Opening Night

The gallery kicked off the month of May with an exhibition of recent work by Bob Booth and John Gibson. Opening at 6:00pm on Friday night the gallery has separated the exhibition with John in the front and Bob in the back gallery. This was an obvious decision by the gallery to exhibit Bob’s paintings on the higher walls of the back gallery.

As you enter the gallery you are immediately faced with the work of John Gibson. In his first major exhibition, John’s work is truly something different. You get the feeling that there is so much more to John’s paintings than the fantastic use of colour. Noticing the  long road and little house in most of the paintings that seem to entice the onlooker  to peer deeper into the paint. But what I enjoyed the most was the small format paintings often painted in pairs or triptychs. John has shown us he is very comfortable painting in a small or large format with his very unique style. John also has a love of dogs and is portrayed in his painting ‘Dreamtime Landscape with Jessie James’. The proceeds from the sale will be donated to Dr Robert Messeguer from the Fremantle Veterinarian Hospital. Dr Messeguer helped John with his beloved companion during her illness and passing. If you look closely at this painting, you can see the silhouette of Jessie James on the landscape.

Having gone to a lot of Bob’s exhibitions in the past, there was a noticeable difference in Bob’s large oil paintings. Not being able to put my finger on it, Bob explained that he is working more from memory with his recent work. Though the locations look like places in the North West, they are actually memories of these familiar locations that Bob has painted in the past. I was most intrigued by the new bird series of Dry Point Etchings. The familiar iconic figures in the trees were very affectionately drawn and show the wonderful partnership these animals share. These works proved an instant favourite with most selling on the opening night.

Mark Pellen, a close friend of John’s, was kind enough to speak about John’s love of painting and his success in his life before he painted full time. I had the job of talking on behalf of the gallery, and after my usual stumbling attempt at public speaking I introduced Bob to say a few words about his part of the exhibition. Bob is an exceptional public speaker and made light of one of his more comical titles (KWFM – Killer Wombats from Mars 1, 2 and 3) These are a series of three glass studies and have little to do with Killer Wombats. ‘My hope is that the work will make some genuine contribution irrespective of the silly title’.

The Wine Store were more than happy to come on board to support the event and supply the wine for the night. Cale Maxwell from The Wine Store served up the delicious Espalier Chardonnay and the 2005 Espalier Cabernet Shiraz. These are both South Australian wines and are available from The Wine Store in East Fremantle.

A most genuine and modest man who claims not to seek wealth or fame to be happy, John Gibson is somehow driven to follow a personal quest – to link inextricably the past and present with the unknown future, seeing the three experiences as the continuum of life.

The exhibition will open on Friday 8th May 2009 at 6:00pm. The exhibition closes on the 21st May.

With a new logo and new approach to running the gallery, we have decided to make regular posts on our one and only blog. Myself (Greg) and Emily from the gallery will be publishing regular posts on this blog to try and communicate more with our followers and customers. You will notice at the end of the blog it will list who the publisher is. We now have a direct link to this blog from our website, so if you are a regular visitor to the site then you will only be a click away from reading our latest posts. When one of us is writing a blog post, the other will be working hard on a press release for the latest event at the gallery. We are also working hard on putting on painting workshops with Bob Booth. After the first workshop filled up in two days we are working on another date possibly in may. we had no idea that it would fill up so fast and be so popular, but I guess the artist has allot of fans! Bob is also painting for an exhibition in May, so it is a very busy time for him in the studio.

Gallery Nine by Five is now offering a still-life painting workshop with artist Bob Booth. The day will include short demonstrations from Bob with participants also producing their own piece of work. Participants will be required to bring their own equipment including; oil or acrylic paints, a canvas, brushes, an easel if you have one and a piece of your recent work.

Requirements: Bring the materials which you would normally use.

Outsider View presents new paintings by Anne Marie McCaughey, an established Irish artist, who has been exhibiting since graduating from art college in England in the mid-eighties.

The exhibition consists of two distinct series of works, small oils in which she investigates the nature of the mining machinery machine as a valuable cultural artifact, and a number of paintings of Fremantle and its surrounds.

Thanks to all who attended Savchenko’s Works on Paper exhibition last night and a special thanks to those who purchased some of his beautiful works. Opened by Bob Booth, the exhibition was Savchenko’s second exhibition at Gallery Nine by Five and this show did not disappoint. Bob talked about the human element in Savchenko’s work and the presence of the artist in all of the works. With none of the work priced over 1800, this is a great opportunity to purchase some great work from a renowned artist without spending a small fortune.

As usual the wine provided by Watershed went down a treat and the chilled Rose made the warm evening quite bearable.

Serhiy Savchenko

The coming exhibition of Savchenko’s works on paper, again justifies this artist’s considerable reputation in Europe and America. Gallery Nine By Five has great pleasure in showing this unquestionably magnificent collection which must be seen by any serious collector, or lover of fine significant art.

Savchenko’s figurative work is often charming, but never superficial, and there is a quality of naivety here which has been developed with sophistication and maturity.

It is hard to find anyone quite like Savchenko. The energy and exhilaration which characterises his paintings, at first seems to echo Willem de Kooning, but there is also a distinctive iconic potency in his work which points beyond the image. Even if this artist does not interpret his work in any religious terms, it is hard to escape the feeling that, at least in his portraits, there is something of George Roualt ‘s earnest simplicity behind them.

This show of works on paper includes a collection of ‘drypoints’ . Artists like Savchenko thrive on the untameable character of this medium, and each of the works shown, are lyrical and profound, without the slightest hint of affectation. The paintings exhibited have that ‘throw-away’ ease, which those familiar with his work have come to love and respect.

The Exhibition will open at 7:00pm on the 23rd January 2008.

Gallery Nine by Five celebrates the opening of ‘New Art, New Group, New Show’ A mixed exhibition of work from the gallery’s newest members as part of a new project that will see the gallery move away from commission based sales and put the power back into the artists’ hands. The artists that will be participating in this show also support the gallery, paying a fee to exhibit. And when you purchase a painting from one of the artists, they will receive 100% of the sale.

The gallery is attracting rapidly increasing interest amongst collectors, and first-time buyers because of the high standard of its artists and presentation, and this show will be no exception. The artists ranging from established to emerging and new artists on the exhibition scene will all have their own solo shows throughout the year as part of the service offered by the gallery. The gallery will also be putting on a number of mixed themed exhibitions during the year not to be missed.

The gallery is located on 6 Elder Place, Fremantle opposite the Fremantle Train Station, next door to L2 Eat Café.

Thanks to all those who braved the weather, and attended the first annual 9 by 5 Exhibition. The opening night was a great success with a fantastic turn out and great food and wine that was proved by empty plates and glasses.

Tempted by the quality of the work and surly the price, there were many sales on the night and a few more on the weekend that followed. With 3 weeks left of the exhibition we believe that they will all be gone soon. This is great for the gallery and for the artists that participated.

Popular on the night were Mark Rhodes simple and accessible works on board. With a low price these works were bound to find new homes very soon, and since the night they have all sold. Also popular was Jacinda Bayne with her collection of oils on board. These landscapes with vibrant colour were an absolute hit with all 4 selling on the night. With a vast range of styles this exhibition was nothing like the original, but there was something for everyone to enjoy, a style for all tastes and with Cossack award winners on the wall, the artwork came with great credentials.

Opened with a very warm speech by Jim Cathcart, Director of the Fremantle Arts Centre, he summarised the thoughts of most of Fremantle’s residents and business owners, that there is a very strong community in Freo especially within the arts, and one that the gallery hopes will only get stronger.
