – The Gluten Free Raleigh Blog has announced Governor Beverly Perdue has declared May 2010 “Celiac Disease Awareness Month” in North Carolina. The Gluten Free Raleigh Blog and Pat Berger, leader of the North Raleigh Celiac Sprue Association (CSA) Support Group brought the petition to the Governor’s office regarding the awareness month.

Celiac Disease is a genetic autoimmune disease that affects one in 133 people in the United States. It interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food and can cause gastrointestinal and neurological issues, infertility, skin rashes and cancer. The only treatment for Celiac Disease is lifelong, strict adherence to a gluten-free diet.

“The Governor’s proclamation paves the way to further educate the community on Celiac Disease and helps to create a positive impact on the quality of life for people living with this condition,” said Zach Becker, creator of the Gluten Free Raleigh Blog. “It’s my goal to help raise awareness so those living with this disease can safely eat out at restaurants and have easier access to gluten-free food.”

In an effort to educate, raise awareness and give back to the community, there are a number of gluten-free events scheduled during the month of May.

• A gluten-free food drive will be held on Saturday, May 8 to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. They will be preparing dishes from Maltin’s gluten-free cookbook entitled The Gloriously Gluten-Free Cookbook: Spicing Up Life with Italian, Asian and Mexican Recipes. Copies of the cookbook will also be included. Tickets are required for this dining event and can be purchased by calling Bella Monica Italian Restaurant at 919-881-9778.

• The Gluten Free Raleigh Blog worked with Sofia Noble of the design firm This Is Beautiful to create a poster featuring all of the top food allergens, including gluten. This poster is now available for download in English and Spanish at the Gluten Free Raleigh Blog. Wake County restaurant owners may use it to educate their staffs about these foods.

“Research indicates there are approximately three million people living with Celiac Disease in the United States and of those, only about 120,000 have been diagnosed,” said Alice Bast, founder and president of the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA). “It’s great to see North Carolina working to raise awareness about this disease so perhaps others can be accurately diagnosed by their doctors. Zach Becker and the entire North Carolina Celiac Disease community should be commended for their leadership and successful advocacy efforts.”

About Gluten Free Raleigh Blog
Zach Becker was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in May 2008. He founded the Gluten Free Raleigh Blog in August 2008 and has created similar blogs across the state. He has recruited writers for these blogs so gluten-free information in those communities can be shared. The blogs contain restaurant and grocery store reviews, summaries of national news as well as highlight local companies that cater to the gluten-free community. Becker is an advocate for those living with Celiac Disease in the Triangle and donates his time to educate the newly diagnosed, local restaurants and government leaders on this condition.Zachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13820276206174428000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1651873080078235160.post-51411825625569608072010-01-08T13:03:00.001-08:002010-01-08T13:05:33.094-08:00Earth Fare - Gluten Free TourTwo Upcoming Gluten Free Tours at Earth Fare...

South Asheville Earth Fare
Date: January 21, 2010
Time: 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Admission: Free
Contact: Jennifer.Brewer@earthfare.com
Join us for a guided store tour of how to shop for gluten-free products. But alas, we are in Asheville now, and it's only getting better here by the day.

After stopping off to visit with family in Texas and Georgia, we finally arrived in Asheville on Saturday evening. So Sunday morning we were more than eager to go downtown and meet our new city.

We looked online for a list of restaurants that would allow us to sit outside with our big dog, Waylon. And we walked around a while to see what all was available.

Taylor's parents had reminisced about a wonderful meal enjoyed at Carmel's Restaurant, but at first glance we imagined that the alfresco eatery would be beyond our price range. Finally after a stroll to size up our dog-friendly options, the host at Carmel profusely complimented Waylon's good looks--which, of course, demonstrated his impeccable taste and causing us to like the place instantly.

After a quick perusal of the menu, we realized that the lunch price list at this fine restaurant was not at all shocking, not even a little bit appalling, rather, it was modest. Not bad at all.

Our waiter was very understanding about my food sensitivities or "allergies" as I usually call them at restaurants. But I decided to make things easy and ordered just a plate of grilled ham and bacon. What can I say, I'm a meat eater.

Taylor, who does not always adhere to a sympathetic gluten-free diet on mine and Waylon's behalf, ordered shrimp and grits which he is still raving about, calling it "the best meal he's ever had." And though my plate looked far less impressive, I've got to say, I am still puzzled as to how that bacon was so incredibly good.

If I were a less picky eater, I imagine there would have been more options available to me besides the obvious meats or bunless burgers, but honestly, I'd go back and get the same thing all over again. The service was wonderful, the atmosphere at our sidewalk table was ideal for a summer day and I still don't know why that bacon was so darn good.

Carmel's Restaurant and Bar is located at:
1 Page Avenue
Suite 129
Asheville, NC 28801Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1651873080078235160.post-76189602040402404622009-05-29T11:58:00.000-07:002009-05-29T12:36:04.881-07:00Greenlife THE G-free Asheville Grocery?
For reasons of price and availability, I have become accustomed to shopping at not one, but two major groceries here in San Francisco: Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

At Whole Foods I can find Waylon's beef-free, gluten-free raw dog food, some local produce and Kinnikinnick gluten-free breads. But at Trader Joe's I can buy Two Buck Chuck Chardonnay which is vegan--and therefore casein free--and obviously just $2 and awesome chicken apple sausages packs for $4.

So while it does require two trips, I've got my San Fran shopping down, but where will I shop once we're in Asheville? Well, for those of you who are local, you already know much more than I do, and suggestions are quite welcome. But for those who are just visiting, let me tell you, I can't seem to hear enough praise for Greenlife Grocery. So much so that I've even developed a twinkle in my eye when I hear a house we are considering is near Greenlife!

I've not yet been to this much-praised grocery, but here is what I hear:
-They are even more progressive than Whole Foods.
-Local foods like produce and meats abound.
-They offer classes and events.
-And they are a valuable asset to the community.

Okay, I'm sold. On June 12th, the day we arrive after a cross-country journey, while Taylor is fast asleep recovering from the drive and I should be too, I'm guessing instead that Greenlife is where I'll be. Seriously, I may just be a little bit grocery-store-obsessed.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1651873080078235160.post-66560936605895233382009-05-22T15:38:00.000-07:002009-05-22T15:41:05.260-07:00San-J Wheat-Free Soy in Lower Sodium and Portable Packets

Will eating a gluten-free sushi meal be getting just a bit easier?

The reason for the popularity being that unlike the high fructose corn syrupy cokes that are bottled in the states, Mexican bottlers still use cane sugar. Making this a favorite among many a Coke fan, especially chefs who claim that the imported variety cooks down nicely, while the local version, simply does not.

Taylor rounded up some Old Rip Van Winkle Bourbon, I tracked down the imported Coca-Colas. Then I did my gluten-free homework and verified that regular Coke is indeed gluten-free, and so is Old Rip Van Winkle according to chemist Truman Cox:

To summarize, our process should denature and remove any allergens from our products. Memories of Sunday mornings in New Orleans. Memories of baby donuts.

Mimi's Deli was near our house, and though they did not have the widest selection of groceries, they did have the best quality beef around and a very special treat in their freezer section: packages of small, cinnamon and sugar sprinkled donuts, which after a brief warm up in the toaster oven were divine!

I have not eaten a donut in years, but now that I can't (because of gluten), I do sometimes walk past the fresh boxes of donuts and dream.

So I was utterly shocked when in the freezer section (next to the g/f waffles) of my local Whole Foods Market, there was not one, but two different flavors of gluten-free, casein-free donuts!

Of course, I had to opt. for the cinnamon and sugar "baby donuts" by Kinnikinnick, maker of my favorite gluten-free bread.

Review:
-a little bit too sugary, but then I don't eat much sugar anymore, with some wiped off, they're perfect!
-they took a bit longer to heat in the microwave than the package indicated, though I wonder if they'd be even better made in a toaster oven?
-I LOVE that they're not at all greasy and have just 4.5g of fat per donuts.
-Overall, great tasting, great texture, not guiltless, but not too unhealthy either.

A perfect Sunday morning treat from time to time!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1651873080078235160.post-50980585579008475362009-05-05T23:49:00.000-07:002009-05-06T06:01:57.816-07:00I Can't Wait to Try: Well-Bred CafeThanks to Zach for the warm welcome, and for setting up these great local resource sites! But as soon as we arrive, I will be stopping in for one of these amazing gluten-free delights!

Here is a list of Well-Bred's gluten-free menu items:
Espresso Roulade
Swedish Creams
Crème Brulee
English Toffee
Double Chocolate MacaroonsUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1651873080078235160.post-85417681719663942612009-05-02T09:08:00.000-07:002009-05-04T08:22:59.522-07:00New Guest Asheville Blogger - Kristen CampbellAllow me to introduce Kristen Campbell who will become a guest blogger for Gluten Free Asheville.

See my post over at Gluten Free Raleigh about Kristen.

More to come from Kristen and her Asheville experiences very soon!

Stay tuned.Zachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13820276206174428000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1651873080078235160.post-7465696830449650482009-04-23T05:26:00.000-07:002009-04-23T05:28:39.206-07:00Naturally Kerr - The New Kerr DrugCheck out this article from the Raleigh News & Observer's Sue Stock about a brand new concept from Kerr Drug called Naturally Kerr.

The Raleigh company has revamped one store in Asheville and one in Raleigh into a new model called Naturally Kerr. In those stores, nonhealth categories such as automotive and hardware were removed. Their space was filled with a wide range of natural and organic products. The stores stock such items as gluten-free and allergy-free foods, kids' organic vitamins and supplements, and organic pet supplies and toys. There is also a natural baby section with organic diapers, lotions and other products. Along with sections dedicated to natural and organic products, there are also more of those items scattered throughout the stores. So far, the Asheville store (at 1124 Patton Avenue) and the Raleigh store, are the only two Naturally Kerr stores in the works. The company says it might add more locations if the idea proves popular.
Kerr Drug? Who woulda thunk they'd be a resource for Gluten Free items? Regardless, Naturally Kerr stores open in Raleigh and Asheville on Earth Day, April 22. What I do know is that the Natural and Organic categories will include wheat-free/gluten free baking mixes, grains, desserts, snacks, cereals; breakfast products; candy, cookies, crackers; meals-to-go, entrees and soups; juices; pastas and sauces; organic pet food; coffees and teas and a variety of pantry items. I'll see if I can do a little more digging about what is actually carried. I don't think they have a frozen foods section at this point. More to come.

Zachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13820276206174428000noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1651873080078235160.post-46193840467740942072009-02-24T05:20:00.001-08:002009-02-24T05:32:40.972-08:00Bella Monica Flatbread Company Update - Earth FareMore exciting news for Bella Monica Flatbread Company and their fans...

I wrote previously on the Gluten Free Raleigh Blog about Bella Monica pizzas being available in the Raleigh and Cary Whole Foods store in addition to Harmony Farms.

I have just received word that their Gluten Free Pizzas are also now available in all Earth Fare stores in North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.
