Yoga Fire, a European coincidence

Getting to be nominated to be the best band in Europe for MTV last year was arguably a twist of fate for the rock band Yoga Fire.
Alis, bassist, recalls that before entering to the world of the guitars and drums the band was a hip-hop quartet called Klovner i Kamp. "One day we had an invitation for a tribute to rock legend in Norway. We thought it was best tribute to him like a rock band, but none of us had done it before, so it sounded horrible", says Yoga Fire bassist (www.yogafire.no).
From that presentation, four years passed. "When we started, we played punk because it was all we could do. We had to play three-chord songs, then the boys improved in their instruments and we could do something more sophisticated", says Alis.
Yoga Fire last year won the award for best artist in their country, Norway, and were nominated for best band in the Old Continent. However, there is a long way to achieve worldwide fame. "Over the past four years we had to pay for our videos and records. Just this summer we could make some money, but for the past, we can say it was a hobby", says the musician.
Singing in Norwegian can also mean a barrier on their way to the global popularity, but they feel that otherwise, their songs would not be the same. "We were the first rap group in singing Norwegian and I think that was part of our success. With the rock we made songs in English but we felt that we expressed to us as we wanted and returned to Norway. We believe that is good in our country, but we may never be worldwide famous".
Alis describes his band with influences of White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age and Turbonegro. "But while we are in a rock band, also continue to hear hip hop", he adds.
Due to its origin of hip hop and quirky presentations, the press came to pigeonhole into a false group. However, the award and the nomination at the MTV Europe Music Awards gave them credibility. "It was very important to us because journalists thought they were doing as a joke, but things changed", says Alis.
Currently the group is recording its next album and planning a tour of Europe and the United States. "Do not try to be arrogant or act as super stars. We feel that we are a group of people who do what to have fun", he conclude Alis.

Last year was Denmark. Bare agreements and more doubts were in the air in the press that gave coverage to the COP15 in Copenhagen. The Convention on Climate Change did not get the arrangements in gas emissions that would have celebrated, among other things. In Cancun, priority seems to be the water.
"This year will be very important for water. I think the issue is being addressed because it is so essential to the matter of climate change which we live", says Vidal Garza Cantu, director of the FEMSA Foundation.
The Convention on Climate Change United Nations will take place from November 29 to December 10 in Cancun, so as the host country, Mexico is expected to have interesting proposals.
"I expect a lot of discussion around the theme of water and wait for the coming year there is more awareness and more organizations to join, because the issue affects us all", said the manager of the Mexican company.
Despite the crisis, no budget change

Donkeyboy, celebrities without fame in the north of the world

Donkeyboy story of success is as simple as an idea that one day occurred to them: "We went to England to visit the offices of Warner, but we could not even enter the building. We returned to Norway and said we had contacts in England and that served to open our doors and get a contract", talked Cato Sundberg, guitarist of the group.
From the moment they released their first single, they got into the Scandinavian pop mainstream. The band A-ha took them to the O2 Arena to open their presentations to the public in London. Even thought their two singles, "Ambitions" and "Sometimes", reached the peaks of the charts, fame form them is unknown in their native Norway.
"People sometimes recognize you on the street and many go to our shows, but fame is not what we see on MTV or in America. People in Norway are colder and it is difficult that someone come closer to us and screams", says Peter Michelsen guitarist of the group from Drammen.
Their music refers to 80s pop sound in Europe. Michelsen describes their influences as bands with synthesizers, including A-Ha, Fleetwood Mac and Alphaville. They feel identified with contemporary bands such as The Killers and Phoenix.
The European, a competitive market
Being in a country of five million people not makes it easier to succeed. "There are many groups in America and England that sound in Norway, therefore we compete with music from around the world," says Peter Michelsen. "The big bands sing in English in our country, so is the most common", he said regarding his decision to sing in that language.
But it is not only a matter of language, but also of image. For their first single, Ambitions, they first made a video for the local market. Given the success, Warner decided to launch a new international video for the global market. "In the first video we decided to show things like recovering from a disease and we believe that this was a Norwegian video. When we went to Britain, they wanted a happier video for the international market”, Cato Sundberg recalled.
Social network and the world
As many bands around the world, create community social networks have found it beneficial. Donkeyboy accumulated 1.4 million views on YouTube and more than 56,000 fans on Facebook. "We have responses from different countries. People tell us they heard our songs and they are a hit on your campus or local radio", said Michelsen.

12 months ago, water scarce in Mexico. There was talk that the fluid pipes up to twice the price of its service and the lack of it in various colonies of Mexico City. But according to Vidal Garza Cantu, director of the FEMSA Foundation, the problem is not lack of fluid, is the way the use we give it and how is distributed. "The water today is the same as it has been for hundreds of years. In Mexico, there is little water available for human use and development of the industry", said the manager.
An average Mexican citizen can consume liquid 3,900 cubic meters annually, although the difference between states is abysmal. "Mexico's challenge is to find a balance, because although in some southern states the abundance of water makes these 3,900 cubic meters 10 times, in the north, Nuevo Leon and Sonora the average of consumption is only 2,000”.
"The other big challenge is how to make the field in the agricultural sector can reduce the amount of water and have same or better results to which they have now," adds to the problem of fluid consumption.
Given this concern, they created the Water Center for Latin America and the Caribbean, which serve as partners FEMSA, the Tec of Monterrey and the Inter-American Development Bank and have programs for the sustainable use of the liquid. "We have lead the way in this activity so we put a very formal organizations. What has happened is that people come to us. After Chiapas, it approached the government of Tabasco. The situation of Mexico City with respect to the environment is perturbing, however, Marco Ivan Escotto, Professor of Philosophy and Business of IPADE, calls good actions implemented by local government regarding the sustainable issue. "I feel like going in the right direction. There is much to do but the issue of bicycles and habits are important program. The important thing is that they have continuity", he says.
According to the specialist, "social interaction reduces the stress of violence." In the same way, Ivan Escotto coincides with warnings that made the past year in terms of water quality and the capital territory. "If we do not act in this sense, the theme will be that we have cities that are not sustainable," concludes.

Dick el Demasiado, without categories

"The categories for me are a disease. My music does not fit into them, "says Dick el Demasiado, creator of what the music industry called the experimental cumbia.
Yes, classify the product of this musician would be difficult.
He was part of a soundtrack for a film about the maras, has recorded an album in the cold of Russia and played at the home of Pablo Neruda.
The versatility of this musician keeps you in the territory of the experimental.
Dutchman by birth, Dick el Demasiado has lived in over 20 countries, several of them in Latin America, where he caught what is his greatest musical influence, the cumbia.
The origin
"La cumbia in Argentina, which was where I lived for six to 12 years, despite sounding like a beautiful music, was considered for the lower class," recalls Dick who exceeds 50 years old. "The Argentines like to emulate Europe and did not want to be associated with cumbia," he added.
Experimentation
But Dick el Demasiado began working around this genre in which he incorporated various sounds from many different sources, such as toys or machines in his native Holland.
Europe is not their market.

Sundance and Stockholm to taste gang
More than a year ago, a song by Dick el Demasiado sounded in different parts of the world thanks to a winning film, "Sin Nombre".
The film, which deals with the Mara Salvatrucha, was income of $ 2.5 million and won awards at various festivals such as Sundance and Stockholm.
"The film begins with a song of mine, 'The weak and the red,'" describes the musician.
"For me it is beautiful and amazing that many people in gangs or who want to look like them come to me for that film," he said.
A musician with miles
Dick el Denasiado has performed across America, Japan and some parts of Europe. There are two presentations that he remembers fondly.
"Pablo Neruda had several houses, two in Chile, a popular but there is another that has a communist party, and there are a replica of an amphitheater of García Lorca's home and I did a festival there," he recalled.
Moreover, in Argentina he presented in a prison. "I was invited and attended".
Dick now has two albums for sale on its Web site, dickeldemasiado.com, but several others scattered around various sites.

Social responsibility, rather than charity

In the woods of Santa Rosa de Lima, Guanajuato, México, about 4,000 people live. Without industry and only subsistence activities a social responsibility project would look like a charity. However, it is not and on the other hand, people of the village have been involved in a chain of benefits that comes even to restaurants in Mexico City.
"In Mexico there is the issue of Toks, who sought and found suppliers in Guanajuato a community that makes jams, tested and was of such quality that competed with the premium ones. For that community, their lives changed, said Ivan Escotto, professor of Philosophy and Enterprise at the IPADE.
The business is not in struggle with social responsibility. "Toks joined this community to its supply chain and there was a better quality of life, that is a positive impact". For its part, the restaurant chain got a domestic supplier at a competitive price.
According to the professor at the IPADE, most successful companies are those that incorporate social impact projects in its operation. "It's a win-win between society and business," he says.
Breaking with paradigms wrong target
"There are many myths regarding social responsibility," says the professor at IPADE. Since the products are more expensive to the "double-sided business”, the community has sometimes punished these activities.
For this reason, one of the basics to differentiate between companies that do their job in this area, and those that only appear in media for “the picture”, is "when there is an awareness of the impact on society, simply from recruitment". "Being socially responsible is in all your actions as a company, but if you are aware of the effects not only you become responsible, looking for win-win to benefit society," reaffirms the specialist.
Not a charity
Philanthropy is sometimes confused with social responsibility. "Philanthropy is a sum of money to social causes, environmental, business or foundation", Escotto defined. Meanwhile, sustainable projects "help start a project that is of benefit to all sectors." The biggest difference is that the social responsibility projects seek to sustain themselves, while philanthropic actions depend on the situation of the company.
A look inside
"Every company is responsible for its actions and the effects to be taken", said Escotto Arroyo. For that reason, a project of social responsibility not only looks out. According to the academic, some of the internal points to consider are labor rights (quality of life for employees), working environment and compliance with laws, the lowest level of social responsibility. "The biggest conscientious is the general direction, which is where the initiatives are based", he concludes.

"In our presentation we do not take a political position, although we have one, we want to entertain our people and ultimately to leave them with a smile" say Jernej Savel, bassist electropop Croatian Lollobrigida, about their concerts.

Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, and in general the countries that made up the former Yugoslavia, are still in a period of transition and independence. So it is for the bands, which prefer to use the local language from English or French, even though they could open more doors in the European market.

"You can not succeed in your own country with another language, whatever the former Yugoslavia place you are, people like to hear their own language rather than to hear English", talk the bassist winner of last year's MTV Adria, which is composed markets of Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Macedonia.

The Croatian only has 7 million speakers in the world. The Slovenian, over 2 million. Singing in Croatian may also have other implications not so positive. "Sometimes people associate it with Russia and then say, here comes the Russian band, and Russia and Europe, they have not a great relationship," adds the bassist.

These are bands that are far from the famous Hollywood mainstream and take refuge in their nations, some, with just 20 years of independence. "There are bands in this region that if they were from the US, they would be known worldwide", said the Slovenian musician.

We need more women in politics. Or at least the figures of the heads of state say so. From the 192 states recognized by the United Nations, only in 13, are woman a main political character.

11 in Europe

Three of them came from Switzerland. Micheline Calmy-Rey, Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf and Doris Leuthard are members of the Swiss Federal Council.

Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of Lithuania. Her nickname is Iron Lady and it’s the first female head of state.

Roza Otunbayeva, President of Kyrgyzstani. On April 7, 2010, Otunbayeva was selected as head of a Kyrgyz interim government, following widespread rioting in Bishkek and the ousting of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. She is considered to be friendlier toward Moscow than to Washington.

Jadranka Kosor. She became Croatia's first female Prime Minister on July 6, 2009, after the resignation of former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader. Kosor has published four books, two of poetry and two related to the Croatian War of Independence.

Pratibha Devisingh Patil. She is the 12th and current President of the Republic of India and first woman to hold the office. She won the presidential election held on 19 July 2007 defeating her nearest rival Bhairon Singh Shekhawat . She has been in a lot of scandals like forgetting to salute to the Indian flag at a ceremonial reception for her in Mexico, having conversations with spirits of the dead, insulting remarks on Indian culture and tradition, and regular, expensive, state sponsored holiday trips with more than a dozen family members.

1 in Africa.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. She was elected President of Liberia in the 2005 presidential election and took office on 16 January 2006. A peace movement called Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace led to her election, making Liberia the first African nation with a female president. She was married to James Sirleaf when she was only 17 years old,[4] and then traveled to America in 1961 to continue her studies at the University of Colorado where she eventually earned a degree.

El dinero ya lo puso Pirma, falta que el gobierno socialista de dicho país acepte la jugosa oferta por $1,000,000 USD.

NOTA: La marca norcoreana quedo representada un poco antes de que empezará el mundial por ERKE, empresa china. Aunque una marca mexicana estuvo cerca de llevarsela. Gracias por sus comentarios.

María Arce y Paula Lugones se dieron a la tarea de narrar a 40 días de las elecciones presidenciales, el ambiente que se vivía en Estados Unidos. El trabajo por la mítica ruta 66 les hizo acreedoras del premio Rey de España en la categoría Periodismo Digital. El trabajo multimedia se basó en notas enviadas desde Estados Unidos, posts en un blog especial, videos, fotos y audios. El especial fue realizado y enviado íntegramente desde Estados Unidos.

Planeación.

¿Por qué la Ruta 66?

La Ruta 66 es también conocida como la calle principal de Estados Unidos. Interesante y funcional fue que la ruta comenzará en el estado nativo de Barack Obama, Illinois y atravesara Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Nuevo México, Arizona (estado del candidato John McCain) para terminar en California en un recorrido total de 3,939 kilómetros.

Origen.

Como editora jefe adjunta de la sección El Mundo de Clarín, Lugones ideó el proyecto de la Ruta 66 cuatro años antes mientras cubría la campaña presidencial estadounidense anterior. María Arce, Coordinadora editorial de Clarín.com, se sumó al proyecto.

Trabajo en equipo.

En la redacción de Clarín, Nicolás Lound programó todas las infografías que permitieron seguir la evolución de la intención de voto de Obama y McCain, y luego seguir el recuento. En Clarín Global, el equipo de Javier Elliot produjo la plataforma flash donde se publicaron los contenidos y sistematizaron la presentación de los envíos de Paula y María.

Stromae

Paul Van Haver, also known as Stromae, was born 25 years ago in Brussels and is becoming the revelation in Europe with his single Alors on Dance.

He decided to work for one year at a fast food restaurant to paid his studies in a private school.

Before his success, he broadcasted streaming videos where he explained his musical creations in the form of lessons called Lessons Stromae.

In 2009, he released the single Alors on dance, that has shock countries like France, Germany and Belgium. Lets listen to it.

BB Brunes

BB Brunes is rock band that form part of the new French rock scene.

The group's musical influences are punk and rock of the 1960s and 1970s, but also more current groups like The Strokes, Amy Winehouse, The Clash, or Ray Charles.

The group won the Victoires de la Musique 2009 in the category "Revelation Scene of the Year.

On November 16, 2009, the second album of BB Brunes, Nico Teen Love got to the market.

Die Atzen is form by Manny Marc and Frauenarzt.

Frauenarzt, is the stage name of a rapper from Berlin. He is known as a representative of the Miami bass with German lyrics. Many of his tracks have a strong 80s-Electro-dry character.

His performances are completed with extraordinary physical effort.

La mejor red para encontrar deportistas y famosos para estar al tanto de lo que hacen es Twitter. Y eso que apenas le están entrando, pero ya vemos varios ejemplos.

Después de ser usuario de twitter por un buen tiempo. Al principio no veía la utilidad de esto. Solo pensaba que tener una cuenta en twitter seria “casi” lo mismo que en otras redes sociales. Pero hoy me encuentro con una sorpresa, si sigo a la gente correcta, puedo enterarme de nuevos temas y noticias, mucho antes que cualquier canal de comunicación tradicional. Lo malo esque cada vez hay mas “gente correcta” por seguir y muchas veces perdemos de vista una avalancha de tweets.

Siendo una persona interesada en deportes me di a la tarea de buscar deportistas tuitteros.

Algo que me di cuenta es que hay más deportistas gringos tuiteando y la gran mayoría de estos son basquetbolistas.

Algunas ligas como la NBA ya prohibieron postear en Twitter 45 min antes de un partido de NBA, durante y hasta que termine la conferencia de prensa al final. Y si no preguntenle al @THE_REAL_SHAQ que ya tuvo algunos incidentes y hasta se deci que así se entero de que era nuevo jugador de los Cavs.

La más reciente fue prohibir el tuiteo a los deportistas olímpicos de invierno durante toda la contienda, el caso @Shaun_White (medallista de oro en snowboard halfpipe)

Me encontré con algunas sorpresas con deportistas mexicanos que nunca crei fueran a tener twitter como @cuauhtemocb10, o algunos que ya están en el retiro (@BetoGAspe o @GarciaPostigo).

El caso más ejemplar es el de @lancearmstrong ya es un viejo lobo de mar en Twitter. Sabe manejarlo muy bien, publica fotos exclusivas, que cualquier agencia de medios pagaría miles de dólares, y mantiene al tanto a todos sus admiradores. Hace ver a un gran atleta como una persona cuasi-común.

En la búsqueda de más deportistas me tope con muchas cuentas piratas (seguramente una o dos se colaron a mi lista). Ya que es bastante difícil todavía dar con las cuentas que son oficiales pero que todavía no tienen el sellito de Verifed Account, que Twitter otorga a las cuentas reales.

Hej Matematik

Hej Matematik, in English, “Hi Mathematics" is one of the most important bands in the Danish pop market.

The band consists in the Aqua-member Søren Rasted and his nephew Nicolaj Rasted. They won already the Danish Hit of the Year with the single Walkmand at Zulu Awards 2009.

In November of 2009, Hej Matematik released Party I Provinsen, the lead single of their second album Alt Går Op I 6.

Olivia Ruiz

From France, Olivia Ruiz is one of the most famous pop acts. For her second studio album La Femme Chocolat, Olivia Ruiz was recognized by the Victoires de la Musique as the Female Artist of the Year in 2007.

Olivia Ruiz wrote all the lyrics for her third studio album Miss Météores. The record topped the French and Walloon album charts in 2009.

PMMP

Finland, a hard rock country by tradition, brings us PMMP, band fronted by singers Paula Vesala and Mira Luoti.

PMMP started its career in summer 2003, with the hit Rus-ketus-raidat. Their second album Kovemmat kädet went gold in 2005.

They have been awarded because of the energy they present in their live shows.

The sisters Alissa and Ksusha Kosmos form KAMON!!! In Kiev, Ukraine in November 2007. The girls play a high-voltage electro music, which take them in 2009 to be nominated by MTV Ukraine for best act and then presented in Berlin in a show before the Europe Music Awards

Recién me encuentro en el aeropuerto de Cancún, luego de cinco días en Miami y más de siete meses de cobertura de la NFL. La de este fin de semana fue mi tercera oportunidad de cubrir el Super Bowl para la que ha sido mi casa laboral por más de cinco años y después de ir para arriba y para abajo siempre me gusta tomarme un tiempo y ver mi trabajo. Mi conclusión en esta ocasión es la misma de hace tres años. Amo lo que hago, lo disfruto y lo vivo.

Tener la experiencia de estar en un estadio de NFL es única. Pero también lo es trabajar en una edición cada día con gente que admiro, llegar a casa o caminar por las calles que más te gustan escuchando una buena canción.

Muchas veces por el paso del tiempo y el ritmo del trabajo nos olvidamos de cuando no teníamos un nombre y nos sentamos por primera vez en una computadora para redactar una nota. La emoción era única. Ver a Drew Brees, mariscal de campo de los Santos de Nueva Orleans, antes del partido del domingo, me despertó el Juan Pablo que llevo dentro. No el licenciado, el periodistas, el reportero o el amigo. Con esto quiero decir que no hay sentimiento semejante al sentirse vivo y aunque por más ridículo que parezca, muchas veces se nos olvida, lo dejamos de paso o no lo recordamos.

Aquel domingo 7 de febrero, que hoy se ve tan cercano pero en poco tiempo será cosa del pasado, escribí algo así en mi Twitter: “Les deseo lo mejor y espero cumplan sus sueños, yo estoy cumpliendo uno por tercera ocasión”. De verdad siento lo mismo que en ese momento y no es que sea alguien para dar buenos deseos pero de verdad, cada vez que alguien está motivado, inspira a los demás. Creo que la frase sería, “seamos una inspiración”. Creo que todos podemos ser un Drew Brees a nuestro modo, ¿no?

El éxodo haitiano

Haití no volverá a ser lo mismo. Pero para muchos, quizá sea mejor. Hundidos en la pobreza, los haitianos necesitaban un cambio, el cual llegó de forma trágica. Pero bien me decían algunos colegas, “lo peor aún está por llegar”.

La lucha por el suelo haitíano ya no queda sólo en manos de los que estaban ahí. Desde esta semana, Estados Unidos ha lanzado mensajes de intromisión, más allá de la ayuda que todas las naciones han llevado. No sería la primera vez.

Un viaje al pasado. En 1981 el Banco Mundial y la agencia desarrollo estadounidense US Aid iniciaron una estrategia de desarrollo conjunta para Haití, basada en las cadenas de montaje y la exportación agrícola. La US Aid pronosticó para Haití que la isla iba a convertirse en el Taiwan del Caribe. Fue un gran fracaso.

Hoy pocos tenemos memoria o conocimiento. Hasta hace una semana, no todos conocíamos la historia de Haití, pero hoy todos sabemos que sí su destino ya era sombrío, la luz se ve aún más lejos del túnel.
