After a weather cancellation earlier in the year we finally made it back to run the tournament. At our Ohio tournament we fished a new location for the third consecutive year and had great participation at Mosquito Lake.

Mosquito Lake

The team of Tim Shmigal and TJ Shmigal wrapped a first place check with 14.36. Chris and Wayne Clemence fell just short with 14.16, good enough for 2nd place. Mark Milano and Todd Tuax, winners of the 1st Ohio Tournament we ran showed up strong with a third place weight of 13.26. Rounding out 4th and 5th were Dan Blackert with 13.23 and Mike and Dave Tharp with 13.14. Top producing baits were Cane Toads, 7" Green Pumpkin Ribbon Tails, and Ugly Otters. A few teams had some discontinued Ninja Spins in their boxes and did well on those as well.

Kentucky Lake Results

Kasey Alexander and Chuck Sylvestri took home the first place check on Kentucky Lake with a 14.8. Curtis Persinger and Michael were a close second with 14.7. Right on their heals were the team of Robert Siress and Kerry Spurgeon with 14.5. With the help of a 5.11 tournament big fish Tren Wilson and Shaun Arrant came in 4th with a total weight of 13.15. Kevin Hunt and Ross Bryan were right behind them in 5th with 13.14 and a big fish of 5.7. Top baits at Kentucky Lake were Gambler's big worms 13" and 10" Ribbon Tails. Maybe next year we will see some big weights on the new ER16 Worm. Gambler Football Jigs tipped with Twin Tail Craw Grubs and Flappy Daddy's produced some cash winning fish as well. Special thanks to the FLW team support with the weigh in trailer.

With record turnouts at both venues you had to be on top of your game to take home the prize money.

With 213 boat registered and just over 190 fishing on Lake Guntersville we knew there would be plenty of big fish being weighed in and the anglers did not disapoint. With a three fish limit, Charles Wilbanks and Caston Roberts weighed 18.29 lbs to claim the top spot. Their bag was anchored by a 9.04 big fish that also to the big fish top prize. After that Michael Keener, Jr and Sr came in with three solid fish and a weight of 14.91 for second prize. Kevin Gentile and Ted MClellan wrapped up third with 14.74. Rounding out the top 5 were Brennon Binkley and John Wilerson with 14.2 and Mike Surman and Richard Baker with 13.58.

The winning weight was caught on the Ninja Jig and Flappy Daddy Trailer. Overall the top weights were dominated by Ninja Jigs and big worms. 13" Ribbon Tails and 10" Ribbon Tails.

Old Hickory was next up on the schedule. And another record turnout as we topped just over 100 boats. Again we were treated to another strong weigh in. Darden Nelms and Tricia Nelms topped the field with 16.3 lbs of fish. John Hopkins and Mickey Beck were right behind with 15.8. Stacy Newman's and Scotty Webster's 15.55 was good enough for 3rd place overall. 4th place with 15lbs when to Andy Roberts and Corey Dill. Jesse Rigsby and Dave Rigsby finished out the top 5 with 12.95. Big Fish weighed 6.25 and the honors went to Troy Driver and Steve Belton.

Once again Ninja Jigs and Flappy Daddies were high on the list of the top finishers.

At all three stops the colder weather had pushed the fish back slightly and seemed at all locations the same baits consistently produced quality fish. Giggy Heads, Sweebos, and Aces were the top baits mentioned at each stop.

We opened the season up on Wheeler on a windy day with over 60 boats participating. The team of Nathan Hillis and Tim Barnett caught 12.35 to take home the first place check of $1000.00. They were followed up by Heath Craig and Arch Cornett with 12.18 and Bryon Luman and Mike Edwards took home third place with 10.36.

The second stop one week later was on Martin Lake. With a field of over 70 boats Josh Williams and Steve Baker won the $1000.00 first prize with 17.54. Tullis Lanier and David Barret where right behind them with 16.06, and Chris Miller and Elijah Miller caught 15.42 to wrap up third place.

Our last stop was on Lake Lanier with 130 boats looking to take adavantage of the No Entry Fee Tournament. Nick Jenkins and Puncy Lingerfelt's 15.5 was enough for a $1000.00. They were followed up by Jamie Stuart and Scott Warley at 15.34. Chad Woodall and Dusty Woodall brought in 14.5 for third.

Don DeMott of Boca Raton, Florida braved the elements while trusting in a variety of Gambler Lures to produce in difficult circumstances to earn a 3rd Place finish in the 2010 Southeastern FLW American Fishing Series. photo FLW Outdoors/Gary Mortenson

With the exception of an impending cold front, conditions were ideal for fishing on Okeechobee. The bass were in various stages of the spawn, biting aggressively, and water levels were such that anglers could fish virtually anywhere on the lake. There was adequate depth for flipping grass mats and casting open pockets all around the lake. Don prepared for the frontal conditions by focusing on two large grass beds. Within those areas, he identified specific mats of vegetation that bass could migrate to when temperatures dipped. Additionally, he turned to his confidence lures, the Gambler Flappy Daddy, BB Cricket, and Ribbon Tail Worm, when the bite deteriorated.

Overnight, just prior to the first day of the tournament, water temperatures fell five degrees and the wind kicked up to a blustery 25 miles per hour. Although Don was prepared to flip if the bite entirely shut down, he did not have to. He cast a Gambler Flappin’ Shad and 7-inch Ribbon Tail worm to claim the top spot on the leader board with a 24-pound limit when other competitors scrambled to catch mere numbers of fish.

Don believes Gambler’s unique worm design provided a distinct advantage in the conditions he encountered on Day One. “I especially like Gambler’s 7-inch Ribbon Tail Worm because of the body. It holds a screw-in weight real well. The tail is a little thicker, too, which helps to move more water. I caught nearly all of my big fish on that June Bug colored worm.”

The beefy tail combined with the ability to hold a heavy screw-in weight allowed Don to cast with pinpoint accuracy despite the windy conditions. In the event the tail wrapped around a clump of Kissimmee grass, he was able to drag the worm into the water without exhausting valuable time replacing a torn lure.

Don rigged the Ribbon Tail Worm on a 3/0 Gambler KO hook and 25-pound monofilament line. A ½-ounce Gambler Tungsten Florida Rig Weight topped his big-bass-enticing assembly.

Conditions further worsened on Day Two. Temperatures continued to fall and the steady wind dirtied water in many of his previously productive areas. Bites in the morning were scarce, so Don adjusted by spending the majority of his tournament day flipping dense mats of vegetation that helped filter the turbid water. He turned to a Shadow Blue Flappy Daddy and BB Cricket to trigger fish into biting.

“Some of the stuff I was fishing looked like your front yard and other areas looked like the top of a picnic table. Where it was light enough to flip with, I used the Flappy Daddy. I really believe that the bigger the bait, the better off you will be when flipping. Bigger baits move more water and larger fish usually respond well to that. The Flappy Daddy’s claws move a lot of water. Where the cover was like the top of a picnic table, I went with a BB Cricket and 1-1/2 ounce weight. I was really aiming to just pierce the cover and get a reaction bite. The BB Cricket is a ‘high-horsepower’ plastic crawdad that way – you can flip it through the thickest cover.”

He screwed on a 1-ounce Tungsten Florida Rig Weight with the Flappy Daddy, and pegged a 1-1/2 ounce tungsten weight on the smaller-sized Cricket. Both baits utilized a 3/0 KO hook. Don’s 16-pound, 12-ounce limit positioned him within 7 ounces of the lead heading into the final day.

By the dawn of Day 3, the water temperature had fallen 15 degrees from the start of the tournament. Don continued flipping the BB Cricket and the Flappy Daddy in the cooling water. His efforts yielded a third consecutive limit, good enough for 3rd Place in the tournament – not too bad for fishing front yards and picnic tables!

Jim gives us a recap on his 8th place FLW Series showing.

Gambler’s Paddle Tail Worm and Flappin’ Shad factor big in finish

Although Jim Folks of Melborne, Florida is a regular boater in Bass Fishing League competition, he entered the FLW Eastern Series as a co-angler on a whim. His past experience of learning bass behavior on Lake Okeechobee combined with three favorite Gambler Lures helped transform his impulse entry into an investment.

If one phrase could describe Jim’s back boat approach, it would be to “keep it simple.” He used the Gambler Ace, Flappin’ Shad, and Paddle Tail worm to improve his catch throughout the three day tournament en route to an 8th Place finish.

Jim’s Day 1 partner, FLW Pro Dwayne Horton, targeted spawning fish in the southern end of the lake with various topwater lures. After fishing for a few hours and missing some quality bites, it became clear that the fish would not respond to their topwater offerings. It was so challenging in fact, that by 11 o’clock, Jim failed to place a keeper in the boat. He made a key adjustment that afternoon, however, in changing to a Red Bug-colored Gambler Ace. The change allowed him to squeak out a four fish catch and stay in contention with a 58th place standing.

The second day of competition would not unfold as a slug-fest, either. With his boater targeting pressured spawners, Jim knew that he had to capitalize on the less-stressed, cruising fish with a Gambler Paddle Tail worm to improve his rank.

He explains, “I call it a fish finder rig. During the spawn, I’ll take the Paddle Tail and cut a notch in it like a Flappin Shad, working it across the bottom and around isolated cover. I catch a lot of fish swimming it also, covering water like a spinnerbait. It is a great bait during the spawn to catch a limit. Throughout the tournament, that was really what I wanted to do – to catch my five.”

Specifically, Jim worked the Paddle Tail across shallow grass pockets. Just before moving to the north end of the lake at noon, he managed to box two fish at 2-1/2 pounds a piece. Once they arrived near the boat launch, Jim and his partner focused on fish meandering through shallow hydrilla clumps. Just before returning to check-in, he managed to round out a limit for 8-1/2 pounds and moved up another 20 places in the standings.

Jim’s “fish finder rig” consisted of a 5-inch Gambler Paddle Tail worm in Watermelon color, affixed to a 1/8-ounce Gambler Screw-In Weight and 5/0 hook. He rigged the Paddle Tail, cut down in relation to the hook, and cast the assembly on 15-pound test monofilament line.

When Jim heard that his Day 3 partner was targeting a good number of spawning bass a short distance from the launch, he knew immediately what he wanted to do: cover as much water as possible. The morning started slow, but after switching to a Gambler Flappin’ Shad, caught a chunky 2-1/2 pounder. Shortly thereafter, Jim changed back to a Paddle Tail worm when his partner maneuvered the boat into a section of open water. There, he caught three more quick fish and eventually managed to finish his limit. With over half the day still remaining, he once again changed tactics to improve his overall weight.

Jim clarifies, “After I had my limit, I picked up a Gambler Flappin’ Shad and threw it the rest of the day. I wanted to catch a decent-sized fish, and I was confident that I could catch one on it. I threw it, threw it, and threw it even more. I had some good blow-ups, and ended up catching one towards the end of the day that was close to 5-pounds.”

The last cull of the day added nearly 4 pounds to Jim’s limit and vaulted him into the Top-10.

Jim rigged the Gambler Flappin’ Shad on 50-pound braided line, a heavy-wire 5/0 wide-gap hook, and a 1/32-ounce Gambler Screw-In Weight. Jim relied on Gambler’s Green Pumpkin Watermelon Candy color.

“Those two baits are exceptional lures for covering water, especially for co-anglers down here. In Florida, you are generally surrounded by fish. If you pull into an area that has grass all around the boat, even if the guy in the front focuses on a big bedding fish, there are so many fish that you can cast to. And, the Gambler Flappin’ Shad and Paddle Tail worm are perfect baits for casting long distances and covering lots of water.”

Hopefully, Jim did not get too winded for winding those baits for three days straight… Congratulations, Jim, on your Top-10 finish!

Receive 15% off these products until February 17, 2010. The event was a kickoff to the 2010 Southern Open tour. With the Big-O stuck in a bass-bite-debilitating cold front to start the tournament, anglers found themselves scrambling for even keeper-sized fish.

Kenny’s KO Pattern
Despite the difficult conditions, JT Kenney jumped out to a Day 1 lead by punching a Gambler Little Otter in June Bug color through shallow, matted vegetation in the southern end of the lake. To make his flipping presentation standout, Kenney added the new Gambler KO hangover skirt, 3/0 KO hook, and 1-1/2 ounce tungsten weight. To assure an adequate hookset and so as to prevent fish from coming loose, he flipped the Little Otter on 65-pound braid with an 8-foot heavy action rod.

The reason that Kenney selected the Little Otter was two-fold. The compact size of the Little Otter provided improved numbers of bites in the cold front conditions, and its unique features created reaction bites where other baits would not.

Kenney explains, “The thing I really like about the Little Otter is the paddletail appendages. It creates a lot of action. When you are flipping those mats in one spot, lifting it up and dropping it back down, lifting it up and dropping it back down, those two little appendages give it a good swimming action.”

To further improve the Otter’s penetrating characteristics, Kenney incorporated a KO hangover skirt.

“Honestly, the KO hangover skirt just gives the bait a cool look. The bass down here have seen so many baits, so it is important to give them a different look. It’s bulkier, yet it helps the bait slide through vegetation easier.”

To further customize the appearance, he trimmed the KO hangover skirt to half of the pre-packaged length. The Little Otter – hangover combo helped Kenney post his first Top-10 finish of 2010.

Chris’ Cane Toad
Not to be outdone by his Gambler teammate, Chris Lane also employed a small-lure flipping presentation early in the event. He used a Bowen’s Silver Shadow BB Cricket with a 1-1/2 ounce Gambler tungsten screw-in weight and KO hook.

Chris testifies, “I just have a ton of confidence in that rig. I love the new tungsten screw-in weight. And now Gambler has the KO hook that makes the entire rig the perfect setup.”

The BB Cricket put Chris in position to win going into the afternoon of Day 3. With just two hours left to go in the tournament, Chris decided to abandon his flipping pattern and pick up a Gambler Cane Toad in an effort to pursue heavier largemouth that he theorized had moved shallower with the high sun and warming water.

“I knew the fish wanted to go shallow; I just didn’t know when it would be. I didn’t think that it would happen during the tournament, but when I saw that the water temperature finally reached 60 degrees, I said, ‘It’s time to go!’ At that point I had somewhere around 10 pounds in the well – an average limit. So, I pulled out my Gambler Cane Toad and went to work. Sure enough, on my first cast, I got a 4-pounder. Then, a little while later, I caught two more chunks. And, the rest is history.”

Chris relied on his namesake “Lane Toad” color pattern, specifically designed to mimic the Florida Shiner, screwed onto a Double Trouble toad hook. He used 50-pound test braided line and a 7-foot, 2-inch heavy action rod to assemble the heaviest limit weighed by any competitor on Day 3. And he did so just in the nick of time.

Receive 15% off these lures at www.gambler-lures.com. One thing we have noticed when fishing swim jigs is they just don't hold up to what fish can dish out or to the conditions of heavy grass or timber. The swim jig technique originated up north in open water around docks and areas without an abundance of heavy cover. When catching big southern bass in heavy cover the original swim jigs needed some improvement. Gambler Lures designed the ultimate heavy cover big fish swim jig. A 6/0 heavy wire hook is the basis of our design. This hook holds up to braid, big fish, and lots of cover. The head design keeps the jig running true and coming through grass without hanging up. The weedguard is the perfect thickness to deflect cover but still allow excellent hook penetration. Couple it with the Flappy Daddy, Twin Tail Craw Grub, or MegaDaddy and start swimming a jig to see what you have been missing.
