Once you are connected to your server you will be able to upload Content Management Software like WordPress, Drupal, and others or you can simply load HTML files created using an application like Dreamweaver. If this all sounds foreign to you there’s no need to worry. The aim of this series is to help you become familiar with your hosting account, the web, and all webmaster related topics. Copy Domain Information

1. Click on Domains in Administration.

2. Take note of the domain information you wish to connect to.

Note: When you use 1and1, the default domain is usually s#####.onlinehome.com, but if you’ve set other domains to connect to the root directory of your server or another location you can use those as well. On this guide I will be using the domain assigned by 1and1.

Connect to Sever Using FTP Client and Create Site Folder

Download and install FileZilla.

1. Open FileZilla (or your FTP client of choice) and enter your credentials in the Quickconnect bar.

2. Click Quickconnect to begin the connection.

A. Once you are connected to the server, browse to the location where you wish to host your site (make sure you are on the Remote site pane). I usually create a folder for each site at the root level this way I can see at-a-glance what’s running on a particular server.

3. Right click on the blank space to open the menu.

4. Click Create directory from the list.

5. When the Create directory dialog box opens, enter a name the for the directory.

6. Click OK to save the changes.

You are one step closer to hosting your own website. If you’re planning on running a WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal installation make sure to setup the MySQL database before proceeding.

Setup MySQL Database in 1&1 Hosting

The guide below assumes that you already have a hosting package and have administrative privileges.

1. After you sign-in to the 1&1 Control Panel, click on the Administration tab.

2. Scroll down the page until you see the Web Space & Access section.

3. Click on MySQL Administration.

4. A listing of all the MySQL database should appear. If you don’t have any databases this section will be blank. Click on the New Database button.

Please note the following:

• It is not recommended that MySQL databases be used for log evaluation operations, ad clicks, chat systems, banner rotations, or similar applications. This will create a load on the server which will greatly inhibit the ability for backups of your data to be created as well as possibly cripple your server.
• Your MySQL databases are stored behind a firewall to protect your data. You can only access each one exclusively through your server. Direct access to your MySQL databases using a home PC (external ODBC connection) cannot be established.
• For Managed Server packages, there is no quota on storage space. This means that the storage space available for your MySQL database depends on the size of your hard disk space.

The Admin function gives you unrestricted access to your MySQL databases. Any changes made using this interface cannot be rolled back. Deleting entries in forum (ex. phpBB), guest book or similar applications should only be made using the administrative functions of the particular application.

Databases created will run MySQL version 5, version 4 is no longer supported.

5. Enter a description and passwords for the new database. Make sure to include the website/application the database will be used for. Also make sure to use a complex password to protect the database.

6. When you are ready, click on Set Up to begin the setup process.

A. Write down or copy the database information in a safe place.

7. Click on Overview to see the status of the database. Databases usually take a couple of minutes to be ready.

Once the database is in the Ready status you will be able to use it with the script that requires it.

Note: A Linksys Wireless DSL Gateway and a WRT54G was used for this guide, but the instructions should be similar with other Linksys products.

Warning – Resetting the router to factory defaults will delete all of your router’s configuration settings including login information that may be necessary to access the internet.

Restore Router to Factory Defaults

1. Go to your router and using a point of a paper-clip or pen press and hold down the reset button for 30 seconds. You will notice that the routers lights will flash and it will re-initialize.

Connect to Router and Change Password

Once the router’s factory settings have been restored you will need to access your router’s administration panel to set your own password and this time we’ll write it down.

1. Open your browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, hit Enter/Go.

2. When prompted enter the following for the user name and password:

User name – admin

password – (leave blank)

3. Click OK to sign-in.

Note: If it does not work make sure that the password field was left blank and that the user name is admin (case-sensitive). If it still doesn’t work you probably did not reset the router correctly, make sure to try and reset the router again.

4. Once you are signed in to the router’s administration panel, click on Administration.

5. Make sure that you are in Management and enter the user name and password that you wish to use.

6. Write it down.

7. Click Save Changes.

1. Click on the Search box and enter the word(s) you are searching.

A. You will notice that instead of displaying a list of search results, Acrobat will automatically highlight the words as they are found.

2. Use the Find Previous and Find Next arrow buttons to navigate through the search results on the page.

3. If you wish to view the search results in a list click on the small arrow next to the search box to open the menu.

4. Click on Open Full Acrobat Search from the list.

You will notice that a separate Search window will open.

When you turn off Ping all of your activity and profile information will be removed immediately and permanently deleted after seven days. I guess they are giving users a turn-off-ping remorse period, just keep that in mind. However the reviews you have posted will remain active under your profile name unless you remove them in the Manage Reviews section of your account.

1. When iTunes loads open the iTunes Store.

2. Click on the small arrow next to your iTunes profile to open the menu.

3. Click on Account from the list.

Note: You may required to sign-in to your iTunes Account.

4. When the Apple Account Information page opens, click on the Turn Off button in the Ping section to turn off Ping.

5. Are you sure you want to turn off Ping? Click Turn Off to proceed.

A. Confirm that Ping is turned Off.

6. Click Done when you are finished.

You have successfully deleted your Ping account.

Find PDF Files Using Google Search

1. Enter the search terms (highlighted yellow) followed by filetype:pdf.

2. Click Search.

A. You will notice that the search results title will be preceded by [PDF] indicating that the link leads you to a PDF file.

B. If you want to preview the PDF before downloading, click on the Quick View link (when available).

The preview will open in a separate browser window using the Google Docs viewer.

1. Click on File to open the menu.

2. Click on Save & Send.

3. Click on Create PDF/XPS Document under File Types.

4. Click on the Create PDF/XPS button on the right pane.

5. When the Publish as PDF or XPS window opens you will have several options.

A. You can name the PDF in the File Name text box.

B. Make sure that *.PDF is the selected Save as type format.

C. You will have the option to preview the file once it has been converted from doc to PDF. You will also have the option of optimizing the PDF conversion for the online and printing or just for online.

D. Click on the Options button for additional PDF file options.

6. When you are ready to start the file conversion click on the Publish button.

The Options window allows you to specify the range of pages that are converted to PDF, the information included in the final PDF file and the ability to encrypt the file.

When conversion from doc to PDF is complete you will find the PDF file in the location you designated.

3. You will be asked to enter your iTunes sign-in information.

5. Check that you agree with the Terms and Conditions.

6. Click Continue to proceed.

7. Enter your information (Name, Location, Picture, About Me, and Music interests).

A. When you click on Add Photo a small window will open that will allow you to customize the photo you choose to use.

9. Select one of the Privacy Settings.

Allow people to follow me – Your profile information and activity (including purchases) will be visible to everyone, and anyone can follow you. You can check Require my approval to follow me if you wish.

Don’t allow people to follow me – You can follow others, but no one can follow you. Your name and photo will appear for some actions, such as writing reviews or adding comments.

10. Click Done to continue.

11. Choose the music you would like to be displayed in your profile (Music you like). You can have iTunes automatically display the music you like, rate, review or purchase, you can set it to manual (by you) or you can choose not to display any information at all.

You can start following your favorite artists or friends by clicking on the Follow button.
