GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is honored to be named one of the top three minority/women-owned businesses in Colorado in 2013 by the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce. The honorees were selected from dozens of nominations and underwent an extensive review process by the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, a business leadership organization with a statewide focus that advocates for more than 3,000 businesses and their 300,000 employees.

The top three businesses in the minority/women-owned category, along with five other categories, were honored April 26 in Denver at a business awards luncheon titled “18 Stories” featuring video montages of the 18 selected businesses and nonprofit organizations.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized as one of the top businesses in Colorado,” said Cynthia Banks, executive director and CEO of GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. “Our company is proud to have contributed to the Colorado economy for 23 years as an international business with a mission to change the world through international education.”

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is also ranked 11th in the 2013 listing of the largest women-owned businesses in Colorado by ColoradoBIZ
Magazine, and consistently ranks among the top 20 in the publication’s annual survey. The Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce in 2009 named GlobaLinks Learning Abroad its Small Company of the Year.

The Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce will highlight the work of this year’s honorees on its Wall of Fame. Kelly Brough, president and CEO of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, told the luncheon audience, “The companies today have shown how they took really cool ideas and brought them to our community.”

Personal brand guru Erik Deckers gave some of his best secrets away as the featured speaker at the Pen & Podium event hosted by GlobaLinks Learning Abroad for its partners attending the Forum Conference in Chicago earlier this month.

About 150 people attended this year’s event, titled “Pen & Podium, an Author’s Talk, Book Signing & Cocktail Reception.” Deckers, author of the book ‘Branding Yourself,’ gave a 25-minute presentation.

“His book is a key component of our internship program’s Personal Branding Toolkit and was very warmly received,” said Barbara M. West, director of internship programs. “Our partners were able to meet Erik afterwards and get their book signed. Also, STA Travel co-sponsored this event with GlobaLinks, and provided a $500 travel voucher which was raffled off at the end of the event.”

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is welcoming back Mona M. Miller as director of university partner study abroad programs overseeing the company’s largest set of study abroad programs around the world and managing various levels of program staff.

“Mona brings a wealth of experience in international education to this vital position, and we are fortunate to already know her well as a longtime colleague and past director in our organization,” said Cynthia Banks, executive director and CEO of GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. “She has a long and respected history in education abroad including initial service in the Peace Corps, tenure as a study abroad director in Wisconsin and Colorado, and a leadership role in our own company building the EuroLearn program from 4 students to 250 in just two years. Mona has done many and varied project assignments for us, and we are thrilled to have her back.”

Most recently, Miller was an international education consultant working on a variety of projects. Previously, she was director, Europe partnerships and development, for GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. This followed positions as director of customized faculty led programs for International Studies Abroad, director of study abroad for Colorado State University’s Office of International Programs, and program coordinator of study abroad for the University of Wisconsin’s Center for International Education. Before that, Miller spent more than seven years with the U.S. Peace Corps in a variety of roles and international locations.

“I have great loyalty and commitment to GlobaLinks Learning Abroad and am excited to return to such a reputable organization in this new leadership role,” said Miller. “This company has achieved so much in its 23 years, and I look forward to helping it innovate and grow so it can broaden its impact in international education and leave lasting imprints on more students’ lives.”

Miller has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Oklahoma City University, attended the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver, and earned a master’s degree in intercultural management from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vt.

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is welcoming Jill Zack to its team as director of marketing and communications.

In this role, Zack will oversee the strategic marketing communications, public relations, advertising and development of GlobaLinks Learning Abroad’s international brand and reputation.

“Jill is a senior-level marketing executive with a 13-year record of achievement in creative messaging and branding for a diverse roster of organizations,” said Cynthia Banks, executive director and CEO of GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. “She also is an entrepreneurial leader and community volunteer who brings a wealth of executive-level marketing and management experience. I look forward to working with her as our team implements strategies that will take our organization to the next level in international education.”

Zack also is principal of Zack and Associates, LLC, a creative agency based in Arvada, Colo. Previously, she was director of marketing and communications for the University of New Mexico Foundation, founding national marketing manager of SouthwestRe, executive director/project manager for Verde Studios, and website news producer for World Now/KRQE News 13 in Albuquerque.

“It is a privilege to join such a reputable and worthy driven organization,” said Zack. “GlobaLinks Learning Abroad strongly aligns with my belief that as U.S. citizens we can all benefit from an expansive view of our diverse and global community. Zack has a bachelor’s degree in communications and journalism from the University of New Mexico, and has received awards including New Mexico Business Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40 Business Executive, American Marketing Association’s National Marketer of the Year Nominee, Gold Award Recipient from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, YWCA’s Young Woman on the Move Award, and a graduate of Leadership New Mexico.

Zack also volunteers for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and at Weber Elementary School.

Erik Deckers’ own personal brand will be on exhibit April 4 as he gives the “Pen & Podium” author’s talk and book signing hosted by Globalinks Learning Abroad for attendees of the Forum conference in Chicago.

The co-author of “Branding Yourself: How to Use Social Media to Invent or Reinvent Yourself” is slated to educate attendees on the best (and worst) ways to build a personal brand through social media and face-to-face networking, whether an individual is new to the job market, or re-entering the job market from an old job or long hiatus.

Besides writing books, Deckers has more than 20 years of experience in sales, marketing and public relations, and has kept ahead of the curve by learning social media marketing and teaching himself Search Engine Optimization.

A humor columnist since 1994 and a blogger since 1997, Deckers has walked the talk of building a personal brand, and learned and adopted early on the increasingly powerful social media tools and blogging platforms, including mastering Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, among others. In 2008, Deckers became co-owner and vice president of content marketing for Professional Blog Service in Indianapolis.

Through all of the career growth, Deckers has taught others. “I answered questions constantly,” he says.

And in regularly educating others on how to go about defining themselves, Deckers wound up adding yet another layer to his own brand. “I looked at what I’d done, and how I’d become recognized by people, and I realized, that’s my brand.”

So, with many followers of his blog and social media feeds, Deckers developed extensive expertise in creating a personal brand. What interested him most was watching people look for ways to define or redefine themselves.

“How do I let an employer know who I am and what I can do? It seems like social media is going to be the best and the most effective way to do it.”

“I’ve always had the teacher’s mindset,” he says. “I always liked being in front of a group of people. (The “Branding Yourself”) book is a way to share knowledge and affect lives in a more passive way. It’s on their schedule rather than on my schedule, making people listen to me.”

Without giving away his upcoming speech, here are a few of Deckers’ personal branding tips:

For students:

-       Make sure your Facebook profile presents you in a good light.

-       Build your LinkedIn profile by your junior year.

-       Set up a Twitter profile and use it properly because many business professionals are using it. “It’s still the ultimate business and social tool,” Deckers says.

For everyone:

-       People who want to be thought leaders or stand out from the crowd need to think about blogging. “Even if you only post 2 times a month, if you’ve been doing that for a few years, it builds. Use blogging to display your brilliance or show why you are good at what you do.”

-       Blogging and social media are free, or at least cheap.

-       Blogging and social media are time consuming. But anything worth doing is going to take time.

-       Never allow a photo to be taken that gives evidence of a bad decision. “The internet never forgets,” Deckers says.

Cape Town, South Africa: Here comes Karen Cowles and her well-focused camera.

The GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Alumni Ambassador from Plymouth State University is the recent winner of the GoAbroad Cover Photo Contest and Spring Break Giveaway.

Cowles winning photo of three colorful kayaks on a sunlit shoreline originated from her travels in New Zealand through studying abroad with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad.

For other travelers interested in studying abroad, Cowles says that the best thing to bring on the trip is a sense of adventure: “Being in a new country provides endless opportunities for exploration. Studying travel guides before you depart is a good way to become familiar with the sites and attractions in your new country. Use this opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and do as much as you possibly can, see as much of the country as possible, and come up with innovative and creative ways to stretch your finances to make your study abroad a remarkable experience.”

GoAbroad launched the contest in October as a chance for students to showcase their best travel photography on GoAbroad’s Facebook page, with participants entered to win an alternative spring break volunteer trip around the world. After a month of online voting in January, GoAbroad announced Cowles as the first winner.

Cowles’  will travel to Cape Town via Connect-123 Internship and Volunteer Programs.
