Before At&t launches the next generation BlackBerry Bold 9700, they will be releasing an updated color to the existing Bold; yes, pearly white. We’ve seen other BlackBerry devices released in white, but the Bold in white is not my forte. If you are so inclined to use your upgrade eligibility on the white BlackBerry Bold (instead of waiting a week for the 9700) you will be able to pickup your phone on October 18 in select At&t retail stores for $200 after all applicable rebates and instant discounts.

As for what’s new in BlackBerry Messenger 5.0, here’s the quick summary:

Recap of New Features:
• Enhanced SMS -Allows for a conversational chat-like user experience with a single contact list for the most personal mobile-to-mobile communications
• Note: BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 and later is required for the SMS functionality.
• Avatars – Users can choose a picture from the BlackBerry Smartphone gallery and save it as their personal avatar, which will be seen by their contacts. They can also view other avatars in the contact list and zoom in on the avatars of contacts participating in a conversation by selecting “View participants.”
• Large Media File Transfer – Users can send/receive large file transfers up to 6 megabytes for pictures, files and audio.
• Note: BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 is required to receive large media files.
• Enhanced Group Functionality – Allows for the ability to update, share & communicate with a subset community.
• Bar-code Identity – A user can add a contact to the BlackBerry Messenger contact list by displaying a 2-dimensional bar code that invitees can capture with their device cameras.
• Reliable Contact Backup and Restore – Contacts are backed-up on a server and do not require the need for BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

* Note: While BBM 5.0 will definitely work on official releases of OS 5.0, we’re not sure yet as I post this if it will work on previously leaked versions of OS 5.0. Be sure to report back in the comments if you’re having success or not, and back up your BBM contacts before upgrading. *

RIM today announced they are working together to bring Adobe Flash Player support to the BlackBerry platform

RIM, the company behind BlackBerry’s wireless platform, including email and touchscreen technologies, is joining Adobe’s Open Screen Project, a 50-organization-members-strong organization that aims to promote better apps for richer mobile, television, and desktop browsing experiences for users.

With this announcement, 19 out of the top 20 mobile handset manufacturers are now collaborating with Adobe to integrate Flash technology into their devices.

LOS ANGELES – Oct. 5, 2009 - At Adobe MAX, Adobe’s worldwide developer conference, Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq:RIMM; TSX:RIM) today announced they are working together to bring Adobe Flash Player support to the BlackBerry platform. RIM is joining the Open Screen Project, a broad initiative dedicated to enabling standalone applications and richer Web browsing across mobile phones, televisions, desktops and other consumer electronic devices through the Adobe Flash Platform. The collaboration is expected to bring the full Flash Player browser runtime to BlackBerry smartphones.

“As an industry leader for innovative smartphones and wireless solutions, RIM delivers superior mobile user experiences to customers around the world,” said David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president, Flash Platform Business Unit at Adobe. “It’s a natural fit for both companies to work together to bring Flash technology based video and Web content to BlackBerry smartphone users.”

If you believe the rumors, RIM is developing a BlackBerry Watch that will be the center for all your notifications. It will work via Bluetooth and give you heads up on email, sms, Facebook, etc. At this point it is a rumor, and the picture is just a mock up but apparently one of the VPs let it slip that RIM was working on this thing at WES 2009.

A new release of the WordPress for BlackBerry application has been released. The most requested feature has been added. BIS support via the BIS-B connection layer.
In addition to BIS support, the new beta includes the following:

• Added support for the “more” tag in both pages and posts
• Tweaks to the UI based on user feedback
• Most error messages are now localized
• App now work even when the device memory is set to “encryption mode on”
