GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter Merle Haggard pays tribute to one of country music’s finest

Sometime around 1956, I picked up a copy of Country Song Roundup. For you new kids, that was a song magazine that was a must-have for an aspiring songwriter. And it was important to me whose names were written at the bottom of the songs.

At the time I was kinda out of touch, up the river, incarcerated. Little things meant a lot inside there. There were two new songs I didn’t recognize, didn’t know the melody to, and a couple names attributed to them that I was barely familiar with. In fact, these two songs were written by a couple of guys who would become lifelong friends of mine — Roger Miller and George Jones. I believe those songs were Roger’s “Big Harlan Taylor” and George’s “Seasons Of My Heart.”

Jason Aldean got to spend some with his mother’s favorite singer recently. Jason and George Jones were both at the Nashville party celebrating this year’s Grammy awards, and the young singer just had to go up and say hello.

“I had met him a few years back and got to do show with him,” Jason tells The Boot. “He’s my mom’s favorite singer of all time. That was before we name-checked him in ‘Dirt Road Anthem’ So this time I was curious to know what he thought about the song.”

Some of country music biggest stars turned out for the annual Grammy nominees party Tuesday evening (Jan. 17) at Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville.

Staged by the Nashville chapter of the Recording Academy, the organization that confers the Grammy awards, the event consisted of a red carpet walk for the nominees and a simultaneous cocktail party in an adjacent room for music industry figures.

George Jones, who will receive a lifetime achievement Grammy, strolled from reporter to reporter with his wife Nancy and his publicist in tow.

As one of the most prolific country artists in history, George Jones has had more than 150 hits over his half-century career. From honky tonk to country ballads, he has remained at the top of the charts with hits such as “White Lightning,” “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and “Still Doin’ Time.” Jones is a two-time GRAMMY winner, Country Music Hall of Fame inductee and a Kennedy Center Honors recipient. At 80 years old, he continues to tour, playing more than 60 shows each year.
