Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender LGBT History month takes place every February. It celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community.

On Wednesday, February 15 from 8:00pm until 9:30pm, the RainboWritinGroup will be holding a special workshop.

Over the Rainbow’s writer in residence Andrew McMillan is running a special one off workshop for the Rainbow Writing Group; the workshop will be suitable for everyone from new writers through to the very experienced and will explore different techniques and ideas for getting the most out of our words and ideas, with a focus on poetry.

For the writers, the beginners and the curious amongst you!

Vice Versa at The Xchange

A brand-new Saturday night is being launched in Bournemouth, on 11 Feb 2012, at The Xchange.

The night will be called Vice Versa and is aimed at those who like their music more clubby. This will be a regular monthly event, on every second Saturday of every month.

Vice Versa’s resident DJ Dave H will be playing only the best commercial, upfront and progressive house, influenced by the London Vauxhall clubbing scene. On occasions, there will also be guest DJs.

Stuart Kimber, owner of the Xchange, said: “We have become more and more aware that many in Bournemouth and surrounding areas want a night where the music is more clubby and similar to what you might experience in London or Brighton; so, here it is – Vice Versa!”

Stand Up, Stand Out this World AIDS Day

HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust is today launching its new World AIDS Day campaign, Stand Up, Stand Out, and asking people nationwide to ‘show us their undies’ to support people living with HIV.

Almost 20 people are still being diagnosed with HIV every day in the UK and it is an incurable and life threatening condition. With close to 100,000 people now living with the infection and numbers increasing every year, Terrence Higgins Trust is asking people to Stand Up, Stand Out to raise greater awareness of HIV and vital funds for HIV prevention services and support for people living with the virus.

THT’s Executive Director of Fundraising, Genevieve Edwards, said: “For nearly 30 years Terrence Higgins Trust has been at the very heart of the HIV epidemic, supporting people living with, or at risk of, the virus. With your support this December we can reach out to even more people who need us.

“Please Stand Up, Stand Out to increase awareness about HIV, including how to protect yourself and your partner from the infection, and raise vital funds for Terrence Higgins Trust’s prevention services and support for people living with the virus. HIV is still on the increase and we need to act now to prevent further infections.”

Space Youth Project Funds Boost

Space Youth Project recently benefited from a £4,000 pound gift from the Dorset Lesbian and gay helpline who gave the gift to the Dorset Based Youth group.

Spokesperson Ryan Cleminson said in a statement that, “We are delighted to have received such a large donation from DLGH and the money is going to be a big help towards securing the funding we need to operate the youth groups."

The situation for Space Youth Project is that they need the money to be able to run a Bournemouth based youth group to compliment groups in Poole, Weymouth, Christchurch and the newly formed group in Ferndown.

Ryan explains his approach to the council, “We are openly inviting the councillors of Bournemouth Borough Council to meet with us to discuss their funding pledge so that we can start to operate a group in the town; our funding was cut many months ago now and despite conversations and e mails there seems to be nothing clear”.

Veteran Gay Rights Campaigner to Visit Bournemouth

On 28th June 1970, Troy Perry and two friends founded Christopher Street West to hold an annual Pride Parade. It is the oldest gay pride parade in the world. Today there are Pride Parades held around the globe as a direct result.

This is just an example of how Troy Perry has helped to change the rights of gay people around the world. This Friday evening, 30th September, he will share his experiences in Bournemouth at ‘An Evening with Troy’ to be held at the Metropolitan Community Church in Hannington Road at 7.30 pm.

In 2007 Perry’s life story and his activism was chronicled in Call Me Troy, a very moving documentary film by Tragoidia Moving Pictures. Beginning in the 1960s when people were being arrested in gay bars, Perry led marches and political protests that saw laws changed and homophobic politicians and police forced to change their ways.

Perry was the first openly gay person to serve on the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations. In 1978 he was honoured by the American Civil Liberties Union Lesbian and Gay Rights Chapter with its Humanitarian Award. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from Episcopal Divinity School, Samaritan College, and Sierra University and was honoured by the Gay Press Association with its Humanitarian Award.

Six Feet Under Convention Comes to Bournemouth

An exhibition of flamboyant funeral merchandise will feature as part of the first Six Feet Under convention, which is taking place in Bournemouth from 12-14 August, 2011.

Six Feet Under was a series set in an American funeral home famous for its ground-breaking presentation of the issues around death and dying and included a number of gay main characters. It ran for five series between 2001-2005. The episodes are now being re-aired on Sky Atlantic.

Such has been the interest generated by the convention, an open-air public exhibition of coffins created using traditional materials and crafts, will accompany the convention in Bournemouth Triangle on the Saturday and Sunday.

There will also be unusual hearses, balloons and a release of doves. In the best seaside tradition, you’ll also have the chance to pose for a photograph in a coffin.

Hamilton Hall to Stay Men Only - Official

Hamilton Hall have received a registered letter from the Equality & Human Rights Commission confirming they may stay a 'Men Only' venue. They are the first to challenge in this manner - AND WIN.

Owner John Bellamy commented, "After hundreds of hours sifting through complicated web sites and legal mumbo jumbo, made sense of it and found exceptions that would apply and have won our case - and I am thrilled."

The letter reads:

'Dear Mr. Bellamy

I am writing to let you know that the Equality and Human Rights Commission has decided not to take any enforcement action regarding your male only policy at Hamilton Hall.

Having read all submitted information from you, we believe that it is possible that men and women may reasonably object to the presence of the opposite sex in respect to your clothing optional policy.

It was an unusually warm night for April and the club got hot, in more ways than one, as the old church filled up. Amanda Wilson (Freemasons, Love on my mind, Disco's Revenge) did an excellent set of floor fillers and Dj Lee Harris, DJ Kevin Brooks, Adrian Dunbar and Charlie Sparx all kept the night going until late.

Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) on Hannington Road in Bournemouth has just the thing for those who feel a little bit more ‘bah-humbug’ than ‘peace on earth’! Their Blue Christmas service is for those who are feeling, well, ‘blue’ this holiday season. The idea of a Blue Christmas service began in the 1980s with a few churches in Canada who realised that not everyone looked forward to the holidays. MCC has offered the service in Bournemouth for the past 7 years. This year’s service is Monday evening, 20th December, at 7 pm.
