Do Spatially Targeted Redevelopment Programs Spillover?

This Regional Science and Urban Economics paper estimates spillover effects from a spatially-targeted redevelopment. Areas that border or are similar decline in employment business establishments. Using spillover prone areas to estimate program effects causes upward bias. In many cases spillovers more than offset positive program effects.

Biofuels and the politics of mapmaking

The authors of this Political Geography paper analyze how 'the local politics of mapping is influencing biofuel negotiations. Conflicting maps and land claims and information gaps create mistrust and ambiguity. In resulting cycles of contention, firms are able to acquire some land. But, as fieldwork in Tanzania reveals, the outcome is not a coordinated “land grab.” Instead, the process thwarts development opportunities for companies and communities.'

Business Improvement Districts and the recession: Implications for Public Realm Governance and Management in England

The author of this Progress in Planning article notes that although Business Improvement Districts are now part of urban governance their resilience is untested. He finds that recession and spending cuts have affected BIDs income only marginally so far, and that BIDs services mostly unaffected but capital programmes suffer from absence of grants. The authors looks at how coping strategies of BIDs are leading to diverging paths in different localities. Their resilience is confirmed but multiple roles are emerging in public realm management.

How emotions motivate volunteerism in ecological restoration

This Emotion, Space and Society manuscript describes, analyzes and synthesizes the emotions expressed by volunteers in a community-based ecological restoration effort in the western United States. We present a qualitative case study, the Partners for Native Plants (PNP) project, with the hopes of better understanding what emotions, flanked by values, motivations and goals, lead to involvement in environmental initiatives. The authors conclude in saying that the information may be useful in understanding how to appeal to emotions and engage urban people as volunteers in hands-on environmental restoration.

Residential preferences of the ‘creative class’

The authors of this Cities paper examine the residential preferences of the ‘creative class’ in Dublin, and critique the focus on ‘soft’ amenity-based factors within the ‘creative class’ thesis. They also show the continued relevance of the life-cycle in residential choice.

Themed Issue - The key to sustainable urban development in UK cities? The influence of density on social sustainability

In this themed issue from Progress in Planning, the authors examine the impact of density on aspects of social sustainability. Dense neighbourhoods are more likely to provide good access to services/facilities. Dense neighbourhoods are more likely to provide poor access to quality green space. Residents in denser neighbourhoods are more likely to report feeling unsafe. Generally, less social interaction occurs in denser neighbourhoods.
