General Motors has officially unveiled the 2014 Chevrolet Impala at this year's New York Auto Show. Riding on the same bones as the 2013 Malibu, the next-generation Impala boasts a considerably more attractive exterior with plenty of personality. Borrowing the best elements of design from the GM stable, we see more than a little Camaro and Lacrosse in the sedan's front fascia and stylized hips. Buyers can look forward to either standard 18-inch wheels or a slew of larger options, including massive 20-inch rollers. Under the hood, GM has graced the 2014 Impala with a range efficient direct-injection engines, including a 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with the automaker's eAssist hybrid system. With 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, the drivetrain falls well short of the 288 horsepower offered up by the Ford Taurus, though it does so while returning significantly better fuel economy. GM Says the four-cylinder Impala will return 35 mpg highway, six mpg better than the full-size Ford. Those who need a little extra grunt can step up to the company's tried-and-true 3.6-liter V6 with 303 horsepower and 234 lb-ft of torque, and there's also a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder available that produces 195 horsepower, while all three engines are mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The Malibu's return for '97 was not pretty, but that prosaic model couldn't prepare Chevrolet loyalists for what followed: the 2004 Malibu/Maxx. Right now, GM designers, engineers, and execs are shrieking in horror over its mention in a story about their handsome new model. Please calm down. There's a method behind this history lesson.
The shift from Malibu/Maxx to its '08 successor represents the greatest design turnaround in GM's history, and one of Bob Lutz's biggest successes during his second tenure at the company. What do you do for an encore?

The outgoing Malibu recalled Chevrolet's glory days, when the brand offered elegance and features that transcended its status at the bottom of GM's price/purpose ladder. With its tailored appearance and formal roofline, the Malibu looked like it could fetch far more than its low-$20s pric

Its successor eschews elegant, formal sheetmetal for a sporty look. The Malibu evolves to the Opel Insignia/Buick Regal's Epsilon II architecture to lose 4.5 inches in wheelbase. Chevy worries buyers will think it has shrunk. After all, Buick markets the Regal as a "sport sedan," explaining its tight rear-seat space, so Chevrolet is quick to note that overall interior space is increased more than 3 cubic feet relative to the current Malibu, putting it in the ballpark of the Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion, and just slightly smaller than Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata. That's because the new Malibu has grown 2.7 inches wider, so big increases in shoulder and hip room compensate for slight losses in legroom and front headroom relative to the 2012 Malibu. Mark Moussa, Malibu's global chief engineer explains that relative to the Regal, his packaging engineers have greatly increased shoulder room, tightened the clearance between the headliner and the exterior roof panel, and lowered the H-point.

In the subcompact market, things like standard aluminum wheels are big news. Guess what? The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic has standard aluminum wheels. Honestly, we really like that. But in bigger news, Chevy’s forthcoming econobox is actually fun to drive. This is an about-face compared with the outgoing Aveo, which traded exclusively on its bargain-basement price. The Sonic, on sale this fall, seeks to recruit buyers with quality, features, and—to borrow a phrase overused by German car companies—driving pleasure.

A brief disclaimer: Our driving exposure was limited to preproduction prototypes in one configuration (1.4-liter turbo, manual transmission, five-door) on an improvised circuit at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana. In other words, we won’t be able to give you a definitive review until we get more time in a finished production car. But so far the worst thing about Chevy’s new subcompact is the Sonic name. There isn’t much wrong with the actual word, but so many other items in popular culture (fast-food drive-ins, video-game hedgehogs, Seattle’s former basketball team) come more readily to mind than “affordable American car.”

Plenty to Like

Aside from that, there is much to like about the Sonic, most notably the turbocharged 1.4-liter engine we sampled. Shared with the Cruze, the turbo four makes 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, 18 hp and 26 lb-ft more than the Ford Fiesta, a clear rival. And when paired with a six-speed manual, Chevrolet promises a 40-mpg highway fuel-economy rating for the Sonic turbo. The other engine (also sourced from the Cruze) is a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter making the same 138 hp but with a reduced torque figure of 125 lb-ft. The Sonic has slightly different gearing and weighs about 400 fewer pounds than the Cruze, so we expect better acceleration and fuel economy across the board. (In a recent comparison test, an automatic-equipped 1.4T Cruze posted an 8.0-second 0-to-60-mph run.)

The Sonic’s turbo pulls well above 3000 rpm; there is noticeable lag at lower engine speeds, despite a low torque peak of 1850 rpm. Still, it’s a strong, smooth engine. This is not the second coming of the Volkswagen GTI, but the Sonic turbo injects some serious fun in a segment that usually puts performance on the back burner. Chevrolet had a Honda Fit and a Ford Fiesta on hand for comparison, and the Sonic held up well. In lap times, all the drivers present went almost two seconds quicker in the Sonic than in the next-fastest Fit, but some of that is surely due to superior acceleration at higher speeds. The Honda, which is geared shorter, feels better at low engine speeds. And the Ford offers less body roll. But the Sonic looks as though it would acquit itself nicely against the Fit and Fiesta, as well as the Mazda 2. The Chevy’s steering is light and reacts quickly on turn-in. Handling eventually gives way to understeer (the Honda can be tossed around more), but up to the limit the Sonic is responsive and behaves predictably even under trail braking. We’d like a little more feel in the shift lever, but it’s acceptable for this price point.

Should Be Practical and Affordable

The Sonic is an economy car, which means sacrifices in creature comforts. The rear seats don’t have an armrest or cup holders, but they are acceptably habitable even behind a six-plus-footer in the driving position. Both Sonic sedan and hatchback share the same 99.4-inch wheelbase. The four-door, at 173.1 inches, is 14.1 inches longer than the hatch but loses in the space race with 14 cubic feet of trunk space to the hatch’s 19. The hatch also has slightly better rear-seat headroom. The cargo area in the five-door, although not as spacious or ingenious as the Honda Fit’s, has a removable false floor that creates a level surface when the seats are folded. There is also a slot for the cargo cover to slide into behind the rear seats.

Chevrolet won’t divulge Sonic pricing until the fall on-sale date gets closer, only hinting that it will be competitive in the segment. We take to that to mean a starting price of about $14,000 and, as is the case with Fiesta and Fit, loftier trim models (including the turbo) that run as high as $19,000. Also like the Fiesta, we’re guessing the Sonic hatch will command a premium for its more attractive looks, although we have to say that the Sonic sedan manages to look something less than dumpy—a huge achievement in this segment. Even in base LS trim, the Sonic comes with the aforementioned wheels, plus air conditioning, power locks, keyless entry, stability control, and an impressive 10 air bags.

We’re not quite ready to break out the “super” prefix for the Sonic, but it does appear to mark the return of the American small car, and not just in name. As part of GM’s restructuring, the Sonic will be assembled in Lake Orion, Michigan. The good news for Chevy, however, is that the Sonic appeals on its merits as a car and not as a piece of flag-waving patriotism.-caranddriver

Becker Automotive Design, a custom limousine company, has partnered with bespoke auto designer Strut to create a special-edition Cadillac Escalade ESV. Designed for global markets, the custom package offers a full mobile office system, floor-to-ceiling leather upholstery, an iPod-ready premium stereo system with digital surround sound and satellite HDTV.

The Becker-Strut package also features an on-board computer system, broadband Internet connection and printer and scanner capabilities. The computer automatically boots up or shuts down when the vehicle’s key is inserted or removed, and is fully accessible via a custom touchscreen monitor using proprietary Becker Automotive Design software.

The exterior of the vehicle has also been customized, featuring a polished diamond-mesh grille and forged alloy wheels. Each vehicle also features unique badging, including the Strut signature grille.

Pricing for a Becker-Strut converted SUV starts at about $125,000 and can range up to $225,000 for the top-of-the-line package.

DETROIT - A special-edition Chevrolet Camaro Convertible will serve as the official pace car of the 2011 Indianapolis 500. Chevrolet and Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials made the announcement at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale classic auto auction, where a bidder will have the opportunity to purchase the first of 50 Indianapolis 500 Festival Committee cars.

The 2011 Camaro Convertible is the 22nd Chevrolet chosen to pace "The Greatest Spectacle In Racing®" and the seventh Camaro. Adding to the rich heritage is the fact that 2011 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first Indianapolis 500, as well as the centennial year of Chevrolet.

Chevrolet will donate full proceeds of the auction to the David Foster Foundation, a charity devoted to supporting families with children in need of life-saving organ transplants. David Foster, the 15-time Grammy-winning music producer and songwriter, founded the organization in his native Canada.

The pace car, along with the matching festival cars, features a Summit White exterior accented with orange stripes and door graphics. The interior is trimmed in orange leather, including front seat headrests embossed with the Indy 500 logo, along with white door panels and instrument panel trim. The instrument panel trim features extensions of the orange exterior stripes.

The color combination is similar to the design used on the 1969 Camaro Indy pace car - replicas of which have become among the most popular Camaros in the collector world.

"It's an honor for Chevrolet to pace the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, especially during this landmark year," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "This is also a great opportunity for us to build on Camaro's strong momentum, while supporting an important charity."

The auction for the commemorative edition pace car takes place Saturday evening, Jan. 22, during SPEED's live coverage of the Barrett-Jackson event. The vehicle carries lot number 1284 and bids can be submitted at the auction in person or online by clicking this link for a 2011 absentee bidder registration packet:

Pace car details

Equipped with a 400-horsepower (298 kW) V-8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, the actual pace car for the race requires no performance modifications to perform its duty in front of the racing field.

All 50 of the Festival Committees cars will be SS convertible models fitted with the 2SS equipment package, offering the following standard features:

* Four-wheel disc brakes with Brembo four-piston calipers and hydraulic assist
* StabiliTrak electronic stability control
* Competitive/sport mode that enhances on-track performance
* Performance Launch Control (with the manual transmission) that optimizes hard-acceleration launches for quicker, more consistent performance

Convertible refinement

The Camaro Convertible delivers coupe-like driving dynamics, with the unmatched fun of open air driving. The Convertible model contains an enhanced structure designed to eliminate the traditional compromises of open cars, such as cowl or steering wheel shake. The goal is a convertible that drives like the coupe. All the powertrain and suspension elements of the existing Camaro Coupe carry over unchanged in the convertible. The top has a smooth, tailored fit, with acoustical foam in the headliner that helps deliver a quiet ride with the top up.

Four strategic reinforcements enhance the already-stiff body structure to eliminate common convertible maladies of cowl and steering wheel shake. They include:

* A tower-to-tower brace under the hood
* A transmission support reinforcement brace
* Underbody tunnel brace
* Front and rear underbody "V" braces.

The power-folding top retracts in about 20 seconds. It is built in partnership with the same manufacturer as the Corvette convertible top, and operates in a similar manner. That means it folds in a simple "Z" pattern and latches with a single, convenient handle located at the center of the windshield header. Other convertible models in this segment still offer convertible tops with dual latches, forcing drivers into two-hand operations reaching across the car.

The regular-production versions of the 2011 Camaro Convertible will begin arriving in Chevrolet dealerships in February, opening a new chapter in the Camaro's ongoing 21st century rebirth. Even before the introduction of a convertible model, Camaro ended 2010 as the sales leader in its class in the United States for the first time since 1985.

Chevrolet's pace car heritage

Louis Chevrolet, who founded the brand with William "Billy" Durant in 1911, was a racer, mechanic and pioneering engineer. He raced in the early years of the Indianapolis 500, which also started in 1911, and served a luminary of the event in the years after he retired his racing helmet. That included driving the official Indianapolis pace car, which was developed by Indy 500 founder Carl Fisher, who believed a rolling start was safer than a standing start. The first Indianapolis 500 featured a pace car driven by Fisher.

Perhaps the most mysterious warning light on your car's dashboard is the "check engine" light, which can illuminate seemingly for no reason whatsoever and lead to an unexpected bill just for diagnosing the cause. However, it is possible to diagnose, and sometimes even fix, the cause of this warning light without paying a mechanic.

Your car's check engine light is linked to its on-board diagnostic system, which measures functions such as engine speed, ignition timing, fuel mixture and sometimes, the timing of gear shifts. It then uses that information to identify problems in those functions that could affect emissions and performance. There is a wide range of problems that will cause the light to illuminate, ranging from minor to major, so it's important to determine the cause promptly.

Before you find yourself in a situation with the check engine light illuminated, read your owner's manual to understand why it may illuminate and if it has different warnings to help you understand whether the problem is minor or more serious. In many cars, a check engine light that flashes rhythmically -- not just flickers on and off -- indicates a severe problem that needs immediate attention, while a steadily illuminated light indicates a less serious problem.

Once you thoroughly understand how your check engine light operates, here are three strategies you can try before paying your mechanic for a diagnosis.

Remove and reinstall your gas cap, and make sure it's tight. Because the check engine light is associated with your car's emissions system, it will recognize if there are fuel vapors leaking from around your gas cap and set off the warning light. A loose or improperly installed gas cap is the most common reason for the light to illuminate. If the light does not go out after checking the gas cap and the car seems to be running fine, don't assume that was not the problem. It can sometimes take a few trips for the system to reset.

Get the engine's diagnostic code from an automotive pro for free. If you own a General Motors vehicle with OnStar, contact an OnStar adviser who will read the code from your car remotely. Many auto parts stores and franchise oil change and transmission-service shops will read the code for free, though they may pressure you to do the repair with them. If you get a code read by one of these shops, ask for the code itself -- usually a single letter, followed by numbers -- and then use the shop for the repair if you are confident of the work.

Get the code yourself. For $50 to $100, you can buy a diagnostic-system code reader at your local auto parts store or online. Some newer system scanners can connect right to your smartphone, such as the GoPoint GL1.

Many cars have some method of displaying the trouble code, usually using the key and either rotating it between the accessory position (the position where you can power the radio and other accessories without the car running) and the "on" position (without starting the car) a specific number of times. With some, you keep the key in the accessory position, and push and hold the trip odometer and reset buttons. To find instructions, do an Internet search on the year, make and model of your car plus the words "check engine code" and "manually."

Once you know the code, you can research what it is associated with on websites such as OBD-Codes.com (for on-board diagnostics codes) or ALLDATAdiy.com. In some cases, you can get instructions on how to repair the car yourself on those websites.

Keep in mind that, if there is a problem beyond a loose gas cap, the trouble code produced by the diagnostic equipment is usually associated with more than one problem. Ultimately, it's good to work with a trusted mechanic who can deduce the cause of the problem in your car.

The all-electric Nissan Leaf was named the 2011 World Car of The Year at the New York Auto Show on Thursday.

The Leaf, which went on sale in the United States in December and is also available in Japan and Europe, beat the BMW 5-Series and the Audi A8 for the top spot.

"It is a great joy that the world's first, mass-marketed electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf, has won the prestigious award," said Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn.

Ghosn has been an outspoken booster of electric vehicles, predicting that they will account for 10% of the global auto market by 2020. Nissan plans to release it in other global markets in 2012.

The Leaf is a zero-emission car, powered by a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged in about eight hours. It has a 100-mile range.

Unlike the Leaf, the Chevy Volt has a battery range of only 40 miles. A gasoline engine kicks in after that.

The Leaf was ranked No. 2, behind the natural gas-powered Honda Civic GX, in the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's Greenest Car list last year.

The Nissan has a sticker price of about $33,000, but after a federal tax credit of $7,500, the car costs about $25,000. The Leaf is considerably less expensive than the Volt, which costs around $40,000, or about $32,500 after the tax credit.

The 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was a performance monster, featuring an all-aluminum engine displacing 427 cubic inches that was originally intended for racing. Just 69 units were built, and they are highly coveted by collectors today. Perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that Chevrolet chose to resurrect this classic moniker for what it is calling the fastest and most technologically advanced Camaro ever built.

At this point, specifications are still preliminary, but Chevrolet is estimating that its supercharged and intercooled 6.2-liter LSA V8 engine will put out around 550 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. Those ponies will be sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission using a dual-disc clutch that's necessary to properly harness all those horses. There's also a dual-mode exhaust system that alters the sound level and character in response to engine rpm.

Chevrolet tells us that its goal was to build "a Camaro intended to reach optimal lap times on top road-racing circuits and excellent driving dynamics on the street." To that end, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 will be fitted with a new electric power steering system and Magnetic Ride Control that will offer both Tour and Sport modes. Brembo brakes measuring 14.6-inch (370 mm) in the front (with six-piston calipers) and 14.4-inch (365 mm) at the rear (with four-piston calipers) bring it all back down from speed.

Naturally, there's an updated body kit to differentiate the ZL1 from lesser machines. Most notable are the redesigned fascia that features a front splitter, vertical fog lamps and air intakes designed for brake cooling. There's also a new aluminum hood with a raised, satin black-finish carbon fiber insert that uses a unique air extractor that is said to increase downforce by directing oncoming air over the car. There's also a spoiler at the rear of the car and new 20-inch aluminum wheels fitted with specially developed Goodyear Supercar F2 tires.

Chevrolet promises to have the Camaro ZL1 on dealer lots in the beginning of 2012, and it will be available in any color offered on the Camaro. We can hardly wait. Chevrolet today revealed the Colorado Show Truck in advance of the Bangkok International Auto Show, where it is making its global public debut. The concept previews the next-generation Colorado midsize pickup truck, which will build on Chevrolet’s strong truck DNA and award-winning heritage. The Colorado goes on sale in Thailand later this year.

“Thailand is the world’s-largest market for midsize pickups, so this was the perfect location in which to unveil our new Colorado,” said Susan Docherty, vice president, GMIO Sales, Marketing and Aftersales. “Trucks have been part of Chevrolet’s core for nearly all of its 100-year history. The Colorado reinforces that heritage with expressive design, refinement and uncompromising capability.”

The show truck features an extended-cab body atop a high-stance AWD chassis and rides on large, 20-inch wheels and off-road tires. Power comes from an efficient 2.8L turbo-diesel engine, which produces a broad torque band for excellent cargo and towing capability.

“Although this is a show vehicle, the basic proportions and form convey the vision for the next-generation Colorado that we will bring to market,” said Brad Merkel, GM's global vehicle line executive. “It reflects a stylized version of the new truck, one that takes into account rugged dependable truck capabilities for commercial use as well as sophisticated refinement for personal-use needs.”

While the new Colorado was developed within GM’s global product development organization, engineers took careful steps to ensure it would meet local market needs. Roberto Rempel, GM's global vehicle chief engineer, lived in Thailand for several months during the truck’s development, immersing himself in the market and observing how the Thai people use their trucks and the road conditions they experience.

“Pickups are instrumental in the vibrant Thai economy and owners take great pride in their trucks, which are used for both work and personal driving,” he said. “These customers ask a lot of their trucks, so the powertrains and chassis must be very robust to earn their trust – and that’s exactly what we’ve delivered.”

Design details

The Colorado show truck’s purposeful design conveys strength through bodywork that appears tightly wrapped over the chassis and a wide, confident stance. In the front, Chevrolet’s internationally recognized gold bowtie and dual-port grille are framed by large headlamps that flow into the front fenders, and an extractor vent on the hood.

“Around the globe, pickup trucks are associated with strength, capability and function – and that’s exactly what the Colorado show truck embodies,” said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of Global Design. “Its broad-shouldered proportions are derived from nearly a century of Chevrolet truck heritage.”

Pepperdust Metallic exterior paint is accented with polished aluminum details in the fascias, as well as integrated side steps and black-masked projector-style headlamps with LED lighting elements. At the rear is a full-width LED-lit taillamp, which creates a striking appearance when illuminated.

Additional exterior details include:

A streamlined “cab collar” design with a body-color hard tonneau cover on the bed

Gray accents on the side, front and rear lower moldings

20-inch aluminum wheels featuring a “liquid metal” finish, with Stone Gray color wheel ports

Inside, there’s another signature Chevrolet cue: a dual-cockpit instrument panel design. It flows into the doors, with continuous lines that create a floating, wraparound effect, amplifying the Colorado’s feeling of spaciousness. Ice-blue lighting and high-quality, “double-faced” leather-trimmed seats add sophistication and refinement.

“The interior is designed to deliver a premium and inviting environment, with a greater feeling of spaciousness than is typically found in midsize trucks,” said Welburn. “There’s also great attention to detail in the execution of the features you see and feel.”

A brace of motorcycle-inspired, three-dimensional gauges stand out on the instrument panel, projecting a sporty appearance.

Contrasting trim used with the light-colored leather seating, dark wood trim accented with chrome and low-gloss and soft-touch materials are used throughout for a premium feel. A number of storage compartments are located throughout the interior, including a covered center bin for concealment of valuable items, and a large, dual glovebox.

Additional features include a dual-zone, digital climate control system and the latest in “infotainment” technology. The show truck highlights an ergonomically positioned 7-inch LCD display in the center stack, for easy viewing and intuitive control of Web access, navigation, music and hands-free phone features.

New Chevrolet Cruze Eco gets 42 MPG.....

Chevrolet has released the official EPA fuel economy estimates on the 2011 Chevrolet Eco. The official numbers are 28 MPG in the city and 42 MPG on the highway. This beats the 40 MPG goal Chevrolet has set out to to achieve for the Eco model.

The Eco's highway numbers are better then the Honda Civic, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Ford Fusion Hybrid, and Nissan Altima Hybrid. In order to achieve this feat, Chevrolet engineers made aerodynamic changes which helped it achieve 6 MPG better highway fuel mileage then the non-Eco models. A lot of the improvements come from knowledge gained from developing the 2011 Volt in wind tunnel testing. The upper grille features more closeouts, a lower front air dam extension, a lowered ride height, and underbody panels to improve airflow beneath the car all help in improve the aerodynamics of the Cruze Eco. The Cruze Eco also features an innovative a lower front grille air shutter system which closes at highway speeds to make the vehicle even more aerodynamic and cut down on drag. With all of these aerodynamic improvements, the Cruze Eco's drag coefficient was lowered to 0.298--10% lower over a non-Eco Cruze--. This drag coefficient is class-leading.

Weight is another area Chevrolet engineers focused on to improve the Cruze Eco's fuel efficiency. The regular Cruze weighs 3,223 lb. This challenged engineers to find weighs to reduce the weight. Weld flanges were reduced from 1 mm to 2 mm in length resulting in a weight reduction. The sheet metal gauge thickness was reduced by about .1 mm thickness which further decreased the Cruze's weight while preserving structural integrity. Lighter wheels and tires were also implemented achieving a weight reduction of 21.2 lb. With all these weight saving techniques done to the Cruze Eco, engineers managed to get the Eco's weight down to 3,009 lb.--a 214 lb. weight reduction--.

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco is priced at $18,895 and goes on sale in January 2011.

In the U.S, the Cruze plays a huge role, and GM got it right. They are currently being built at the Lordstown, Ohio, plant, the new sedan is expected to become one of GM’s major sellers over the next few years. The extra year on the Continent should allow GM to work out the kinks before making the car available in its most vital market.

The Cruze is also significant because Chevrolet claims it ushers in a new styling strategy for the brand. We have to wait to see what that means for future Chevys, but we can say that the Cruze definitely looks good from nearly every angle. The front end is aggressive and powerful, and the rear impresses with its wide stance and taillights similar in shape to those of the BMW 7-series and Lexus LS. Perhaps the least original aspect is the side view; we have seen this roofline and window opening on many cars, although rarely on such a compact model. On the road, the proportions seem just right. The Cruze manages to look masculine and cool, unlike most of its competitors, which, frankly, can be slightly embarrassing to be seen in.

No Diesels for the U.S., but Expect the Turbo Four to Be Very Efficient

In Europe, the Cruze launches with two gasoline four-cylinders—a 1.6-liter that makes 111 hp and a 1.8-liter producing 139 hp—and a 148-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-diesel that likely will spawn a 123-hp variant in the future. A five-speed manual is standard on all engines; the more powerful gasoline mill can be ordered with an optional six-speed automatic. We’ll see the 1.8-liter gasoline engine here, as well as a 140-hp, 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder—expected to return at least 40 mpg combined—that will debut as the car hits the North American market. And here’s hoping we’ll also be treated to a 260-hp SS version powered by the fire-breathing, turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecotec engine, although GM’s High Performance Vehicle Operations have been put on hold.

Solidly Built and Drives Well

The Cruze is low on breakthrough technologies, but it is a thoroughly well-engineered car, with an ultra-strong structure and low center of gravity. GM says 65 percent of its body and structure are made from high-strength steel. The fit and finish is improved over current GM small cars’, as highlighted by the small gaps between the body panels, which require precise stamping and accurate assembly. On the road, the rigid body and the extensive sound dampening translate into less noise.

2011 Camaro Convertible

The 21st century rebirth of the Chevrolet Camaro opens a new chapter when the 2011 Camaro Convertible premieres at the Los Angeles International Auto Show on Nov. 17.

The Camaro Convertible will arrive in Chevrolet showrooms in February 2011. Starting price will be $30,000, including $850 destination. (Full details will be released later this year.)

“The Convertible will make the all-new Camaro, already a smash-hit, even more desirable to a greater range of drivers,” says Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing.

The Convertible model will be available in the same basic model offering as the Camaro Coupe. The standard model will have a 312-hp Direct Injection V6 engine featuring 29 miles per gallon on the highway. The SS model will feature the 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 426 hp. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard, with an optional six-speed automatic.

Camaro is America’s most popular sports car, seizing leadership in U.S. sales with the coupe model that launched in spring of 2009 as a 2010 model. The right to purchase one of the first Convertibles was recently sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction for $205,000, with all proceeds donated to charity.

Both a 312-hp 3.6-liter V6 and the top-dog 6.2-liter V8 will be offered, and buyers will be able to choose either a six-speed automatic or manual regardless of engine.

Pricing will be set at $30,000 (including a $850 destination charge) to start, a significant $7,000 hike compared to the coupe.

GM is expected to release more details in the lead-up to the LA Auto Show, with the official unveiling set for November 17th.

Nissan Juke coming to Gateway Hyundai Nissan soon!

Born from a desire to satiate appetites for a compact crossover, the Juke was conceived as a sportier alternative to the Nissan Rogue. The larger, family-friendly Rogue has exceeded sales expectations in the U.S. market, which begs the question: can the Juke carve a sizeable niche for itself stateside? To find out, we sampled one of the two pre-production examples in America well in advance of its October release.

The Specs
Everything about the Juke's outward appearance suggests a lively personality. From its massive haunches and complex sculptural shapes to its large rally-inspired headlamps, the Juke looks like the rambunctious, leggy lovechild of the 370Z and the new Leaf EV.

Its underpinnings may not be son-of-Godzilla aggressive, but they're more driver-oriented than you might expect. Under the hood is a powerplant making its U.S. debut: a turbocharged, direct-injected 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder. The all-aluminum engine produces over 180 hp and 170 ft-lbs of torque, and mates to either a continuously variable automatic transmission, or a six-speed manual (in front-wheel-drive SV or SL trim levels). The Juke can be driven in Normal, Sport or Eco modes, which control throttle response, steering effort and transmission responsiveness. Fuel economy is estimated at 30 mpg combined.

A differential diverts power to the front wheels, but all-wheel drive versions are equipped with a torque-vectoring feature, which splits torque up to 50:50 between the front and rear wheels, and up to 50 percent toward either of the rear wheels. This is the first application of this technology in the under C-segment, and at 64 pounds, Nissan claims their torque-vectoring hardware is the lightest in the world. The all-wheel-drive system apportions torque based on vehicle speed, wheel speed, gear position, lateral G forces and yaw rate.

A multilink rear suspension setup is found in all-wheel-drive Jukes, replacing the torsion beam arrangement found in the front-wheel-drive version. Speed-sensitive electric steering is included on every trim level, as are 17-inch alloy wheels, antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist. Dual-stage rear passenger, side curtain and front-, side-, and roof-mounted airbags are standard, as are stability and traction control systems.

Three trim levels will be available—S, SL and SV—though most of their differences will be apparent inside rather than outside the cabin. Available options include USB audio connectors, a six-speaker stereo system, GPS navigation, Bluetooth compatibility, a rear-view camera, Nissan's wireless key system with push-button start and leather seats. Curb weights range from 2923 pounds for a six-speed manual-equipped, front-wheel-drive SV model to 3221 pounds for an all-wheel-drive SL version
The Juke pricing will start just under $20,000 when it hits U.S. showrooms in October. Though package prices have yet to be determined, Nissan product planners are confident that fully optioned versions will come in well below $30,000.

GM vice-chairman Bob Lutz says this is a sportier version of the current Aveo budget car that hints at the next-generation car due in 2011. Lutz called the car a “pocket rocket” and said he'd like to juice it up more.

“We're showing it with a 1.4-[litre] turbo, but (vice-chairman) Tom Stephens and I are not satisfied with a 1.4 turbo,” Lutz said. “We'd like something with a little more horsepower, please. So we're working on that.” The car has a six-speed manual transmission and the same 1.4-litre, 138-hp turbocharged engine that will be available in the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze small car.

2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD now available at Gateway Chevrolet!!!

The new Silverado Heavy Duty truck has a new face with bold styling including a power dome hood with louvered details, a new new grille, and a wide opening in the new chrome front bumper. With new configurations including a 6.5-foot bed on the 3500HD Crew Cab. Standard wheels are 17-inch diameter, with available 18 and 20 inch options.

The new Silverado Heavy Duty trucks ride on a redesigned chassis, with thicker steel and hydroformed front sections. The frame incorporated 11 fully boxed frame assemblies. These boxes areas improve torsional stiffness nearly five times, and the resulting frame improves bending stiffness by 92 percent. Not only is the frame more durable, but it also increase towing capacity and improves handling. Engine and transmission mounts have been enlarged to reduce vibration, and hydraulic body mounts under the cab keep passengers comfortable.

Since these trucks were designed with towing in mind, special access holes were added to the rear frame to facilitate installation of fifth-wheel hitches. The frame-mounted rear hitch was also given an upgrade with a box-tube design now capable of towing 16,000 lbs.

The front suspension incorporates new upper and lower control arms and new torsion bars tailored to one of five different gross axle weight ratings. Upper control arms are constructed from forged steel that is both both stronger and lighter than the previous arms, while the new lower arms are cast iron to maximize load capacity. Using a unique torsion bar for each gross weight rating allows for better control over vehicle height, resulting in improved handling and better alignment for reduced tire wear. These improvements allow for up to a 6,000 pound front axle weight rating, allowing all 4wd trucks to accommodate a snow plow.

Additional front suspension enhancements come from new urethane bump stops, two per side. The upper shock mount has been changed from a single stem mount to a two-bolt design to eliminate the possibility of squeaks and thumps.

The rear suspension design uses asymmetrical leaf springs that are wider and capable of greater load handling. The design features 3- inch wide leafs, with front and rear spring sections of different lengths to reduce the twisting that can result in axle hob and loss of traction. The 2500HD use a two-stage design with a rating of 6,200 lbs, and 3500HD models have a three-stage design with 7,050 lb and 9,375 lb ratings on single and dual-wheel models respectively.

With these improvements, the Silverado 3500HD now boasts up to 20,000 towing capacity for fifth-wheel trailers, besting that of the 2010 Dodge Ram 23500 and the 2010 Ford F-350. Payload capacity at a maximum 6,335 lbs is also greater than that of current Ford and Dodge offerings.

Propelling the 2011 Silverado is a more powerful Duramax 6.6L turbo diesel engine. GM claims increases in both horsepower and torque compared with the previous model, while emissions are reduced by other 60 percent compared with the 2010 model. Various revisions help improve durability and assure a long engine life. These include Changing the main bearing profiles to increase oil film thickness, a new oil pump designed to increase pressure at low speeds, changing the oil circuit at the turbocharger to increase pressure and deliver oil faster. Modified connecting rod pin ends provide increased piston support, and new high-strength piston design forgoes bushings resulting in lower reciprocating weight. An bypass for the EGR cooler reduces soot deposits for high-mileage engines.

Brake life is enhanced with an exhaust brake system to assist in slowing the vehicle on downhill grades without using the brakes. When activated, the exhaust brake uses back pressure created by the turbocharger to slow the engine. The system is integrated with the cruise control system to provide seamless operation under varying load and grade conditions.

The industrial-strength Allison 1000 transmission has been improved for 2011 to handle the additional power of the engine and improve fuel economy. The transmission is more efficient, delivering more power of the axles than before to yield better fuel efficiency. The transmission has six speeds including two overdrive gears.

With the new engine and transmission, the truck is capable of sub 9 second 0-60 mph times, and can run the quarter mile in under 16 seconds.

The base engine and transmission has also been improved. The standard Vortec 6.0L gas V-8 engine receives a new camshaft for more low- end torque and better performance off the line and when towing. The Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed transmission has additional attachment points to the transfer case for strength and smoother performance. A stronger output shaft and new heat shield ensure long life and durability.

Brakes have been upgraded for 2011, with discs now measuring 14 inches in diameter in front and rear. The rotors are thicker to provide for increased load capacity, and the calipers have been stiffened. The hydroboost system is revised for easier pedal operation and more confident feel. Complementing the system are larger wheel bearing assemblies.

Wheelbases and track width have been increased from the previous model, for better handling and a more compliant ride. Handling the turns is also easier with a larger steering gear, higher pressure power steering pump, and upgraded linkages.

Fuel tanks now offer 36-gallon capacity on all models, and boost maximum range of 680 miles on a single tank when equipped with the Duramax 6.6L engine.

Extended cab trucks new feature rear access doors that open a full 170 degrees. Inside, the trucks feature a host of electronic wizardry, including mobile WiFi, USB connection, Bluetooth, OnStar, XM Radio and a navigation system with available real-time traffic updates.

The new 2011 Silverado Heavy Duty trucks will be available this summer.
