Partnership Will Relocate Conference to Featherstone Arts Center

After concerns arose last week about noise and crowding, a leadership development conference planned for early June in Oak Bluffs will change venues.

“To accommodate a much larger-than-expected group, we will relocate the conference to the Featherstone Center for the Arts,” Sean Findlen, a spokesman for The Partnership Inc., wrote in an e-mail to the Gazette.

Tisbury's Old Fire Station Comes Down

The walls came down on the old Tisbury fire station on Beach street in Vineyard Haven Wednesday morning. So did the roof.

Town crews did the work as the first part of the demolition project, Tisbury town administrator John (Jay) Grande said.

“It’s very critical that we at least get phase one done and get down to the [cement] slab,” he said. In June, the slab will be removed and the space will be graded and prepared for a temporary gravel parking lot.

As the spring sports regular season draws to a close, three teams have qualified for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association postseason tournament: boys' and girls' tennis and girls' softball. A number of track athletes have also qualified for competition in the annual division four state meet.

A West Tisbury special town meeting will be rescheduled for the fall after failing to gather a quorum Tuesday. A scant 60 voters turned out for the meeting; 122 are needed to convene a town meeting.

A Vineyard Haven store that caters to the Island Brazilian community is getting a makeover.

Mara Santos, a West Tisbury resident, is the new manager of Island Star, a convenience store located at 25 Beach Road in Vineyard Haven.

“I hope to have everything ready for a grand opening on May 26,” she said. “I want to earn the trust of new customers.”

Mrs. Santos has lived on the Vineyard since 1999. She has worked as a caregiver, raised a daughter and ran a cleaning business.

Wasque Swimming Beach to Open for Summer

The beach at Wasque Reservation, closed to swimmers and fishermen for about a year and a half because of dangerous conditions, will likely be open for swimming and fishing this summer, the Vineyard superintendent for The Trustees of Reservations said.

Plans for a large addition to a church off the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Oak Bluffs have spurred concerns from neighbors for the second time in five years. At a public hearing before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission Thursday, commissioners and members of the public heard a proposal from Alliance Community Church to build an addition to the existing 7,000 square-foot building.
