Glass painting is HOT! Not only is it fun, but it’s also easy for beginners. Painting glassware can be intimidating, so I’m going to show you how to do it in four easy steps. I’ll give you preparation tips, painting ideas (at the bottom), and curing + care instructions.

Let’s get started!

How to Paint on Glass

You can probably guess from reading this post: YES, you can paint on glass. You can paint directly onto glass using a paint made for your surface as well as one of a variety of brushes or tools. Here are the four steps you’ll go through to achieve project success:

Prepare the Surface
Tape off the Area or Pattern
Paint the Glass
Cure According to Instructions

If you’re painting the entire surface, you might not even need step 2, so this potentially could be a three-step process! Before you begin, you’ll need to gather your supplies.

Supplies You’ll Need for Glass Painting

Glassware is available in craft stores and discount stores in a wide variety of shapes and sizes (I love getting it from the Dollar Tree!). Obviously, that’s the first thing you need to get – something to paint! You’ll also need:

Rubbing alcohol or white vinegar
Glass paint – I’ll discuss it in the section below
Paintbrushes – soft-bristled
Water bin
Paint tray
Foam daubers or sponsors (optional)
Stencil tape (optional)
Stylus (optional)

Everything on the list above is pretty straightforward, but I want to discuss the brushes and paint a little bit more so you know what you’re dealing with.

Types of Brushes

There are several types of brushes and tools you can use when painting glass. They accomplish different purposes.

Soft Bristled Brushes

These are regular paint brushes, however, the bristles are softer than normal brushes. The reason for the “soft bristles” is to reduce brush strokes when you paint. Once you start painting on glass you’ll see that this particular surface tends to *really* show brush strokes. A softer brush can help with this.

If you can’t find anything that says “soft bristles”, read the package and see if it says the brushes work for glass. I’ll be honest; the more expensive brushes seem to work best and these are the ones I take great care of. I don’t buy the 24 pack of kids' brushes for glass painting. This is a time you’ll want to invest in your project.

I use these brushes to apply a basecoat of Enamel paint, or chalk paint, or add details (with smaller brushes).

Daubers

Doublers resemble sponsors, but they are a more dense foam and not as long. I LOVE daubers for applying polka dots with relatively crisp ages. They are also great for painting small areas like wine glass stems.

Stylus

Great for adding small dots! Simply dip into a “fresh” puddle of paint and touch the surface. Reload for same-sized dots. Paint descending sized dots with one load; simply continue dotting until all paint has been removed.

NOTE: Be sure when painting dots that you carefully set your tool down straight and lift it straight up. If lifted at an angle, painted dots will smear. Try this: once your tool is loaded, touch the surface, carefully twist in a circular motion, and then lift to remove. The extra twist will ensure a full even circle.

Types of Glass Paint

Enamel Paint

There is a specific type of paint you can use on glass and it will clearly say on the label. There should also be curing instructions.

When painting glassware, I typically use FolkArt Enamels; a water-based paint that is specially formulated for glass painting. It is available in craft stores and shop.plaidonline.com in many colours. When cured, it is top-shelf dishwasher safe.

Chalk Paint

I LOVE the finish that chalk paint gives glass! It’s a no-shine, smooth finish that adheres really well to the glass.

Spray Paint

There are a variety of spray paints suitable for glass, and you can get them in transparent, stone, metallic, solid, and many other types of finishes. Just make sure to read the can and spray in several light coats. You can typically paint on top with either chalk or enamel paint if you want to add to the design.

Paint Pens and Markers

There are plenty of paint pens and markers on the market; for example, Sharpie is oil-based. You’ll draw with these as you would with a regular marker, so there aren’t really any instructions here. You can also draw over other painted designs – just let the paint dry first.

NOTE: You can also paint glass with Gallery Glass and then with food colouring and Mod Podge. However, those aren’t as permanent as the other types of paint above. Learn how to Mod Podge on glass here.

Now that you’ve selected your supplies, it’s time to go through the steps of painting on glass! You’re going to start with surface preparation and go from there. Here’s how you do it.

Surface Preparation

Before you squeeze the first drop of paint or lift a brush, prepare your glass. This step is crucial if you want the paint to stick. You are removing oils from fingers – oils that repel paint. That is why you are cleaning the jars in this manner.

Thoroughly wash in warm, soapy water to remove dirt, dust, and grease film. Then rinse in warm water and let it dry. Next, dampen a paper towel with rubbing alcohol or white vinegar and wipe the stemware to ensure it is clean of any remaining soap film. Set aside for 15 minutes to air dry.

Taping Off the Area or Pattern

If you aren’t painting the entire jar one solid colour, you might want to use stencil tape to tape off an area (like a square or other shape). Other options are adhesive stencils or stencils cut with a Cricut machine. In all these situations, you’ll want to smooth your tape or stencil down thoroughly on the glass surface.

Stripes: Painting stripes are easy and create interesting backgrounds. Paint freehand stripes using your flat brush. Or you may also use stencil tape to mask an area to be striped. Apply the paint using a flat brush, dauber, or sponsor.

While wet, carefully remove the tape. Caution: do NOT allow the paint to dry with tape in place; paint may lift when the tape is removed later. Hint: if you need to clean an edge after removing the tape, scrape using your craft knife when the paint is dry.

As far as patterns, you’ll want to tape those to the inside of the glass instead of transferring them like you would on wood. Just place your pattern inside the glassware and tape it in place. If a pattern is repeated around the glass, secure several patterns. Voila, you can now see the pattern through the glass!

Painting Your Design

The way you paint your design is often determined by your brush or tool, which I’ll go over below.

Typically you’ll start with a basecoat of Enamel or chalk paint on your glass.

Chalk paint tends to show the least amount of brush strokes in my opinion. You can see what chalk paint looks like on mason jars in my post “how to paint mason jars.” It provides a really smooth finish.

Here’s the process I go through:

Dip the end of the brush into your paint. Don’t overload the brush – keep it on the bottom 1/3 to 1/2.
Start brushing on the glass. Expect to do a thin layer for your first layer. Enamel and multisurface paint will look thin when applied, but you’re going to build up layers.
Don’t keep brushing over the same areas when wet. You’ll end up removing what you just painted.
Paint in layers, letting dry between layers. It may take 3 – 4 coats to cover the glass.
Add details with smaller brushes, a stylus, or daubers. You can layer the paint but it must be dry before you do so.

Painting on glass is very similar to painting on wood, but I find that it shows more brush strokes. There is nothing that can be done to remove the brush strokes, however, if you continue to layer the paint thinly, that will help reduce them. I also find they reduce as the glass cures, especially in the oven.

A sponsor can be used to paint glass too! This helps with brush strokes (there aren’t any!). However, it does provide a different look on the glass, so I suggest giving it a try and seeing what look you like best.

Remember – quality of brushes matters. I find that higher quality brushes give higher quality results.

Other Tips

Remove any stencil or painting tape from your glass before paint dries.
Experiment with the tools. For example, you can use daubers or small spouncers to paint wine stems, sometimes more easily than a brush.

Once you’re done painting, you’re ready to cure your project!

Curing Glass Paint

ALWAYS read the bottle to get the instructions for your specific paint. Having said that, here are some general guidelines:

Drying Times: Glassware should be thoroughly dry before handling, at least 24 hours.

Curing Instructions: FolkArt Enamels should be cured prior to use; there are two recommended methods:

Air Dry Method: Air dries the project for 21 days before use.
Bake Method: Place your painted glassware in a cool oven. Set the oven temperature to 350ºF and bake for 30 minutes. Note: Glass must heat gradually with the oven to avoid breakage. After 30 minutes, turn the oven off; let the glass cool completely in the oven. The painted glass should heat up and cool down in the oven. Set aside for 72 hours.

Care Instructions: Once your painted stemware has been cured, it can be hand washed in mild soap and water or dishwasher cleaned on the top shelf.

NOTE ABOUT CHALK PAINT: it is not washable on glass and there are no curing instructions. Just don’t wash it – it’s used for decorative purposes only.

Troubleshooting

What if my paint doesn’t stick?

Make sure you have cleaned the glass with rubbing alcohol and that you are using the right kind of paint. You can always spray a clear layer of acrylic spray sealer down first before painting glass. Some kinds of glass are stubborn and this spray helps. Otherwise, get a new piece of glassware and call it a day.

How do I remove paint from glass?

Before it has cured, you can remove glass paint by washing it off in the sink. If it has dried securely to the glass, use a razor blade, craft knife, or other types of scraper to remove it. This is also how you will remove excess paint before you cure your glassware.

FolkArt Enamels Paint Important Facts

Food and beverages should not come in contact with FolkArt Enamels. When painting glasses, it is best to leave a 3/4″ top around the rim free of paint. When painting plates only paint the rim; leave the centre free of paint. An alternative is to reverse glass paint on a clear plate if the artwork is desired in the centre of the plate.
Painted items are not microwaveable.
Do not soak painted items.

These glass Christmas apothecary jars are pretty cool. I have a secret actually . . . they aren’t “true” apothecary jars – they are dollar store and recycled items married together for a beautiful, functional accent to your seasonal decor.

These jars make great Christmas table decorations as well as something to place in the entryway for guests to grab a few holiday sweets as they are coming or going. And – they’re easy to make!

DIY Apothecary Jars

Sure, you can buy apothecary jars at the craft store or Target, but I’ll be honest – they aren’t cheap. If you purchase at the craft store, be sure to use your app and a coupon.

BUT If you like saving money, I have a better way to make these Christmas candy jars. DIY them with recycled jars and candlesticks. It’s my favourite secret for making a jar display like this one.

It’s also kind of fun to use various styles of candlesticks and mason jars for somewhat of a random look. I love it for the holidays!

All you’re going to need to do for this unique Christmas craft is paint and glue some stuff. It doesn’t sound that hard, now does it? It’s not. These look a lot more complicated than they are! Learn how to make them below.

Christmas Candy Jars

Gather These Supplies

FolkArt Enamels Paint – Aqua, Calypso Sky, Forest Moss, Wicker White
FolkArt Acrylic Paint – Calypso Sky
FolkArt Extreme Glitter – Turquoise
stencil tape
foam sponsors
Craft glue
E-6000
flat brush
1 Liner brush
Assorted wood knobs/balls/wagon wheels
Glass candlesticks – Dollar Tree
Glass jars w/lids (recycled) – labels removed and jars thoroughly washed

Instructions

Apply Aqua enamels paint with spencer to your glass candlesticks. Only apply up to the decorative trim at the top of the candlestick. Set aside to dry.

Glue your assorted wood pieces together to create three distinct finials.

Paint your finials and your three lids to the glass jars with Calypso Sky acrylic paint. Let the lids dry thoroughly between coats.

Apply several coats of Turquoise Extreme Glitter Paint to lids and finials. They look pretty glittery and rich when dry . . . set aside while you paint your jars.

Wrap two rows of ¾” tape at the bottom of each jar. Remove the bottom row and wrap it above the top row. Remove tape below your topmost row and this is the area you will apply paint to. So basically, you are using the tape to help you measure 1.5″ up the jar evenly.

Apply several coats of Calypso Sky enamels paint with spencer. Remove tape before the paint dries to prevent pull up.

Each of your DIY apothecary jars is going to have a different design. On the first jar, create snowmen around with assorted spencer sizes in Wicker White.

Tape off triangle shapes on another jar using ¼” tape. Apply Wicker White and remove tape.

Create large dots around the third jar with the largest sponsor in Forest Moss.

Paint details with a liner brush and create all dots using the opposite end of a paintbrush dipped in paint.

Your jars and candlesticks can be baked using the bottle instructions (don’t bake with the lids!!) or can be air dry-cured for a longer time.

Apply E-6000 to the candlesticks and attach them to the bottom of the jars. Glue finials to jar lids with craft glue to finish.

You can put anything in your apothecary jars!

Looking for a new, creative craft? You may want to try glass painting. Much simpler than stained glass, glass painting creates an equally beautiful piece of artwork. It can look fairly similar to stained glass yet it has its own original style. It’s an excellent craft for people of all ages and can be as challenging or as simple as you like. The process that I’m going to be demonstrating is a two-day process, including the drying time. Depending on what you are going to be doing it can take anywhere from ten minutes to five hours each day.

Step 2: Chose Your Pattern

Choosing your pattern is a crucial part of doing this craft and will define what your final product will look like. It may involve drawing your own pattern if you’re artistic. Or if you're not very confident in your own drawing skills there are books full of stained glass patterns you can get, and of course, there’s always the Internet.

For my paintings, I’m going to be using some dragon pictures that I've printed off from the Internet.

Step 3: Choosing Your Glass

There are a wide variety of options that you can use for your glass. You can use a simple flat sheet, a wine bottle, a windowpane, a glass pan, etc. You can also get glass in numerous different colours and textures.

For my project, I'm actually going to paint it on a piece of Cling Wrap and later peel it off and glue it onto one of my windows.

Step 4: Draw Your Outline

This stage requires several different steps. You will need your pattern, glass/Cling Wrap, and glass liquid leading for it.

4.1. First you slide your pattern underneath the glass sheet. (Or if you're feeling more ambitious you can freehand it)

4.2. Then take the cap off of your liquid leading and squeeze out a little bit to make sure that there are no clogs.

4.3. Use the liquid leading to trace the outline of your pattern.

4.4. Then place the sheet of glass somewhere safe and let it dry for at least twelve hours.

Note: if you smear the leading accidentally it can be easily removed with a paper towel or napkin granted that you catch it before it starts to dry.

For my project, I'm making several small drawings on Cling Wrap and will later combine them into a picture.

Step 5: Choosing Your Colors

This is an important step because it will decide the final colour of your picture. Glass paint comes in a wide variety of colours and shades. Everything from prime colours to clear paint that matches your glass to sparkly and cloudy colours.

You will also want to make sure that the colour you choose is actually the right colour. The colours look much different when in the bottle than on glass. You may want to make a palette of the colours you're going to use to make sure that they're the right shade. Just dry a little dot of each colour on a piece of glass to use as a reference.

Step 6: Filling in the Picture

This is probably the funniest stage of the process. You can really use your creativity. It will require the use of your glass paints and toothpicks.

6.1. Take out the now dried outline.

6.2. Bring out your colours.

6.3. Squeeze your colours into the appropriate spots using the outline like the lines on a colouring page.

6.4. Spread it around using the toothpicks. (Small bubbles may form in the paint and you can use the dry end of a toothpick to pop them.)

6.5. When you have finished filling in everything leave it to dry for another twelve hours.

Note: Make sure to fill in everything on the piece of glass even if it’s just with clear paint. That way everything will be at the same level.

If you’re feeling ambitious you can experiment with mixing and swirling various colours. It can produce some beautiful results.

Step 7: Combining Your Work (Optional)

This step is optional depending on what you have chosen to do. For my project, I'm going to combine three of the dragons that I drew into another drawing. Note that this can only be done if you do your work on Cling Wrap because then you can peel the paintings off.

7.1. First peel your pictures off of the Cling Wrap.

7.2. Arrange them like you want on a clean sheet of Cling Wrap or on a piece of glass.

7.3. Use your liquid leading to connect your pictures. (make sure to overlap it with the pictures you already drew so that they will stick together)

7.3. If you want to you can fill in the new outline after it has dried with your glass paints.

In my painting I am drawing a whole new picture around my work, however, there are endless options to what you can do so feel free to be creative.

Step 8: Hanging Your Work With Suction Cups

After you have finished all of the painting and let it dry completely you may wish to hang up your artwork. There are multiple ways for you to do this. If you drew your painting on a sheet of glass there is an easy way to do it using suction cups.

8.1. Put a dot of glass glue on each corner of your glass.

8.2. Stick on your suction cups and let them dry for the allotted amount of time.

8.3. Press your picture onto a window.

8.4. Enjoy the view!

Note: If you use suction cups you may want to paint the corners of your picture a darker colour otherwise you'll be able to see them through the glass.

Step 9: Glueing Your Work

If you did your painting on a piece of Cling Wrap there are a couple of different options for hanging it. First, you can glue your painting onto a sheet of glass using good glass glue and then hang it with suction cups as seen in step 8. You can also glue it straight onto your window. There are a couple of steps to do this.

9.1. First clean your window thoroughly so that the light can shine through to its greatest effect.

9.2. Peal your painting off of the Cling Wrap.

9.3. Spread a thin layer of glass glue over the back of your painting.

9.4. Press it onto the correct place in your window and let it dry.

Note: If you can it might be easier to take out your window and glue your painting on it when it's flat so that it doesn't slide at all.

Step 10: Admire Your Work

Now that you have finally finished you can step back and admire what you've created. With the sunlight shining through them glass paintings can be quite stunning.

As you can see from all of the images glass painting is an original and beautiful craft. It isn’t overly difficult, the main steps being drawing the outline and filling it in, and granted that you have a little bit of patience it can produce some beautiful results. It is an excellent way to show off your creativity and create a unique decoration for your home.
