Hope the light of this Diwali drives away the darkness and lull that was spread by the economic slowdown last year. Hope everyone makes good decisions and books profits...

Now, coming back to Getbhavcopy, I would like to remind everyone in case you need to download Muhurat trading data (which can fall on weekends) you can do so by unchecking the ignore weekends checkbox for today. Remember to check it back again and save the settings once you are done.

Getbhavcopy version 2.0.6 released

I know this has been pending for a long time from my end. Thanks to the Maharashtra Assembly elections and the holiday as a result of it, I got some well deserved time to work on this new release.

This version contains the following fixes:

1. BSE Indices data download fixed : Technically this was not a bug in Getbhavcopy, however the change at BSE end caused things to break in almost all free data downloaders available. I think Getbhavcopy is the first free NSE and BSE data downloader to provide the fix (not verified). The change at BSE end was that it suddenly changed the sort order of the indices data serach page from ascending to descending.

As a result whenever someone downloads historical BSE data (even two days back is historical), they see the same BSE data repeating for all the dates. This happens because Getbhavcopy will always get today's data for all these historial days from BSE (due to the change in sort order at BSE end). It was not an easy fix but finally after some days of work I was able to get it working. Those who use Getbhavcopy everyday to download the data will not face this issue (so try to be regular with your downloads )

Important :

The install instructions for version 2.0.6 are a bit different then all the previous releases. As usual copy the Getbhavcopy.exe and Getbhavcopy.exe.config from the zip file to the existing directory overwriting the existing files. However, this time you need to start Getbhavcopy, go to the Options tab and then set the BSE Indices data download order to 'Descending'. It is extremely important to save the options or else you will keep facing the same issue.

With that done..you are all set to use the new version. I have done a bit less testing this time (to provide a quicker release) so please let me know in case you notice any issues.

2. NIFTY MIDCAP 50 support added : This version will also download indices data for the new NSE index that was created recently.

Short & Medium term picks in Forums

I have created two new categories for the community members to post theri short and medium term picks in the forums section to help other investors benefit from your analysis.

I also request you to please provide a short description of how you arrived at that target for the pick, be it based on some news or fundamentals or technical analysis.

The short term picks are for targets that are achievable within 15 days to 1 month. The medium term section is for the targets achievable in a period of 2 to 6 months from the date of posting.

Moving back to Mumbai....

While most of the blogs on this site deal with Getbhavcopy, this one does not (directly). However indirectly it does. As you may have seen, for the past few days I am not having enough time to spend over the site. I have also not been able to work on the fix for BSE indices issue.

Well for those who are not following me on Twitter, I would like to inform you that i am moving back to Mumbai from California with my family. As a result I am a lot busy with the last minute office work and planning the move back and all the packing.

So well this is going to be a short post. Hope to release 2.0.6 once i reach Mumbai and settle down. Hope you can bear with me for some time.

Keeping yourself updated.....

It seems this quiet site is suddenly experiencing a lot of attention and activity; thankfully for good reasons rather than something being broken in Getbhavcopy.

Lot of enthusiatic users are posting their analysis and tips in the 'Analysis, Strategis and Tips' section of the forums. Now if you are an experienced technical analyst or some one who is learning TA, reading someone's analysis, and the ensuing discussion on the topic, always helps in making more informed decisions. After all two minds are always better then one and as i have experienced they seldomly think the same way.

While you must be using Getbhavcoopy each day to download the EOD data, I believe most of you do not visit the forums that frequently. This could have been because earlier there was not much activity here, and was mostly used to get support in case of issues with Getbhavcopy. However that is not the case now.

So now the need arises to provide a facility whereby the users can request to get notified periodically about any new Forum activity or a Blog post.

Hence, I have created RSS feeds for the Getbhavcopy Forum as well as Getbhavcopy Blog activities.

There are two ways by which you can keep track of the activity on Getbhavcopy.com.

Subscribe in reader
Get email notifications

If you are already subscribed to RSS Feeds you would know what an RSS reader is. In case it is new to you then take a quick tour of Google Reader: A free RSS feed reader. In case you do not want to go the RSS reader approach you can also get daily email notification about the activity. You can subscribe to either reader or email option or both.

Both subscribtion links are available in the Sidebar to the right under the 'Recent Forum Posts' and 'Recent Blog Entries' categories. Did you notice these two new links?

Note: These are two different activity feeds, Forum feed and Blog feed and the subscribtion links are under the corresponding category.

Blog feed will get updated only when there is a new blog post. Forum feed gets updated every 6 hours. They are seperate feeds so you need to subscribe to both using either the reader or email option.

Getbhavcopy version 2.0.5 released

This one is a quick fix to let Getbhavcopy users know that there was an error downloading NSE indices data.

As we have seen recently, NSE Indices data does not get downloaded and Getbhavcopy does not report any error. Since the issue is at NSE end (i.e. no indices data generated) Getbhavcopy cannot do much as the data is not availabe for it to download, but it should atleast notify the users that there was an issue.

Now with this version in case Getbhavcopy has any issue downloading NSE Indices data it will display and error message as follows

Getbhavcopy version 2.0.4 released

A new version of Getbhavcopy has been released to fix the following issues:

Till version 2.0.3 Getbhavcopy used to send a post to NSE to generate the CSV file for the index and then downloaded that csv file with index data. Recently I was noticing a lot of 404 Not Found errors being returned from NSE server randomly while downloading the NSE Indices data file.

Version 2.0.4 changes the approach in the way it downloads the Indices data. The indices data is downloaded from NSE itself but now does not depend on the CSV file, this way we will not notice the random 404 Not found errors

The following is the error I am talking about, notice the random 404 errors below. These are now fixed

The other issue fixed is with the NSE Indices volume calculation. This issue does not effect those who download data every day. However if you are used to download bulk data (i.e. for a range of dates) in one shot then you would face this issue. The issue is that the NSE indices volume is incorrectly calculated and the volume keeps on adding for each day. Hence you will have a volume pattern as follows.

Notice how the volume keeps on rising till one day and then it drops. Those are the range of dates for which I downloaded data (i.e. start dates and end dates while downloading).

All other data is perfect just the indices volume is erroneous if downloading for more than one day. This issue is also fixed now.

Getbhavcopy version 2.0.3 released

I am releasing a new version of Getbhavcopy with the following additional features and fixes:

Added the facility to download three new BSE indices DOL30, DOL100 and DOL200.
Added the facility to use the system proxy settings (i.e. from internet explorer). So for those users who need to download data in their office but are unable to do so, can do it now. However please note that this will not bypass your company proxy rules. It will work only if your company does not block nse server and you can access it using your browser.
Fixed an exception that was generated if someone tries to download extremely old data say from 2000 onwards. Most of you will not experience this, but still I decided to fix it.

The exception that was generated was the following:

System.IndexOutOfRangeException: Index was outside the bounds of the array.

Fixed an excpetion that gets generated if some one tries to download data but has deleted the NSE and BSE data download directories. Now you will not get an excpetion but an error message in the status window and logs.

Now i believe that the current version of Getbhavcopy has reached a stable state where I do not have any pending issues to be fixed. So this will be the last version of Getbhavcopy in the 2.0.X series.

Next I plan to implement additional functionality to download Total Deliverable Quantity as Open Interest for BSE stocks too, as it is currently availabe for NSE. Hope it is worth the wait and effort.

Getbhavcopy version 2.0.2 released

A new version of Getbhavcopy has been released. This is a minor version update that addresses to fix the following issues:

Fixed whitespace in the Open, High, Low and Close columns in the downloaded bhavcopy file for NSE Indices
Added a 0 (zero) value in the Open Interest column of the downloaded bhavcopy file for NSE Indices. This was done to fix a minor data issue pointed out by the member guy in the forum post titled "Volume/ marketcap wrong.... if Open Interest not there"
Added facilty to download additional BSE indices (CONSDURBL, CAPGOODS and HLTHCARE) which were not downloaded by version 2.0.1. This was done to service the request by the member klo in the forum post "Your getbhavocopy utility don't able to download all bse indices data"
Changed Paypal donation link in Getbhavcopy to point to ChipIn. Also changed the donation amount from the fixed 7$ to a variable amount. I prefer that 4 out of 10 users donate 2$ or 3$ rather than to have all 10 think that 7$ is too high for donating for my effort.
Added a new 'Help' button in the "Options" tab that links to Getbhavcopy options tab documentation.
Fixed links in the "About Getbhavcopy" tab to poiint to appropriate page on www.getbhavcopy.com.

Installation Instructions:

Download the zip file from Download Getbhavcopy.
Extract the zip file and replace the old getbhavcopy.exe file with this new one.

Finally, I updated the website so that Getbhavcopy Download page is accessible to site members only. Site membership is totally FREE.

Importing bulk Getbhavcopy data into Metastock

While most of you would be using Getbhavcopy as a daily stock market data downloader, it is a powerful historical stock data downloader too. There would be many users who would like to download bulk data i.e. about 3 to 6 months of historical stock data at one time and want to import it into your technical analysis software.

Downloading bulk data using Getbhavcopy is not a big deal because you can set the date range for which you want to download stock data and Getbhavcopy will download the data in one stretch i.e. without requiring your input.

But the issue arises when you need to import this data into your technical analysis software. Imagine importing daily EOD data for about 100 days into your technical analysis software. I have a tip for you where you can import the entire bulk of data into your technical analysis software in a single go.

I will try to explain using Metastock as the technical analysis software, but I believe the steps are vaild for any technical analysis software.

As an example lets consider you want to download data from 01-Jul-2008 to 15-Jan-2009.

Download the data

Start Getbhavcopy.
Uncheck the 'Enable output header' checkbox for the exchange (i.e NSE or BSE) for which you are downloading data. If you are downloading data for both exchanges then uncheck for both.
Save these Getbhavcopy Options.
Download the data using Getbhavcopy.

So now the data will be downloaded in the download directories.

Setup the data files for merge.

Create two directories C:\NSETEMP and C:\BSETEMP
Copy the files 2008-07-01-NSE-EQ.txt to 2009-01-15-NSE-EQ.txt from your NSE download directory to the C:\NSETEMP directory.
Copy the files 2008-07-01-BSE-EQ.txt to 2009-01-15-BSE-EQ.txt from your BSE download directory to the C:\BSETEMP directory.
Now in your C:\BSETEMP directory open the data file for the first day in your date range (i.e.2008-07-01-BSE-EQ.txt in our example) in Notepad and add the following line as the first line in that file and save it.

<ticker>, <date>, <open>, <high>, <low>, <close>, <vol>, <o/i>

Merge the files

Now start the command prompt. You can do so from Start >> Run, type cmd and press enter.
Change the directory to the C:\NSETEMP directory. Now you should be in the NSETEMP directory.
Enter command

copy *.txt NSE.txt

This copy command creates a single file with the data of all the txt files you copied in the C:\NSETEMP directory.

Similarly change to the BSETEMP directory and do the same to generate the BSE.txt file.

Now you can follow the instructions in the document 'Importing Getbhavcopy data into Metastock' to import the combined NSE.txt and BSE.txt file into Metastock, but make sure you set the proper date range while importing the data.
