GFEST 2017 and MAGNUM Ice Cream, the brand synonymous with pleasure and renowned globally for its luxurious ice creams, have partnered to reward the excellence that exists in the LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex) artistic and creative community.

The winners will be announced at the launch of the 10^th anniversary celebrations of GFEST - Gaywise FESTival, which kicks off a fortnight long (Monday 13 to Saturday 25 November) showcase of eclectic art, films and performances by LGBTQI artists. Categories include:

Ø GFEST 2017 Magnum Performance Award (to be announced on 25 November at GFEST 2017 finale performance event)

Each category winner or winners will receive £850 cash prize.

GFEST artistic director Niranjan Kamatkar said, “We are delighted to offer these awards for the first time in the history of GFEST, and also a coincidence that, this honour further celebrates the 10^th anniversary of the festival this year.”

“Arts Protest”: 10^th anniversary GFEST showcases new art and films by new and previous GFEST artists. Films line-up includes London/ UK premieres and a revisit to some films from the previous years.

An annual November event for LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex) artists and organisations, the 10^th anniversary celebrations of GFEST - Gaywise FESTival ® will run from Monday 13 to Saturday 25 November 2017 at venues across London.

“When we started GFEST in 2007, it was a different time, stories were told in a slightly different way. Today we are telling stories with advantage of social media and technologies. We have stepped forward in winning legal battles and recognition. But the battle continues for gaining full and equal social acceptance. It is about who we are and who we love. We are still telling these diverse LGBTQI ‘protest’ stories in many new ways. The narratives have moved on but what has been constant is people are excited by these stories which stretch imaginations and help shape the creative lives of future generations.” says GFEST artistic director Niranjan Kamatkar. “Despite many changes on the political and social scene and huge fundraising challenges, we are still determined to excel once again, telling stories of protests that are part of LGBTQI equality struggle. This year’s GFEST is there to celebrate the heart-warming, moving, quirky and unique tales by LGBTQI artists and audiences. And we are so looking forward to GFEST 2017 launch event on Tuesday 14 November at Menier Gallery.”

FILMS: ‘Fighting for LGBTQI rights’ on various fronts!

An extraordinary film line-up includes recently completed LGBTQI works and numerous UK and London premieres: feature films include Fire Song, an award winning, coming-of-age story of a Canadian First Nation gay Anishinaabe teenager, If You Dare Desire, a drama about two Bengali lesbians and I'm Not Sick! I'm Gay telling a story of LGBTQI struggles in Kazakhstan. Short films line-up include a number of UK films: Ballroom Boys, Lily, Mai, Dusk, Shadow Plant, Lightrapping, Segun Mateo and a north London based filmmaker’s Finding Home. The film events will take place at Rich Mix cinema in Shoreditch and Arthouse Crouch End cinema from 20 to 24 November and will include filmmakers Q&As.

PERFORMANCES: ‘Singing Loud & Proud’

A delightful evening filled with music and fun! Performers include award-winning divas: Rosie Wilby waxing lyrical about relationship challenges, Short & Girly Show present all-female troupe performing improvised comedy sketches and songs. Be there to be enthralled by The Symphonic Winds’ awesome music and The Gay Men's Dance Company's latest energetic numbers. GFEST 2017 performances evening will be at St Pancras (new) Parish Church in Euston on Saturday 25 November.

This is a fundraiser event for GFEST 2018 to ensure that GFEST becomes an even stronger platform for LGBTQI artists.

VISUAL ARTS: ‘Arts Protest’ - LGBTQI identities and articulation.

A series of challenging and insightful works will be exhibited at Menier Gallery, (Upper Gallery), from 13 November to 18 November. This year’s line-up of artists include: Alice Boland-Rhodes, Gökhan Tanrıöver, Heather Carol, Mike Bliss, Jason Carr, Marta Kochanek, Peter A Leigh, Reggie Blennerhassett, Sarah Jane Moon and Simon Croft. Past GFEST artists, performers and filmmakers over the last 10 years will present a “Wall of Protest” - selfies or portraits of some participants from the year 2007 onwards, curated by GFEST artistic director Niranjan Kamatkar. Free entry.

Reggie Blennerhassett will lead the discussion when LGBT activists joined the miners’ 1984-5 strike: the real story behind the film “Pride” and the impact of “Arts Protest” to deliver social change. This debate on Saturday 18 November at the Menier Gallery will also explore how the work presented at the exhibition challenges preconceived notions.

London’s annual LGBTQI cross-art and cultural event in November GFEST – Gaywise FESTival started on 7 November this year. There was a big visual arts exhibition ‘arty-party’ at Menier Gallery near London Bridge on Tuesday 8 November. A number of eminent people from arts and culture world of London attended and enjoyed the exhibition, which remains open to public until 12 November. The exhibition has already been seen by hundreds of people and the works of well known LGBTQI artists and fresh talent is showcased. Headlining the free entry visual arts events are Ajamu X and Khalil West, Jason Carr, Jose Gomez, Niranjan Kamatkar, Sarah Jane Moon, Simon Croft and Veronica Slater.

GFEST 2016 artistic director Niranjan Kamatkar spoke at the exhibition, outlining the long term relationship that the festival enjoys in its 9^th year with artistic and LGBTQ communities.
GFEST is organised by arts charity Wise Thoughts and one of the trustees, Dr Rainer Schulze spoke passionately about GFEST 2016 films line-up that begins from Saturday 12 November. The film programme opens with feature drama Jonathan at Rich Mix in Shoreditch this weekend. The festival will showcase recently completed LGBT feature films and some UK and London premieres such as Brothers of the Night at Arthouse Crouch End on Monday 14 November, Gender Troubles on 14 November and The Pearl on 15 November at Rich Mix. The short films night at Arthouse on Thursday 17 November include some of the best UK LGBTQI short films made or exhibited in 2016: Denise, Open Plan, Dawn and Away with Me.
A special African LGBT cinema evening with 2 screenings will be at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham on 13 November with community group Q&A.

GFEST 2016 performances evening details were outlined by Subodh Rathod, who has been one of the organisers from the beginning of the festival in 2007.
‘Marginal Play’– a double-bill evening full of LGBTQI music and dance will be on at RADA Studio in Chenies Street on Saturday 19 November.
The evening will start with composer Benjamin Tassie performing his music set for acoustic instruments and electronics. He has also developed a new music piece for an original dance work ‘Marg – a pathway’ which will conclude the double bill. Specially commissioned for GFEST 2016, this dance work offers two narratives from the Indian epic Mahabharata, exploring the ageless nature of gender fluidity and sexual diversity. The dance work, choreographed by Subodh Rathod, is presented in collaboration with the University of Roehampton dance and music departments.

GFEST presents South Asian LGBT identities at Southbank Centre’s Alchemy 2016

See ‘Towards Marg’, an exhibition exploring South Asian LGBT identities in political and cultural scenes.

‘Towards Marg’ features the photographic and image work of four artists: Charan Singh, Raisa Kabir, Sushil Mangaonkar and Balbir Krishan. ‘Marg’ is Sanskrit for pathway, and the exhibition looks at the various journeys South Asian LGBT people take through life.

The dates for the mini-series exhibition are from Wednesday the 18th May to Monday 30th May 2016. It will be open for Alchemy 2016 visitors from 10am – 11pm on Level 2 Foyer (Blue Side) at Royal Festival Hall at the Southbank Centre.

Wise Thoughts artistic director Niranjan Kamatkar, who presents the exhibition ‘Towards Marg’ said, “I am excited to highlight the work as part of Alchemy 2016 at the Southbank Centre, which also marks IDAHOT (International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia) on 17th May. It is about time that we encourage greater visibility and platform the artistic excellence within South Asian LGBT identities.”

Alchemy, Southbank Centre’s annual festival celebrating the cultural connections between South Asia and the UK. Now in its seventh year, Alchemy is also the largest South Asian festival outside of the subcontinent.

Wise Thoughts is a London-based arts charity dedicated to creating and showcasing LGBTQI arts and culture. Established in 1999, they work on projects involving LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) and BAME (Black, Asian Minority Ethnic) artists, filmmakers and practitioners. They also organise multidisciplinary art events such as GFEST- Gaywise FESTival, London’s annual LGBT cross-art festival, held in November.

The 8^th GFEST – Gaywise FESTival ® came to a close this weekend after a successful two week run. The festival enjoyed a good turnout for its week-long visual art exhibition ASIAN FUTURE, challenging perceptions of Asian LGBTQI identities at London’s Menier Gallery. This was matched by a good turnout for GFEST’s TONAL FUTURE evening dedicated to gay composers past and present, with their compositions performed in St Pancras Parish Church by LGBT musicians. The corresponding panel discussions were also successful and well attended.
GFEST’s CINEMA FUTURA film screenings at ArtHouse Crouch End was sold out. GFEST’s special LGBT tour of Tate Modern, led by artist Michael Petry, was another successful, sold out event.
Niranjan Kamatkar, artistic director of GFEST commented: “We got a fabulous response from both the artists and audiences, saying that they thoroughly enjoyed participating in the events. It was all due to high quality artistic contributions, not only by the artists but also by the guest curators and programme advisors.”
Festival organisers and artists took the opportunity of GFEST to make several important statements. On the eve of Diwali, India’s festival of light, an appeal was made to British Prime Minister David Cameron. In a letter to the PM, GFEST’s Subodh Rathod urged David Cameron to discuss LGBT rights in India with the Indian PM, whose visit to Britain coincided with Diwali and with GFEST’s ASIAN FUTURE visual art exhibition. With GFEST’s TONAL FUTURE music concert taking place exactly one week from the horrific events of Paris, and with extremists in the Middle East killing LGBT people and destroying art, GFEST took a moment during the concert to show solidarity with the people of Paris and with LGBT people in Syria and beyond.
With this year’s festival, GFEST challenged its audiences to question and not blindly accept the status quo, with the theme: (Complacent Present)… Fragile Future? It turned out to be an especially pertinent, timely theme that highlighted a promising future for the LGBTQI artistic community.
GFEST will return next year – 2016 dates to be announced.

This year’s GFEST concludes with an evening of classical music in the hollowed environs of St Pancras Parish Church, with its wonderful natural acoustics (20 November, £7 / £5 concessions). Entitled TONAL FUTURE, the evening aims to raise funds for, and awareness of, the ‘relatively silent’ world of gay composers and gay music. Having worked with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the National Orchestras of Lebanon and Malta, and having directed Oxford’s University Church mixed-voice choir for 10 years, Gulliver Ralston will present a solo piano recital featuring works of Francis Poulenc. Liam Byrne plays the viola da gamba, a historical hybrid of guitar and cello. He will play forgotten gems of baroque music by Marin Marais and Sainte Colombe alongside newly commissioned works by living composers including Nico Muhly. The Korros Ensemble is a dynamic trio with an international reputation for their unique and distinguished performances. Comprising flute, clarinet and harp, they create a rarely heard soundworld of unusual and beautiful textures. They’ll present compositions of Benjamin Britten and Manuel de Falla. Having worked as an accompanist with Opera Ireland, NI Opera and Ulster Orchestra, counter tenor Miles Lallemant will present a short recital accompanied by Duncan Day on piano. BOOK

Capoeira: Brazilian Martial Arts

New taster classes using martial arts that combines self-defense, dance and music. Led by Tony Alves, the sessions aim to improve balance, wellbeing and fitness.

Movers & Shakers FREE Summer 2015 Fitness

A short introductory course in Medi -Yoga and Indian Dance. The course facilitators Farah Fernandes and Subodh Rathod will lead participant through a series of exercises designed to support and improve health. Sessions help to tackle conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Participants are encouraged to complete all 5 sessions of yoga and / or dance in order to improve circulation and flexibility.

AND Fun way to keep fit with Capoeira: Brazilian martial art

Capoeira (pronounced cap-wearer) is a Brazilian martial art form, combining self-defense, acrobatics, dance, music and song. It was developed by slaves who used it to disguise the fact that they were practicing fight moves. Only the hands and feet touch the floor.
Tony Alves, born in Brazil, is an experienced Capoeira teacher who has
worked and taught in Brazil , Portugal , Spain , Belgium, France, Dubai and the UK. He will run 4 taster sessions in September 2015 on Fridays in Wood Green Library. Open to all and beginners!

GFEST – Gaywise FESTival has announced the 2015 call for entries open to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) artists on its website: http://www.gaywisefestival.org.uk
The festival accepts expression of interests from filmmakers, artists and performers in 3 main categories : Films (shorts and features), Visual Arts and Performances.

NIRANJAN KAMATKAR, director of GFEST said, “This year we will work with venues that will actively promote the profile of LGBTQI artists. The festival has been offering an excellent platform for LGBT films and artworks over the last 8 years now. GFEST 2015 presents an ideal opportunity for sponsors to show their commitment to LGBT equality and diversity.”
Recognised as London’s annual gay art fest in November, GFEST in the past was supported by a number of London venues including the National Gallery, V&A and was launched in UK Parliament for over 3 years.

The festival provides a unique opportunity for young talent to network and showcase works alongside the established names. An eclectic line up featuring new commissioned works presented along with curated LGBTQI art and films.

London’s LGBT cross-art annual event GFEST 2014 will showcase new visual and performance art works and films from Monday the 10th to Saturday the 22nd November.
Breathtaking works that explore this year’s festival theme ‘Myths & Mythology’ include thought provoking feature and short films, paintings, video installation and photographic works along with cabaret acts as well as South Asian dance works.

Headliners include: the critically acclaimed ‘STAND’ – a Russian feature film directed by Jonathan Taieb, while British filmmakers Jake Graf and Richard Mansfield to present ‘Brace’ a queer short film, and the feature ‘The Secret Path’ respectively. Daniel Ribeiro’s gay teen drama ‘The Way He Looks’ along with Erin Davies’ ‘Fagbug Nation’ a popular follow up to the original ‘Fagbug’ are to be screened. Filmmakers Casper Andreas and David Färdmar whose films have been a part of previous GFESTs screenings, will premier a short film ‘A Last Farewell’.

GFEST 2014 filmmakers and the stars are expected to participate in the Q&A sessions, after each film screening, at Rich Mix in East London from 15 to 18 November.

Quoted as being ‘Queer Pearly Queen’ and ‘Haute Couture Fishwife’ Bird la Bird will present a cabaret evening line up that includes 2011 BOYZ award winner for best cabaret act Mzz Kimberley and multi-award winning sensational act Sh!t Theatre at Rich Mix on the 15 November night.

New Commissions, New Direction:

British Asian dancer Kali Chandrasegaram will present a new performance work ‘S(He)-dom’ while Justin McCarthy, an established ‘Indian’ Bharatanatyam dance guru from the prestigious Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra will complete the double bill with his new work on myths, ‘Mohini: God Becomes Enchantress’. The dance event will take place on the evening of Thursday the 20 November at RADA studio. A debate on gay identity and practice within the conventional South Asian dance sphere is planned at Roehampton University with both the dancers and other panel members.

New works are also the key feature at GFEST 2014 visual art exhibition that will run from 10 to 22 November at Menier Gallery near Tower Bridge. Challenging art works from established artists like Sadie Lee and Matthew Stradling will lead the showcase. Enzo Marra will show his Francis Bacon series along with art works of Berlin and London based artist Mathias Vef and Joao Trindade’s promising new digital images. The exhibition will also include ‘mythical’ interpretations from younger artists like Gökhan Tanriöver and Jenny Welton.

Unique and Free entry debates and panel discussions will take place as a part of GFEST 2014 programme.

Not-to-be-missed screenings in November: GFEST 2014 feature films and shorts at Rich Mix in Shoreditch.
Organised by art charity Wise Thoughts each year, London’s eclectic cross-art festival ‘GFEST 2014’ film screenings will include this autumn’s best selection of LGBTQI flicks. The film programme is billed as ‘Modern Myths’ under this year’s festival theme ‘Myths & Mythology’. The screenings will take place from 15th to 18th November 2014 and include thought provoking as well as entertaining movies. Haringey (North London) based charity Wise Thoughts, organiser of GFEST – Gaywise FESTival, have added more events to the Creative Cultural Hub – an initiative designed to reduce isolation, motivate people to be creative and promote LGBT issues within Haringey.

The events are either free or very low cost – so there’s every reason to come along and try something new!
Events include

Mindful Relaxation – learning about relaxation techniques, reducing stress, anxiety.
Kathak Dance – open to all and LGBT friendly – Class for beginners in Indian classical dance.
Exotic Moves for the Over 50s – (LGBT friendly) open to all. Unique combination of Indian Dance and Yoga.
gayWISE Drop-In - meet LGBT people and try something new.
Positive Rainbow for HIV+ Men – offers a safe, secure and confidential drop-in space for HIV+ gay/bi men.
Self Portrait Art Workshop – open to all (LGBT friendly) – use charcoals and pencils and express yourself.

Art and Dance classes as part of Wise Thoughts ‘Creative Cultural Hub’ CCH at Wood Green Library

The second round of exciting arts and creative classes will be run by arts charity Wise Thoughts as a part of its Creative Cultural Hub – CCH initiative in Wood Green Central Library in Haringey. The workshops and classes are led by experienced and enthusiastic workshop facilitators.

Accomplished performer Subodh Rathod will run ‘introduction to South Asian dance form of Kathak, entitled ‘Ang’ – using rhythm as a base to choreograph a gamut of movements and narratives. These classes will take place from Monday 20 January 2014 to Thursday 6 February 2014.

Artist Jason C Woodson will present ‘Identity’ – visual art workshops using the ‘Exquisite corpse’ (digital collage) as a guiding concept. Participants will create their own personal exquisite corpse using elements that they choose to represent themselves into a cohesive piece. The classes will run from Friday 24 January 2014 to Sunday 16 February 2014.

Established artist Matthew W Stradling will run workshops entitled ‘Room to Grow’ in which he will explore ideas of identity and gender through some playful and exciting creative exercises. He will facilitate the sessions from Tuesday 21 January to Wednesday 5 February.

The above artists will run artists lab sessions specifically targeted at local artists in order to form a creative network and develop showcase activities in North London.

Niranjan Kamatkar, artistic director of Wise Thoughts said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for diverse members of the public in North London, artists and Haringey residents to gain skills and be part of sharing or showcase in February 2014, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) History Month.”

The workshops are suitable for people aged 12 and above.

Lynne Featherstone MP has sent a message of support to GFEST – Gaywise FESTival. GFEST which is recognised as ‘London’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) cross- art festival for all’ is less than two weeks away. All the festival events this year will take place at Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham, London from 7 to 9 November.

Organised by arts charity Wise Thoughts, GFEST 2013 programme includes diverse films, sensational music performances, art exhibition, workshops and a Bollywood theme party. The Lib-Dem MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, Ms Featherstone is a key political figure behind the successful passage of gay marriage bill (same-sex marriage bill) in the UK parliament.

A North London based arts Charity Wise Thoughts organises and delivers the LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex) cross-art annual November event GFEST – Gaywise FESTival.

A Sensational line up will present hip-hop, R&B/Soul and rap numbers as part of GFEST – Gaywise FESTival 2013 music performances. GFEST is recognised as London’s LGBT cross art festival for all.

This year the festival has a broader theme: ‘Art Riots – positive contributions by diverse artists in the community’. The festival will take place in a Tottenham venue Bernie Grant Arts Centre. GFEST 2013 performances are on 9 November.

Noisy Bytes: GFEST 2013 star performers include Dean Atta, a performance poet who is well known on the London’s poetry scene, and EvOn Musicbully, a hip hop artist who has enjoyed a successful performing and recording career. Other artists on the bill include QBoy, a pioneer of “homo-hop” and Naechane Valentino, an award winning hip-hop artist who has made two albums in an inspirational and blossoming career.

Mayor of UK's capital city Boris Johnson says in his message of support to GFEST : ‘The GFEST — Gaywise FESTival encourages cultural change by challenging misconceptions about the LGBT community, raises awareness about social issues, promotes greater understanding, and inspires creativity.’

GFEST – Gaywise FESTival is recognised as London’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) cross-art festival for all. The 2013 festival programme has been announced on GFEST website: http://gaywisefestival.org.uk

GFEST – Gaywise FESTival is one of the first LGBT arts events that was launched in the UK Parliament in 2008 with the support of David Lammy MP. The festival had attracted cross party support including from the Prime Minister, former arts and culture ministers and MPs.

The Mayor of London mentioned that the festival offers ‘the interpretation of the global LGBT movement’ presented by the artists.
