domain="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#">family

It's officially Spazztime

Could there be more hours in a day please? I've been in a rush to get things sorted lately, here's just a few things I'm working on:

1) L's birthday is today. My little monkey is officially eight years old now and he's not such a little monkey any more. (more like a big goober most days ;) We decorated last night so that when he got up everything would be ready, we cooked the breakfast he said he wanted: eggs, hashbrowns and pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream. So we are all officially stuffed and he just finished opening his presents. He's in love with his Star Wars transformers and has a hard time putting them down to play his new wii game lol so I guess it's been a success so far. We've still got to make it through the rest of the day, he's got cake and more presents to come at the in-laws this afternoon but the monkeys won't get to play outside because of the weather today. Other then that I think it'll be a great day.

2) We've spent the last few days getting all the kids clothes together and having a fashion show in the livingroom to see what fits good, what's good for school and what goes in the donate & play clothes bins. All in all they're good to go there, just need a few more essentials and they'll be ready for school.

3) School starts on August 6th for V and August 7th for L this year, schools tend to start a bit early around here so it was expected but still somehow managed to sneak up on us like it does every year. Guess we were just enjoying summer a bit too much. Now we're in a mad rush to get all the supplies and paperwork sorted.

4) We're moving this month. We've been looking for a new place to rent forever but wanted to stay in the same school district so we were limited a bit there and limited budget wise but we managed to find the perfect little place.

There's only one drawback, it's a two bedroom. But after crunching the numbers it turns out to be more sq ft then our current three bedroom so we're not loosing space, the kids would have one large bedroom instead of their two small ones now. Plus the monkeys are inseparable and always in one room anyway so we're going to get the boys bunkbeds and put a divider in for V so she has her girls section of the room. I think it'll all work out great. The plusses are a big open kitchen/dining/living area which I love so I can keep an eye on the kids while cooking & cleaning and it's closer to the bus stop so I can quickly pick up the kids if it's raining since we've only got the one vehicle now. Economy cutbacks are evil but I think we'll still be happy and comfortable so I'm excited.

We've got to work around school schedules and moving. Spazzing a bit about that one but we do have a month to move everything and take our time to get it organized.

5) Right after our move we have V's birthday.

6) Geekdad's still unemployed, we're looking and looking but no one in our small town's got openings in his field so we're looking into loans for school and working on getting him certified in a few different areas. We're trying not to get too stressed and use this instead as a time to get some new training and change the way we do things a bit.

So yeah, I'm a bit overwhelmed and frazzled, trying to stay optimistic and positive but it's hard some days. Can't wait for life to settle back down into a rhythm.

Little Sunday Secrets

1) I live in the south but can't stand typical southern food (cornbread, fried ochra, collards...) no thank you.

2) Country music is growing on me. I still can't stand the tear in my beer, my dog got run over and my wife ran away with my truck kind of country music but the upbeat songs are growing on me.

3) I love watching my hubby cook, he's such a big geek in the kitchen, wanting to try everything so meals are always interesting and sometimes absolutely wonderful.

4) I secretly think it's adorable when A. gets mad at me. He likes to stomp his little foot and pout with his bottom lip out.

5) I feel so cooped up lately. I just realized today that I haven't been outside the house in over three weeks. Ugh calgon take me away and while you're at it take this horrible back pain away too... or magically drop off a chiropractor that will work for food...

6) I've been watching Torchwood alot lately but I have to admit that I think Jack could do with someone cuter then Ianto. Just sayin'

7) I finally gave in and watched Twilight. It wasn't too bad, got me interested enough to read the books which I usually prefer over the movies. So I've settled down and started reading the series.

8) I have a craft addiction. There's so many projects I want to do but never seem to have the time or money to do them. Doesn't stop me from wanting to be creative. -.- If I won the lottery I'd have one hellacious craft room.

9) I'm secretly craving some Chinese but will end up making burgers and fries because I promised the kids yesterday that they could pick dinner tonight.

10) I'm waiting for life to get back to normal. Geekdad's still on the job hunt and our savings are slowly going down. I'm slowly spazzing about that, just wishing things would settle out soon. (Preferably before I have a heart attack or chew my fingers to nubs.)

So what are your little Sunday secrets?

7am comes way too early

It's a rainy, blah type of day today. The monkeys have been up since 3:30 thanks to the deafening thunder we had. Scared the crap outta me this morning too, I was dozing off when BOOOM!! I almost fell out of bed which would have made a much better blog post lol. Although the sad part is that it would have been like those old "I've fallen and I can't get up" commercials. I've had horrible sciatica the past two weeks due to a herniated disk so I could have been down there for awhile unless I found something down there to throw at Geekdad to wake him up.

So while it is a dreary, rainy day I'm thankful I'm not still on the floor.

See! I'm being optimistic. A whole hour of quiet has been achieved in our house. Hell hath frozen over, pigs are flying and any minute now it really will rain down cats and dogs.

Our house is never quiet.

Ever.

But that got me thinking... if pigs really did fly they'd have to have HUGE wings. I mean like medieval type dragon wings (not the small chinese ones) HUGE freakin wings to hold up all that bacon.... These aren't cute little baby pigs flying, I'm talking the whole hog here.

And then think about it... if they ever got hit by lightening while they were flying we'd have some nice charred pork dropping in on us. It might be just what we need to help feed the world, just a bunch of flying pigs with cadillac sized wings and a lightening storm.

Yes this is what I do when it's quiet around here. (and I was shopping for some weird things) I'll explain later*

I came across this review of an overpriced spa pillow, I used to have one similar and definitely have to agree:

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful:
1 out of 5 stars
I feel like such a little sucker., January 13, 2009
By G. Ferrandi (Brooklyn, NY)

Want to know what the secret to the "memory foam" this project boasts? Some of the "wicking" technology so prevalent in sports gear, perhaps? Or the stuff that makes the liquid disappear in diapers? Or the magic of those special "wings" in maxipads, for crap sake? Nope. It's a big ole sponge. It's a big ole sponge in a terry cloth cover. Terry cloth - which is commonly understood to be the sponge of the fabric world - wrapped around a big ole sponge. This thing soaks up about 5 pounds of bath water immediately and then drags those two desperate little suction cups that were supposed to hold it perched in place down to their watery grave. The poor little suckers didn't have a chance. And even if one of them does manage to hang on, the big ole sponge-wrapped-in-pseudosponge just slips off of it like a family-sized loaf of so much wet bread.

That was Sunday. Now it's Tuesday night and the loaf of bread slumped in my empty bathtub is just as wet, but really, really cold. Cold and wet and slumpy in the bottom of the tub. A real "Calgon, take me away" kind of allure... Want to know the secret to the "dry" in the "Microdry" this project boasts? Yeah. Me, too.

If you're looking for a gift for someone you just don't like this would be perfect but for anyone else, steer clear.

* In other news I was originally shopping for a tazer and a bath stopper lol an odd combination (and I definitely wouldn't recommend them together) but alas they are both becoming necessities in the geek household.

We've had to economize this year, meaning we only have one car that hubby uses to get to work so I don't have a car to use to pick up the kids from the bus. I don't mind the walk to the bus at all, but feel a bit weird standing there for sometimes up to 30 minutes. It's a pretty safe neighborhood, but still I just wanted something to give me an extra bit of security. I'd rather be safe then sorry.

And the bath stopper is just pure selfishness on my part ^^ I do enjoy a nice soak and a good book. I can pop this one on when I want a bit more water to soak in.

Have a safe and beautiful day!

Slowing down & savoring the moments

You know those days where you wish time would just stop so you could savor every moment. It's also the only song the kids are addicted to lately. Nothing better to cure the summer blues then hearing your three year old sing "Won't you take me to Funkytown" and then wiggle his hips and jump around.

Summer's dragging on with hot temps and fussy kids that just want to get out in the sunshine and play. Only problem there is that we don't exactly have a yard (can you say apartment hell?) and trips to the park (15 minutes from here) just isn't happening every day. So thank goodness for the wii. I can run their whiny little butts ragged before bedtime and they enjoy it. ^^

Other then playing lots of wii things have been quiet in our house. We've been surviving the heat and enjoying summer. We even made it to the parade on the 4th and baked in the sun for two hours but it was a blast and the kids got candy thrown at them so they were thrilled. We followed that up with an afternoon siesta and then a cookout at the inlaws. It was a long day but a good one.

We've also been on a health kick this summer, keeping track of portion sizes, calories, getting the right amount of vitamins & nutrients and working on having more energy and feeling better. We've also unplugged a bit (hence the absence of twitter and blogger lately) and have been working on de-stressing. So far so good, we have always been pretty healthy eaters, always cooking at home with good ingredients but now we're just balancing things out more as the kids get a little older.

We've been balancing that out with a 20 minute walk in the evenings just to get out a bit. Things were going great until the sciatic pain kicked in but I had a trip to the chiro this morning and hopefully in a few days things will be right as rain again and I can get back on track.

Just with making the few simple changes we have I've already noticed a difference in my energy, sleep habits and even the waistline. We started this at the beginning of June and without any heavy workouts, (just our evening walk) I've lost 3lbs and a total of 8 inches overall (hips, waist, thighs, etc.) I'm thinking about kicking it up a notch in July once the sciatic problem is back in line. Can't wait to see if I can get rid of a little more excess baggage ;)

I do have to say that I really miss twitter and blogging, even if I do ramble on about nothing most of the time. It's my way of connecting and relieving a bit of stress so I'm going to try to kick myself into a better mood and blog a bit more. I also need to take more pictures! Geez, I need a big kick. I haven't taken a single pic through the month of June and the beginning of July so instead of posting a pic to go with this post I'll quietly slip out the backdoor and leave you lot with this song from Emiliana Torrini.

Hello interwebs I pink puffy heart you.

Job hunting resources

We've recently been scouring the web and newspapers in search of a job for Geekdad and I just wanted to share a few quick resources that might come in handy for any one in the same situation.

Indeed.com was a huge help for us, it's a job search engine that combines all the major job site listings into one place.

Also if you're a Microsoft Word or Publisher user like I am head over to Microsoft Office Online for free resume layouts to get you started.

Geekwarmers

I had a bit of extra time this week and finished this scarf I've been working on. It's a ladder pattern, an open weave that I've been wanting to try. I found a fun ribbon yarn (yarn bee's Topkapi yarn) and combined it with a warm homespun and I'm in love with this one, it's got a little shine to it when the ribbon catches the light and it's soft and warm.

This one is definitely a winter scarf so I think I'll be making more of these as gifts for Christmas this year (in colors to suit the recipient), combined with some home made tags and paper I think they'll be a hit and definitely affordable to make.

Here's the wrapping pattern, it's a breeze with a long knitting board.

Going to try a variation with some lighter yarns (hopefully some blues and greens) for something breezy for summer.

I'm Free!

Wow has it really been almost a month since I've posted? Time's gotten away from me. If I'm honest I've been in a funk and didn't want to bore anyone with my funk-ness.

Life has smacked us in the face lately with the good and the not so good. Geekdad's finished his physical therapy & is wrapping up his work comp. His arm's back to 90% so it's pretty close and with more work they think it'll be back to 100% in the future. So we're just waiting on the settlement paperwork to go through.

We've been scouring the job market but with months of physical therapy (and him still being on work comp) we haven't been able to actively pursue anything. We do have some leads in mind though and hopefully within a few days we can submit some applications. He's been home on work comp since October so it's been awhile and it'll take some adjustment to get back into the swing of things.

On the positive side I'll be glad when he gets back to work. I love the geek but after months of 24/7 lol it's time for a little space. I can get back into my routine again as well and I'm looking forward to that. I'm hoping to spend a bit more time taking pictures this summer and doing a few crafty things like sculpting and knitting more.

I've also decided to step back from work. It's been a rough decision for me but with the stress lately I just want some time to spend with the family. The extra money from me working right now would be nice but Geekdad and I talked about just buckling down more and riding it out. We'd rather be on a tight budget and happy enjoying the things we have then adding more stress and health issues.

So now that he's getting back to work I guess it's my turn to take time off and get better. I've been stressed and run down lately and every little bug that comes near me gets me sick. So I'll be spending the summer detoxing and working on eating better and getting back into a workout routine. Getting healthy, getting a handle on the bloodpressure and spending time with my geeks.

All in all it sounds wonderful, but I have to admit there's guilt involved. I feel like I should be doing more since things are so tight but for now I have to just say fuck it. Screw working long hours, dealing with server problems, picky clients and coding headaches.

I'm free!

In love with little Hollie

V's just in love with this little girl. 10 year old Hollie Steel on Britain's Got Talent. I mean imagine if you were a blond vampire... "Is that blood in your hair? ... no no it's just ketchup from lunch..."

Reason 2: We have the quick temper. Annoying person? Hello food

Reason 3: Pale skin? We haz it. Forget the dark haired goth girls, redheads are where it's at. I mean who else already cringes when the sun comes out. We turn into strawberry poptarts if we're left in the sun too long, (all red and flaky)

Ok so why am I listing reasons redheads would make good vampires? Well it's because it's already getting way to hot for April. I mean seriously if it's already pushing 90 degrees in April that does not bode well for the latter summer months.

I've never been a fan of the heat, it's too hot, too sweaty, too sunburny, too... just plain evil. Give me a cool, dark place and I'd be in heaven. (hence the thinking about why redheads would make good vamps)

So it's the beginning of May and already I'm dreaming of running off to Alaska or Canada or becoming a Kiwi... I'm not picky, I'm just ready to get the heck outta dodge before my skin melts off.

But it will have to remain a pipe dream for awhile. The schools here are wonderful and the family's here so it's another year of Georgia heat for me.

Guess it's already time to break out the popcicles. If I'm honest it was a great big pain in the butt. I used a converted wordpress theme but it had so many ad spaces in it. Yuck. So I took out the ads, added in some graphics to brighten it up some more and tada! I have a bright page and a headache but by tomorrow I'll be in love. (that's after some excedrin and sleep)

Right now the only way to comment is to click the post title and comment through the main post page. It's another annoying thing that I'm working on fixing. I miss my good old easy "Comments" link. But until I figure out that bit of coding you'll have to do things the hard way or as my mom would say you have to go around your ass to get to your elbow. (oh yes, so elegant. lol actually I think I can hear her now saying "Oh my stars! I can't believe you just posted that")

It's on days like this that I regret not taking coding classes but I always got distracted by pretty pictures. lol

Have a fabulous week geeksters!

Geek Snippet

Word of warning:

If you have DirectTV and do a guide search for Kipper for your little ones to watch don't be lazy and just type in "ki" and definitely don't allow your seven year old that wants to read everything watch you do it.

I made the mistake of being in a hurry, in the middle of making dinner I quickly entered "Ki" and was planning on scrolling to Kipper... well above Kipper on the list you'll find Kinky Bitches 4, Kinky Dress up Dolls, Kinky Asian sluts 1... the list goes on.

Ummm, yeah, an interesting explanation followed.

I'll never be a lazy guide searcher again.

A short geek week in review...

Geekdad got the back patio cleared off for optimal relaxing, I got near a pair of scissors & added some new layers to my 'do, we got three new goldfish and our flowers started blooming.

1. Geek relaxing, 2. New Layers, 3. Larry, Moe & Curly,
4. Geraniums, 5. Petunias, 6. Patio Rose

Tired of the hiding

Things have really started to aggravate me lately. I'm not sure exactly when it started but it's here now. Full blown pissed offishness at doctors, health, you name it.

I started back to blogging with the idea that I'd blog anonymously. I'd write about fluff and skirt around the things that matter to me cause the whole world didn't need to know my life. But I've been missing the old days when I was the Barefoot Mama. Some of you might remember me, I used to blog about life, my family, and myself and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But thanks to surgery and bills out the wazoo we had to get rid of additional expenses like the internet so I was out of the blog loop for quite awhile. When I came back the Barefoot name had been taken by someone else. So I figured I'd go by the next thing that described me - Geekmom. Cause I'm a geek with glasses, in love with all things computers, tech, tv, etc. and I'm a mom. Duh :p

Geekbloggers was born because at the time Geekdad wanted to blog with me but he'd much rather be living life then sitting here writing about it. So I'm the lone Geekblogger. I keep the name to aggravate him lol and he reads all the postings (most of the time standing over my shoulder) He's the silent geekblogger.

But lately issues have come up that I want to write about and it will set me out of my anonymous zone and out of my comfort zone if I'm honest.

Maddie's passing got me motivated, I wanted to jump up and walk like everyone else... then the depression hit and then it turned into anger and motivation. I've had health issues through my three pregnancies and to this day have high blood pressure that never went away after the last bout of preeclampsia. In addition to that I've been on steroids for years for a tumor behind my right eye. Anyone that's been on steroids knows that if you take them long enough you gain weight. So it's been a constant struggle. I've gained weight and between that and the bloodpressure I don't get the chance to do anywhere near what I used to.

But the good news came a few weeks ago when the doctor said that we could stop the steroids and try an alternative treatment. So after weening off the prednisone, I'm free of that burden. Now I'm in the process of getting back to me. I never post new pictures because I miss my old self, I'm horribly unhappy with me now. So you'll see bits and pieces of my old life, cropped and photoshopped until I can stand them. But that's about to change.

I'll be taking more pics and enjoying things more. I've made the decision to document the process of getting back to me. I want to be able to look back and see the change. To use it as motivation.

I've been monitoring my bloodpressure daily and finally have enough information for the doctors to do something about it. So with the medicine I'll be able to get back into my routine and get back to walking. I feel like a weight's been lifted. Maddie was the motivator, she made me want to confront the doctors and get something done so that if there's a benefit I want to walk for dammit I'll be there with bells on.

This is the first step. One of many. I feel like it's the first day of school all over again. Scared and excited all wrapped up into one.

Baby steps...

Next time you'll see me in one of these crowds along with these wonderful people

Teddybear hats for Thalon

Shortly after I heard the news about Maddie I heard about a little boy named Thalon, he was another beautiful little soul that will be missed. I wanted to do something to remember him as well as Maddie so I decided to make little boy hats to donate along with the Maddie hats.

So here's the hat I'll be using for the boys, a little teddybear ear hat. I'm going to fine tune it a bit (and trim the funfur on the brim, it's a bit long for around the face) and then I'll post a pattern & walkthrough on how to make these for anyone interested. I'm a beginning knitter so they are super easy to make!

Now I just need to make the remembrance tags with Maddie & Thalon's stories on them and get to work knitting more. :)

Purple hats for Maddie

I spent the afternoon thinking about Maddie and what I could do to help. Due to my high blood pressure and current health I'm unable to complete a walk but I can knit. So I packed the kids up and we headed to the local yarn store. I found a few purple yarns to try out and after a few hours my Maddie hat was born. I didn't have a little one to try it on so V's favorite bear stepped up to the task.

I'll be donating these Maddie hats to the local hospital's NICU for new parents with preemies and sending them to the local March of Dimes headquarters. They'll keep a little one warm and help parents smile through that troubling time. It's not much, but it's something I can do.

Remembering Maddie

I've been reading over the last few days of a beautiful little girl named Maddie, if you're a blog mom you've probably seen the information around the blogosphere or on twitter. People are going purple to support the March of Dimes and Maddie's family.

April 7, 2009
It breaks my heart to have to share this news with you, but sweet, beautiful Maddie passed away today. That’s all I know right now, but as soon as I have more information I will share it with you.

Heather and Mike have asked that in lieu of flowers you contribute to the March of Dimes in memory of Madeline Alice Spohr.

For the full story and more about Maddie read on...

People around the country are organizing teams to walk in Maddie’s honor at their upcoming March of Dimes Walks. It is so easy for you to join in. Just sign up with the team close to you and go walk that day. Head over here for more information on the walks.

To support Maddie and the march the Geek blog has gone purple. In addition I've also created a new Maddie button and twitter background so you can easily join in and show support.

To use the twitter background click the preview below to view the full size, save the large image to your computer and upload to twitter

If you'd like to spread the word and twitter about Maddie use the #Maddie hashtag to make your tweets easy to search for.

Happy Easter

The appetizers are made, clothes are pressed, baskets are filled, eggs are hidden...
bring it on bunny, this mama's ready!

Have a safe and happy easter!

Tell Me Thursday - New Haircut story

I know I'm a few days behind, it's about noon on Saturday and I'm just now catching up with things. lol I suck at scheduling, but it's hard when you have three little ones that demand attention with all the cute things they do.

So anyway, I'm getting off track here...

Tell me Thursday is the chance for us bloggers to tell the stories behind our Wordless Wednesday posts. It's a great idea to discover the stories behind your favorite pictures.

Here's the story behind "New Haircut, Still a Ham"

Geekdad and the boys all went out to get haircuts this past week. They decided to make it a boys day out and I was sitting at home nervous... my little guy had never had a haircut (and he had the softest hair with curls in the back...) but he decided he wanted one just like his brother so off they went to the barber.

It was a huge change to see when they came back, my little toddler was looking like such a boy! I'm sad to see the curls go, but he's so proud of his haircut that I can't help but smile.

Here's the boys together, they were laying in the floor watching tv when I walked in the livingroom and L was showing A how to comb his hair. (lol and telling him that he can spike it up a bit in the front when he gets older)

The Wordless Wednesday picture was A telling me that he didn't have anymore hair behind his ears and they feel funny now.

So it's official, I've got a little boy now, he's growing up way too fast.
