Stars Come Out for Terrence Higgins Trust

Over £90,000 was raised for HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust at last night’s Supper Club in central London.

High profile guests who supported the event included Heidi Range, Graham Norton, Cilla Black, Jacquetta Wheeler, Gail Porter, Jason Isaacs, Jodie Prenger and Pattie Boyd.

The now annual event saw over fifty chic dinner parties taking place simultaneously in the capital's best restaurants and private homes. After dinner, guests were chauffeur driven to a fabulous party at Cuban venue Floridita for a carnival of champagne and delicious cocktails from Sagatiba. Guests were also treated to exclusive performances by Alphabeat and DJ Danny Rampling.

Restaurants who took part in this year’s Supper Club include: Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley, Nobu, Scott’s, The Greenhouse, China Tang, and Galvin at Windows. All the restaurants involved in the Supper Club have donated their services free of charge to raise funds for THT.

GFest Launches at the Houses of Parliament

GFest – gayWise LGBT Arts Festival, London's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender cross-art festival was launched on Monday 26th October at the Houses of Parliament.

Hosted by David Lammy, MP, GFest 09 launch was attended by Ministers, Members of Parliament, Deputy Mayor of London Richard Barnes, GFest 09 artists and other dignitaries.

David Lammy who welcomed the guests outlined a greater need for inclusive artistic events like GFest and the role it plays in better community cohesion to fight homophobia and transphobia.

Deputy Mayor of London Richard Barnes congratulated the organisers and wished the festival every success and encouraged Londoners to get involved.

10,000 to attend Trafalgar Square Hate Crime Vigil

On Friday October 30th at 9pm in Trafalgar Square, London, there is a silent vigil calling upon people from all over the world to join and show that hate crime is unacceptable and we will no longer tolerate it.

Pride London and 17-24-30, ask that people light candles of hope and observe the two minutes silence 9pm GMT both in the UK and throughout the World.

People are invited to post a photo on Facebook with their candle in front of a monument from your city. 17-24-30 wants to make this a worldwide day of remembrance, hope and action.

Sandi Toksvig will be introducing the speakers at the vigil, The Gay Men's Chorus and many friends will be singing and the London Gay Wind Symphony Band will be playing. The evening is supported by PrideLondon who will be providing stewards, T-Shirts and experience in managing public events. Over 10,000 people are expected to attend in Trafalgar Square alone.

3 Teens Arrested Over Gay Hate Murder

Two teenage girls were among three arrested this morning over the homophobic murder of a civil servant in Trafalgar Square. The three youths attacked him as he walked through Trafalgar Square. CCTV images of the girls were released as reported here.

The suspects, aged 17,17 and 18, were arrested at their homes in south-east London after a tip-off. They were being interviewed at separate police stations.

Ian Baynham, 62, from Beckenham, suffered severe brain damage when he was punched and kicked to the ground after he confronted a girl who was shouting homophobic abuse. He died this week when his family agreed to switch off his life support machine.

Baynham was knocked to the ground by a single punch by a dark-skinned youth after first scuffling with the girl who had shouted abuse at him. The friend managed to grab one of the girls, but she managed to get away when passers-by intervened - thinking that he was assaulting her.

The police have described the arrests as "significant".

London Hate Crime Vigil Organised

In response to the recent attack in Trafalgar Square and the rise in the number of homophobic attacks in London, a vigil has been organised in Trafalgar Square on Friday 30th October 2009, 8pm.

Event organisers state that the aim of the vigil is to show the world that this anti-sociable behaviour is unacceptable in London. For further details about the event, join their group on Facebook - HATE CRIME VIGIL

If you’re interested in marching through Soho and helping to get people to join in along the way, meet up at Soho Square at 7pm. The aim is to get people out of the bars and on to the streets.

The organisers say it’s important that as many as possible join in, "because this wasn’t just a homophobic attack, it was an attack on everyone’s right to walk through their city without fear of attack. This is about everyone, str8 and gay."

Ian Baynham Murder - CCTV Pictures Released

CCTV still have been issued by the Metropolitan Police showing two teenage girls, seen in the area where Ian Baynham, 62, suffered fatal head injuries.

The two girls are described as white, approximately 5ft 9in and 5ft 5in tall, with blonde hair. They were wearing jeans and one was wearing a black jacket over a green top. The male suspect is described as dark skinned, around 5ft 8in tall, of thin build and with black hair. He was wearing a black jacket.

Baynham was punched and kicked to death while on a night out celebrating his new job at the Home Office. He suffered fatal head injuries in the 'vicious' assault by three young people, two blonde girls and a boy, outside the South African High Commission.

Detective Chief Inspector Clive Heys, who is leading the hunt for the killers, said, 'I don't criticise Mr Baynham for his actions. If you are 62 years of age and minding your own business when somebody hurls abuse at you, I think you are entitled to remonstrate with them. It is horrendous that this can happen in Trafalgar Square on a Friday night'.

Gay Tourist Office to Open

London is to get the very first Gay Tourist Office. It will be a vital resource for London's LGBT residents and visitors. They open on 22nd October 2009!

The office will be in Soho at 30 Lisle Street, WC2H (above Ku Bar, behind the Vue Cinema and within view of the Leicester Square tube station). They will be open Monday - Saturday from 12pm to 6pm.

Shaun Newport, the centre director says, "Fantastic activities happen all year round including Pride London, The London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, sports, arts, charity fundraisers, health courses, workshops and educational courses, shopping, leisure events and clubbing so we feel it is important for all the information to be found in one place. Ambitious Programme for London's Gay Art Festival

GFest - gayWise LGBT arts Festival, known for short as GFest, has announced its 2009 festival programme.

GFest is the premier LGBT annual cross-arts festival in London - a platform for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and queer artists.

The festival will take place at various venues in London including Rich Mix, Cochrane Theater, McKenzie Pavilion in Finsbury Park and The Drill Hall during 9 to 22 November 2009.

New course for living with HIV and Hep C

On October 1 a new six week course for gay men who are living with HIV and Hepatitis C is being launched. The group will meet each week from 6.30 - 9.30pm in central London.

The course looks at living with both HIV and Hepatitis C, but the primary focus will be on Hepatitis. Issues covered include dealing with the impact of diagnosis, treatment, sex and disclosure and coping emotionally.

The course will be facilitated by someone with personal experience of HIV and Hepatitis C. A doctor and a clinical nurse from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital will lead the sessions on treatment and the medical aspects of Hepatitis C.

The event, returning for its ninth year, will see fifty lavish dinner parties take place simultaneously in some of the capital’s finest restaurants.

After dinner, guests will be chauffeur driven from their dinner venues to Cuban nightspot Floridita, for a carnival of champagne, dancing, and an exclusive performance by a very special guest. In previous years, the event has seen seen surprise performances from Sophie Ellis Bextor, Ewan McGregor, and The Puppini Sisters.

Young people from London have the chance to experience the thrill of treading the boards this summer. The Drill Hall is running two unique projects especially for young people who either identify as LGBT or have LGBT families.

Over the week the children will work together as a group to make a short piece of theatre that they will present to family and friends at the end of the week. The National Portrait Gallery is holding the first portrait exhibition to celebrate the contribution of gay people and gay icons to history and culture.

Gay Icons, at the National Portrait Gallery (2 July–18 October 2009) will celebrate the contribution of gay people - and the significance of the gay icon - to history and culture. Ten selectors have worked with the Gallery to make their own personal choices of six individuals, their ‘icons’. Not only does this exhibition include many well-known icons, who may or may not be gay themselves, it also reveals some surprises and will encourage a wide audience to think about familiar faces in new ways.

The ‘Gay Icons’ shown in the exhibition will include those people, living or dead, whatever their sexual orientation or interests, who the ten individual selectors regard as inspirational, or as a personal icon. Gay Icons brings together portraits of those people who are regarded as especially significant to each of the selectors, alongside those of the selectors themselves, all prominent gay figures in contemporary culture and society.

Coinciding with the fortieth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York, this exhibition focuses on portraits of both historical and modern figures. The choices provide a fascinating range of inspiring figures – some very famous, some heroic, others relatively unknown. Each icon is presented with information about their personal, and sometimes public, significance, some of it relating to the sitter but much of it linked to the selectors who have been prepared to share their experiences and feelings in their own exhibition texts.

LGBT Matters to Waltham Forest

Members of the borough’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) community who’ve yet to have their say about life in Waltham Forest need to get busy as the Council’s online survey closes on June 29.

The survey – found at www.WalthamForestLGBTmatters.com – aims to explore residents’ experiences of using Council services, community safety and relationships with other community groups. The survey will then be followed up with a series of focus groups to get an even deeper understanding of what it’s like to be an LGBT person living, working or socialising in Waltham Forest.

Can you spot the signs of early HIV infection?

On June 4th, Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) is launching a new advertising campaign in London aimed at helping gay men to spot the signs of HIV by identifying seroconversion illness (SCI). SCI, or primary infection, occurs in around 80% of men who have been infected with HIV following unsafe sex.

The advert graphically links unsafe sex with some of the key symptoms of seroconversion illness, such as a sore throat, rash, fever and body aches. The strap line says: “If you’ve had sex without a condom and show three or more of these symptoms within six weeks, it’s possible you’ve now got HIV. London's LGBT Arts Festival announces selection Panel for 2009

GFest – gayWise LGBT Arts Festival, London's premier LGBT cross-arts festival, has announced the selection panel members for 2009.

Art historian Dr Alan Tomkins, Ajamu X - photographer and Black LGBT community archivist, accomplished filmmaker Campbell, performance artist Brian Lobel, writer and editor Helen Sandler, editor of Chroma: a Queer literary journal Shaun Levin, GFest artistic director Niranjan Kamatkar and established theatre director and advisor Sita Ramamurthy will select the works for this year's GFest programme.

GFest open call for submissions was announced last month. Deadline for submissions is 29 June 2008 & the panel has agreed to meet in July to finalise the programme.
