We had to separate the month and the year values from the pages that describe the Birth of different people. After having done that we now have a long list of people who were born on this day. It will update every day of course. It shows the few names and then a link to view more of the names that are available that had birthdays on this date.
Check it out at: http://my-family-lineage.com/wiki/Main_Page

This uses a parser function on the home page and it queries semantic values that are defined elsewhere on the wiki.

It is especially interesting with the genealogy of famous persons that is part of the website. Who knows, you might share a birthday with a famous actor or actress, a president, a head of a monarchy or some other famous person.

I had been very curious about how sites like Ancestry.com claim that they have the 1940 census. What does that mean? It isn’t fully indexed yet. I thought this might be a great learning experience.

Also, if the information is freely available, then it would be valuable to be able to import the data into our (Semantic Web) genealogy application. It isn’t feasible to get every census record into the data store, the database. But perhaps there will be others that want to see the data made available in a format that allows for sharing of data, as linked open data. That is what our application My Family Lineage is all about.

Recently, we decided to take on the task of importing, into the My Family Lineage website application, all of the various facts or events that are part of the GEDCOM specification. We have been using a Perl script for importing GEDCOM files. There is available a Perl package or module called GEDCOM.pm that defines various Facts or Events. Many of these Facts and Events are going to be defined as Classes. For example, we already have the class Person which is also defined by a Person Template. In addition, we have a Template for Marriage, which is a group event, as defined here: http://vocab.org/bio/0.1/.html#Marriage, using the Bio vocabulary for describing Biographic Events and facts. When we refer to that term for Marriage using that vocabulary we write it as bio:Marriage. The bio prefix is associated with the URI (Universal Resource Identifier, of which URL, Universal Resource Locator is used to refer to web pages and it is a subset of URI).

It should be added that the application uses the FOAF ontology to refer to Persons. A foaf:Person is a class and each individual person, living or whoever lived is an individual representative or instance of the Person class, or more specifically the foaf:Person class. Note, the foaf: prefix as referring to the FOAF ontology which is defined or specified here: http://xmlns.com/foaf/0.1/, meaning that the prefix foaf: is used in place of http://xmlns.com/foaf/0.1/

This event is a class that has properties such as the Data, Location, and the Persons who were Married. As stated above, we use a Person class defined by a page named Template:Person. So, for each class there will be a Template that defines the class. We can also use a Template to define more than one Class, as we would do for the Event Class, where we will have a field for defining the type of Event. Therefore we will have one page for each specific event and that link will connect to a person or a group of persons, as in the case of Marriage.

We had been using the BIO vocabulary to refer to all the Events and related facts, including Classes and Properties, but where the BIO vocabulary was lacking some terms that are used in Genealogy, we found the GEDCOM X specification does supply the other terms. These terms are defined by this page here: http://www.gedcomx.org/gx_factType.html which defines factTypes.

As I state this, it might be important to mention that in order to use these vocabularies in the wiki application they must be imported. This is done by creating pages that handle this by referencing the vocabulary to be imported, the uri for that vocabulary, and the terms to be imported or made available. Each term is separated by a | character and a Type declaration, for the wiki. If we are talking about Properties then the value could be a string, a number, a date, etc. or a Page. For example, using the Relationship vocabulary, we define a Property of a Person to be rel:spouseOf. The value of that property represents another Person, obviously. Whereas the term Marriage from the Biographic vocabulary is of Type:Category because it represents a Class and a Class can have many members.

The following list represents other GEDCOM facts that we will be importing into the wiki from GEDCOM files. There also will be Semantic Forms for creating pages that represent these facts, unless we are dealing with a Property, such as Social Security Number which is a Property of a Person and as such does not require a page of its own. These facts are defined in the GEDCOM.pm Perl package. Included are the GEDCOM definitions from Appendix A and the GEDCOM X values.

My Family Lineage currently, as of the last time I checked, has 2,569,671 facts about Individuals, Families, Events, and more, as of the last time I checked this. These facts are represented throughout the website. We have the site setup with a different page for each Individual, Family, Marriage, Birth, Death, and various other facts are also represented on separate pages. That might seem inconvenient to have this information on so many different pages, and in so many different places. However, there are built in features (functions) that pull in these facts to associate them with a Person or a family. This does give a great deal of freedom and flexibility when entering information about a Person or any of these facts. At the same time, the information and data is very structured and defined by published standards for the web.

It was through the import of GEDCOM files that this website was able to grow so fast and contain so much information. Talking about this to others is somewhat complicated. One doesn’t want to insult anyone’s intelligence and explain what a GEDCOM is but there are some people that might use this site that do not know what a GEDCOM file is.

For such persons, I’ll explain that briefly, this is a file format that allows different programs or applications, used for Genealogy research and sharing, to communicate with each other and share their information. Each program will have its own format for storing information but most if not all programs will allow for exporting one’s data or information in GEDCOM format. Even online sites like Ancestry.com allow one to save a GEDCOM file from the data/information you have collected on their website.

I started finding that there are freely available GEDCOM files, which hold the genealogy information of famous people. So, I started adding these genealogy files to the website application… I’m talking about ‘My Family Lineage,’ of course. Some of the names and genealogies date back to biblical times and contain famous persons from the bible. Other famous people whose genealogy is included include Abraham Lincoln, William Shatner, Princes Stephanie of Monaco, whose family tree includes Grace Kelly – another famous name.

Add your genealogy, it’s easy. If you have worked with any family tree or genealogy software, they will have an option to export the information in GEDCOM format. Then you just click on the link on the right side of the menu on every page and you will be taken to a page where you can browse to the file and then click upload to begin the process. The file is not instantly imported. We had to break this step up into processes that run on the server. Over a period of time, it will create pages for all the persons, families, births, deaths, marriages, divorces, graduations and other events. It will also display an ancestral tree on each page starting with the name of the person referred to on that page.

Help and Frequently asked questions for the website application My Family Lineage at: http://my-family-lineage.com/wiki/Main_Page

My Family Lineage, the main site, was in need of some more detailed information about the features that are available on the website or that are available with this website application. While I try to make it as intuitive as possible, the fact is that any site like this is going to have help sections, a FAQ or some other means to describe and present the features. For that reason I created a FAQ page here.

I’d like to reproduce some of that here and get some feedback if anyone has any questions.

To begin…

What kind of Information Can I find here and how is it organized?

To describe the type of information you will find here, let’s start with Persons and Families. These are separated into different pages. So, there is a page for a person and then if that person is in a Family, then the person will be listed on the corresponding Family page. The website also allows people to enter information about important events in a persons life, or important family events. All of this information is Categorized, Classified and Organized (avoiding the technical terminology here) in such a way so as to allow it to be searched and browsed easily and accurately.

Most of your searches will return information that very accurately matches what you were searching. Other search engines on the web for example, often give results that are very different than what you were trying to find. This is because of the way things are designed and defined for computers to better understand the underlying information. This is different then keyword type searching that just looks for keywords without having any knowledge of the meaning of those keywords. At this time, you will mostly see this in the Browse features on the site, e.g. Browse Persons or Browse Families. Other search features will be available in the future.

Description of the project:

“My Family Lineage” is a unique and one of a kind web based genealogy application. It is located at
http://my-family-lineage.com/wiki/Main_Page

One of the important features of a genealogy/family tree application is the ability to work with, or read GEDCOM files. GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMunication, and it is a specification for exchanging genealogical data between different software. Most software programs, if not all, will both read and import GEDCOM files and output GEDCOM files. So, any person who has been doing genealogy research will have used some form of software running on their computer or they will be using websites or web applications like Ancestry.com, Rootsweb, Geni, Genealogy.com, OneGreatFamily.com or various other websites. This software will offer an option to save or download their family tree and genealogy information in GEDCOM format.

Such files are usually named with the extension .ged. My Family Lineage has as a key feature the ability to upload a person’s GEDCOM file containing their genealogy information. It will create separate pages for each Individual, each Marriage, as well as information about a person’s Birth, Death, Marriage(s), Divorce, Emigration and Graduation(s). In addition, the other information that is biographical in nature will also be included on the Individual’s page – the page that describes the Person.

Users can create their family tree manually as well by entering the name of a person with whom they would like to start entering information. They will be given an easy to use form for filling in what they know about the person, such as full name, gender, spouse, parents, siblings, children, grandparents, graduation and other life events as well as a biographical statement. The form also allows the person to upload one or more photos.

When a page is created using the GEDCOM import or manually, as described, the website software will automatically create an ancestry diagram showing several generations. By clicking on any name in the diagram, the user is taken to the page about hat person.

The Semantic Web offers “vocabularies” made up of terms that can be understood by software across the web. This data is openly accessible and can be searched. This application provides such features because it uses common vocabularies that are related appropriately to genealogy information. Using these standard vocabularies allows users to search not just this site but other sites all across the globe, if they use these Semantic Web vocabularies.

A “vocabulary” as such is necessary for a computer to understand what is meant be certain terms. Previously, computer software had no idea about the meaning of any data on a web page or in a database. In addition, the structure of the database was not made public and even when it was public one had to learn about how a database is storing its information. The Semantic Web eliminates this problem by using a standardized format for storing any kind of data on the Semantic Web. This allows you to find and/or discover information that might exist elsewhere.

You can get started on “My Family Lineage,” for free using any of the methods described. Then instead of having to visit many other websites to see what information they might have, you can just perform your search from within the My Family Lineage website. This last feature is still being developed. In addition it relies on other sites to make their data available in these standardized formats which I’ve described as part of and definitive of the Semantic Web.

This is the next generation of the web and it is happening now.

Visit http://my-family-lineage.com/wiki/Main_Page
signup and get started right away. It is completely free and we’d love to hear what you discover.

Just within the first week of having released this application and through the use of the GEDCOM import feature, we’ve grown to having over 12,000 pages describing different individuals.

Thanks,
Bruce Whealton

Today, the 31st of January 2012, we have the genealogy site setup finally to allow GEDCOM files to be imported into the website. In my previous post entitled “Import Your GEDCOM and Connect” I briefly discussed the feature that I wanted to have in my application to allow a GEDCOM file to be imported into the application. Today we got the final features of that import process put in place. The code for this was completed today. There were a few glitches that didn’t make sense to me. I have dedicated hosting so things should be fast but the server was also doing some other database heavy tasks for another project. I’ve hired Juri Linkov on odesk.com to work with getting a Perl script developed to make this work.

While many sites to support importing a GEDCOM into the site and software has been doing this for some time, the goal I had was to be able to use Semantic Web technologies to enable new features and to eventually allow the data to be part of a giant global database of information. This site here: http://www.gedcoms.com/downloads.html offers public GEDCOM files that one can download and use. I thought I’d include some famous people’s GEDCOM files into the site. Maybe our visitors will find or discover a connection to someone famous.

I’ll have to keep folks updated on this progress over time.
