The original Left 4 Dead made surviving a zombie outbreak more fun anyone thought possible. The formula was dead simple -- four survivors against an unending horde of infected -- but the stellar map designs and perfectly balanced combat made for some genuinely tense moments. It quickly became an online staple and now, the sequel is here to offer up more opportunities to hunt down the infected horde. GamePro Score: 4.5

Compared to the butter smooth E3 demo for Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age looked like it would end up being the black sheep of the family. Well, shame on us for doubting the wizards at BioWare: they worked their magic and turned that early demo into another must-have masterpiece.
After playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 again, it's easy to see why there hasn't been a sequel for almost ten years -- it's almost impossible to improve upon perfection. This cult-hit title has an insane roster made up of characters from Capcom's stable -- Mega Man, Ryu, Jill Valentine -- as well as favorites from Marvel like Iron Man, Spider-Man and Wolverine. Add in the 3-on-3 team combat, a complex fighting system and hundreds of screen-filling ultra combo bonanzas, and it's obvious: this game makes almost any other fighter look boring and lifeless by comparison. Now, the game is coming to XBLA and PSN with one amazing addition: online multiplayer. GamePro Score: 4.5

I'll admit wholeheartedly that I was a bit doubtful when I was first handed Chinatown Wars. After playing through last year's spectacular, yet remarkably darker and grittier Grand Theft Auto IV, I didn't quite know what to expect from Rockstar Leeds' latest installation. While I'd greatly enjoyed the PSP's on-the-go GTA iterations in Liberty City and Vice City Stories, there was no denying that Rockstar's flagship series had found a safe niche as more so a solid third person shooter than the arcade-styled, tongue-in-cheek sandbox racers that had preceded it. GamePro Score: 5.0

Along with its three expansion packs, the first Dawn of War was a great RTS title that gave players the ability to play almost all of the major races in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. But the game has gotten a little stale, especially when compared to the developer's follow-up effort, Company of Heroes, a title that I reviewed a while back and absolutely loved. I wasn't sure if Relic could top the World War II themed classic but Dawn of War II manages the impossible: the continuation of the Space Marines' saga usurps Company of Heroes and claims the RTS throne. GamePro Score: 5.0

Prince of Persia - PS3

I was never a huge fan of the original Prince of Persia games, but when the series was reborn in 2003's The Sands of Time, I quickly became a fanboy. The ensuing trilogy on the PS2 and Xbox took the Prince's plaforming roots and turned them into full-scale displays of acrobatics and dazzling swordplay. But the Prince's ability to reverse time became the core of the three aforementioned games-and it's mysteriously absent in the franchise's debut on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
But it's not the end of the world because the new Prince of Persia represents a fresh start for the series. Not only is the time control mechanic gone but the visual style has been completely overhauled, placing the Prince in a colorful yet gritty cel-shaded world. Fans of the series will be relieved to hear, though, that stunning leaps and wall-runs still form the basis of the gameplay. There's also a new sword-based combat system and abundant environmental puzzles to solve. The new foundation proves to be a boon for the Prince because the old formula was starting to smell stale. In my opinion, the new storyline, visual update and improved gameplay mechanics are just what the doctor ordered-it culminates in a game that is much more fun than its close cousin, Assassin's Creed.

THE BOTTOM LINE: A much-needed and welcome reboot for the series, Prince of Persia integrates wonderfully fun acrobatics with often-tricky swordplay, presented in a beautiful new, cel-shaded art style; it's an excellent debut for the franchise on the PS3 and Xbox 360. GamePro Score: 5.0

An enormous fan of the past installments in the Persona franchise, I'll be the first to admit that I was a tad skeptical when I heard that Persona 4 was dropping as soon as the end of 2008. Wrapping up my fourth run-through of Persona 3: FES, I was starting to feel like there wasn't anything else the series could throw at me that I hadn't seen before - and certainly not in such a short time span With the announcement that P4 would also be releasing on the Playstation 2, I couldn't help but worry; would this just be Persona 3 with a fresh coat of paint and a new cast of cookie-cutter characters? I'm happy to report that while Persona 4 does hold quite a few similarities to its predecessor, it proves itself as a brand new experience from the ground up with unprecedented levels of innovation, character, and outright charisma. Persona 4 may very well prove to be the shot in the arm that the RPG genre is in such dire need of.

Call of Duty: World at War - PC

I'm a big CoD honk; I played the first two games religiously and every now and again, I'll reinstall one or the other and play through it from beginning to end. I didn't appreciate the third installment very much, mostly because they didn't bother releasing it on the PC (what were they thinking?) but the franchise redeemed itself with the sublime Modern Warfare. I loved that game-the single-player was awesome (AC130 missions FTW!), the modern setting was fantastic and holy crap was the multiplayer good! I was initially skeptical when World at War was announced-why go back to World War II when the modern setting hadn't yet been fully explored-but my doubts quickly disappeared when I finally got my hands on a copy.

THE BOTTOM LINE: To call it Call of Duty 4 with a World War II skin is insulting to Treyarch because World at War is so much more than that. It's a great follow up to Modern Warfare and proves that World War II is still a viscerally charged conflict to live through. The single-player campaign is a tad short and it isn't as polished as Modern Warfare's but the action is intense, there are plenty of thrills and the multiplayer looks like it will be just as awesome. I'm especially looking forward to the Nazi Zombies mode. GamePro Score: 4.5

Call of Duty: World at War - PS3

For all the talk about how first-person shooters have milked World War II dry, the conflict's sheer battlefield variety and tactical scope make it a natural home for the genre. World at War doesn't innovate with quite the ambitious vigor of Call of Duty 4, and it falters a little on the single-player front, but it's every bit as energizing where it matters most.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Developer Treyarch did a fantastic job of not reinventing the wheel with World at War. Rather, they took the best elements of Modern Warfare and expanded upon them. The end product is a thrilling experience that injects some of the visceral punch back into World War II. The single-player mode is short but sweet and it unlocks the awesome Nazi Zombies mode but the true strength of WaW is the compelling multiplayer, which should have you huddled in the virtual trenches for a long time to come. GamePro Score: 4.5

Tom Clancy's EndWar - PS3

EndWar is a strategic variant of multiplayer Call of Duty 4 or Counter-Strike. It's a game of constant give and take, action and reaction, and deliciously rewarding upgrades in between battles. Better still, the game's built-in voice recognition system takes it to a whole new level of gaming.

THE BOTTOM LINE: EndWar is tense, fast-paced and deeply complex while maintaining a very logical and simple set of rules throughout. It's hard to imagine anyone ever making a better strategy game for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Gears of War 2

As a devoted fan of the shooter genre, I really enjoyed the original Gears of War -- its in-the-trenches intensity was a shot of adrenaline for the entire action genre. Unfortunately, I was left somewhat disappointed by its too-short campaign and groan-worthy character dialogue, as well as its fickle online multiplayer. Despite my complaints, I knew that Gears of War was something special, with its ultra-violent presentation and intense cover-hopping action. Since its release, I've been proven right: literally dozens of other games have mimicked the style, if not the substance, of the original Gears of War.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The good news is that Gears of War 2 significantly improves upon the original game in every possible way, addressing several key shortcomings that kept its predecessor from being a bona-fide classic. Gears of War 2 is a terrific action game that deservedly resides in the upper echelon of console shooters, and is the best shooter to hit the Xbox 360 so far this year. Action gamers, you've found your next obsession. GamePro Score: 5.0

Dragon Ball: Origins

Ironically, Goku's adventures as a child show much more ingenuity and charm on the Nintendo DS than most rehashed DBZ games have in the last five years. There's no Super Saiyans, no exploding planets, and no mention of those infamous power levels -- just good, fun martial arts wackiness. With unabashed adult humor, engaging controls, and a funny, memorable story, Dragon Ball: Origins is the best Dragon Ball game I've seen in a long time.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Even if you've never heard of the series, Dragon Ball: Origins is a fantastic adventure that any DS owner should definitely play. GamePro Score: 4.5

Review: Fallout 3 (360)

There's no way around it: Fallout 3 has a lot to live up to. Many regard the first two games in the series as RPG classics. Those post-apocalyptic treasures shook off the tired constraints of swords-and-sorcery cliches to create free-roaming worlds of postmodern danger and moral consequences. Luckily for fans and newcomers alike, Fallout 3 isn't just a fitting tribute to that legacy, it's one of the most persistently absorbing role-playing worlds ever created.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The first two Fallout titles are classics in their own right but Fallout 3 might just be the best one yet. Heck, it might just be the best console RPG of all time. It's deep, complex and tremendously addictive. From the amazing character development system to the engaging and satisfying combat, Fallout 3 has everything you could want in an RPG experience. Play this game. Seriously. Do it. GamePro Score: 5.0

Guitar Hero: World Tour

Guitar Hero: World Tour is the landmark franchise's first foray into group-based band territory, offering up options to not only rock out on the titular guitar but also get your bass groove on, smash your way to stardom on drums, or wail glass-shattering vocals to an impressive selection of popular tunes. World Tour looks to set itself apart from a sea of similarly-minded games by infusing the tried and true band dynamic with the series' unique cartoonish charm, innovative new instrument models and an in-depth music creator which aims to allow users to record and share original tracks over the 'net.

THE BOTTOM LINE: While never quite proving itself as the penultimate virtual rock experience, Guitar Hero: World Tour is a blast in its own right that definitely deserves a look from both veterans of the series and newcomers alike. GamePro Score: 4.5

Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP)

Initially released in 1996 for the Super Famicon, the original Star Ocean was a groundbreaking debut for newly formed developer Tri-Ace. Both critics and fans praised the effort and it became evident that established role-playing franchises such as Final Fantasy and the Tales series suddenly had a new rival to compete with. Unfortunately, US gamers never got a chance to experience Star Ocean, a crime that's being rectified with the release of First Departure on the PSP. It's been twelve years but man was it worth the wait.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The original Star Ocean finally comes to US shores and gamers on this side of the world are in for a fantastic RPG experience. GamePro Score: 4.5

Review: Fable II (360)

The original Fable promised gamers the world but upon its release many players lamented the unexplained absence of many promised features. Even though it ultimately turned out to be an exceptionally enjoyable game, and acclaimed designer Peter Molyneux apologized to his fans, the whole affair left a bitter taste in many mouths.

It's now four years later and it seems as if everyone involved has learned their lesson. As a result, the superior sequel, Fable II, is landing on store shelves with far more realistic expectations. What's most surprising isn't that the game exceeds those tempered expectations in almost every way that matters, but how well the many disparate activities come together to create a beautifully coherent whole.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Lots of games claim you can go anywhere and do anything inside their worlds. The trouble is, once you've eluded the cops for the umpteenth time, the whole exercise starts to feel hollow when your actions leave no lasting impact. What makes Fable II so thoroughly absorbing, despite a few notable shortcomings, is the heady illusion that every choice you make sends ripples through the world, its people, and your own simulated heart.

Yes, you've been burned before when you bought into the fantastical promises that Peter Molyneux made but he's learned his lesson and so have you: the hype has been kept to a minimum and our expectations have been kept in check, which is a good thing for everyone involved. The developers can release a game to realistic expectations and gamers aren't left disappointed because they didn't get 'teh best game evar!!!!1111!!1!' But guess what: Fable II is pretty damn good, so you can safely let your expectations climb high, because chances are this full featured and wonderfully complex game will meet them. GamePro Score: 4.5
