Cuff Complex presents Gear Night tonight

For those not going to Red Dress Party tonight, Cuff Complex and DJ Matt Stands, will be hosting their monthly "Gear Night" event starting at 9pm, when the dance floor will open for socializing and demonstrations of leather gear. DJ Matt Stands will start the night spinning minimal but will move forward into electro, progressive and top 40 dance as the evening progresses.

This is a leather event and is open to everyone in the gay community, This event was created to encourage open mindedness and the freedom to express one's individuality and sexuality within the GLBTQ Community.

Well I am not so sure about the "L" part of that statement since cover for the ladies will be $15 instead of the $5 that the men will pay. I saw some sad faces last month so keep in mind that girls will pay the higher cover every third Saturday at Cuff.

On Saturday, Cuff Complex is open till 3am for dancing.

Seattle's Comeback at Chop Suey nominated for America's Best Party

It has been a popular monthly party for years in Seattle. The last Friday of every month is Comeback at Chop Suey. While the theme is 70's gay retro, the night attracts scenesters of all orientations and genders and features modern beats from an all-star lineup of resident DJs with Colby B, Ponyboy and DJ Fucking in the Streets along with top DJ guests and performers from around the country.

Paper Magazine is a New York City centric magazine covering gay pop-culture, fashion, the arts and nightlife. For their Fifth Annual Nightlife Awards, the are asking for readers to vote for America's Best Party and the nominees are:

Rain City Soccer Club will launch their very first calendar for 2010 on Friday November 20, 2009. They're throwing a party and you know soccer players really know how to party. They already have nearly a hundred people saying they are going to be there for sure and nearly two hundred say they might attend as well. This is just a prelude to the huge events that will be happening all over Seattle for the 14th Major League Soccer Cup Championship at Qwest Field on Sunday evening.

Why not start your weekend off by picking up an RCSC 2010 Calendar on Friday and party with hundreds of men and women in soccer shorts? Ok, maybe they won't be wearing soccer shorts but it should be fun anyway. Kimberley Locke will be at Red Dress Party on Saturday

There's been a flurry of ticket sales over the past few days for Seattle's Red Dress Party on Saturday November 21, 2009 as Value Village has had a massive run of men buying red dresses, however, many men have been hitting the local department stores in groups, much to the confusion of the sales staff. VIP tickets for Red Dress Party have already sold out but I hear that a few general admission $25 tickets still remain. The party opens at 9pm and goes until 3am with the Perry Twins and the fabulous DJ Joy.

As we mentioned on Tuesday, Kimberley Locke will be attending...

American Idol celeb, Kimberley Locke will be "crashing" the party. She won't be performing but she'll be hanging out and partying it up...she's a huge supporter of HIV/AIDS charities.

You probably remember that Kimberley came in 3rd place in the 2nd season of American Idol behind Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard.

Kimberley’s first single, from her first album, ONE LOVE, on Curb Records, “8th World Wonder” was the first song ever recorded by any American Idol winner or finalist to debut at #1 on the singles sales charts. Kimberley’s version of “Jingle Bells” had the highest charting debut week on the Adult Contemporary chart in 2006, debuting at #17. Even though hundreds of artists have recorded the song, Locke's recording was the first to ever to top the Billboard AC chart and to date, Kimberley is the only recording artist to ever have 3 #1 Billboard Christmas songs, in three consecutive years.

Kimberley has been active in many charities, particularity in the realm of HIV/AIDS. Kimberley’s first exposure to HIV/AIDS was through her work with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, which sent her on an 11 day trip through Africa. She then went on to work with other organizations such as Youth AIDS, The Davy Foundation, and Camp Heartland.
In recognition of her extensive charitable efforts as an HIV/AIDS activist, Kimberley was presented with the Red Ribbon award on November 9, 2007.

Seattle’s Red Dress Party is this Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the Naval Reserve Center South Lake Union. Doors open at 9pm and the party goes until 3:00am.

While the color red is commonly accepted as the international symbol of AIDS awareness, the Red Dress Party builds on that idea by encouraging all guests, despite age, gender or sexual orientation, to attend the event and wear a red dress. Red Dress is required; attitude optional!

This year the event welcomes back the Perry Twins and just announced DJ Joy will be opening for the Twins. Also, American Idol celeb, Kimberley Locke will be "crashing" the party. The classic Meet Me in St. Louis is at The Village Theatre

Review: Meet Me in St. Louis at The Village Theatre

For the first time, The Village Theatre is producing the classic play Meet Me In St. Louis. Director Steve Tomkins has a long history with The Village, directing and choreographing numerous other production including the most recent Chasing Nicolette. He is capably assisted by Music Director Tim Symons, whose last season holiday production of Beauty and the Beast won a Seattle Times Footlight Award.

This latest production is based upon the the 1944 MGM film starring the fabulous Judy Garland. It was a hit and one of the most popular films during World War II. And you can understand why, since it shows such a delightful family life and values that the war was being fought for and held special meaning for America. The film is still considered by many to be one of the best loved and top 100 films of all time.

The play takes place in St. Louis, Missouri in 1903 and moves through the seasons until 1904 when the St. Louis World's Fair opens. The Smith family, with mother, father, four daughters and one son, hold much anticipation as they look forward to the opening of the big event in St. Louis.

But this story is about the two oldest daughters falling in love and the upheavel which rocks the boat when their father needs to move to New York. This all is presented in beautiful words and songs by a delightful cast. The role of Esther Smith, performed by the talented Ryah Nixon, is marvelouse to watch.

The show stealer has to be Analiese Emerson Guettinger, who plays the youngest daughter Tootie. The timing and delivery of her lines is so believable. Her father indicates that she's not in school yet, hoping when she's old enough the school will accept her. But you can understand why it may be questionable since she's such a young little rascal.

The staging of this classic musical has all of the elements that work, from the large cast who sing some of the most enchanting songs ever written such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" to the rousing and foot tapping "The Trolley Song" and the well known "Meet Me in St. Louis." The dance number for "The Trolley Song" stands out as just one of the impressive numbers that is a treat for the audience. This turn of the century play is set in a very nice Victorian House, with a much used porch and a window seat set right next to the house.

Meet Me in St. Louis is a wonderful holiday outing for the whole family and plays at The Village Theatre's Francis J. Gaudette Theatre in Issaquah through January 3, 2010 and then up at Everett Performing Arts Center from January 8 - 31, 2010. Tickets start at just $17 and are 1/2 off for students 30 minutes prior to the show. Also, check out The Village Theatre's subscription night for "Young Professionals" called CURTAIN CALL. Seattle's Italian Cinema Festival features two gay films

SIFF's New Italian Cinema Festival runs November 17 - 21, 2009. Celebrating the rich cinematic tradition of Italy the event will bring eight of the country's newest directors and films to audiences in Seattle for their US debut. These eight films are the finest selections from the year's major European film festivals and will compete for the City of Florence Award.

Two of the eight films specifically address gay and lesbian themes: Sea Purple and Different From Whom?.

Sea Purple is a beautifully-shot film depicting the historical, social and religious climate for women and as well as gay rights in 19th century Sicily.

Angela (Valeria Solarino) finds herself attracted to her best friend Sara (Isabella Ragonese). As deep friendship turns to romantic passion, her strict quarry boss father demands that the relationship cease and that she marry one of his workers. Refusing, Angela is locked in a cellar until her father determines a potential way for them both to get what they want.

Director Donatella Maiorca as well as actor Valeria Solarino will be in attendance!

Playing Wednesday Nov 18 9:15pm at the SIFF Cinema, $10.

Different from Whom? has been compared to Milk in terms of addressing themes of political campaigning, gay rights, and partisan demographics.

In an unnamed Italian city, the current conservative mayor builds walls to stop crime. Piero (Luca Argentero) is more interested in building community – for gays and lesbians, in particular. When he is paired with a more family-focused woman as his deputy mayor, much conflict ensues. As opposites start attracting, however, Piero’s political ambitions – and his long-term relationship with Remo (Filippo Negro) – are threatened.

Po Dogs opens on Capitol Hill

Po Dogs officially opened for business this weekend on Capitol Hill. Owner Laura Olson might just revolutionize Seattle's nonchalant attitude about hot dogs, the mindset that they're only bought right outside sports stadiums and after shopping at Costco. These are not your average wieners, ranging in price from five to seven dollars.

Her menu features twelve signature gourmet hot dogs all on Macrina brioche buns, including the Deep Fried Danger Dog (bacon wrapped, deep fried), Texas Dog (Tillamook cheddar cheese, homemade onion crisps and mesquite BBQ sauce), Wasabi Egg roll Dog (deep fried roll wrapped dog, covered in a wasabi aioli) and the Dub’T Dog (crushed potato chips and cheese sauce) to name a few.

Customers can create their own made to order distinct hot dogs or choose from our internationally researched specialty dogs. From fresh mango, banana, bacon jam, sweet peppers or hot, our customers can choose from over 25 different toppings to make their hot dog unique, a taste that they can re-create whenever they stop by or make a brand new experience.

Things didn't start off well for Po Dogs two months ago when the landlord objected to the mural they were planning to paint on the outside wall.

Happy Hour is 4:30pm - 6:30pm which includes mini dog sliders for $4.97 and beer from two to three bucks. This new wiener joint recently had a soft opening and Capitol Hill Seattle was there.

The latest club rap sensation out of Canada, Thunderheist comes to Chop Suey on Thursday November 19, 2009 along with the indie synth-pop alternative rockers Winter Gloves (Montreal) and Seattle's own warm-up DJ to the stars Colby B.

Obama On My Mind in its Last Weekend!

For those who still question, is this the right time for a musical about Obama? The answer is YES! The musical takes place in an Obama Campaign office in smalltown America where a group of crazed Obama supporters are trying to raise money to help make Obama the next President of the U.S.A. Sadly though, Obama does not appear in this production.

The playwright Teddy Hayes, a U.S. native, moved to London 13 years ago, where the musical debuted in March of 2009. It sold out to houses all over London. The U.S. Premiere has had standing ovations every single performance. The fusion of Gospel, Jazz, Rock, and a little bit of Tango music can be found in this musical. It is not your typical Broadway-esque style of a musical, which several audience members who do not appreciate musicals, have actually stated that they truly enjoyed the music from the show.

The opening number is about the office finding out that Sarah Palin is McCain's Choice for VP. Which really sets the tone for the play. Its fun, energetic and uplifting. I would say that the highlights of the musical numbers are the comedic "Somebody Important" sung by Curtis Banks (Ron Davids), "Obama and Me" sung by the talented veteran of the Seattle stage Demene Hall, and Josephine Howell's amazing vocals of the title song "Obama On My Mind"

This show truly speaks to all audiences. It shows how despite our differences in society, how we can still come together as a community to make important things happen. The characters in the show are quite comical. Everything from the Hippie Astrologer Valerie (Rebecca Meneses), to the Money crazed fundraising antics of Peter played hysterically by Umeme. And let us not forget the sex crazed "little miss hot sauce" Martha who leads a seductive yet true to the point telephone seminar sung beautifully by Annie Jantzer. Ryan Blackwell's portrayal of Johnny, the flamboyant yet comedic gay boy working on the campaign, really brings out the attitude that is stereotypical, yet hysterically funny to watch, and his costumes, well you will have to see it for yourself.

The show runs this weekend from Thursday, Nov. 12th - Sunday Nov. 15th at 7:30pm with a Saturday Matinee at 2pm. It plays at the Langston Hughes Performing arts Center on 17th & Yesler (104 17th Ave. S. The infamous lesbian house party Heartbreak Hotel goes "club" tonight! DJ Joy and Lady Jane DJ, who were the original DJs, are again teaming up with two of the ladies that threw those parties (see The Stranger Party Crasher below) and taking them to Waid's near Seattle University (12th & Jefferson). They will be spinning Hip-Hop, Top 40, Mash-Ups, Old School and Dance for the all the ladies and their friends, from 10pm - 3am.

Nearby, someone is doing a birthday keg stand. After that, it's balls to the wall: One after another, the ladies are lifting their friends to the sky. One woman does a full minute of upside-down beer consumption. Post-stand, some stagger over to the bushes to vomit. Then they rush back to hit the keg again. They're indomitable, happy, and drunk—and nothing is going to ruin this party.

Nude Scapes opens at Art Wolfe Gallery

Celebrated wildlife and nature photographer Art Wolfe will showcase a new exhibit on November 13, entitled Nude Scapes.

Artist Statement:

At first glance, once would see this new body of work as starkly different from any I have done in the past. But in fact, this is a natural evolution of my work and interests.
This body of work is created with the objective toward the theatrical as opposed to erotic. Nevertheless, many of the landscapes and human forms are inescapably sensual in nature. Over the past thirty years I have traveled among many remote cultures and nudity is more the norm than not. One could say traditional and religious teachings have impressed upon our culture that the human nude form be viewed somewhat differently. I value challenging the perception of these concepts.
If you look closely, you will see a direct progression from the work I have done earlier in tribal communities, where spots, lines, and textures play heavily into the ornamental decoration that these peoples use during celebrations.
Additionally, I have drawn heavily from the imagery of my book Vanishing Act, a collection showing how evolutionary traits benefit animals in disguising themselves from predators.
In this new series, I have tried to abstract the human form through the use of line, patterns, texture, and unusual angles of view.

Washington's "everything but marriage" will become model law around the country

"Everything..(or should we call it)..anything but marriage," may be coming to a city near you, as leaders in a several states become desperate to prevent marriage equality, an issue that some see as inflicting "violence" on straight marriage.
So says Dan Savage in The Stranger.

We're all talking about Maine but the vote to uphold R-71 here in Washington state may wind up having a more significant impact. Washington was the first state where voters backed a law that provided same-sex couples with the all the rights of marriage that the state can confer...

Rhode Island governor, Republican Don Carcieri recently vetoed a bill that would have allowed same-sex partners to make funeral arrangements. But after meeting privately with a half-dozen members of Queer Action of Rhode Island, he cited the “everything but marriage” referendum as a possible model.

One of the comments to that Stranger post mentioned that religious conservatives really wanted the people of Washington to have their say about same-sex relations. It looks like they did.

The voice of the people in WA state was strong, and now it's breaking down barriers.

However, many gays are resentful that this whole separate but equal movement is coming back and that DP's might be used as an excuse for not granting full marriage equality.

Lobby Bar will soon open and take over the space that was formerly home to King Cobra and before that Sugar. The space has seen a number of bars, both gay and straight, come and go. The Capitol Hill Seattle blog got a recent sneak peak into the construction.

An elegant seating area with black glass chandeliers greets you on entry to the new space. A massive, marble-topped bar dominates the center of the Lobby. Behind the bar is a mix of finished, glossy cabinetry and the rough exposed brick of the building's walls. Staircases to the left and and right invite you to the upper level where the railing will invite you to spy on the activities below.

The owner is trying to crate a space where the gays can get "a good, reasonably priced drink in an comfortable, inviting environment..."

Seattle's favorite holiday tradition of Pacific Northwest Ballet's NUTCRACKER returns beginning November 27, 2009 and they are offering up a challenge for contestants to test their creativity and win tickets.

Are you nuts about Nutcracker? Tell PNB about it and you could be one of twelve lucky writers to win two free tickets to an opening weekend performance of PNB’s renowned holiday extravaganza! Pacific Northwest Ballet is holding a writing contest, so take pen to paper (well, fingers to keypad) and send us your notes about Nutcracker. Get cracking: For twelve days – November 12 through 23 – PNB will be scanning our Nutcracker@pnb.org mailbox for outstanding anecdotes and essays, be they funny or far-out, touching or treacly, and picking a baker’s dozen to be showcased on our website. Winners will receive two free tickets to an opening weekend performance of Nutcracker, a Nutcracker poster, a collectible Nutcracker bobble-head, and a fistful of Nutcracker flair pins!
