I had a heartbreaking conversation with a client this week. She related that she had won a three hour organizing consultation as a prize at a fundraising auction. She was delighted as we had worked together and she understands the value of organizing help.

The client told me how this expert spent much of the time going from space to space telling her she had to throw this away and that away. The organizer gave her the impression that her collections were childish and unnecessary. These judgments cut like a knife.

What is Stopping You From Getting Organized?

Despite your best efforts to get and stay organized you have not been able to get yourself out from under. Here are some familiar reasons why your efforts can fail and some strategies you can use to move forward.

You can't envision yourself as an organized person. Look in the mirror and tell yourself: "I can be organized! I will make it happen." The power of belief is huge, if you cannot envision success you will have a very difficult time achieving it. If you are still stuck, get help! It is easy to be critical and negative about your past efforts. Identify areas of success and use them to build on; maybe it is a great calendar or a neat closet. Stay in action, even for a few minutes a day. A clear shelf can lead to a clear book case. The clear bookcase leads to a clear desk. The clear desk leads to a clear closet, one step at a time.

Using a Timer to Boost Productivity

Using a timer will improve productivity. I have clients who think that everything will take longer than it really does, because they have never really assessed how long things take. I often recommend the Time Timer

This timer allows you to comprehend time as a window of opportunity. As time passes the red indicator on the clock face becomes smaller and smaller. This is a way for you to “see time”. Visual learners and those with ADHD find this timer especially helpful. It can help to focus on something if you tell yourself it is only for 10 minutes or 30 minutes or whatever time you choose. A quick glance will show you how much of your window remains. When the timer goes off you can reset and continue or you can reward yourself for a job well done. No more getting lost in an activity and missing other important activities in you day. Time Timer is available in several formats: large, small, watches, computer based and even a app for your iphone.

Organizing Dilemma Number One

As Part of our participation in the National Association of Professional Organizers GO Month (Get Organized Month) I will be providing answers to the organizing dilemmas submitted by the Members of the Business Network International – Business Referrals Unlimited Chapter

Our first dilemma is submitted by Judy Carlough of One Day Home Staging and Redesign.

Judy’s Problem is:

Right now, I’m having a problem with car organization, specifically, the front passenger seat. The back of my SUV is under control with my design and decorating totes, car emergency stuff, etc. but the passenger seat has become a dumping ground of papers, library books, videos to take to my sister, etc. I lose things papers get damaged, I get up into my apartment and find what I need is in the car, and so forth.

I “intend” to clean the seat off every day, but—well, you know how that works.

Can you suggest a better system?

To help Judy with her problem we will need to create a safe and secure portable system for Judy to carry her items back and forth from her car to her office and anywhere else she may need to take them. So what items does she need? Well let’s think about it: she has books, videos, important papers like invoices, checks and receipts. Some of what is there could also be trash and can simple be discarded. The remainder of her items will be sorted into her new portable filing system. So what is this system?
