TV Premiere Dates

I have decided to no longer run the popular, weekly TV premiere listings here at GeekTonic. It just takes up too much time to do something my heart is not into. I watch a number of shows these days, but most of those shows are on the cable networks and many of them I watch on my own time via Neflix or on-demand. So instead, I’ll share some of my favorite spots for finding TV information and in a future post I’ll share more secrets for keeping up on TV series.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres on ABC 9/24

I’ve always found the Futon Critic to be a great resource for TV show info including premiere dates, network lineups, and show-specific info. For good episode guides head over to TV.com

What new shows will I be watching? This article in the huffingtonpost pretty much sums it up for me. I might watch Marvel's Agents of SHIELD (Premiere Date September 24th) mostly because of Joss Whedon. I also might check out Surviving Jack (Premieres Midseason 2014?) to see if it’s funny. That’s it unless you guys tell me I should be watching something else that’s new on TV.

My favorites list looks something like this:

Breaking Bad (just began binge watching this over the Summer (thanks Netflix!) and get to watch the final episodes of the series on TWC. Thankfully the series will be over by the time I move on to Google Fiber since AMC is one of the only “big” channels they don’t carry.
The Newsroom – again we just started this one since moving into the new loft. We binge-watched it and now are caught up and watching week-to-week.
Downton Abbey – yes, I lose my man-card for this, but it’s a great show. Really! Started this one on Netflix and then via the web (not going to say how…). Now caught up.
How I Met Your Mother – I’m tired of this one honestly, but am hanging in for the end of this series.
Person of Interest – My favorite network series right now
Revolution – I liked this at first, but am quickly getting wary of it. Not sure if I’ll make it much further.
Modern Family – Still funny to me. One of the lighter series I follow
The Big Bang Theory – Of course.
Homeland – I’ve only seen season one, but some day will catch up
Game of Thrones – Love this and wonder how the TV series will venture from the books

Chicago Fire-9pm on NBC - Chicago Fire, produced by Dick Wolf, stars Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund and Charlie Barnett, in an action-driven drama exploring the complex and heroic men and women of the Chicago Fire Department. Derek Haas and Michael Brandt wrote the pilot and also produce, along with Danielle Gelber, Peter Jankowski and Jeffrey Nachmanoff, who directed the pilot.

We’re back with a bunch of new television this week. Many of your favorite returning shows are back this week as well. Below is a listing by-day of the new series premieres with the time and network. I’m also throwing in an abbreviated listing of returning series premieres and series finales.

Remember, this is on a trial basis. We’ll see how it goes.

The new show you definitely need to add to your favorite list is "Last Resort” on ABC.

Tuesday, 9/25

Ben and Kate-7:30pm on Fox – This new single-camera sitcom has Ben, an exuberant dreamer, returns to his hometown, he realizes his perennially responsible younger sister, Kate, needs help raising her 5-year-old daughter; Kate prepares for what turns out to be a disastrous first date. Early reviews say this is pretty average but does have a likeable cast.

The Mindy Project-8:30pm on Fox – Sitcom by executive producerMindy Kaling. Early reviews say this one is worth checking out – pretty funny. Synopsis: After getting drunk and disorderly at her ex-boyfriend's wedding, Dr. Mindy Lahiri realizes she needs to get her personal and professional life back on track.

Vegas-9:10 on CBS – New drama where rancher Ralph Lamb becomes a sheriff, he begins investigating the murder of the governor's niece and instantly clashes with mobster Vincent Savino. Stars Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis and Carrie-Anne Moss. Great cast with a promising setting, but early reviews said the pilot was somewhat boring.

Brickleberry-9:30pm on Comedy Central – New animated comedy

Season Premieres: NCIS, New Girl, NCIS: Los Angeles, Private Practice

Wednesday, 9/26

Animal Practice-7pm on NBC – New sitcom where Justin Kirk stars as a vet who loves animals but hates their owners. This one also stars Tyler Labine. Early reviews are very mixed – some will like it some will hate it. It has a monkey in a labcoat is all you need to know.

The Neighbors-8:30pm on ABC – Comedy with this plot: When Marty Weaver and his wife, Debbie, move to a gated community with their three children, they discover their neighbors are aliens who had not met humans. I give this one a month to survive.

Season Premieres: The Middle, Criminal Minds, Modern Family, Law & Order: SVU, CSI

Thursday, 9/27

Last Resort-7pm on ABC – This drama was written by Shawn Ryan and is on my must record list. If you’re not sure, be sure and at least record this pilot episode as it’s a good one. Plot: After questioning orders to fire at a foreign country, Capt. Marcus Chaplin and the crew of the world's most powerful nuclear submarine find themselves under attack and declared enemies of the United States.

Elementary-9:01 on CBS – It’s a modern-day Sherlock Holmes with Lucy Liu as Watson. And it’s set it New York City to really tick of the British. It’s not great, but looks to be more entertaining than most expected. I think it’s worth giving a chance if you enjoy the genre.

Capture Cowboys-10:02 on History – new reality series

666 Park Avenue-9:01pm on ABC – A new paranormal drama. Nice cast, decent plot, but quite slow and shall I say almost boring? Plot: Jane and Henry are offered a chance to manage a premier apartment building in New York; while the couple is seduced by the intoxicating lifestyle of the Upper East Side, supernatural forces in the building make Henry and Jane question their decision.

Destination Fear-10pm on Travel – reality/travel

Season Premieres: 60 Minutes, The Amazing Race, Once Upon a Time, The Simpsons, Making Monsters, Bob’s Burgers, The Good Wife, Revenge, Family Guy, American Dad, The Mentalist

After receiving a bunch of e-mails telling me how much they wished I had continued my TV listings, I thought I’d do a scaled-down version. I’m stripping the TV Premiere listings to the bone and only giving you what I think you need. Below is a listing by-day of the new series premieres with the time and network. I’m also throwing in an abbreviated listing of returning series premieres and series finales.

Remember, this is on a trial basis. We’ll see how it goes.

This week the two big premieres are “The Mob Doctor” which is a show I’m hearing is a disappointing mess, Revolution by JJ Abrahms which I highly recommend based on the freely available pilot episode.

Let’s Ask America-6:30pm on NBC

The Mob Doctor-8pm on Fox-The Mob Doctor stars Jordana Spiro as a cardiothoracic surgeon paying off her brother's gambling debt by doing medical work for gangsters. Evanston native Zach Gilford and Jamie Lee Kirchner play her day-job colleagues at a hospital, with William Forsythe as a mob boss.

Revolution-9pm on NBC-Revolution by from J.J. Abrams and Eric Kripke. This one is an adventure thriller where the family attempts to reunite in a post-apocalyptic American landscape. Basically, there was a really serious blackout of tech. Nothing electronic works – every geek’s worst mightmare! Don’t miss this one.

Trailer for the new Netflix Exclusive TV Series Lilyhammer

Lilyhammer (Netflix) Netflix launches its ambitious new streaming TV series with all 8 episodes of its first season available all at once on February 6th. The new Netflix Inc. original series starring and co-written by E Street Band guitarist and “The Sopranos” actor Steven Van Zandt. I’m betting this one is a huge success for Netflix and is an example of the future of scripted TV. More on that on GeekTonic this week.

Smash (10pm on NBC) New music/drama series from executive producer Steven Spielberg. It’s about the making of a broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Starring Katherine McPhee, Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. The buzz and early reviews on this one are very good. Will be interesting to see if the ratings are good also.

The River (9pm on ABC) New mystery series written by the writer/director of “Paranormal” and filmed much like the “Blair Witch Project.” Six months after adventurer Dr. Emmet Cole goes missing in the Amazon, his location beacon sends out a signal; Emmet's wife, Tess, along with her son and Emmet's film crew, embark on a journey to find him; a crew member goes missing.

Doomsday Preppers (9pm on National Geographic) New documentary series

The Real Housewives of Orange County (9pm on Bravo) Season 7 premiere

Wednesday, February 8

Person to Person (8pm on CBS) New news series with the same name and format as the one that was once hosted by Edward R. Murrow. This version is hosted by Charlie Rose and Lara Logan. The focus is on celebrity interviews in their homes. Should be interesting to see how this one does.

Guess Who Succeeds (8pm on Food) New series where three real-life food entrepreneurs fight for their business.

JJ Abrams Alcatraz premieres Monday on Fox

Alcatraz (8pm on Fox) The new J.J. Abrams produced series. This one is a crime mystery/drama where Detective Rebecca Madsen and Dr. Diego Soto joins forces with a secret agency charged with catching recently resurfaced Alcatraz inmates; the team retraces the steps of the past to apprehend a sniper who is targeting young victims. Starring Jorge Garcia, Sam Neill and more. It’s on my list to record – we’ll see if it lives up to the hype.

Work It (8:30pm on ABC) New sitcom series that has been getting a lot of bad press due to the cross dressing theme. Synopsis: Two guys decide to dress and act as women during the daytime in order to keep jobs as pharmaceutical reps turn into their normal selves at night when they hang out together at their local bar.

Celebrity Wife Swap (9pm on ABC) New reality spinoff series. First episode goes like this: Gayle Haggard, wife of former TV evangelist Ted Haggard, trades lives with Steffanie Sampson, who is engaged to actor Gary Busey and rejects organized religion.

Jane by Design (9pm on ABC Family) New comedy series. Synopsis: Jane is a 16-year-old high school outsider who lives a double life as a 20-something design assistant in the corporate world. Stars Andi MacDowell

As we move into mid-October, a few more premieres arrive although not many notable ones. Matter of fact there have already been a few cancellations from this season’s crop of new series including “H8R”, “Free Agents”, and “Playboy Club. One that has been picked up for the full first season is “New Girl” with Zooey Deshanel although the 3rd episode that was slated to air this Wednesday will go on hiatus until November 1st thanks to those crazy network execs who decided last minute to show expanded segments of “The X Factor” along with the Major League Baseball Playoffs and World Series.

Fall TV Premiers From the “End Users” Perspective

Like a good wife, I read my husband’s blog. Sometimes I understand it, sometimes I don’t. Most of the time I just tell him when he has used the wrong their, they’re, there, etc. But we have come to the time of year where I actually can help him with his blog. Usually it is in the form of me pontificating and him writing, but he is fairly busy with this crazy thing that pays our bills and I am trying to ignore the fact that I too should be working (grading papers or something).

My favorite way to procrastinate is the old boob tube! I cannot remember a time when I was not glued to the tube. One of my earliest memories was using a specific break in Search for Tomorrow to know when it was time to catch my kindergarten school bus. (Yes, I watched soaps when I was 5 and still watch them at…. NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS). Because of my VAST experience and love affair with the glowing box, I like to think that I can pick a few winners and losers here and there. A few from last year surprised me, but for the most part I was pretty close.

After watching the teasers GeekTonic posted here are my thoughts & predictions.

ABC

1. Charlie’s Angels – Even before GeekTonic posted his teasers, I had picked this one to have the shortest lifespan of all of the fall premiers. I stand by this prediction after watching all of the teasers at this point. 9/22 8pm

2. Last Man Standing – Tim Allen will appeal to many. The preview is cute, but we will see how long the gender stereotypes will draw the laughs. It will survive on strength of script and acting through the first season. 10/11 8pm

3. Man Up – Teaser was funny. I might give this a chance depending on where it lands in the line-up. Our SageTV set-up only has 6 tuners. 10/18 8:30pm

4. Once Upon a Time – I will not be watching and I doubt many others will either. It would make an intriguing movie, but not sure this will make it as a series. 10/23 8pm

5. Pan Am – This is one of the 2 rip-offs of the wildly popular Mad Men genre. Personally, I feel they will both fail. The question is, how epically? 9/25 10pm

6. Revenge – According to something I read recently, women watch more hours of TV than men by a huge amount per week. This one was made with us in mind. This is the last season for Desperate Housewives and with 2 ABC soaps cancelled we need someplace to get our drama. I will watch it and see how I feel after a few episodes. 9/21 10pm

7. Suburgatory – I don’t know why, but the preview makes me giggle. Probably, because I teach HS. Timeslot will mean everything to this show. It needs to lead into or follow a show popular with HS students like Glee. It cannot compete with an already established winner with the age group regardless of its witty irreverence. 9/28 8:30pm

CBS

1. Two Broke Girls - This show is broke! The preview had a few giggles, but I think the best is what you are seeing, which isn’t a raging endorsement by any stretch of the imagination. 9/19 9:3pm

2. A Gifted Man – The Ghost Whisperer meets House. Preview makes it watchable, but I am going to hold my opinion for a few weeks into the season. I will DVR and see what happens (probably a 2nd tier selection). 9/23 8pm

3. How to be a Gentleman - The acting is TERRIBLE but the script is AWESOME!!! I will watch this. I hope it is as good as the clip. 9/29 8:30pm

4. Person of Interest – This show is going to appeal to some geeks out there. A cop show, but has some sci-fi added in. Throw in Lost’s Ben and you have a winner! The Geektonic house will be watching this. 9/22 9pm

5. Unforgettable – Forgettable. I don’t know about this one as a show, but I can tell you that she would be REALLY annoying in real life. Can you imagine someone that never forgot a detail of any argument you ever had? 9/20 10pm

Fox

1. Allen Gregory – People might like this, but I am not a fan of the “adult cartoon” genre. I still cannot believe that Archer made it out of season 1. 10/30 8:30pm

2. New Girl - The only thing holding this one back long term is whether or not Fox can keep Zooey Deschanel on network TV. This is my pic to be this year’s break away comedy. Love her, love the concept, love the script! THIS IS A WINNER!!! This season’s Modern Family. 9/20 9pm

3. Terra Nova – I prefer to hold judgment on sci-fi adventures until they actually get going. I worry that the cost benefit of this show will have the network cancelling it at the end of the season despite decent ratings. It is going to have to get GREAT ratings to survive. Do I really want to get vested in another 1 season wonder? (Flash Forward & Invasion) 9/26 8pm

4. X Factor – Simon and Paula are reunited and it feels so good…. JK – this will do ok. We shall soon see if Simon really has star power after all. 9/21 8pm

NBC

1. Free Agents - This looks TERRIBLE!, but I hated Community and it survives.

2. Grimm- I was not impressed. Kind of creepy, actually. 9/14 10:30pm

3. The Playboy Club - See my comments on Pan Am. The thing this one has going for it over Pan Am is bunnies. 9/19 10pm

4. Prime Suspect – Hurray! Another cop show! Girl trying to make it with the big bad boys club. I think I will pass, unless they get an uber-sweet time slot where it has NO completion. 9/22 10pm

5. Smash – I love me some Broadway musicals, but I don’t necessarily like watching TV shows about the making of a Broadway musical. The woman can really sing, but I don’t know that this one has any staying power. 2/6 10pm

6. Up All Night – Christina Applegate is back on the scene. Clip was funny, but time slot will make or break this show. 9/14 10pm

7. Whitney – Thought this was FUNNY. I will watch it. 9/22 9:30pm

CW

I am over the age of 18 so I don’t care about any of these shows!

Summation

Winners: New Girl, Revenge & Person of Interest

Losers: Charlie’s Angels, Pan Am & Once Upon a Time

Take these opinions for what they are…. I am still reeling over the cancelation of Outsourced & Terriers, two faves in the Geektonic house, and mystified by the success of Archer & Parks and Recreation.
